Evaluation of the Injury Risks of Truck Occupants Involved in a Crash as a Result of Errant Truck Platoons

Abstract Truck platooning comprises a number of trucks equipped with automated lateral and longitudinal vehicle control technology, which allows them to move in tight formation with short following distances. This study is an initial step toward developing an understanding of the occupant injury risks associated with the multiple sequential impacts between truck platoons and roadside safety barriers, regardless of whether the crash is associated with a malfunction of automated control or human operation. Full-scale crash impacts of a tractor-trailer platoon into a concrete bridge guardrail were simulated for a specific Test Level condition according to the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) standards. The model of the bridge barrier was developed based on its drawings, and material properties were assigned according to literature data.

Hewing Out Evacuation Routes for Burning Buses by Linear-Shaped Charge Jet

Abstract In recent years, several buses have ignited in some cities in China, causing numerous deaths and significant property damage. However, few research studies have been conducted to deal with such accidents. Therefore, in this work, a linear-shaped charge jet with rectangular cross sections was used to hew out evacuation routes for burning buses, and the parameter design for the shaped charge jet was improved according to asymmetry limitations and human tolerance. A numerical finite element simulation model of the behavior of a jet penetrating the jambs was established using ANSYS/LS-DYNA software. The asymmetrical characteristics of an arc segment in the structure of a rectangular-shaped charge were analyzed, in addition to the influence on the deviations of the jet penetration capacity and blast injuries to occupants caused by the side effects of detonation.

Stability Analysis of Combined Braking System of Tractor-Semitrailer Based on Phase-Plane Method

Abstract An analysis method for the stability of combined braking system of tractor-semitrailer based on phase-plane is investigated. Based on a 9 degree of freedom model, considering longitudinal load transfer, nonlinear model of tire and other factors, the braking stability of tractor-semitrailer is analyzed graphically on the phase plane. The stability of both tractor and semitrailer with different retarder gear is validated with the energy plane, β plane, yaw angle plane and hinged angle plane. The result indicates that in the long downhill with curve condition, both tractor and semitrailer show good stability when retarder is working at 1st and 2nd gear, and when it is at 3rd gear, the tractor is close to be unstable while semitrailer is unstable already. Besides, tractor and semitrailer both lose stability when retarder is working at the 4th gear.

Full Field Non-Contact Investigation of Deformation Fields in Fillet and Plug Welds

Fillet and plug weld are commonly used in structural applications in commercial heavy vehicles. This paper is primarily concerned with an investigation of the full field deformations fields in fillet and plug welds using three dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC). Two identical vehicle parts are constructed using a fillet weld for one specimen, and a plug weld for the other. The specimens are loaded under quasi-static conditions with simultaneous measurement of load, displacements and strain gage measurements. Strain gage locations are selected based on the results of a finite element analysis model. 3D-DIC measurements are constructed using a two camera setup. Thus, 3D-DIC measurements are compared to strain gage measurements and finite element predictions. The effectiveness of the non-contact full field method is evaluated for application to studying the weld details considered and potential for fatigue damage and durability.

Durability and Reliability Test Planning and Test Data Analysis

Durability/reliability design of products, such as auto exhaust systems, is essentially based on the observation of test data and the accurate interpretation of these data. Therefore, test planning and related data analysis are critical to successful engineering designs. To facilitate engineering applications, testing and data analysis methods have been standardized over the last decades by several standard bodies such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). However, over the last few years, several effective testing and data analysis methods have been developed, and the existing standard procedures need to be updated to incorporate the new observations, knowledge, and consensus. In this paper, the common practices and the standard test planning and data analysis procedures are reviewed first. Subsequently, the recent development in accelerated testing, equilibrium based data fitting, design curve construction, and Bayesian statistical data analysis is presented.

Sample Size Reduction Based on Historical Design Information and Bayesian Statistics

Numerous test data have been generated in many testing institutions over the years and the historical information from previous similar designs and operating conditions can shed light on the current and future designs since they would share some common features when the changes are not drastic. To effectively utilize the historical information for current and future designs, two steps are necessary: (1) finding an approach to consistently correlate the test data; (2) utilizing Bayesian statistics, which can provide a rigorous mathematical tool for extracting useful information from the historical data. In this paper, a procedure for test sample size reduction is proposed based on historical fatigue S-N test data and Bayesian statistics. First, the statistical information is extracted from a large amount of fatigue test data collected over the years.

A Statistical Characterization of School Bus Drive Cycles Collected via Onboard Logging Systems

In an effort to characterize the dynamics typical of school bus operation, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) researchers set out to gather in-use duty cycle data from school bus fleets operating across the country. Employing a combination of Isaac Instruments GPS/CAN data loggers in conjunction with existing onboard telemetric systems resulted in the capture of operating information for more than 200 individual vehicles in three geographically unique domestic locations. In total, over 1,500 individual operational route shifts from Washington, New York, and Colorado were collected. Upon completing the collection of in-use field data using either NREL-installed data acquisition devices or existing onboard telemetry systems, large-scale duty-cycle statistical analyses were performed to examine underlying vehicle dynamics trends within the data and to explore vehicle operation variations between fleet locations.

Finite Element Analysis of Composite Over-wrapped Pressure Vessels for Hydrogen Storage

This paper presents 3D finite element analysis performed for a composite cylindrical tank made of 6061-aluminum liner overwrapped with carbon fibers subjected to a burst internal pressure of 1610 bars. As the service pressure expected in these tanks is 700 bars, a factor of safety of 2.3 is kept the same for all designs. The optimal design configuration of such high pressure storage tanks includes an inner liner used as a gas permeation barrier, geometrically optimized domes, inlet/outlet valves with minimum stress concentrations, and directionally tailored exterior reinforcement for high strength and stiffness. Filament winding of pressure vessels made of fiber composite materials is the most efficient manufacturing method for such high pressure hydrogen storage tanks. The complexity of the filament winding process in the dome region is characterized by continually changing the fiber orientation angle and the local thickness of the wall.

Chassis Dynamometer as a Development Platform for Vehicle Hardware In-the-Loop “VHiL”

This manuscript provides a review of different types and categorization of the chassis dynamometer systems. The review classifies the chassis dynamometers based on the configuration, type of rollers and the application type. Additionally the manuscript discusses several application examples of the chassis dynamometer including: performance and endurance mileage accumulation tests, fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions, noise, vibration and harshness testing (NVH). Different types of the vehicle attachment system in the dynamometer cell and its influences on the driving force characteristics and the vehicle acoustic signature is also discussed. The text also highlights the impact of the use of the chassis dynamometer as a development platform and its impact on the development process. Examples of using chassis dynamometer as a development platform using Vehicle Hardware In-the-Loop (VHiL) approach including drivability assessment and transmission calibrations are presented.

Correlation Measures and Their Applications in Structural Dynamics and Data Analyses

This paper reviews the correlation concepts and tools available, with the emphasis on their historical origins, mathematical properties and applications. Two of the most commonly used statistical correlation indicators, i.e., modal assurance criterion (MAC) for structural deformation pattern identification/correlation and the coefficient of determination (R2) for data correlation are investigated. The mathematical structure of R2 is critically examined, and the physical meanings and their implications are discussed. Based on the insights gained from these analyses, a data scatter measure and a dependency measure are proposed. The applications of the measures for both linear and nonlinear data are also discussed. Finally, several worked examples in vehicle dynamics analysis and statistical data analyses are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of these concepts.

Influence of Gear Geometry on Gearbox Noise Reduction - An Experimental Investigation

The present competitive market scenario and customer requirements demand for improved NVH quality and to meet statutory norms without increased cost. When gears are used for power transmission, gear noise is of particular concern. The noise may be created due to harmonics of the rotating and meshing internal components. This has a significant effect on the overall vehicle sound quality. Various factors contribute to gearbox noise. Some of them include shaft misalignments, gear geometry, lubrication, bearings and loose mountings. Hence it is essential to study which factors contribute to the gearbox noise and to develop countermeasures for the same. Although a number of factors may contribute to gear noise as mentioned, the scope of this paper is limited to the effect of gear geometry alone on the gearbox noise.

Exhaust noise and note are key factors when deciding which high-performance vehicle to buy. Cadence and tone of the exhaust can determine whether a customer is willing to make a purchase. To make sure the exhaust note is desirable, manufacturers must make several prototypes with each subjected to extensive testing, tuning, and customer surveying. This process can be expensive and time consuming. However, even after such processes, the final design may not be well received by consumers. Utilizing computer aided engineering (CAE), specifically computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can provide a financially viable and technically sound solution to this issue. Recent developments in CAE software have allowed for capturing the effects of aeroacoustics in exhaust systems and reproducing the acoustic signatures as well as a physical exhaust note.

Medium and High-Frequency Vibration Analysis of Thin Plates by a Hybrid Distributed Transfer Function Method

Vibrations of plates are widely seen in various applications of automobile, aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering. Vibration analysis of plates in medium and high-frequency regions plays an important role in optimal design and safe operation of machines and structures in these applications. Medium and high-frequency vibration analysis of plates is usually performed by using numerical methods. Proposed in this paper is a new analytical solution method for mid- and high-frequency analysis of thin rectangular plates modeled by the Kirchhoff-Love plate theory. In the development, analytical solutions for a class of thin plates are obtained based on a hybrid formulation that combines the Distributed Transfer Function Method (DTFM) and modal expansion. The proposed method, which is an extension of the DTFM for one-dimensional continua, is called the hybrid Distributed Transfer Function Method (hybrid DTFM).

Inverse Reconstruction of the Spatial Distribution of Dynamic Tire-Road Contact Forces in Time Domain Using Impulse Response Matrix Deconvolution for Different Measurement Types

In tire development, the dynamic tire-road contact forces are an important indicator to assess structure-borne interior cabin noise. This type of noise is the dominant source in the frequency range from 50-450 Hz, especially when rolling with constant angular velocity on a rough road. The spatial force distribution is difficult or sometimes even impossible to simulate or measure in practice. So, the use of an inverse technique is proposed. This technique uses response measurements in combination with a digital twin simulation model to obtain the input forces in an inverse way. The responses and model properties are expressed in the time domain, since it is specifically aimed to trace back the impact locations from road surface texture indents on the tire. In order to do so, the transient responses of the travelling waves as a result of these impacts is used. The framework expresses responses as a convolution product of the unknown loads and impulse response measurements.

Prediction and Validation of Cab Noise in Agricultural Equipment

To improve overall customer experience, it is imperative to minimize the noise levels inside agricultural equipment cab. Up-front prediction of acoustic performance in product development is critical to implement the noise control strategies optimally. This paper discusses the methodology used for virtual modeling of a cab on agricultural equipment for prediction of interior noise. The Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) approach is suitable to predict high frequency interior noise and sound quality parameters such as articulation index and loudness. The cab SEA model is developed using a commercial software. The structural and acoustic excitations are measured through physical testing in various operating conditions. The interior noise levels predicted by the virtual model are compared with the operator ear noise levels measured in the test unit. The resultant SPL spectrum from SEA correlates well with the test.

Other trends in commercial vehicle segment such as engine downsizing, weight, cost reduction and meeting stringent emission norms have influenced vehicle design dynamics. These parameters are critical and often contribute to vehicle NVH issues. Considering these new trends in commercial vehicle segment, it becomes challenging for an NVH engineer to provide optimized solutions. NVH issues could be related to the various subsystems such as driveline, axle, transmission steering wheel etc. in the vehicle and its resonant frequencies.
