Optimizing Seat Belt and Airbag Designs for Rear Seat Occupant Protection in Frontal Crashes

Recent field data have shown that the occupant protection in vehicle rear seats failed to keep pace with advances in the front seats likely due to the lack of advanced safety technologies. The objective of this study was to optimize advanced restraint systems for protecting rear seat occupants with a range of body sizes under different frontal crash pulses. Three series of sled tests (baseline tests, advanced restraint trial tests, and final tests), MADYMO model validations against a subset of the sled tests, and design optimizations using the validated models were conducted to investigate rear seat occupant protection with 4 Anthropomorphic Test Devices (ATDs) and 2 crash pulses.

Vehicle Chassis, Body, and Seat Belt Buckle Acceleration Responses in the Vehicle Crash Environment

For over 30 years, field research and laboratory testing has consistently demonstrated that proper utilization of a seat belt dramatically reduces the risk of occupant death or serious injury in motor vehicle crashes. The injury prevention benefits of seat belts require that they remain fastened during collisions. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and SAE Recommended Practices set forth seat belt requirements to ensure proper buckle performance in accident conditions. Numerous analytical and laboratory studies have investigated buckle inertial release properties. Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that current buckle designs have inertial release thresholds well above those believed to occur in real-world crashes. Nevertheless, inertial release theories persist. Various conceptual amplification theories, coupled with high magnitude accelerations measured on vehicle frame components are used as support for these release theories.

Treasuri2/FE: A Tool for the FE Simulation of Sound Package Parts Fully Integrated in Nastran

Porous materials are extensively used in the construction of automotive sound package parts, due to their intrinsic capability of dissipating energy through different mechanisms. The issue related to the optimization of sound package parts (in terms of weight, cost, performances) has led to the need of models suitable for the analysis of porous materials' dynamical behavior and for this, along the years, several analytical and numerical models were proposed, all based on the system of equations initially developed by Biot. In particular, since about 10 years, FE implementations of Biot's system of equations have been available in commercial software programs but their application to sound package parts has been limited to a few isolated cases. This is due, partially at least, to the difficulty of smoothly integrating this type of analyses into the virtual NVH vehicle development.

Biomechanical Evaluation of Headwear System Prototypes using Digital Human Modeling

Digital human modeling allows for the evaluation of equipment designs before physically building and testing prototypes. This paper presents an example of how digital human modeling was used to perform biomechanical studies on four new designs for future infantry headwear systems. Range of Motion (ROM) and cervical spine forces and moments were compared using static and dynamic simulations in a virtual environment. Results confirmed that headwear system prototypes with optimal overall mass and Centre of Mass (CM) location, as determined by previous human subject trials, exerted the least amount of biomechanical loading. Facial protection was favorable when considering forces and moments in the cervical spine, however when considering ROM, the rigid prototype mandible guards used in this evaluation are not recommended. The shape of a more accommodating mandible guard was developed, and the option to remove facial protection for some tasks was recommended.

Dynamic Analysis of Car Ingress/Egress Movement: an Experimental Protocol and Preliminary Results

This paper focuses on full body dynamical analysis of car ingress/egress motion. It aims at proposing an experimental protocol adapted for analysing joint loads using inverse dynamics. Two preliminary studies were first performed in order to 1/ define the main driver/car interactions so as to allow measuring the contact forces at all possible contact zones and 2/ identify the design parameters that mainly influence the discomfort. In order to verify the feasibility of the protocol, a laboratory study was carried out, during which two subjects tested two car configurations. The experimental equipment was composed of a variable car mock-up, an optoelectronic motion tracking system, two 6D-force plates installed on the ground next to the doorframe and on the car floor, a 6D-Force sensor between the steering wheel and the steering column, and two pressure maps on the seat. Motions were reconstructed from measured surface markers trajectories using inverse kinematics.

International Space Station United States Operational Segment Crew Quarters On-orbit vs. Design Performance Comparison

The International Space Station (ISS) United States Operational Segment (USOS) received the first two permanent ISS Crew Quarters (CQ) on Utility Logistics Flight Two (ULF2) in November 2008. As many as four CQs can be installed in the Node 2 element to increase the ISS crew member size to six. The CQs provide crew members with private space that has enhanced acoustic noise mitigation, integrated radiation-reduction material, communication equipment, redundant electrical systems, and redundant caution and warning systems. The rack-sized CQ system has multiple crew member restraints, adjustable lighting, controllable ventilation, and interfaces that allow each crew member to personalize his or her CQ workspace. The deployment and initial operational checkout during integration of the ISS CQ to Node 2 is described in this paper.

Genesis of the Third-Body at the Pad-Disc Interface: Case Study Of Sintered Metal Matrix Composite Lining Material

During braking, third-body flows and layers govern friction mechanisms, which are fully responsible of the friction coefficient and wear. In the context of development of brake friction pairs, the involved tribological circuit has to be well understood and mastered. This paper concerns a sintered metal matrix composite used for TGV very high speed train. A series of low-energy stop brakings allows a detailed study of the third-body formation at the pad-disc contact. The pin surface is observed after each test. The evolution of the rubbing-area expansion all along the series is explained, and the friction behaviour, typical of the studied friction material, is related to the formation of a well-established third body at the pad-disc interface.

Improved Accuracy of Unguided Articulated Robots

The effectiveness of serial link articulated robots in aerospace drilling and fastening is largely limited by positional accuracy. Unguided production robotic systems are practically limited to +/-0.5mm, whereas the majority of aerospace applications call for tolerances in the +/-0.25mm range. The precision with which holes are placed on an aircraft structure is affected by two main criteria; the volumetric accuracy of the positioner, and how the system is affected when an external load is applied. Production use and testing of off-the-shelf robots has highlighted the major contributor to reduced stiffness and accuracy as being error ahead of the joint position feedback such as backlash and belt stretch. These factors affect the omni-directional repeatability, thus limiting accuracy, and also contribute to deflection of the tool point when process forces are applied.

Compact Fixturing Based on Magneto-rheological Fluids for Aeronautic Stringers Milling

The paper explains the compact fixturing based on magneto-rheological (MR) fluids that have been designed and validated for aeronautic stringers milling. The MR fluid based tooling developed is flexible and reconfigurable as it can be adapted to different profile's lengths and sections and it is able to fix compliant workpieces without reference faces as the MR fluid adapts to the outer shape of each profile. The MR fluid based tooling is suitable to hold non-magnetic materials such as aluminum and also materials that do not admit high clamping forces, such as titanium, because they will appear as deformation after machining due to the memory effect of titanium. The MR fluid based tooling has been tested in a machine environment under real machining conditions and promising results have been obtained.

Technology Breakthrough Achieves Objectives for SAE Preload Targets in Heavy Duty Wheel Ends

Patents granted recently to Mr. Rode have changed the industry capability to adjust and verify wheel-end bearings on trucks. Until now it was believed1 that there was nothing available to confirm or verify the most desirable settings of preload on these bearings. The new, breakthrough invention is a tool and spindle-locking nut that permit quick and accurate wheel bearing adjustment by utilizing direct reading force measurement. Bearings can be set to either SAE recommended preloads or specific endplay settings. The author has been working on bearing adjustment methods for industrial applications for over forty years, and considers these inventions to be his most important breakthrough for solving this elusive bearing adjustment problem. Consistent wheel bearing preload adjustment was not possible before, even though it was widely known to achieve the best wheel performance as noted in SAE specification J2535 and re-affirmed in 2006 by the SAE Truck and Bus Wheel Subcommittee.

Inferential Sensing Techniques to Enable Condition Based Maintenance

Inferential sensing, as it relates to the equipment operator, can be viewed as human intuition [1]. The person operating the equipment can sense there is something wrong while their intuition tells them when and what needs troubleshooting and repair. Attempts have been made to implement this human intuition model to monitor a vehicle operation and detect abnormalities. In many approaches traditional sensors are added to the vehicle which increases cost, complexity, and another failure point. After years of developments and techniques, there are few highly reliable on-board systems that can duplicate the human intuition model since the specific failure cannot be directly measured but must be inferred from a variety of symptoms. This paper describes an engineering approach using Physics of Failure (PoF) for specific subsystems, developing the applicable fatigue models, and then collecting, monitoring, and manipulating the real-time on-vehicle data to complement the “operator intuition”.

Verification and Validation According to IEC 61508: A Workflow to Facilitate the Development of High-Integrity Applications

Model-Based Design with production code generation has been extensively utilized throughout the automotive software engineering community because of its ability to address complexity, productivity, and quality challenges. With new applications such as lane departure warning or electromechanical steering, engineers have begun to consider Model-Based Design to develop embedded software for applications that need to comply with safety standards such as IEC 61508. For in-vehicle applications, IEC 61508 is often considered state-of-the-art or generally accepted rules of technology (GART) for development of high-integrity software [6, 11]. In order to demonstrate standards compliance, the objectives and recommendations outlined in IEC 61508-3 [8] must be mapped onto processes and tools for Model-Based Design. This paper discusses a verification and validation workflow for developing in-vehicle software components which need to comply with IEC 61508-3 using Model-Based Design.

Tool Wear Compensation

This paper describes the principles of a new method to compensate for tool wear when drilling in complex materials such as Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics (CFRP), Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics / Titanium (CFRP/Ti) and Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics / Alloy (CFRP/AI) stacks. A reliable and repeatable hole quality is essential, especially in automatic drilling applications with robots or gantries. The method combines the unique feature to dynamically adjust the drilling diameter in very small steps in an Orbital drilling End-effector and a new type of software algorithm to predict and compensate for the tool wear in different materials. With this method a large number of holes can be drilled without changing the cutting tool, and a Cpk value of more than 2,5 can be achieved.

Protection of the C-17 Airplane during Semi Prepared Runway Operations

The C-17 airplane operates in some of the most challenging environments in the world including semi prepared runway operations (SPRO). Typical semi-prepared runways are composed of a compacted soil aggregate of sand, silt, gravel, and rocks. When the airplane lands or takes off from a semi-prepared runway, debris, including sand, gravel, rocks and, mud is kicked up from the nose landing gear (NLG) and the main landing gear (MLG) tires. As the airplane accelerates to takeoff or decelerates from landing touchdown, this airborne debris impacts the underbelly and any component mounted on the underbelly. The result is the erosion of the protective surface coating and damage to systems that protrude below the fuselage into the debris path. The financial burden caused by SPRO damage is significant due to maintenance costs, spares costs and Non-Mission Capable (NMC) time.

Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation of Collaborative Air Traffic Flow Management using Brahms

The air traffic demand on the US national airspace frequently exceeds its available capacity. In current operations, the Air Traffic Service Provider designs and implements air traffic management initiatives with minimal interaction with the airlines. NASA and its partners have developed a new collaborative air traffic flow management concept of operations that involves the users of the airspace to a greater degree. In this paper, we describe an agent-based simulation of the new concept of operations and our planned experimentation to determine if the new concept of operations will lead to better utilization of the national airspace.

Sustainable Manufacturing Analysis using an Activity Based Object Oriented Method

This article begins by describing the need for a new method and tool for performing a sustainability assessment for manufacturing processes and systems. A brief literature survey is done to highlight the major existing methods and tools, their function, and their shortcomings. The article goes on to describe the general approach of the method before describing a computer aided tool that has been developed to implement the method. The article concludes with a walk through of a generic use case that describes where such a method would be useful and how such a tool would be implemented.

Improving the Supply Chain by Sharing Intelligent Technical Data Packages

For many suppliers in the aerospace value chain, business commences when the customer shares the Technical Data Package (TDP) that defines the detailed requirements for a specific part. To convert the customer TDP into the necessary internal documentation, suppliers must expend large amounts of effort. This generally involves passing along copies of the TDP to each functional discipline, which not only results in redundant and laborious work, but it introduces technical risk. There are now software tools available that enable an intelligent TDP that provides more value than just sharing a 3D CAD model. These tools electronically organize and integrate all elements of the TDP independent of the PLM software in use. The application of the intelligent TDP has enabled a 30% reduction in supply chain inefficiencies.

Architecture Driven Development for Cyber Physical Systems

Cyber-physical systems consisting of networks of interacting systems are often developed by distributed teams in a production environment. Processes, tools and work products supporting development of cyber-physical systems are continuously evolving through the different design phases. A growing trend to manage the development process has been the use of model-based development approaches. However, these approaches primarily use behavioral models to represent complex systems, rendering them inadequate to address collaborative and non-functional program requirements. This paper discusses an architecture-driven process that can address the challenges posed during the development of cyber-physical systems. Two key enabling technologies – the SAE AADL (Architecture Analysis and Design Language) and the IME (Integrated Modeling Environment) are leveraged in this process.

Proposed Standards and Tools for Risk Analysis and Allocation of Robotic Systems to Enhance Crew Safety during Planetary Surface Exploration

Several space agencies have announced plans to return humans to the Moon in the near future. The objectives of these missions include using the Moon as a stepping-stone towards crewed missions to Mars, to test advanced technology, and to further exploration of the Moon for scientific research and in-situ resource utilization. To meet these objectives, it will be necessary to establish and operate a lunar base. As a result, a wide variety of tasks that may pose a number of crew health and safety risks will need to be performed on the surface of the Moon. Therefore, to ensure sustainable human presence on the Moon and beyond, it is essential to anticipate potential risks, assess the impact of each risk, and devise mitigation strategies. To address this, a nine-week intensive investigation was performed by an international, interdisciplinary and intercultural team on how to maximize crew safety on the lunar surface through a symbiotic relationship between astronauts and robots.

A Novel Technique for Investigating the Nature and Origins of Deposits Formed in High Pressure Fuel Injection Equipment

Recent developments in diesel fuel injection equipment coupled with moves to using ULSD and biodiesel blends has seen an increase in the number of reports, from both engine manufacturers and fleet operators, regarding fuel system deposit issues. Preliminary work performed to characterise these deposits showed them to be complicated mixtures, predominantly carbon like but also containing other possible carbon precursor materials. This paper describes the application of the combination of hydropyrolysis, gas chromatography and mass spectrometry to the analysis of these deposits. It also discusses the insights that such analysis can bring to the constitution and origin of these deposits.
