Vehicle Closure Sound Quality

This paper describes an investigation into the sound quality of passenger car and light truck closure sounds. The closure sound events that were studied included side doors, hoods, trunklids, sliding doors, tailgates, liftgates, and fuel filler doors. Binaural recordings were made of the closure sounds and presented to evaluators. Both paired comparison of preference and semantic differential techniques were used to subjectively quantify the sound quality of the acoustic events. Major psychoacoustic characteristics were identified, and objective measures were then derived that were correlated to the subjective evaluation results. Regression analysis was used to formulate models which can quantify customers perceptions of the sounds based on the objectively derived parameters. Many times it was found that the peak loudness level was a primary factor affecting the subjective impression of component quality.

The Use of in Vehicle STL Testing to Correlate Subsystem Level SEA Models

For the assessment of vehicle acoustics in the early design stages of a vehicle program, the use of full vehicle SEA models is becoming the standard analysis method in the US automotive industry. One benefit is that OEM's and Tier 1 suppliers are able to cascade lower level acoustic performance targets for NVH systems and components. Detailed SEA system level models can be used to assess the performance of systems such as dash panels, floors and doors, however, the results will be questionable until test data Is available. Correlation can be accomplished with buck testing, which is a common practice in the automotive industry for assessing the STL (sound transmission loss) of vehicle level components. The opportunity to conduct buck testing can be limited by the availability of representative bodies to be cut into bucks and the availability of a transmission loss suite with a suitably large opening.

The Development of Ford's Natural Gas Powered Ranger

Operation of America's first factory built vehicles modified to operate on natural gas began in April, 1984, when Ford Motor Company delivered the first of 27 specially equipped 1984 Ranger pickup trucks to 25 major utility and natural gas related companies in the United States and Canada. In addition to the fuel system, modifications to these test vehicles include a 12.8:1 compression ratio engine and a unique distributor calibration to provide performance similar to the gasoline powered vehicle. The fuel tanks are significantly more expensive than gasoline tanks and remain one of the major cost issues with a natural gas powered vehicle. There are however, no unresolvable technological issues that would prevent motor vehicles from operating economically and efficiently on natural gas.

The Corporate Technical Information System: The Ford Inhouse information Utility

Ford Motor Company has developed an inhouse computerized database of product and technical data as an information utility for product and manufacturing engineers and business and marketing analysts. The Corporate Technical Information System (CTIS) is interactive, user friendly, up-to-date, and low cost. CTIS is designed to complement commercial information services. The menu driven program gives users access to IS files including automotive periodical abstracts, vehicle dimensional data, EPA fuel economy data. SAE paper abstracts since 1966, and worldwide materials standards. Searching is done through User defined keywords using Boolean logic to create individual search strategies. CTIS has been used by Ford personnel worldwide since early 1985. Future developments may include offering CTIS to vendors or components and services to Ford Motor Company.

Ford Motor Company Powertrain Engineering instituted an innovative Work Process Plan designed to evaluate, develop, and improve it's selected long-term supplier base. This process was implemented in 1987 and continues to function improving our suppliers capabilities in the areas of Product & Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Production Control, and Sales/Purchasing Interaction. A pilot Supply Base Development, Casting and Machining team was set -up in July, 1987 to assist the casting, machining, piston, and ring supply base. The success of this team lead to the fornation of three additional Supply Base Development teams within the following year to assist suppliers in Sealing, Assemblies, and Front End Accessory Drive (FEAD) commodities.

Steel Powders for High Performance Automotive Parts

Increased use of powder-forged connecting rods in the automotive industry prompted an investigation into the suitability of powders from different suppliers for this application. Specifications developed by North American users call for ultra clean powders to enhance machinability and fatigue life. Powders from four manufacturers were each blended with graphite and lubricant, then pressed, sintered and forged to full density. Metallographic samples were prepared and evaluated for inclusion content. In addition, the powders were mixed to the composition of connecting rods, (C - 0.5%, Cu - 2% and MnS - 0.3%), and were similarly pressed, sintered and forged. Test bars were machined from the forged discs. Uniaxial fatigue tests were performed in the tension-compression mode and strain-life curves were developed. It was determined that all powders examined were very clean and were comparable in their inclusion content.

Statistical Analysis of Vehicle High Mileage NVH Performance

High mileage NVH performance is one of the major concerns in vehicle design for long term customer satisfaction. The current paper is concerned with performance analysis of high mileage vehicles which cover four automobile manufacturers and five vehicle families of the same weight class based on subjective evaluation data. The analysis includes the assessment of five vehicle families from the following aspects: overall and NVH performances, performance by individual attribute, degradation history of each vehicle family, performance variation within each vehicle family. Since the data are statistical in nature, statistical methods are employed, numerically and graphically, in the analysis. The performance categories which exhibit most degradation are identified. The analysis method presented in this paper is applicable to any high mileage vehicle fleet subjective data. The knowledge derived in the study can be used as a guideline in designing vehicles for high mileage NVH robustness.

Rapid Spherical Near-Field Antenna Measurements for Vehicle Applications

As more wireless services such as satellite radio (SDARS), navigation systems, OnStar, and mobile telephones are installed on GM vehicles, there is a need to make quick and accurate vehicle antenna pattern measurements. The interaction between vehicle and antenna must be included to ensure accurate vehicle antenna measurements. This implies that the size of the effective antenna should include both the antenna and vehicle interaction dimensions. For the frequency range of 500 MHz to 6 GHz, one solution is to use a spherical near-field system. The Satimo rapid probe array technology was selected to develop a vehicle antenna test system (ATS), which minimizes test time and maintains data accuracy. The ATS was designed to operate inside of an existing GM electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) anechoic chamber equipped with a nine-meter turntable.

Ranking of Lubricants for Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFV) by a Short Engine Sequence Test

A short engine sequence test, based on the Sequence VD procedure, was used to screen FFV oil candidates more rapidly. Since only one engine is needed to compare the wear-protection performance of several lubricants, engine hardware variability is not a significant issue in this test procedure. Several lubricants, some specially formulated for FFV engines, were tested using standard Sequence VD engine hardware which includes molybdenum top piston-rings. Results showed clear discrimination of the performance of oil candidates. These lubricants were also tested using an engine with chromium-faced top rings and exhibited similar performance ranking.

Quantifying Hands-Free Call Quality in an Automobile

Hands-free phone use is the most utilized use case for vehicles equipped with infotainment systems with external microphones that support connection to phones and implement speech recognition. Critically then, achieving hands-free phone call quality in a vehicle is problematic due to the extremely noisy nature of the vehicle environment. Noise generated by wind, mechanical and structural, tire to road, passengers, engine/exhaust, HVAC air pressure and flow are all significant contributors and sources of noise. Other factors influencing the quality of the phone call include microphone placement, cabin acoustics, seat position of the talker, noise reduction of the hands-free system, etc. This paper describes the work done to develop procedures and metrics to quantify the effects that influence the hands-free phone call quality.

Vehicle sound package serves two basic functions: general acoustic insulation and local problem treatment. The former is often done at the up-front phase of the vehicle development process, and the latter at the downstream phase when representative prototype hardware becomes available and specific noise problems are identified. This paper examines the goals and key tasks of practical SEA CAE applications in the two phases of the sound package development process. Topics on CAE model requirement, typical analysis applications, and ways to improve the effectiveness of SEA applications to compliment hardware testing are discussed.

Powertrain mounting systems design and development involves creating and optimizing a solution using specific mount rates and evaluation over multiple operating conditions. These mount rates become the recommended “nominal” rates in the specifications. The powertrain mounts typically contain natural materials. These properties have variation, resulting in a tolerance around the nominal specification and lead to differences in noise and vibration performance. A powertrain mounting system that is robust to this variation is desired. The design and development process requires evaluation of these mounts, within tolerance, to ensure that the noise and vibration performance is consistently met. During the hardware development of the powertrain mounting system, a library of mounts that include the range of production variation is studied. However, this is time consuming.

At the same time that societal environmental expectations have increased and resulted in greater demand for the recycling of all materials. Efforts in recycling continue to be explored among the automotive community in planning for the recycling of the plastics being used in current products. Automotive manufacturers and their raw material suppliers are investigating technologies and processes that create the opportunity to produce viable outlets for recycled materials into both their original and other applications. The success of these efforts encouraged the investigation and development of a process to recycle post consumer bumpers as well.

Occupant Preferred Back Angle Relative to Head Restraint Regulations

Having, by now, introduced several new vehicles that comply with FMVSS 202a, manufacturers are reporting an increased number of complaints from consumers who find that the head restraint is too close; negatively affecting their posture. It is speculated that one of the reasons that head restraints meeting the new requirement are problematic is that the FMVSS backset measurement is performed at a back angle that is more reclined than the back angle most drivers choose and the back angle at which the seat / vehicle was designed. The objective of this paper is to confirm this hypothesis and elaborate on implications for regulatory compliance in FMVSS 202a.

Methods and Tools for Calculating the Flexibility of Automotive HW/SW Architectures

To cope with the increasing number of advanced features (e.g., smart-phone integration and side-blind zone alert.) being deployed in vehicles, automotive manufacturers are designing flexible hardware architectures which can accommodate increasing feature content with as fewer as possible hardware changes so as to keep future costs down. In this paper, we propose a formal and quantitative definition of flexibility, a related methodology and a tool flow aimed at maximizing the flexibility of an automotive hardware architecture with respect to the features that are of greater importance to the designer. We define flexibility as the ability of an architecture to accommodate future changes in features with no changes in hardware (no addition/replacement of processors, buses, or memories). We utilize an optimization framework based on mixed integer linear programming (MILP) which computes the flexibility of the architecture while guaranteeing performance and safety requirements.

Suppliers and integrators are working with SAE’s HM-1 standards team to develop a mechanism to allow “Health Ready Components” to be integrated into larger systems to enable broader IVHM functionality (reference SAE JA6268). This paper will discuss how the design data provided by the supplier of a component/subsystem can be integrated into a vehicle reference model with emphasis on how each aspect of the model is transmitted to minimize ambiguity. The intent is to enhance support for the analytics, diagnostics and prognostics for the embedded component. In addition, we describe functionality being delegated to other system components and that provided by the supplier via syndicated web services. As a specific example, the paper will describe the JA6268 data submittal for a typical automotive turbocharger and other engine air system components to clarify the data modeling and integration processes.

The innovation term has been so widely misused that the confusion observed among the companies trying to get themselves into the innovation realm is a common and natural consequence. The lack of understanding of the innovation dynamics, flow and metrics generally culminate in a non-well-thought implementation of innovation processes and policies that are usually tragic in the short term. The most common consequences are the loss of credibility of the innovation process in general among leaders and employees, and the loss of credibility of the company as an innovative company among suppliers, partners and customers, causing these companies to abandon this powerful tool and, as consequence, to limit their capabilities to compete in the future. In order to prevent this from happening, companies that were not built upon innovation will need to grow capability and change cultural priorities to match the demands of the innovation process.

Spark timing is known to be a critical variable for engine performance. It is important to measure timing under transient conditions as well as steady state timing. Such transients include accelerations, decelerations and rough idle situations such as those occurring in engines tested directly off the production line. Conventional measurement devices have performance limitations. Timing lights will not measure transients and are limited in accuracy due to tolerance stack-ups and parallax effects. Some spark protractors require the use of externally mounted optical shaft encoders which are accurate but require a difficult mounting procedure. Such encoders are also susceptible to contamination and vibration. Other spark protractors operate under the assumption of steady state conditions by equating time with engine rotational angle. This eliminates the need for a shaft encoder but suffers in accuracy under transient conditions.
