Urea-SCR System Demonstration and Evaluation for Heavy-Duty Diesel Trucks

The Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis (ITS-Davis) has brought together a group of public and industrial partners to demonstrate and evaluate the Siemens-Westinghouse Urea-Selective Catalyst Reduction System (SINOx™). The SINOx System has the potential to generate major reductions in nitrogen oxides (NOx) and the volatile organic fraction (VOF) of particulate (PM) from heavy-duty diesel engines, without increasing fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. This demonstration began with engine bench testing at Detroit Diesel Corporation to calibrate the system to attain 1 g/bhp-hr NOx emissions in the transient portion of the US-FTP on a 1999 Series 60 engine that has a 4 g/bhp-hr emission level. The second phase of the project entails an on-highway demonstration of a set of ten, Freightliner Class 8 heavy-duty diesel vehicles. These vehicles are part of the Valley Material Transport fleet based in French Camp, California.

Oxygenates screening for AdvancedPetroleum-Based Diesel Fuels: Part 2. The Effect of Oxygenate Blending Compounds on Exhaust Emissions

Adding oxygenates to diesel fuel has shown the potential for reducing particulate (PM) emissions in the exhaust. The objective of this study was to select the most promising oxygenate compounds as blending components in diesel fuel for advanced engine testing. A fuel matrix was designed to consider the effect of molecular structure and boiling point on the ability of oxygenates to reduce engine-out exhaust emissions from a modern diesel engine. Nine test fuels including a low-sulfur (∼1 ppm), low-aromatic hydrocracked base fuel and 8 oxygenate-base fuel blends were utilized. All oxygenated fuels were formulated to contain 7% wt. of oxygen. A DaimlerChrysler OM611 CIDI engine for light-duty vehicles was controlled with a SwRI Rapid Prototyping Electronic Control System. The base fuel was evaluated in four speed-load modes and oxygenated blends only in one mode. Each operating mode and fuel combination was run in triplicate.

Heavy Duty Diesel Emission Regulations - Past, Present, and Future

Exhaust emissions from heavy-duty truck and bus diesel engines have been legislated from 1970 to 2010. Smoke emissions continue to be controlled but exhaust odor regulations were never promulgated. Gaseous emissions (oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons) were regulated in 1973 and particulate matter first regulated in 1988. Throughout this period there has been cooperation, lawsuits, statement of principles, Consent Decrees and now The Clean Diesel Independent Review Panel. If the 2010 rulemaking remains in place, diesel emissions of NOx and PM will have been reduced 99% from uncontrolled levels.

Electric Machine Thermal Simulation using 1D Network

The prediction of the temperature profile inside an operating electric motor is one of the most important challenges while designing a motor and its associated cooling & lubrication system. This paper describes an integrated thermal simulation methodology for a surface mounted permanent magnet (SMPM) synchronous motor by coupling 1D thermal network analysis with 3D thermal simulation. 1D lumped parameter model is developed with a network of interconnected nodes and thermal resistances representing the heat processes within the SPMSM. The resistances are calculated using theoretical formulae and this thermal network is presented as a system of linear equations solved using matrix operations. Further this network is integrated with 3D FEM model in which lumped parameters are replaced by physical parameters to observe temperature variation within different motor components and simulated in 3D through commercially available tool.

Effect of Small Holes and High Injection Pressures on Diesel Engine Combustion

The use of small-hole diesel injector tips and high injection pressures was investigated as a countermeasure to the increased particulate matter (PM) emissions formed when using exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in diesel engines. This study examined the use of injector tip hole sizes down to about 0.09-mm (0.0035 in.), and injection pressures to 300 MPa (3000 bar, or 43,500 psi). The first phase of these studies was conducted in a high-temperature, high-pressure combustion bomb, with supporting calculations using a unit injector model, a jet-mixing model, and a diesel jet evaporation model. The second phase was conducted in a commercial diesel engine of 12.7-liter displacement designed to meet U.S. 1998 emissions levels. Engine tests were conducted with a baseline cam and a faster rise-rate cam, and three different hole tip sizes. The cams consisted of a baseline cam and a cam of similar design, but with a 12 percent faster rise rate.

The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of pilot fuel injection on engine-out emissions of potentially toxic compounds from a modern diesel engine operated with different fuels including 15% v/v dimethoxy methane in a low-sulfur diesel fuel. Five diesel fuels were examined: a low-sulfur (∼1 ppm), low aromatic, hydrocracked fuel, the same low-sulfur fuel containing 15% v/v dimethoxy methane, a Fischer-Tropsch fuel, a California reformulated fuel, and a EPA number 2 certification fuel. A DaimlerChrysler OM611 CIDI engine was controlled with a SwRI Rapid Prototyping Electronic Control system. The pilot fuel injection was either turned off or turned on with engine control by either Location of Peak Pressure (LPP) of combustion or the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) calibration strategy. These three control strategies were compared over 2 speed-load modes run in triplicate. Thirty-three potentially toxic compounds were measured.

This paper was written to document the results of a development program conducted by Detroit Diesel Corporation in cooperation with U.S. Army. The purpose of this program, was to apply “state-of-the-art” low heat rejection (LHR) technology and cold starting improvements to the 8V-71T engine used in the Self-Propelled Howitzer and Ammunition support vehicles. The principal focus of this report covers the diesel engine air system, Low Heat Rejection cylinder head developments, and the resultant synergism impacting reduced cooling system burden, improved engine performance, reliability, durability, fuel economy, and smoke signature. Concurrent development of a glow plug system is integrated to this development with dramatic resultant impact on engine startability and tactical vehicle performance.

Correlating the Diesel Spray Behavior to Nozzle Design

This paper studies the effect of nozzle geometry on the flow characteristics inside a diesel fuel injection nozzle and correlates to the subsequent atomization process under different operating conditions, using simple turbulent breakup model. Two kinds of nozzles, valve covered orifice (VCO) and mini-SAC nozzle, with various nozzle design parameters were studied. The internal flow inside the nozzle was simulated using 3-D computational fluid dynamics software with k-ε turbulence model. The flow field at the nozzle exit was characterized by two parameters: the fuel discharge coefficient Cd and the initial amplitude parameter amp0. The latter parameter represents the turbulence characteristics of the exit flow. The effects of nozzle geometry on the mean velocity and turbulent energy distribution of the exit flow were also studied. The characteristics of the exit flow were then incorporated into the spray model in KIVA-II to study the effect of nozzle design on diesel spray behavior.

Characterization of Diesel Common Rail Spray Behavior for Single- and Double-hole Nozzles

Double-hole nozzle and multiple injections have the potential for better fuel atomization and mixing in DI engine. In order to evaluate the behavior of the spray for the double-hole nozzles against traditional single-hole ones, high-speed spray visualization was carried out using a streak film camera and a copper vapor laser, and in combination with a long-distance camera when taking microscopic movies. The spray penetration and the cone angle were measured based on the images and compared for variable injection pressures, and for single and split injections, under ambient and elevated chamber pressure conditions. The results showed that the spray of the double-hole nozzle has comparable penetration but smaller cone angle when viewed from the nozzle end, compared to the single-hole nozzle with the same total hole discharge cross-sectional area. For microscopic view, it was observed that the interaction between the dual sprays is very dynamic.

Automatic Code Generation - Technology Adoption Lessons Learned from Commercial Vehicle Case Studies

Using Model-Based Design, engineers model complex systems and simulate them on their desktop environment for analysis and design purposes. Model-Based Design supports a wide variety of C/C++ code generation applications that include stand-alone simulation, rapid control prototyping, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and production or embedded code deployment. Many of these code generation scenarios impose different requirements on the generated code. Stand-alone simulations usually need to run fast, for parameter sweep or Monte Carlo studies, but do not need to execute in true hard real-time. Hardware-in-the-loop tests by definition use engine control unit (ECU) component hardware that requires a hard real-time execution environment to protect the physical devices. Code generated for production ECUs must satisfy hard real-time, efficiency, legacy code, and other requirements involving verification and validation efforts.

Adaptive PCCI Combustion Using Micro-Variable Circular-Orifice (MVCO) Fuel Injector – Key Enabling Technologies for High Efficiency Clean Diesel Engines

This paper presents the latest results for a new high efficiency clean diesel combustion system – Adaptive PCCI Combustion (a premixed charge compression ignition mixed-mode combustion) using a micro-variable circular orifice (MVCO) fuel injector. Key characteristics of the new combustion system such as low NOx and soot emissions, high fuel efficiency, increased engine torque are presented through KIVA simulation results. While early premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) combustion reduces engine-out NOx and soot, it's limited to partial loads by known issues such as combustion control, high HC and CO, and high pressure rise rate, etc. Conventional combustion is well controlled diffusion combustion but comes with high NOx and soot. Leveraging the key merits of PCCI and conventional combustion in a practical engine is both meaningful and challenging.

API CI-4: The First Oil Category for Diesel Engines Using Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation

This oil category was driven by two new cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) engine tests operating with 15% EGR, with used oil soot levels at the end of the test ranging from 6 to 9%. These tests are the Mack T-10 and Cummins M11 EGR, which address ring, cylinder liner, bearing, and valve train wear; filter plugging, and sludge. In addition to these two new EGR tests, there is a Caterpillar single-cylinder test without EGR which measures piston deposits and oil consumption control using an articulated piston. This test is called the Caterpillar 1R and is included in the existing Global DHD-1 specification. In total, the API CI-4 category includes eight fired-engine tests and seven bench tests covering all the engine oil parameters. The new bench tests include a seal compatibility test for fresh oils and a low temperature pumpability test for used oils containing 5% soot. This paper provides a review of the all the tests, matrix results, and limits for this new oil category.
