Experimental Investigation of the Near Wall Flow Downstream of a Passenger Car Wheel Arch

Abstract The flow around and downstream of the front wheels of passenger cars is highly complex and characterized by flow structure interactions between the external flow, fluid exiting through the wheelhouse, flow from the engine bay and the underbody. In the present paper the near wall flow downstream of the front wheel house is analyzed, combining two traditional methods. A tuft visualization method is used to obtain the limiting streamline pattern and information about the near wall flow direction. Additionally, time resolved surface pressure measurements are used to study the pressure distribution and the standard deviation. The propagation of the occurring flow structures is investigated by cross correlations of the pressure signal and a spectral analysis provides the characteristic frequencies of the investigated flow.

Design, Analysis, Simulation and Validation of Automobile Suspension System Using Drive-Shaft as a Suspension Link

Abstract With increasing demands for higher performance along with lower vehicle emissions, lightweight vehicle system construction is key to meet such demands. Suspension and transmission assemblies being the key areas for weight-reduction, we have designed a revolutionary new type of suspension system which combines the suspension links with the powertrain assembly and thus completely eliminates one suspension member. Less weight means lower fuel-consumption with improved passenger-comfort and road-holding due to reduction in unsprung mass. Elimination of a suspension link reduces the overall cost of material, machining & fabrication making our design cost-effective than existing setups. This paper deals with the design and implementation of of our concept. A working prototype is also constructed and tested which completely validates our design.

Introducing the Modified Tire Power Loss and Resistant Force Regarding Longitudinal Slip

Abstract Investigation of vehicle resistant forces and power losses is of crucial importance owing to current state of energy consumption in transport sector. Meanwhile, considerable portion of resistant forces in a ground vehicle is traced back to tires. Pneumatic tires are known to be a source of energy dissipation as a consequence of their viscoelastic nature. The current study aims to provide a modification to tire resistance by considering the power loss in a tire due to longitudinal slip. The modified tire resistance is comprised of rolling resistance and a newly introduced resistance caused by tire slip, called slip resistance. The physical model is chosen for parameters sensitivity study since the tractive force is described in this model via tangible physical parameters, e.g. tire tangential stiffness, coefficient of friction, and contact patch length.

Effect of Spoke Design and Material Nonlinearity on Non-Pneumatic Tire Stiffness and Durability Performance

Abstract The non-pneumatic tire (NPT) has been widely used due to its advantages of no run-flat, no need for air maintenance, low rolling resistance, and improvement of passenger comfort due to its better shock absorption. It has a variety of applications in military vehicles, earthmovers, the lunar rover, stair-climbing vehicles, etc. Recently, the Unique Puncture-Proof Tire System (UPTIS) NPT has been introduced for passenger vehicles. In this study, three different design configurations, viz., Tweel, Honeycomb, and newly developed UPTIS, have been compared. The effect of polyurethane (PU) material nonlinearity has also been introduced by applying five different nonlinear PU material properties in the spokes. The combined analysis of the PU material nonlinearity and spoke design configuration on the overall tire stiffness and spoke damage prediction is done using three-dimensional (3D) finite element modelling (FEM) simulations performed in ANSYS 16.0.

Simulation of the Steering System Power Demand during the Concept Phase Focusing on Tire Modelling at Standstill

Abstract Estimating the power demand of a steering system is one of the main tasks during steering system development in the concept phase of a vehicle development process. Most critical for typical axle kinematics are parking maneuvers with simultaneously high rack forces and velocities. Therefore, the focus of the article is a tire model for standstill, which can be parametrized without measurements, only having tire dimensions and conditions (inflation pressure and wheel load) as input. Combined with a double-track model, a vehicle model is developed, which is able to predict the rack force and is fully applicable during the concept phase. The article demonstrates quantitatively that the tie rod forces, and thereby especially the tire bore torque, cause the largest fraction of the power demand at the rack. For this reason, the prediction of the bore torque is investigated in detail, whereby basic approaches from the literature are analyzed and enhanced.

Multi-Chamber Tire Concept for Low Rolling-Resistance

Abstract Rolling-resistance is leading the direction of numerous tire developments due to its significant effect on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions considering the vehicles in use globally. Many attempts were made to reduce rolling-resistance in vehicles, but with no or limited success due to tire complexity and trade-offs. This article investigates the concept of multiple chambers inside the tire as a potential alternative solution for reducing rolling-resistance. To accomplish that, novel multi-chamber designs were introduced and numerically simulated through finite-element (FE) modeling. The FE models were compared against a standard design as the baseline. The influences on rolling-resistance, grip, cornering, and mechanical comfort were studied. The multi-chambers tire model reduced rolling-resistance considerably with acceptable trade-offs. Independent air volumes isolating tread from sidewalls would maintain tire’s profile effectively.

Influence of Intelligent Active Suspension System Controller Design Techniques on Vehicle Braking Characteristics

Abstract This article presents a comprehensive investigation for the interaction between vehicle ride vibration control and braking control using two degrees of freedom (2DOF) quarter vehicle model. A typical limited bandwidth active suspension system with nonlinear spring and damping characteristics of practical hydraulic and pneumatic components is controlled to regulate both suspension and tire forces and therefore provide the optimum ride comfort and braking performance of an anti-lock brake system (ABS). In order to design a suitable controller for this nonlinear integrated system, various control techniques are followed including state feedback tuned using Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR), state feedback tuned using Genetic Algorithm (GA), Proportional Integrated (PI) tuned genetically, and Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC). The ABS control system is designed to limit skid ratio below threshold of 15%.

A Review on Physical Mechanisms of Tire-Pavement Interaction Noise

Abstract Tire-pavement interaction noise (TPIN) dominates for passenger cars above 40 km/h and trucks above 70 km/h. Numerous studies have attempted to uncover and distinguish the basic mechanisms of TPIN. However, intense debate is still ongoing about the validity of these mechanisms. In this work, the physical mechanisms proposed in the literature were reviewed and divided into three categories: generation mechanisms, amplification mechanisms, and attenuation mechanisms. The purpose of this article is to gather the published general opinions for further open discussions.

An Optical-Based Technique to Obtain Vibration Characteristics of Rotating Tires

Abstract The dynamic characteristics of tires are critical in the overall vibrations of vehicles because the tire-road interface is the only medium of energy transfer between the vehicle and the road surface. Obtaining the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the tire helps in improving the comfort of the passengers. The vibrational characteristics of structures are usually obtained by performing conventional impact hammer modal testing, in which the structure is excited with an impact hammer and the response of the structure under excitation is captured using accelerometers. However, this approach only provides the response of the structure at a few discrete locations, and it is challenging to use this procedure for rotating structures. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) helps in overcoming these challenges by providing the full-field response of the structure.

Metallurgical Approach for Improving Life and Brinell Resistance in Wheel Hub Units

Abstract Raceway Brinell damage is one major cause of wheel bearing (hub unit) noise during driving. Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) customers have asked continuously for its improvement to the wheel bearing supply base. Generally, raceway Brinelling in a wheel hub unit is a consequence of metallic yielding from high external loading in a severe environment usually involving a side impact to the wheel and tire. Thus, increasing the yielding strength of steel can lead to higher resistance to Brinell damage. Both the outer ring and hub based on Generation 3 (Gen. 3) wheel unit are typically manufactured using by AISI 1055 bearing quality steel (BQS); these components undergo controlled cooling to establish the core properties then case hardening via induction hardening (IH). This paper presents a modified grade of steel and its IH design that targets longer life and improves Brinell resistance developed by ILJIN AMRC (Advanced Materials Research Center).

Stability Analysis of Combined Braking System of Tractor-Semitrailer Based on Phase-Plane Method

Abstract An analysis method for the stability of combined braking system of tractor-semitrailer based on phase-plane is investigated. Based on a 9 degree of freedom model, considering longitudinal load transfer, nonlinear model of tire and other factors, the braking stability of tractor-semitrailer is analyzed graphically on the phase plane. The stability of both tractor and semitrailer with different retarder gear is validated with the energy plane, β plane, yaw angle plane and hinged angle plane. The result indicates that in the long downhill with curve condition, both tractor and semitrailer show good stability when retarder is working at 1st and 2nd gear, and when it is at 3rd gear, the tractor is close to be unstable while semitrailer is unstable already. Besides, tractor and semitrailer both lose stability when retarder is working at the 4th gear.

Extending the Magic Formula Tire Model for Large Inflation Pressure Changes by Using Measurement Data from a Corner Module Test Rig

Abstract Since the tire inflation pressure has a significant influence on safety, comfort and environmental behavior of a vehicle, the choice of the optimal inflation pressure is always a conflict of aims. The development of a highly dynamic Tire Pressure Control System (TPCS) can reduce the conflict of minimal rolling resistance and maximal traction. To study the influence of the tire inflation pressure on longitudinal tire characteristics under laboratory conditions, an experimental sensitivity analysis is performed using a multivalent usable Corner Module Test Rig (CMTR) developed by the Automotive Engineering Group at Technische Universität Ilmenau. The test rig is designed to analyze suspension system and tire characteristics on a roller of the recently installed 4 chassis roller dynamometer. Camber angle, toe angle and wheel load can be adjusted continuously. In addition, it is possible to control the temperature of the test environment between −20 °C and +45 °C.

Enhanced Coil Spring Modeling in Passenger Car Suspension for Improved Target Setting Process

Abstract The problem addressed in this work is how to formulate accurate targets for coil springs in passenger car suspensions to ensure that the required ride height and wheel rate are achieved. The issue arises because suspensions often tend to introduce significant spring deformations other than a purely axial compression. Although these effects are quite common, their influence on suspension performance is still not well understood. To this purpose, a new enhanced spring model is presented. The theory behind the model is explained and the relationship between spring and suspension performance discussed in detail. To validate formulations, a series of numerical simulations has been carried out demonstrating the model accuracy. Finally, a novel approach to spring target setting is proposed based on this advanced spring model.

Vehicle Stability Control through Optimized Coordination of Active Rear Steering and Differential Driving/Braking

Abstract In this article, a hierarchical coordinated control algorithm for integrating active rear steering and driving/braking force distribution (ARS+D/BFD) was presented. The upper-level control was synthesized to generate the required rear steering angle and external yaw moment by using a sliding-mode controller. In the lower-level controller, a control allocation algorithm considering driving/braking actuators and tire forces constraints was designed to assign the desired yaw moment to the four wheels. To this end, an optimization problem including several equality and inequality constraints were defined and solved analytically. Finally, computer simulation results suggest that the proposed hierarchical control scheme was able to help to achieve substantial enhancements in handling performance and stability.

A Novel Coordinated Algorithm for Vehicle Stability Based on Optimal Guaranteed Cost Control Theory

Abstract Nowadays, with the great advancement of automobile intellectualization, vehicle integrated dynamic control is increasingly becoming a hot research field. For vehicle stability, this article focuses on the coordinated control of Direct Yaw-moment Control (DYC) and Active Front Steering (AFS). First of all, the nominal control variables (yaw rate and sideslip angle) are designed based on the linear two Degrees of Freedom (2 DOF) vehicle model, in which the phase difference between the actual and nominal variables has been pointed out due to the approximate substitution with first-order time-delay transfer function. Secondly, considering the uncertainty of cornering stiffness per axle, and increasing robustness of the system, the Optimal Guaranteed Cost Control (OGCC) theory is adopted to design the coordinated controller.

Developing an Experimental Setup for Real-Time Road Surface Identification Using Intelligent Tires

Abstract Road surface characteristics directly influence vehicle safety and performance, and its knowledge can be instrumental to road transportation system safety. This work focuses on the development of a test setup, which was utilized for real-time implementation of a road surface identification algorithm based on the acceleration response of an intelligent tire. Analysis of frequency domain data was used to leverage the tire-road contact information being relayed through the acceleration data. A signal processing algorithm was developed to separate each tire revolution, analyze it in real time, and convert it to the frequency domain in real time. In the end, the performance of the setup was validated with results from the literature, and the distinguishing signature possessed by each surface was used to categorize different terrains into the respective surface categories (Dry Asphalt, Wet Asphalt, Concrete) in real time.

System for Strain-Distribution Visualization and Deformation Measurement of Tread Block under Fast-Rotating Tires

Abstract Although tread block deformation analysis is important, the deformation measurement is difficult because fast-rotating tires maintain a continuous contact with the road surface. Furthermore, capturing small displacements near the edge of tread blocks using a high-speed camera is difficult because of the particularly limited resolution. Additionally, the tread blocks being significantly deformed at the edge and susceptible to wear powder, the state change of the feature points, is highly probable. To overcome these problems, a system that obtains high-resolution images and measures the deformation of a fast-rotating body (tire) is proposed herein. The developed system captures the deformation behavior through intermittent imaging. To further measure the strain distribution, fine tracking markers are drawn on the tread block using a laser processing machine. The displacement of the marker is calculated using the particle mask correlation method.

Initial Pitch Control for Semi-active Suspension System

Abstract The aim of this study is to develop an Add-On Feature that could support the semi-active suspension system controller during longitudinal dynamics maneuvers. The Add-On Feature called Initial Pitch Control (IPC) is activated during launching, shifting, and braking to enhance the pitch motion characteristics and road-holding capability. A sixteen degrees-of-freedom (DoF) vehicle mathematical model represents the vertical and longitudinal dynamics developed and validated via laboratory and road tests. A hydraulic four-poster test rig is used to carry out the laboratory tests for the vertical dynamics verification, while the longitudinal dynamic verification is achieved through the performed tests on a highway track. In order to design the IPC algorithm, the Rule-Optimized (RO) semi-active suspension controller, an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) controller, and seven gears Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) controller are implemented in the vehicle model.

A New Approach of Antiskid Braking System (ABS) via Disk Pad Position Control (PPC) Method

Abstract A classical antiskid brake system (ABS) is typically used to control the brake fluid pressure by creating repeated cycles of decreasing and increasing brake force to avoid wheel locking, causing the fluctuation of the brake hydraulic pressure and resulting in vibration during wheel rotation. This article proposes a new approach of skid control for ABS by controlling the disk pad position. This new approach involves using a modest control method to determine the optimal skid that allows the wheel to exert maximum friction force for decelerating the vehicle by shifting the brake pad position instead of modulating the brake fluid pressure. This pad position control (PPC) method works in a continuous manner. Therefore, no rapid changes are required in the brake pressure and wheel rotation speed. To identify the PPC braking performance, braking test simulations and experiments have been carried out.
