Unique Needs of Motorcycle and Scooter Lubricants and Proposed Solutions for More Effective Performance Evaluation

The operating conditions of a typical motorcycle are considerably different than those of a typical passenger car and thus require an oil capable of handling the unique demands. One primary difference, wet clutch lubrication, is already addressed by the current JASO four-stroke motorcycle engine oil specification (JASO T 903:2011). Another challenge for the oil is gear box lubrication, which may be addressed in part with the addition of a gear protection test in a future revision to the JASO specification. A third major difference between a motorcycle oil and passenger car oil is the more severe conditions an oil is subjected to within a motorcycle engine, due to higher temperatures, engine speeds and power densities. Scooters, utilizing a transmission not lubricated by the crankcase oil, also place higher demands on an engine oil, once again due to higher temperatures, engine speeds and power densities.

Theoretical and Practical Aspects of Balancing a V-8 Engine Crankshaft

Crankshafts must be balanced statically and dynamically before being put into service. However, without pistons and connecting-rod assemblies, a non-symmetric crankshaft is not in dynamic balance. Therefore, it is necessary to apply equivalent ring-weights on each of the crankpins of the crankshaft when balancing it on a dynamic balancing machine. The value of the ring weight must be accurately determined, otherwise all advantages that are derived from balancing would be of no avail. This paper analytically examines the theoretical background of this problem. Formulas for calculating the ring weights are derived and presented. These formulas are applicable to a generic class of crankshafts of V-type engines with piston pin offset. Also, practical consideration, such as the design and manufacturing of these ring weights, the method of testing, and correction is addressed.

Testing Elastomers - Can Correlation Be Achieved Between Machines, Load Cells, Fixtures and Operators?

At present, testing elastomeric parts is performed at a level dictated by the users of the testing equipment. No society or testing group has defined a formal standard of testing or a way to calibrate a testing machine. This is in part due to the difficulty involved with testing a material whose properties are in a constant state of flux. To further complicate this issue, testing equipment, testing procedures, fixtures, and a host of other variables including the operators themselves, all can have an impact on the characterization of elastomers. The work presented in this paper looks at identifying some of the variables of testing between machines, load cells, fixtures and operators. It also shows that correlation can be achieved and should be performed between companies to ensure data integrity.

Test Methodology to Reduce Axle Whine in a 4WD Vehicle

With the ever increasing popularity of SUV automobiles, studies involving driveline specific problems have grown. One prevalent NVH problem is axle whine associated with the assembled motion transmission error (MTE) of an axle system and the corresponding vibration/acoustic transfer paths into the vehicle. This phenomenon can result in objectionable noise levels in the passenger compartment, ensuing in customer complaints. This work explores the methodology and test methods used to diagnose and solve a field axle whine problem, including the use of cab mount motion transmissibility path analysis, running modes and a detailed MTE best-of-the-best (BOB)/worst-of-the-worst (WOW) study. The in-vehicle axle whine baseline measurements including both vehicle dynamometer and on-road test conditions, along with the countermeasures of axle whine fixes are identified and presented in this paper.

Technique for Predicting Powertrain Self-Excited Vibration at Vehicle Start-Up

A clutch FEM model was created to quantitatively understand the operation and dynamic friction characteristics of the facing materials. And a simulation model for dynamic behavior analysis of the torque transmission characteristics from a transmission that incorporates drivetrain damping characteristics to the vehicle body was constructed. The data of the actual vehicle was also measured when vibration occurs and loss torque is generated by friction in the drivetrain, and damping characteristics were determined from the measurement values. In order to confirm the usefulness of this method, the construction of a clutch that suppresses self-excited vibration was examined by simulation and the reduction of vibration in an actual vehicle was confirmed.

Supporting the Transportation Industry: Creating the GC-LB and High-Performance Multiuse (HPM) Grease Certification Programs

This paper outlines the history and background of the NLGI (formerly known as the National Lubricating Grease Institute) lubricating grease specifications, GC-LB classification of Automotive Service Greases as well as details on the development of new requirements for their High-Performance Multiuse (HPM) grease certification program. The performance of commercial lubricating grease formulations through NLGI's Certification Mark using the GC-LB Classification system and the recently introduced HPM grease certification program will be discussed. These certification programs have provided an internationally recognized specification for lubricating grease and automotive manufacturers, users and consumers since 1989. Although originally conceived as a specification for greases for the re-lubrication of automotive chassis and wheel bearings, GC-LB is today recognized as a mark of quality for a variety of different applications.

Study of Reproducibility of Pedal Tracking and Detection Response Task to Assess Driver Distraction

We have developed a bench test method to assess driver distraction caused by the load of using infotainment systems. In a previous study, we found that this method can be used to assess the task loads of both visual-manual tasks and auditory-vocal tasks. The task loads are assessed using the performances of both pedal tracking task (PT) and detection response task (DRT) while performing secondary tasks. We can perform this method using simple equipment such as game pedals and a PC. The aim of this study is to verify the reproducibility of the PT-DRT. Experiments were conducted in three test environments in which test regions, experimenters and participants differed from each other in the US, and the test procedures were almost the same. We set two types of visual-manual tasks and two types of auditory-vocal tasks as secondary tasks and set two difficulties for each task type to vary the level of task load.

Study of High Power Dynamic Charging System

The use of electric vehicles (EV) is becoming more widespread as a response to global warming. The major issues associated with EV are the annoyance represented by charging the vehicles and their limited cruising range. In an attempt to remove the restrictions on the cruising range of EV, the research discussed in this paper developed a dynamic charging EV and low-cost infrastructure that would make it possible for the vehicles to charge by receiving power directly from infrastructure while in motion. Based on considerations of the effect of electromagnetic waves, charging power, and the amount of power able to be supplied by the system, this development focused on a contact-type charging system. The use of a wireless charging system would produce concerns over danger due to the infiltration of foreign matter into the primary and secondary coils and the health effects of leakage flux.

Study of Durability Prediction with Focus on Wear Properties for Multiple Plate Clutches

To increase the durability of multiple-plate clutches used in automatic transmissions, attention was focused on the wear history of the facing material. Measurements have confirmed that correlations can be observed between initial wear and disk contact pressure when the clutch is engaged, and between steady wear and plate temperature. Next, simulation technology was developed to quantify the disk contact pressure and plate temperature. When simulated contact pressure distribution and temperature distribution were used to establish correlations with durability wear, good proportional relationships were found in both cases. It was also found that when clutch specifications and driving conditions were varied, the gradient of the correction also varied, but the correlation remained proportional as long as the same facing material was used. The gradient was ranked as a wear property specific to the facing material.

Step-Stress Accelerated Test Method – A Validation Study

Most products are designed to operate for a long period of time, and in such case, life testing is a relatively lengthy procedure. Lengthy tests tend to be expensive and the results become available too late to be of much use. To reduce the experimental cost significantly and provide an efficient tool to assess the life distribution for highly reliable product, a step-stress accelerated test (SSAT) was developed. An example of a rear suspension aft lateral link is used to validate the SSAT method.

Stamping Effect on Oil Canning and Dent Resistance Performances of an Automotive Roof Panel

The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of stamping process on oil canning and dent resistance performances of an automotive roof panel. Finite element analysis of stamping processes was carried out using LS-Dyna to obtain thickness and plastic strain distributions under various forming conditions. The forming results were mapped onto the roof model by an in-house developed mapping code. A displacement control approach using an implicit FEM code ABAQUS/Standard was employed for oil canning and denting analysis. An Auto/Steel Partnership Standardized Test Procedure for Dent Resistance was employed to establish the analysis model and to determine the dent and oil canning loads. The results indicate that stamping has a positive effect on dent resistance and a negative effect on oil canning performance. As forming strains increase, dent resistance increases while the oil canning load decreases.

Predictive Technique for Forced Vibration in Hybrid Transmission

The subject is technology for damping forced vibration in the multiplate wet clutches used in hybrid vehicle transmissions. As a predictive technique for forced vibration caused by the structure of the clutch, three-dimensional simulation was used in the present study to anticipate the modes of vibration that occur. Next, a one-dimensional simulation was created as a predictive technique for drivetrain torsional vibration from the engine to the driveshaft. The one-dimensional simulation created was used to extract the modes of operation that are severe with regard to forced vibration from target values for vibration anticipated from the vehicle body. The results obtained were used with three-dimensional simulation to change the clutch structure to provide greater latitude with regard to the target for forced vibration.

Oxidation Stability of Automatic Transmission Fluids -A Study by the International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) ATF Subcommittee

The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) ATF subcommittee members have compared the two oxidation bench test methods, Aluminum Beaker Oxidation Test (ABOT) and Indiana Stirring Oxidation Stability Test (ISOT), using a number of factory-fill and service-fill ATFs obtained in Japan and in the US. In many cases, the ATFs were more severely oxidized after the ABOT procedure than after the same duration of the ISOT procedure. The relative severity of these two tests was influenced by the composition of the ATFs. The bench test oxidation data were compared with the transmission and the vehicle oxidation test data.

Optimization of Damping Treatment for Structure Borne Noise Reduction

In automotive industry, all passenger vehicles are treated with damping materials to reduce structure borne noise. The effectiveness of damping treatments depends upon design parameters such as choice of damping materials, locations and size of the treatment. This paper proposes a CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) methodology based on finite element analysis to optimize damping treatments. The developed method uses modal strain-energy information of bare structural panels to identify flexible regions, which in turn facilitates optimization of damping treatments with respect to location and size. The efficacy of the method is demonstrated by optimizing damping treatment for a full-size pick-up truck. Moreover, simulated road noise performances of the truck with and without damping treatments are compared, which show the benefits of applying damping treatment.

Next Generation Torque Control Fluid Technology, Part III: Using an Improved Break-Away Friction Screen Test to Investigate Fundamental Friction Material-Lubricant Interactions

Wet clutch friction devices are the primary means by which torque is transmitted in many of today's modern vehicle drivelines. These devices are used in automatic transmissions, torque vectoring devices, active on-demand vehicle stability systems, and torque biasing differentials. As discussed in a previous SAE paper ( 2006-01-3270 - Next Generation Torque Control Fluid Technology, Part I: Break-Away Friction Slip Screen Test Development), a testing tool was developed to simulate a limited slip differential break-away event using a Full Scale-Low Velocity Friction Apparatus (FS-LVFA). The purpose of this test was to investigate the fundamental interactions between lubricants and friction materials. The original break-away friction screen test, which used actual vehicle clutch plates and a single friction surface, proved a useful tool in screening new friction modifier technology.

New Generation Hydraulic-Mechanical Transmission with Lock-up Mechanisms and Automatic Start Clutch

New Generation Advanced Hydraulic-Mechanical Transmission (A-HMT) with the Lock-Up mechanism and the automatic start clutch mechanism was developed. In the lock-up mechanism, an electronic control in conjunction with transmission control was adopted using oil temperature, throttle opening, and input / output rotation ratio as parameter to reduce a rotational energy change of input and output axis caused by the volumetric efficiency of A-HMT. In the automatic start clutch, the load sensing function, damper function, and cooling function by replacing the simple hydraulic mechanism are equipped. By these solutions, the transmission efficiency has enhanced approximately 10% compared with former A-HMT, and excellent starting performance and smooth transmission performance have achieved.

Low Volatility ZDDP Technology: Part 2 - Exhaust Catalysts Performance in Field Applications

Phosphorus is known to reduce effectiveness of the three-way catalysts (TWC) commonly used by automotive OEMs. This phenomenon is referred to as catalyst deactivation. The process occurs as zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) decomposes in an engine creating many phosphorus species, which eventually interact with the active sites of exhaust catalysts. This phosphorous comes from both oil consumption and volatilization. Novel low-volatility ZDDP is designed in such a way that the amounts of volatile phosphorus species are significantly reduced while their antiwear and antioxidant performances are maintained. A recent field trial conducted in New York City taxi cabs provided two sets of “aged” catalysts that had been exposed to GF-4-type formulations. The trial compared fluids formulated with conventional and low-volatility ZDDPs. Results of field test examination were reported in an earlier paper (1).

Investigations of Compatibility of ETBE Gasoline with Current Gasoline Vehicles

Clarifying the impact of ETBE 8% blended fuel on current Japanese gasoline vehicles, under the Japan Clean Air Program II (JCAPII) we conducted exhaust emission tests, evaporative emission tests, durability tests on the exhaust after-treatment system, cold starting tests, and material immersion tests. ETBE 17% blended fuel was also investigated as a reference. The regulated exhaust emissions (CO, HC, and NOx) didn't increase with any increase of ETBE content in the fuel. In durability tests, no noticeable increase of exhaust emission after 40,000km was observed. In evaporative emissions tests, HSL (Hot Soak Loss) and DBL (Diurnal Breathing Loss) didn't increase. In cold starting tests, duration of cranking using ETBE 8% fuel was similar to that of ETBE 0%. In the material immersion tests, no influence of ETBE on these material properties was observed.

Influence of Introduction of Oblique Moving Deformable Barrier Test on Collision Compatibility

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has developed moving deformable barriers for vehicle crash test procedures to assess vehicle and occupant response in partial overlap vehicle crashes. For this paper, based on the NHTSA Oblique Test procedure, a mid-size sedan was tested. The intent of this research was to provide insight into possible design changes to enhance the oblique collision performance of vehicles. The test results predicted high injury risk for BrIC, chest deflection, and the lower extremities. In this particular study, reducing lower extremity injuries has been focused on. Traditionally, lower extremity injuries have been reduced by limiting the intrusion of the lower region of the cabin's toe-board. In this study, it is assumed that increasing the energy absorbed within the engine compartment is more efficient than reinforcing the passenger compartment as a method to reduce lower extremity injuries.
