This SAE Standard specifies the requirements to help prevent inadvertent and to discourage deliberate electrical connection at the starter motor solenoid or starter relay which may result in the starter pinion engaging the ring gear. This document applies to off-road, self-propelled work machines, as identified in SAE J1116, which have the potential of powered movement as a direct result of the starter pinion engaging the ring gear.
This Standard applies to General Purpose Industrial Machines described in Category 2 of SAE J1116, but excludes skid steer loaders (covered by SAE J1388). Protection for the operator of an attachment (for example, a backhoe) is excluded from the scope of this document.

The objective of this standard, with referenced documents, is to establish performance requirements of protective systems for operators of industrial equipment. The scope excludes mast-type forklifts and is limited to protection for the vehicle driver from hazards of vehicle rollover and/or falling objects. Protection for the operator of an attachment (for example, a backhoe) is not specifically included in the scope of this standard.
