Thermal Optimization of the ECS on an Advanced Aircraft with an Emphasis on System Efficiency and Design Methodology

Two methods for analyzing and evaluating the environmental control system on an advanced aircraft as described in this paper include the conventional first law energy conservation technique and the second law entropy generation minimization technique. Simplified analytical models of the ECS are developed for each method and compared to determine the validity of using the latter to facilitate the design process in optimizing the overall system for a minimum gross takeoff weight (GTW). Preliminary results have illustrated the importance of taking into account system optimization based on system (or component) efficiency. For instance, even though different values were obtained for the rate of entropy generation, the second law analysis of a shell-in-tube heat exchanger led to an optimum tube diameter of 0.12 in (3.05 mm) when both R-12 and R-114 were used as the refrigerant in the vapor cycle.

The automotive industry is dramatically changing. Many automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) proposed new prototype models or concept vehicles to promote a green vehicle image. Non-traditional players bring many latest technologies in the Information Technology (IT) industry to the automotive industry. Typical vehicle’s characteristics became wider compared to those of vehicles a decade ago, and they include not only a driving range, mileage per gallon and acceleration rating, but also many features adopted in the IT industry, such as usability, connectivity, vehicle software upgrade capability and backward compatibility. Consumers expect the latest technology features in vehicles as they enjoy in using digital applications in laptops and mobile phones. These features create a huge challenge for a design of a new vehicle, especially for a human-machine-interface (HMI) system.

Rapid Prototyping of Control Strategies for Embedded Systems

As both the number and complexity of electronic control system applications on earthmoving equipment and on-highway trucks increase, so does the effort associated with developing and maintaining control strategies implemented in embedded systems. A new tool was recently introduced by Sigma Technology of Ann Arbor, Michigan, that provides the capability to perform rapid prototyping of production embedded systems. The rapid prototyping process includes system modeling, control algorithm synthesis, simulation analysis, source code generation and vehicle implementation. The results of incorporating this tool in the control system design process include improved control performance, improved system reliability/robustness, and significantly reduced development/maintenance costs.

Exploration of Discrete Element Method to Dynamically Model Sandy Terrain

This research examines a Discrete Element Method (DEM) for modeling the behavior of sand under various loading conditions as a critical first step in developing computational tools to aid in designing new sand-tire interaction systems for improved traction and mobility. Sand as a material is challenging to model computationally due to its unusual behavior: sometimes resembling a fluid and sometimes behaving more like a solid, yet never exactly replicating either. This behavior arises from the particulate nature of sand which, in contrast to the systems typically modeled in continuum mechanics, is not readily represented by continuum models. In sand, elements (i.e. particles) do not have permanent associations with neighboring elements as they do in most continua, but rather are free to migrate anywhere in the domain according to their interactions with other elements.

Electronics technology has evolved significantly since the first electronically controlled heavy duty on-highway truck engines were introduced in the mid 1980's. Engine control hardware, software, and sensor designs have been driven by many factors. Emissions regulations, fuel economy, engine performance, operator features, fleet management information, diagnostics, vehicle integration, reliability, and new electronics technology are some of those factors. The latest engine electronics technology is not only found in heavy duty on-highway trucks, but in off-highway applications as well. Track-type tractors, haul trucks, wheel loaders, and agricultural tractors now benefit from the advantages of electronic engines. And, many more new applications are being developed.

Component-Level Characterization for Vehicle-Level Electromagnetic Simulations

With the proliferation of high-speed electronics and wireless devices in today's automobiles, full-vehicle electromagnetic simulations are becoming an important part of the automotive design process. Full-vehicle simulations require complete and accurate models for the various electronic components found in the vehicle. Although automotive electronic components are currently subjected to a variety of electromagnetic measurements designed to ensure electromagnetic compatibility, existing measurement procedures do not yield sufficient information about the electromagnetic behavior of components to be useful in full-vehicle simulations. This paper outlines a set of tests designed to characterize automotive components as electromagnetic sources. Source models derived from these tests can be used in vehicle-level electromagnetic simulations. These simulations can then be used to help determine the best design and placement of wireless devices and other electronic components in the vehicle.

These properties present great potential for part integration, which results in lower manufacturing costs and faster time to market. Composites also have a high level of styling flexibility in terms of deep drawn panel, which goes beyond what can be achieved with metal stampings. The so-called multifunctional or smart composites provide significant benefits to the vehicles as compared to the traditional materials that only have monotonic properties.
