Laser-Assisted Filler-Based Joining for Battery Assembly in Aviation

Abstract A key problem of the construction of fully electric aircraft is the limited energy density of battery packs. It is generally accepted that this can only be overcome via new, denser battery chemistry together with a further increase in the efficiency of power utilization. One appealing approach for achieving the latter is using laser-assisted filler-based joining technologies, which offers unprecedented flexibility for achieving battery cell connections with the least possible electrical loss. This contribution presents our results on the effect of various experimental and process parameters on the electrical and mechanical properties of the laser-formed bond.

An Investigation on the Electrical Energy Capacity of Cylindrical Lithium-Ion and Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery Cells for Hybrid Aircraft

Abstract Improving the energy performance of batteries can increase the reliability of electric aircraft. To achieve this goal, battery management systems (BMS) are required to keep the temperature within the battery pack and cells below the safety limits and make the temperature distribution as even as possible. Batteries have a limited service life as a result of unwanted chemical reactions, physical changes that cause the loss of active materials in the structure, and internal resistance increase during the charging and discharging cycle of the battery. These changes usually affect the electrical performance of batteries. Battery life can be increased only by reducing or preventing unwanted chemical reactions. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are a suitable option due to their high specific energy and energy density advantages. In this study, the necessity of heat management is emphasized. The discharge tests of the Li-ion battery provided 94.6 Wh under 10C and 90.9 Wh under 1C.

Three-Dimensional Thermal Study on Lithium-Ion Batteries in a Hybrid Aircraft: Numerical and Experimental Investigations

Abstract The range of an aircraft is determined by the amount of energy that its batteries can store. Today, larger batteries are used to increase the range of electric vehicles, although energy efficiency decreases as the weight of the vehicles increases. Among the elements, lithium (Li) is the lightest and has the highest electrochemical potential. Therefore, the use of Li-ion batteries is recommended for hybrid aircraft. In addition, Li-ion batteries are the most common type of battery that is used in portable electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. However, Li-ion batteries may explode due to temperature. Therefore, the thermal analysis of Li-ion batteries was investigated both experimentally and numerically. Li-ion batteries were connected in series (the number is 9). Noboru’s theory of heat generation was discussed in the estimation of energy data.

Neural Partial Differentiation-Based Estimation of Terminal Airspace Sector Capacity

Abstract The main focus of this article is the online estimation of the terminal airspace sector capacity from the Air Traffic Controller 0ATC) dynamical neural model using Neural Partial Differentiation (NPD) with permissible safe separation and affordable workload. For this purpose, a primarily neural model of a multi-input-single-output (MISO) ATC dynamical system is established, and the NPD method is used to estimate the model parameters from the experimental data. These estimated parameters have a less relative standard deviation, and hence the model validation results show that the predicted neural model response is well matched with the intervention of the ATC workload. Moreover, the proposed neural network-based approach works well with the experimental data online as it does not require the initial values of model parameters, which are unknown in practice.

Lightweight Carbon Composite Chassis for Engine Start Lithium Batteries

Abstract The supersession of metallic alloys with lightweight, high-strength composites is popular in the aircraft industry. However, aviation electronic enclosures for large format batteries and high power conversion electronics are still primarily made of aluminum alloys. These aluminum enclosures have attractive properties regrading structural integrity for the heavy internal parts, electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppression, electrical bonding for the internal cells, and/or electronics and failure containment. This paper details a lightweight carbon fiber composite chassis developed at Meggitt Sensing Systems (MSS) Securaplane, with a copper metallic mesh co-cured onto the internal surfaces resulting in a 50% reduction in weight when compared to its aluminum counterpart. In addition to significant weight reduction, it provides equal or improved performance with respect to EMI, structural and flammability performance.

Quantitative Assessment of Minor Incidents to Accident Transformation Probability and Its Impact on Aerodrome Operations

Abstract Numerous operational procedures regulate aerodrome ground traffic. Detailed solutions in these procedures often come from preventive recommendations formulated as a result of accident cause analysis. With time, the conclusions drawn based on incidents, i.e., events that did not result in material damage or casualties, are becoming increasingly significant. In this article, we propose a new method for determining the probability of an incident turning into an air accident, based on the example of aerodrome traffic operations. Premises conducive to an accident in the considered class of events depend on both human and physical factors. Thus a hybrid approach was applied. We used a fuzzy inference system to analyze the premises dependent on vehicle operators, while the simulation method was selected to examine the premises dependent on physical factors. Both were integrated using the technique of event trees with fuzzy probabilities (ETFP).

According to the International Civil Aviation Organization, the world aviation air traffic has grown by an average yearly rate of 5% over the last thirty years, until the devastating downturn brought on by the COVID crisis of 2020. Regardless of the current situation, there are still a number of issues and challenges that the industry is confronted with, not the least of which are related to sustainability, the conversion to electrical usage, the challenge of increasing propulsion efficiency in conventional propulsion, the digital transformation of the entire ecosystem, etc. In response, system developers and researchers in the field are working on a number of key technologies and methodologies to solve some of these issues. The Sustainable Aviation Research Society (SARES), a global organization that seeks to encourage research in this area and helps disseminate knowledge via conferences and symposia, has been organizing meetings to promote sustainable aviation over the five years.

Design of a 1.2 kW Interleaved Synchronous Buck Converter for Retrofit Applications in Aviation Systems

Abstract Presently, 270 V direct current (DC) systems replace older 28 V DC voltage systems in both the civil and military aviation industry due to the requirement for more electrical power needs on board. Therefore, the existing avionics require retrofitting. The conversion from 270 V to 28 V appears to be quite promising for both old and new systems. This study aims to design an interleaved synchronous modular buck converter topology as a candidate for these requirements. Calculations for the converter design are conducted considering aviation standards. Switching with pulse-width modulation (PWM) is used to control the power converter. A double-loop feedback control system based on voltage and current feedback is designed. Therefore, the buck converter circuit with 1145 W power output is proposed, which supplies a 28 V and 41 A DC output from a 270 V DC input. The concept is verified using simulations and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experimental results.

Anomaly Detection for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Sensor Data Using a Stacked Recurrent Autoencoder Method with Dynamic Thresholding

Abstract With substantial recent developments in aviation technologies, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming increasingly integrated in commercial and military operations internationally. Research on the applications of aircraft data is essential in improving safety, reducing operational costs, and developing the next frontier of aerial technology. Having an outlier detection system that can accurately identify anomalous behavior in aircraft is crucial for these reasons. This article proposes a system incorporating a long short-term memory (LSTM) deep learning autoencoder-based method with a novel dynamic thresholding algorithm and weighted loss function for anomaly detection of a UAV dataset, in order to contribute to the ongoing efforts that leverage innovations in machine learning and data analysis within the aviation industry.

Supervised Learning Classification Applications in Fault Detection and Diagnosis: An Overview of Implementations in Unmanned Aerial Systems

Abstract Statistical machine learning classification methods have been widely used in the fault detection analysis in several engineering domains. This motivates us to provide in this article an overview on the application of these methods in the fault diagnosis strategies and also their successful use in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) systems. Different existing aspects including the implementation conditions, offline design, and online computation algorithms as well as computation complexity and detection time are discussed in detail. Evaluation and validation of these aspects have been ensured by a simple demonstration of the basic classification methods and neural network techniques in solving the fault detection and diagnosis problem of the propulsion system failure of a multirotor UAV. A testing platform of an Hexarotor UAV is completely realized.

A Reduced-Order Modeling Framework for Simulating Signatures of Faults in a Bladed Disk

Abstract This article reports a reduced-order modeling framework of bladed disks on a rotating shaft to simulate the vibration signature of faults in different components, aiming toward simulated data-driven machine learning. We have employed lumped and one-dimensional analytical models of the subcomponents for better insight into the complex dynamic response. The framework addresses some of the challenges encountered in analyzing and optimizing fault detection and identification schemes for health monitoring of aeroengines and other rotating machinery. We model the bladed disks and shafts by combining lumped elements and one-dimensional finite elements, leading to a coupled system. The simulation results are in good agreement with previously published data. We model and analyze the cracks in a blade with their effective reduced stiffness approximation.

Comprehensive Evaluation of Chinese Low-Cost Airlines Network Based on Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution Approach

Abstract For Chinese low-cost airlines network, this article employed two indicators: network topology indexes, to evaluate the current status of the network, and economic performance indexes, to analyze the development potential of the network. From the topology indexes, each airline has its own different characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages, while from economic and socio-demographic indexes, Spring Airlines, West Air, and China United Airlines have obvious advantages and other airlines have distinct shortcomings. Then, the TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution) method was used to comprehensively evaluate Chinese low-cost airlines. The results show that the ranking in terms of network is: Spring Airlines, Western Airlines, China United Airlines, Lucky Air, 9 Air, Chengdu Airlines, and also show Chinese low-cost airlines network is in initial and growth stage.

Material Recognition Technology of Internal Loose Particles in Sealed Electronic Components Based on Random Forest

Abstract Sealed electronic components are the basic components of aerospace equipment, but the issue of internal loose particles greatly increases the risk of aerospace equipment. Traditional material recognition technology has a low recognition rate and is difficult to be applied in practice. To address this issue, this article proposes transforming the problem of acquiring material information into the multi-category recognition problem. First, constructing an experimental platform for material recognition. Features for material identification are selected and extracted from the signals, forming a feature vector, and ultimately establishing material datasets. Then, the problem of material data imbalance is addressed through a newly designed direct artificial sample generation method. Finally, various identification algorithms are compared, and the optimal material identification model is integrated into the system for practical testing.

Computational Investigation of a Flexible Airframe Taxiing Over an Uneven Runway for Aircraft Vibration Testing

Abstract Ground vibration testing (GVT) is an important phase of the development, or the structural modification of an aircraft program. The modes of vibration and their associated parameters extracted from the GVT are used to modify the structural model of the aircraft to make more reliable dynamics predictions to satisfy certification authorities. Due to the high cost and the extensive preparations for such tests, a new method of vibration testing called taxi vibration testing (TVT) rooted in operational modal analysis (OMA) was recently proposed and investigated by the German Institute for Aerospace Research (DLR) as alternative to conventional GVT. In this investigation, a computational framework based on fully coupled flexible multibody dynamics for TVT is presented to further investigate the applicability of the TVT to flexible airframes. The time domain decomposition (TDD) method for OMA was used to postprocess the response of the airframe during a TVT.

Expert’s Heuristic Biases in Airport Predictive Risk Assessments

Abstract Expert perceptions have been increasingly used to perform risk assessments in airport predictive risk assessments in recent years. Although it is known that biases are less influential in groups of experts when compared to laypeople, they still can be residually present in such tasks with this specific group. Therefore, this article aims to propose (1) the pragmatic organization of knowledge about the biases that may affect airport risk assessments by groups of experts and (2) which of them most often arise in this type of analysis and at what intensity. For the development of the work, we carried out a dense bibliographic review of the theme. Later, we performed a predictive risk assessment and a survey, with the support of an experienced group of 30 experts from Brazilian regulatory agency and airport operators.

Recognition Method for Electronic Component Signals Based on LR-SMOTE and Improved Random Forest Algorithm

Abstract Loose particles are a major problem affecting the performance and safety of aerospace electronic components. The current particle impact noise detection (PIND) method used in these components suffers from two main issues: data collection imbalance and unstable machine-learning-based recognition models that lead to redundant signal misclassification and reduced detection accuracy. To address these issues, we propose a signal identification method using the limited random synthetic minority oversampling technique (LR-SMOTE) for unbalanced data processing and an optimized random forest (RF) algorithm to detect loose particles. LR-SMOTE expands the generation space beyond the original SMOTE oversampling algorithm, generating more representative data for underrepresented classes. We then use an RF optimization algorithm based on the correlation measure to identify loose particle signals in balanced data.
