U.S. Automotive Corrosion Trends Over the Past Decade

Since 1985, the Body Division of the Automotive Corrosion and Prevention Committee of SAE (ACAP) has conducted biannual surveys of automotive body corrosion in the Detroit area. The purpose of these surveys is to track industry wide corrosion protection improvements and to make this information available for public consumption. The survey consists of a closed car parking lot survey checking for perforations, blisters, and surface rust. This paper reports the results of the five surveys conducted to date.

Perforation Corrosion Performance of Autobody Steel Sheet in On-Vehicle and Accelerated Tests

The Auto/Steel Partnership Corrosion Project Team has completed a perforation corrosion test program consisting of on-vehicle field exposures and various accelerated tests. Steel sheet products with eight combinations of metallic and organic coatings were tested, utilizing a simple crevice coupon design. On-vehicle exposures were conducted in St. John's and Detroit for up to seven years to establish a real-world performance standard. Identical test specimens were exposed to the various accelerated tests, and the results were compared to the real-world standard. This report documents the results of these tests, and compares the accelerated test results (including SAE J2334, GM9540P, Ford APGE, CCT-I, ASTM B117, South Florida Modified Volvo, and Kure Beach (25-meter) exposures) to the on-vehicle tests. The results are compared in terms of five criteria: extent of corrosion, rank order of material performance, degree of correlation, acceleration factor, and control of test environment.

Coupled Weld-Rupture Analysis of Automotive Assemblies: A Study to Demonstrate the Impact of Welding Processes on the Performance of Weldments

Welding processes are complex in nature. They affect the mechanical properties of a weldment in and around the welding joint (in the heat affected zone: HAZ), causing deformation and inducing high level of residual stress and plastic strain which are detrimental to the weldment performance. After welding some materials soften while others harden in the heat affected zone, depending on the process heat input, the thickness of the material and its chemical composition. Traditionally, finite element (FE) performance analyses (crash, rupture, fatigue, static and dynamic tests) of weldments are performed without accounting for the effects of welding processes and as such the real performance of a weldment is not accurately predicted. On one hand, if base material properties are used to represent a weldment which hardens in the heat affected zone, the performance analysis results would be too conservative which would hinder/limit potential weight reduction strategies.

Applying Complex Turbulent Cross-Correlation Function to an SEA Side Glass to Predict Interior Wind Noise

This paper presents new advances in predicting wind noise contribution to interior SPL in the framework of the Wind Noise German Working Group composed of Audi, Daimler, Porsche and VW. In particular, a new approach was developed that allows to fully describe the wind noise source using CFD generated surface pressure distribution and its cross-correlation function and apply this source on an SEA side glass. This new method removes the need to use a diffuse acoustic field or several plane waves with various incidence angle to approximate the correct acoustics source character to apply on the SEA side glass. This new approach results are compared with results previously published which use more deterministic methods to represent the side glass and the interior of a vehicle.
