Self-Tuning PID Design for Slip Control of Wedge Clutches

The wedge clutch takes advantages of small actuation force/torque, space-saving and energy-saving. However, big challenge arises from the varying self-reinforced ratio due to the varying friction coefficient inevitably affected by temperature and wear. In order to improve the smoothness and synchronization time of the slipping process of the wedge clutch, this paper proposes a self-tuning PID controller based on Lyapunov principle. A new Lyapunov function is developed for the wedge clutch system. Simulation results show that the self-tuning PID obtains much less error than the conventional PID with fixed gains. Moreover, the self-tuning PID is more adaptable to the variation of the friction coefficient for the error is about 1/5 of the conventional PID.

Modeling of a Wedge Clutch in an Automatic Transmission

A wedge clutch with a wedge ramp transfers the tangential force to an axial force. It has unique features of self-reinforcement and small actuation force, and can be packaged into tight spaces. This wedge clutch can be developed to apply to an automatic transmission (AT) or a hybrid transmission. This paper focuses on the simulation of one wedge clutch in AT during shifting. A mathematical formula is given to describe the self-reinforcement principle of the wedge. The dynamic model of a motor actuated wedge clutch during shifting is built to simulate and develop the control algorithm. The model is implemented in Matlab/Simulink, which includes a DC motor model, a dynamic model of the wedge mechanism and clutch pack, and a driveline model of AT which can simulate a gear shift process. The key characteristics such as variation of normal pressure, response time and energy consumption are evaluated, and the results show a favorable comparison with the traditional hydraulic clutch.

General Motors Hydra-Matic 9T50 Automatic Transaxle

General Motors Global Propulsion Systems’ first nine-speed automatic transmission makes its debut in the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu, advancing a legacy of multispeed transmissions designed to optimize efficiency, performance and refinement. The Hydra-Matic 9T50 nine-speed is paired with a Ecotech 2.0L Turbo engine in the Malibu, contributing to an EPA estimated 33 mpg highway, a three-percent increase over the 2016 Malibu with an eight-speed automatic paired to the same engine. The 9T50 has a wider 7.6:1 overall ratio, which is the ratio between the first gear ratio and the top gear ratio, - compared to the six-speed’s 6.0:1 ratio. The 9T50 is fitted with a “deep” 4.69 first gear ratio for excellent off-the-line acceleration and a “tall” 0.62 top gear ratio for low-rpm highway cruising. That balance optimizes acceleration and fuel economy while reducing engine noise during cruising.

Dynamic Characterization of a Twin Plate Torque Converter Clutch During Controlled Slip

This paper details testing for torque converter clutch (TCC) characterization during steady state and dynamic operation under controlled slip conditions on a dynamometer setup. The subject torque converter under test is a twin plate clutch with a dual stage turbine damper without a centrifugal pendulum absorber. An overview is provided of the dynamometer setup, hydraulic system and control techniques for regulating the apply pressure to the torque converter and clutch. To quantify the performance of the clutch in terms of control stability, pressure to torque relationship and the dynamic behavior during apply and release, a matrix of oil temperatures, output speeds, input torques, and clutch apply pressures were imposed upon the torque converter.

While the basic working principle and the mechanical construction of automatic transmissions has not changed significantly, increased requirements for performance, fuel economy, and drivability, as well as the increasing number of gears has made it more challenging to design the systems that control modern automatic transmissions. New types of transmissions—continuously variable transmissions (CVT), dual clutch transmissions (DCT), and hybrid powertrains—have presented added challenges. Gear shifting in today’s automatic transmissions is a dynamic process that involves synchronized torque transfer from one clutch to another, smooth engine speed change, engine torque management, and minimization of output torque disturbance. Dynamic analysis helps to understand gear shifting mechanics and supports creation of the best design for gear shift control systems in passenger cars, trucks, buses, and commercial vehicles.

Development of a Low Loss Clutch for CVT Reverse Function

Continuously variable transmissions (CVT) provide superior fuel economy by enabling internal combustion engines to operate at their “sweet spots”. However, there is still potential to improve CVT system’s mechanical efficiency, and further enhance vehicle-level fuel economy. In the past, extensive research work has focused on the core continuously variator unit (CVU) that includes pulleys and a belt or chain. Another thread of research has centered on optimization of CVT clamping force control to reduce hydraulic system loss. Nonetheless, to the best of our knowledge, very little research has looked into the planetary gear sets and clutches that enable the CVT system to switch between forward, neutral and reverse gears. The state-of-the-art reverse clutch usually consists of multiple friction and steel plates, and is normally open during all forward driving maneuvers. The relative speed between friction and steel plates is identical to turbine speed, which generate spin loss.

A Parametric Sensitivity Study of Predicted Transient Abuse Loads for Sizing Electric Drive-Unit and Driveline Components

The design and development of electric vehicles involves many unique challenges. One such challenge involves accurately predicting driveline abuse torque loads early in the design cycle to aid with sizing drive-unit and driveline components. Since electrified drivelines typically lack a torque-limiting “fuse” element such as a torque converter or slipping clutch, they can be vulnerable to sudden transient events involving high wheel acceleration or deceleration. Component sizing must account for the loads caused by such events, and these loads must be accurately quantified early on when vehicle parameters haven’t been finalized yet. Early load predictions can be made by completing abuse maneuver simulations where key parameters are varied to gauge their influence on simulated loads. Understanding how these parameters impact loads allows for better risk assessment during the design process, as these parameters will inevitably change until a final design is iterated upon.

A New Rotating Wedge Clutch Actuation System

Rotating clutches play an important role in automatic transmissions (AT), dual-clutch transmissions (DCT) and hybrid transmissions. It is very important to continually improve the transmission systems in the areas such as simplifying actuator designs, reducing cost and increasing controllability. A new concept of electrical motor driven actuation using a wedge mechanism, a wedge clutch, demonstrates potential benefits. This wedge clutch has the characteristics of good mechanical advantage, self-reinforcement, and faster and more precise controllability using electrical motor. In this paper, a new rotating wedge clutch is proposed. It presents a challenge since the motor actuator has to be stationary while the clutch piston is rotating. A new mechanism to connect the motor to the wedge piston, including dual-plane bearings and two mechanical ramp linkages, is studied. The design and verification of the physical structure of the actuator are discussed in detail in the paper.

A New Clutch Actuation System for Dry DCT

Dry dual clutch transmission (DCT) has played an important role in the high performance applications as well as low-cost market sectors in Asia, with a potential as the future mainstream transmission technology due to its high mechanical efficiency and driving comfort. Control system simplification and cost reduction has been critical in making dry DCT more competitive against other transmission technologies. Specifically, DCT clutch actuation system is a key component with a great potential for cost-saving as well as performance improvement. In this paper, a new motor driven clutch actuator with a force-aid lever has been proposed. A spring is added to assist clutch apply that can effectively reduce the motor size and energy consumption. The goal of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of this new clutch actuator, and the force-aid lever actuator's principle, physical structure design, and validation results are discussed in details.
