Design Analysis of High Power Density Additively Manufactured Induction Motor

Induction machines (IM) are considered work horse for industrial applications due to their rugged, reliable and inexpensive nature; however, their low power density restricts their use in volume and weight limited environments such as an aerospace, traction and propulsion applications. Given recent advancements in additive manufacturing technologies, this paper presents opportunity to improve power density of induction machines by taking advantage of higher slot fill factor (SFF) (defined as ratio of bare copper area to slot area) is explored. Increase in SFF is achieved by deposition of copper in much more compact way than conventional manufacturing methods of winding in electrical machines. Thus a design tradeoff study for an induction motor with improved SFF is essential to identify and highlight the potentials of IM for high power density applications and is elaborated in this paper.

Development Testing of a High Differential Pressure (HDP) Water Electrolysis Cell Stack for the High Pressure Oxygen Generating Assembly (HPOGA)

The International Space Station (ISS) requires advanced life support to continue its mission as a permanently-manned space laboratory and to reduce logistic resupply requirements as the Space Shuttle retires from service. Additionally, as humans reach to explore the moon and Mars, advanced vehicles and extraterrestrial bases will rely on life support systems that feature in-situ resource utilization to minimize launch weight and enhance mission capability. An obvious goal is the development of advanced systems that meet the requirements of both mission scenarios to reduce development costs by deploying common modules. A high pressure oxygen generating assembly (HPOGA) utilizing a high differential pressure (HDP) water electrolysis cell stack can provide a recharge capability for the high pressure oxygen storage tanks on-board the ISS independently of the Space Shuttle as well as offer a pathway for advanced life support equipment for future manned space exploration missions.

Improving the Measurement Accuracy of Water Partial Pressure Using the Major Constituent Analyzer

The Major Constituent Analyzer (MCA) is a mass spectrometer based system that measures the major components of the International Space Station (ISS) atmosphere, including water. The measurement of water vapor has been difficult due to adsorption on various surfaces in the sample path, and has thus far been discounted in MCA atmosphere monitoring. This paper summarizes the results in identifying the primary source of the problem, the modeling being used to further elucidate the water surface adsorption/desorption process, and the proposed means available to provide a stable calibration and accurate measure of the water abundance.

Highly Flexible Automated Manufacturing of Composite Structures Consisting of Limp Carbon Fibre Textiles

Due to the conventional autoclaving of pre-impregnated materials causes high costs in the production of carbon fibre structures, new injection methods have become more and more relevant. The research project “CFK-Tex” focuses on the automated handling and processing of preforms out of dry carbon fibre textiles. Regarding the advantages in quality improvement and process time, an automation of all process steps is getting enforced. The major challenge, in addition to the difficult handling-properties of the materials and high quality demands, is the enormous variety of outline variants caused by small production quantities but many different textile cuts per part. In the first step the requirements of an automated system are exactly analyzed considering the specific material properties as well as process and product based characteristics.

Testing of 300 Series Stainless Steel Tubing for Aerospace Applications

The applicability, interpretation, and implementation of the testing requirements, in various aerospace and military tubing material specifications have caused confusion across the tubing industry. Despite the release of AMS specifications, procurement entities continue to purchase material produced to the older and often cancelled Mil-T specifications. In addition to mechanical properties, these specifications cover requirements including composition, grain size, heat treating, passivation, pressure testing, formability, non-destructive testing, and sampling frequency. Confusion may result for tubing producers who also supply commercial grade tubing having similar mechanical properties aerospace tubing. Ultimately it is the responsibility of the tubing manufacturer to understand the risks involved in meeting the requirements of the aerospace material specifications, both Military and AMS.

Laundry Study for a Lunar Outpost

In support of the Constellation Program, NASA conducted an analysis of crew clothing and laundry options. Disposable clothing is currently used in human space missions. However, the new mission duration, goals, launch penalties and habitat environments may lead to a different conclusion. Mass and volume for disposable clothing are major penalties in long-duration human missions. Equivalent System Mass (ESM) of crew clothing and hygiene towels was estimated at about 11% of total life support system ESM for a 4-crew, 10-year Lunar Outpost mission. Ways to lessen this penalty include: reduce clothing supply mass through using clothes made of advanced fabrics, reduce daily usage rate by extending wear duration and employing a laundry with reusable clothing. Lunar habitat atmosphere pressure and therefore oxygen volume percentage will be different from Space Station or Shuttle. Thus flammability of clothing must be revisited.

Incorporating Advanced Controls, Displays and other Smart Elements into Space Suit Design

The MX-2 neutral buoyancy space suit analogue has been designed and developed at the University of Maryland to facilitate analysis of space suit components and assessment of the benefits of advanced space suit technologies, The MX-2 replicates the salient features of microgravity pressure suits, including the induced joint torques, visual, auditory and thermal environments, and microgravity through the use of neutral buoyancy simulation. In this paper, design upgrades and recent operations of the suit are outlined, including many experiments and tests of advanced space suit technologies, This paper focuses on the work done using the MX-2 to implement and investigate various advanced controls and displays within the suit, to enhance crewmember situational awareness and effectiveness, and enable human-robotic interaction.

Unique Regeneration Steps for the Sorbent-Based Atmosphere Revitalization System Designed for CO2 and H2O Removal from Spacecraft Cabins

An SBAR system for H2O and CO2 removal from spacecraft cabin air was studied both experimentally and theoretically. An emphasis was placed on its purgeless, deep vacuum regeneration step. Three evacuation steps were studied: 1) single ended depressurization (SED) through the feed end of the bed; 2) simultaneous dual ended depressurization (DED) through both ends of the bed; and 3) simultaneous triple ended depressurization (TED) through both ends of the bed and a port located at some axial position. TED resulted in a lower average bed pressure at the end of evacuation compared to DED, which, in turn caused more CO2 to be removed. An optimal third port location also existed. The use of TED should allow the SBAR bed size to be reduced.

Development of a Predictive Model for Gasoline Vehicle Particulate Matter Emissions

The relationship between gasoline properties and vehicle particulate matter emissions was investigated, for the purpose of constructing a predictive model. Various chemical species were individually blended with an indolene base fuel, and the solid particulate number (PN) emissions from each blend were measured over the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). The results indicated that aromatics with a high boiling point and a high double bond equivalent (DBE) value tended to produce more PN emissions. However, high boiling point components with low DBE values, such as paraffins, displayed only a minor effect on PN. Upon further analysis of the test results, it was also confirmed that low vapor pressure components correlated with high PN emissions, as might be expected based on their combustion behavior. A predictive model, termed the “PM Index,” was constructed based on the weight fraction, vapor pressure, and DBE value of each component in the fuel.

Hybrid Deployable Habitat Structures for Orbital and Lunar/Planetary Applications

Extended-duration space missions entailing expanded crew sizes and activities will produce a need for habitats that combine advantages of conventional hard/fixed and soft/deployable structures. Rigid modules enable pre-integration of utility and equipment systems prior to launch and apply proven technologies. Soft pressure vessels can be compacted to optimize launch payload volume and habitable volume/mass efficiencies, but impose hardware integration challenges, operational readiness requirements, and long-term structural performance uncertainties. This paper discusses concepts and applications that incorporate both approaches. Examples draw upon research and design investigations undertaken by SICSA in support of a NASA-sponsored study conducted by two independent teams, one headed by Boeing, and the other by ILC-Dover. SICSA had key roles in developing overall configuration architectures for both teams.

TBL Modeling for Aircraft Interior Noise Prediction Using Statistical Energy Analysis

The turbulent boundary layer (TBL) that forms on the outside of a commercial airplane in flight is a significant source of noise. During cruise, the TBL can be the dominant source of noise. Because it is a significant contributor to the interior noise, it is desirable to predict the noise due to the TBL. One modeling approach for the acoustic prediction is statistical energy analysis (SEA). This technique has been adopted by North American commercial airplane manufacturers. The flow over the airplane is so complex that a fully resolved pressure field required for noise predictions is not currently analytically or numerically tractable. The current practice is to idealize the flows as regional and use empirical models for the pressure distribution. Even at this level of idealization, modelers do not agree on appropriate models for the pressure distributions. A description of the wall pressure is insufficient to predict the structural response. A structural model is also required.

Emerging Technologies for Use in Aerospace Bonded Assemblies

Several new technologies are now emerging to improve adhesive supply and formulation along with surface treatments that have the potential to offer significant improvements to both surface energy and cleanliness [3]. Additionally, the miniaturisation of laboratory techniques into portable equipment offers potential for online surface energy and chemical analysis measurement for use as quality control measures in a production environment. An overview of newly available technology is given here with several devices studied in further detail. Technologies assessed further in this paper are; portable surface contact angle measurement, ambient pressure plasma cleaning, portable FTIR measurement and adhesive mixing equipment. A number of potential applications are outlined for each device based on the operational technique. The practical aspects of implementation and the perceived technology readiness levels for operation, implementation and results are also given.

Continuous-Positional Automatic Ballonet Control System for Airship

This paper is devoted to a method of creating of the automated ballonet system for pressure control inside an airship envelope. Along with the study of the effects of the positional control system parameters, the authors develop novel control scheme. It is based on a new hybrid controller, which combines positional approach to forming the output control signal with a contour of continuous correction of input signal, which defines the pressure drop on the surface of the envelope as a function of the flight altitude. This approach allows reducing the effect of self-oscillations of airship envelope internal pressure on the flight altitude. In order to prove the new approach the mathematical model is being obtained. The results of the derivation and simulations of the control system operation are presented in this paper.

This paper shows how the quantity demanded, viewed as an independent variable, interacts with customer values, producer costs and constraints. Failure to analyze Demand as Independent Variable (pronounced “Dave”) increases the chances that new programs will not launch, or once started, will fail. All producers in all markets face demand curves that describe their customers' reaction to price changes. Aggregate market demand curves show how buyers react to price changes within broad product sets, while product demand curves show buyer responses to a specific item. Demand curves relate quantities sold relative to their prices. In several military, transit and fleet cases, minimum quantity requirements form upper price boundaries along demand curves. Allowing prices to go so high that buying authorities cannot acquire the required numbers of units likely means that there may not be sufficient resources to form systems that can accomplish the buyers' goals.

New Methodology for Wind Tunnel Calibration Using Neural Networks - EGD Approach

One of the hardest tasks involving wind tunnel characterization is to determine the air-flow condition inside the test section. The Log-Tchebycheff method and the Equal Area method allow calculation of local velocities from measured differential pressures on rectangular and circular ducts. However, these two standard methods for air flow measurement are limited by the number of accurate pressure readings by the Pitot tube. In this paper, a new approach is presented for wind tunnel calibrations. This approach is based on a limited number of dynamic pressure measurements and a predictive technique using Neural Network (NN). To optimize the NN, the extended great deluge (EGD) algorithm is used. Wind tunnel testing involves a large number of variables such as wind direction, velocity, rate flow, turbulence characteristics, temperature variation and pressure distribution on airfoils.

Virtual Integration and Testing of Multifunctional Fuel Cell Systems in Commercial Aircraft

This paper focuses on the virtual integration and test approach used for the evaluation of an automation system developed for the multifunctional operation of fuel cells in commercial aircraft. In order to accomplish the virtual integration a model of the overall automation system is linked with a dynamic model of the complete fuel cell system. For this purpose a modeling approach for complex physical systems is described in this paper. During virtual testing various simulation runs are executed based on automatically generated test cases, which cover a complete flight mission. For this reason a flight mission is modeled as a Statechart that includes next to time- based flight phases also potential events and malfunctions (e.g. engine flame-out, cargo fire). An algorithm is described, which can find all possible state combinations including parallel event sequences.

Manipulation of the Aerodynamic Behavior of the DrivAer Model with Fluidic Oscillators

The effect of an active flow control method is investigated on a 1:4 scale realistic vehicle model called “DrivAer” with notchback geometry. The wind tunnel experiments are conducted at a Reynolds number of Re=3.0·106. Fluidic oscillators are applied at the c-pillars and at the upper rear edge of the window. The actuators are installed inside the hollow designed model emitting a high frequency sweeping jet. The spacing of the actuators, the mass flow rate, and the position of actuation are varied. The effect of the active flow control on the car is investigated with force and surface pressure measurements. The surface trace pattern is visualized with tufts for the active flow control cases and the baseline case. A tuft algorithm analyzes provides statistical data of the flow angles. Moreover, particle image velocimetry measurements are performed in the plane of symmetry for β=0° to capture the flow field at the rear end and the wake.

Aerodynamic Interaction Effects and Surface Pressure Distribution during On-Road Driving Events

Temporal changes of the onset flow field during on-road driving events, such as overtaking and passing, causes a complex interaction between aerodynamics of two vehicles. This can affect vehicle dynamics as well as steering input from the driver. In extreme situations this can cause a risk to driving comfort and safety. In order to optimize the shape of a vehicle, a fundamental understanding of the underlying pressure distribution during these scenarios is necessary. This paper describes the experimental method to measure the surface pressure and vehicle motion during overtaking a vehicle and passing a vehicle on a proving ground. Two primary vehicles, a C-Hatchback and a B-Crossover, were instrumented and a medium sized van and a 3.5 t truck were used as secondary vehicles without instrumentation. The highly asymmetric pressure distribution acting on the primary vehicles during the driving events is characterized using a simplified illustration method.

Investigating Combustion in a Mini Internal Combustion Engine

Owing to a high power-to-weight ratio, mini internal combustion engine is used in propelling an unmanned air vehicle. In comparison to the performance characteristics, the investigations on the combustion aspects of mini engines are scanty. This investigation concerns study of the combustion process of a mini engine and its variability. For this purpose, the experimental cylinder pressure histories were obtained on a laboratory set-up of a 7.45 cm3 capacity mini engine. The analyses of experimental data at different throttle settings reveal that there existed a varied range of rich and lean misfiring limits around a reference equivalence ratio that corresponds to the respective maximum indicated mean effective pressure. At the limiting equivalence ratios, cylinder pressure measurements showed a high degree of cycle-to-cycle variations. In some cases, a slow combustion or misfiring event preceded a rapid combustion.
