Timber Utility Pole Fracture Mechanics Due to Non-Deformable and Deformable Moving Barrier Impacts

The energy dissipated by the fracture of wooden utility poles during vehicle impacts is not currently well documented, is dependent upon non-homogenous timber characteristics, and can therefore be difficult to quantify. While there is significant literature regarding the static and quasi-static properties of wood as a building material, there is a narrow body of literature regarding the viscoelastic properties of timber used for utility poles. Although some theoretical and small-scale testing research has been published, full-scale testing has not been conducted for the purpose of studying the vehicle-pole interaction during impacts. The parameters that define the severity of the impact include the acceleration profile, vehicle velocity change, and energy dissipation. Seven full-scale crash tests were conducted at Exponent's Arizona test facility utilizing both moving deformable and non-deformable barriers into new wooden utility poles.

Energy Dissipation in High Speed Frontal Collisions

One element of primary interest in the analysis and reconstruction of vehicle collisions is an evaluation of impact severity. The severity of an impact is commonly quantified using vehicle closing speeds and/or velocity change (delta-V). One fundamental methodology available to determine the closing speed and corresponding velocity change is an analysis of the collision based on a combination of the principles of Conservation of Momentum and Conservation of Energy. A critical element of this method is an assessment of the amount of kinetic energy that is dissipated during plastic structural deformation (crush) of the involved vehicles. This crush energy assessment is typically based on an interpolation or an extrapolation of data collected during National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) sponsored crash testing at nominal speeds of 30 or 35 mph.

Passenger Vehicle Dynamic Response and Characterization of Side Structure during Low- to Moderate-Speed Side Impacts

A significant portion of real-world passenger vehicle side impacts occur at lower speeds than testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Test data from low- to moderate-speed side impacts involving late-model passenger vehicles is limited, making the evaluation of vehicle impact response, occupant loading, and injury potential challenging. This study provides the results of low- to moderate-speed impact testing involving a late-model mid-size sedan. Two full-scale Non-Deformable Moving Barrier (NDMB) side impact crash tests were conducted at speeds of 6.2 mph (10.0 kph) and 13.4 mph (21.6 kph). Instrumentation on the late-model sedan used for the test series included tri-axis accelerometers and seat belt load cells.

Vehicle Restitution Response in Low Velocity Collisions

The restitution or rebound that occurs as the final phase of a vehicle-to-vehicle collision is quantified by the coefficient of restitution, which is the ratio of the closing velocity to the post-impact separating velocity of the two colliding vehicles. The coefficient of restitution of medium and high velocity collisions is low, [approximately 0.1] since these collisions are quite inelastic, whereas collisions at extremely low velocities are relatively elastic with the coefficient of restitution theoretically approaching 1.0. However, the actual collision restitution magnitude in the low velocity range has not been adequately established. A series of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-barrier collisions resulting in velocity changes in the 2 to 5 miles per hour range was conducted in which vehicles with various bumper configurations [factory standard equipment] were utilized to study the coefficient of restitution at low closing velocities.

Steering Maneuver with Furrow-Tripped Rollovers of a Pickup and Passenger Car

Extensive testing has been conducted to evaluate both the dynamic response of vehicle structures and occupant protection systems in rollover collisions though the use of Anthropomorphic Test Devices (ATDs). Rollover test methods that utilize a fixture to initiate the rollover event include the SAE2114 dolly, inverted drop tests, accelerating vehicle body buck on a decelerating sled, ramp-induced rollovers, and Controlled Rollover Impact System (CRIS) Tests. More recently, programmable steering controllers have been used with sedans, vans, pickup trucks, and SUVs to induce a rollover, primarily for studying the vehicle kinematics for accident reconstruction applications. The goal of this study was to create a prototypical rollover crash test for the study of vehicle dynamics and occupant injury risk where the rollover is initiated by a steering input over realistic terrain without the constraints of previously used test methods.

Passenger Vehicle Response to Low-Speed Impacts Involving a Tractor-Semitrailer

Low-speed sideswipe collisions between tractor-semitrailers and passenger vehicles can result in large movements and extensive areas of visible damage to the passenger vehicle. However, depending on the specifics of the collision, the resulting crash pulse may be extended, and the vehicle accelerations correspondingly low. Research regarding the impact environment and resulting injury potential of the occupants during these types of impacts is limited. Five full-scale crash tests utilizing a tractor-semitrailer and a passenger car were conducted to explore vehicle responses during these types of collisions for both the passenger car and the tractor-trailer. The test vehicles included a loaded van semitrailer pulled by a tractor and three identical mid-sized sedans. Instrumentation on the sedans included accelerometers and rotational rate sensors, and the vehicle and occupant kinematics were recorded using onboard and off-board real-time and high-speed video cameras.

Low-speed sideswipe collisions between tractor-semitrailers and passenger vehicles may result in large areas of visible damage to the passenger vehicle. However, due to the extended contact that occurs during these impacts, it is typical in these incidents for the crash pulse duration to be long and the vehicle accelerations to be correspondingly low. Research regarding the impact environment and resulting injury potential of the occupants during these types of impacts is limited. Five full-scale crash tests utilizing a tractor-semitrailer and a passenger car were conducted to explore the occupant responses during these types of collisions. The test vehicles included a van semitrailer pulled by a tractor and three identical mid-sized sedans. The occupants of the sedans included an instrumented Hybrid III 5th -percentile-male anthropomorphic test device (ATD) in the driver's seat and an un-instrumented Hybrid III 5th -percentile-female ATD in the left rear seat.
