Toyota's New Six-Speed Automatic Transmission AB60E for RWD Vehicles

Toyota Motor Corporation has developed a new six-speed automatic transmission AB60E for longitudinal front engine rear wheel drive (RWD) vehicles. This transmission development was aimed at an improvement of power performance and fuel economy, while achieving a lightweight, compact package and a high torque capacity. In order to achieve this target, a high-capacity ultra-flat torque converter, a highly-rigid transmission case, and an ATF warmer with a valve to switch ATF circuits to an air-cooled ATF cooler have been newly developed. Moreover, a new transmission mode control logic “TOW / HAUL” has been developed to improve power performance and driveability during trailer towing. This automatic transmission has adopted the same gear train and hydraulic control system as the conventional six-speed automatic transmission A760E. This paper describes the structure, major features and performance of the transmission in detail.

Toyota Motor Corporation has recently developed a new six-speed automatic transmission (A761E) for Front Engine Rear Wheel Drive (FR) vehicles. Following the general trend of increased shift stages and a wider range of gear ratios, this six-speed automatic transmission has been developed with attention paid to the gear steps and a wider range of gear ratios. By balanced selection of close-ratio gears in a wider range, the change greatly improves the power performance and fuel economy of the vehicle. To further improve fuel economy we have adopted new technologies such as low-viscosity ATF, neutral control, and deceleration control by extending the fuel cut range (reset speed). We have also adopted a flat-shaped torque converter, small solenoids, an aluminum oil pump cover, etc. to realize the lightest six-speed automatic transmission in the world.

Toyota Motor Corporation has developed a new five-speed automatic transmission (A750E/A750F) for longitudinal front engine rear wheel drive (RWD) vehicles. The development of this transmission has been aimed at improving fuel economy and power performance, achieving the world's top-level weight and compactness, while maintaining high torque capacity. In order to achieve this purpose, the gear train, torque converter, and other components are completely changed, and advanced technology has been applied. Aisin AW (AW) and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) have developed a new RWD 6 speed automatic transmission, AWR6B45(AC60), suitable for SUV’s and LDT’s in the worldwide market, not only for North America but also for other countries including emerging nations. This 6 speed automatic transmission has achieved low cost, equivalent to AW and TMCs’ current 5 speed automatic transmission, while realizing improvement in both fuel economy and driving performance against current in-house 5-speed automatic transmissions, in addition to satisfying both toughness against various usage and light weight/compactness. They are accomplished by using a compact gear train structure, the latest efficiency improvement technologies, and a high-response, compact hydraulic control system. In addition, the compactness of this 6 speed automatic transmission enables it to replace current 4 speed and 5 speed automatic transmissions for various engine applications.

For viscous couplings(VCs) as a driving force transmission system of vehicles, requirement of torque characteristics has been getting very stringent. Because the torque characteristics significantly affect four wheel drive vehicles' abilities such as traction performance and driving stability. Furthermore, the recent concerns on high fuel economy, low pollution and low cost require that design of VCs should be increasingly compact, light weighted and excellent in transmitted torque's stability. It is an easy way to increase viscosity of viscous coupling fluids(VCFs) for the compact design of the VC. But it might cause increase in heat load and wear of plates which resulted in degradation of the VCF. The degradation affects VCF's viscosity and impairs stability in torque transmission. Therefore it is indispensable to develop high viscosity VCF which is excellent in long-term viscosity's stability.

Aisin AW (AW) and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) have developed a new rear wheel drive (RWD) 10-speed automatic transmission, AWR10L65 (TMC name: AGA0), suitable for RWD/AWD luxury passenger cars and sports cars. This 10-speed automatic transmission provides enhanced drivability leading to outstanding driver satisfaction. This has been accomplished using a close ratio gear train with optimized gear steps for rhythmic shift changes and quick acceleration. Low rpm lock-up and highly responsive shift changes result in a direct shift feel. This automatic transmission contributes to improved fuel economy by having higher efficiency and lower mass than current 8-speed RWD automatic transmissions.

AISIN AW has developed a five-speed automatic transmission “55-50SN” for front wheel drive (FWD) vehicles. This new 55-50SN has been developed with a concept to minimize length and mass increase compared with the current four-speed automatic transmission, and is one of the most compact five-speed automatic transmissions in the world. This has been accomplished by newly developed planetary gear sets, a new differential, and a new squeezed torque converter. In addition, the control system is made by a unique design to maintain the excellent compactness and to achieve a high quality smooth shift feeling. Recently, electric-powered vehicle such as HV, PHV, EV and FCV has been highly demanded and getting attention due to the increase of environmental-consciousness. Also, environmental regulations are getting more and more strict in many countries and regions. Then, environmental friendly vehicle is needed to be spread more and more than ever. As it is found in “TOYOTA Environmental challenge 2050”, Toyota will rapidly increase the number of new car sales of electric-powered vehicle towards 2050. This paper covers the rear wheel drive Q710 electric drive transaxle for 2nd generation MIRAI FCV. Toyota developed the transaxle for FCV (rear mounted) and for EV (front mounted) simultaneously and achieved coexistence of vehicle mountability and commonization of majority of the parts. This paper describes the hardware feature and the detailed technology which was adopted to Q710.

Increasingly stringent environmental regulations requiring lower CO2 emissions and higher fuel economy have made it essential to develop vehicles with superior fuel efficiency and cleaner emissions. At the same time, there is growing demand for even more powerful and quieter vehicles. To help satisfy these requirements, Toyota Motor Corporation has developed a new 8-speed automatic transmission for front wheel drive vehicles, incorporating its first compact torque converter with a multiple disk lock-up mechanism. This newly developed compact torque converter with a multiple disk lock-up mechanism was designed under the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) development concept to achieve an excellent balance between higher efficiency through the commonization of components and stronger product appeal through installation on a whole family of transmissions. This compact torque converter is compatible with a variety of engines from inline 4-cylinder to V6 configurations.

We have developed an electric rear-drive unit to enable all-wheel drive (AWD) applications to the compact FF hybrid passenger vehicles. The development is intended to provide a compact and low cost unit with low fuel consumption. The unit newly introduces a two-axis gear train that enables a compact design, an induction motor and an ATF (automatic transmission fluid) stirring resistance restraining structure that contribute to lower fuel consumption. This paper presents the features and performance of the electric rear-drive unit.

Development of 2nd-Generation Solar Charging System and Generating Performance in the USA

In response to the steadily worsening impact of global warming, greater efforts are being made to achieve carbon neutrality. Toyota Motor Corporation developed an in-vehicle solar charging system that utilizes generated solar energy to drive the vehicle. While the ignition is off, energy generated from a solar panel is used to charge the main battery. Then, while the ignition is on, this energy is supplied to the 12 V system to reduce consumption of the main battery energy, thereby helping to improve the electric driving range. This 1st-generation solar charging system adopted in the Prius PHV in 2017 was the first mass-produced in-vehicle solar charging system in the world. In 2022, the 2nd-generation solar charging system was developed and adopted in the bZ4X, including performance improvements such as a newly designed solar roof and lightweight charging system.

Driveshafts are composed of a transmission side joint, wheel side joint, and shaft which connect the two joints. The Rzeppa type constant velocity joint (CVJ) is usually selected as the wheel side joint of a drive shaft for front wheel drive automobiles. Due to recent needs of fuel efficiency and lighter weight for vehicles, it is necessary to reduce the joint size and improve the efficiency of a CVJ. In order to reduce the weight, solving tribology details for long life under high contact pressure is an important issue for developing a CVJ. It is difficult to understand the characteristics of a contact surface, such as relative slip velocity or spin behavior, because the outer race, inner race, cage, and balls, act complicatedly and exchange loads at many points. Meanwhile, after joint endurance tests, ball spalling marks at pole of the ball are sometimes observed.

Aisin AW has developed a new lightweight, compact automatic transmission: the 60-40LE. The 60-40LE is designed for small cars of up to 1.6L engine displacement. The transmission is an electronically controlled, 4-speed, front wheel drive transaxle utilizing a unique, compact planetary gear train. This new planetary gear train, combining a dual planetary gearset, establishes the shortest shaft length of its kind. The electronic control system allows for improved shift quality. Application of a linear solenoid allows for optimum control, especially during 2nd to 3rd gear shifting and shifting without the application of a one-way clutch.
