This SAE Metric Aerospace Standard (MA) provides dimensional, performance, testing and other requirements for high strength, thin wall, double head box and combination wrenches which possess an internal wrenching design so configured that, when mated with hexagon (6 point) fasteners, they shall transmit torque to the fastener without bearing on the apex of the fastener's wrenching points. This standard provides additional requirements beyond ANSI B107.9 appropriate for aerospace use. Inclusion of dimensional data in this document is not intended to imply all of the products described therein are stock production sizes. Consumers are requested to consult with manufacturers concerning lists of stock production sizes.
This standard covers the design, performance, and test requirements for high strength, thin wall, commercial sockets, universal sockets, and box wrenches used for the attachment and detachment of metric spline drive, high strength, and high temperature aircraft fasteners. Inclusion of dimensional data in this standard is not intended to imply that all of the products described herein are stock production sizes. Consumers are requested to consult with manufacturers concerning lists of stock production sizes. This standard is based on, but not limited to, the following external spline wrenching system:
This study addresses the adequacy of sockets, wrenches, and torque adapters conforming to AS954 to wrench 12 point fasteners with wrenching configurations conforming to AS870C. Reported wrenching problems with smaller sizes are investigated through examining the combined tolerances on the fasteners and wrenches, conducting torque testing on typical high strength lock nuts. Possible solutions to correct these wrenching problems are presented.
This SAE Aerospace Standard covers high strength commercial sockets and universal sockets which possess the strength, clearances, and internal wrenching design so configured that, when mated with hexagon (6 point) fasteners, they shall transmit torque to the fastener without bearing on the outer 5% of the fastener’s wrenching points. This document provides additional requirements beyond ANSI B107.5 appropriate for aerospace use. Inclusion of dimensional data in this document is not intended to imply all of the products described therein are stock production sizes. Consumers are requested to consult with manufacturers concerning lists of stock production sizes.
This recommended practice covers the dimensions of an inside splined driver-wrench adapter, envelope of the housing-wrench reaction, the mechanical method of adapting the driver-wrench adapter to the wrench adapter driven end, and the housing-wrench reaction to the holder-counter torque.
This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) covers high strength thin wall ratcheting box wrenches which possess the strength, clearances, and internal wrenching design so configured that, when mated with bihexagonal (12 point) fasteners conforming to the requirement of AS870 for inch sizes and ISO 4095 for metric sizes, they shall transmit torque to the fastener without bearing on the outer 5% of the fastener’s wrenching points. Inclusion of dimensional data in this document is not intended to imply that all products described herein are stock production sizes. Consumers are requested to consult with manufacturers concerning lists of stock production sizes. The dimensional limits of box and combination wrench lengths have been established to provide configuration control for tool storage applications.
This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) covers open box end flare nut wrenches. These wrenches are designed for nondistorting usage by transmitting torque to tube fittings without bearing on the apex of the fitting wrenching surfaces.
This SAE Metric Aerospace Standard (MA) covers metric double end flare nut wrenches that are designed with the following requirements: a Non-distorting usage. b Possessing the strength, clearances, and internal wrenching design to be used on hydraulic tube fittings that conform to the requirements of SAE J514. c Transmitting torque to tube fittings without bearing on the apex of fitting wrenching points. Inclusion of dimensional data in this document is not intended to imply that all of the products described herein are stock production sizes. Consumers are requested to consult with manufacturers concerning lists of stock production sizes.
This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) covers handles and attachments for use with sockets and crowfoot wrenches in aerospace applications involving high torque, limited clearances, and generally clean conditions. This document provides additional requirements beyond ANSI B107.10M appropriate for aerospace use. The use of adapters, either enlarging or reducing, for turning high-strength fasteners is an unsafe practice. Adapters are not included in this document. The listing of tools in this document does not insure that they are available commercially.
This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) covers high strength thin wall commercial sockets, flexible sockets, box wrenches and torque adaptors which possess the strength, clearances, and internal wrenching design so configured that, when mated with 12-point fasteners conforming to the requirement of AS 870, they shall transmit torque to the fastener without bearing on the outer 5% of the fastener's wrenching points.
This Aerospace Standard (AS) covers reversible ratchet handles and high strength thin wall commercial sockets, flexible sockets, box wrenches and torque adapters designed for general usage which possess the strength, clearances, and internal wrenching design so configured that, when mated with 12-point fasteners conforming to the requirement of AS 870, they shall transmit torque to the fastener without bearing on the outer 5% of the fastener's wrenching points.
