A Comprehensive Numerical Approach to Predict Thermal Runaway in Li-Ion Battery Packs

With the increasing level of electrification of on-road, off-road and stationary applications, use of larger lithium-ion battery packs has become essential. These packs require large capital investments on the order of millions of dollars and pose a significant risk of self-annihilation without rigorous safety evaluation and management. Testing these larger battery packs to validate design changes can be cost prohibitive. A reliable numerical simulation tool to predict battery thermal runaway under various abuse scenarios is essential to engineer safety into the battery pack design stage. A comprehensive testing & simulation workflow has been established to calibrate and validate the numerical modeling approach with the test data for each of the individual sub model - electrochemical, internal short circuit and thermal abuse model. A four-equation thermal abuse model was built and validated for lithium-ion 21700 form factor cylindrical cells using NCA cathodes.

A Critical Analysis of Traffic Accident Data

General agreement exists that the ultimate goals of traffic accident research are to reduce fatality, mitigate injury and decrease economic loss to society. Although massive quantities of data have been collected in local, national and international programs, attempts by analysts to use these data to explore ideas or support hypotheses have been met by a variety of problems. Specifically, the coded variables in the different files are not consistent and little information on accident etiology is collected. Examples of the inadequacies of present data in terms of the collected and coded variables are shown. The vehicular, environmental and human (consisting of human factors and injury factors) variables are disproportionately represented in most existing data files in terms of recognized statistical evidence of accident causation. A systems approach is needed to identify critical, currently neglected variables and develop units of measurement and data collection procedures.

A Model and the Methodology for Determining Wear Particle Generation Rate and Filter Efficiency in a Diesel Engine Using Ferrography

Monitoring of the wear rate of a diesel engine will yield valuable information regarding the wear mechanism within a diesel engine and ultimately will improve the predictions of failing engines and/or their components to allow preventive maintenance which will prolong the life of the engine. A mathematical model was developed that describes the wear particle concentration as a function of time in a diesel engine. This model contains engine and lubrication system parameters that determine the concentration of wear particles in the engine sump. These variables are the oil system volume, oil flow rate, particle generation rate, filtering efficiency and the initial particle concentration. The model has been employed to study the wear particle concentrations in the sump and the mass of particles in the filter for the Cummins VT-903 diesel engine.

A Zero Trust Architecture for Automotive Networks

Since the early 1990’s, commercial vehicles have suffered from repeated vulnerability exploitations that resulted in a need for improved automotive cybersecurity. This paper outlines the strategies and challenges of implementing an automotive Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) to secure intra-vehicle networks. Zero Trust (ZT) originated as an Information Technology (IT) principle of “never trust, always verify”; it is the concept that a network must never assume assets can be trusted regardless of their ownership or network location. This research focused on drastically improving security of the cyber-physical vehicle network, with minimal performance impact measured as timing, bandwidth, and processing power. The automotive ZTA was tested using a software-in-the-loop vehicle simulation paired with resource constrained hardware that closely emulated a production vehicle network.

Aging of Zeolite Based Automotive Hydrocarbon Traps

This paper analyzes the aging of zeolite based hydrocarbon traps to guide development of diagnostic algorithms. Previous research has shown the water adsorption ability of zeolite ages along with the hydrocarbon adsorption ability, and this leads to a possible diagnostic algorithm: the water concentration in the exhaust can be measured and related to aging. In the present research, engine experiments demonstrate that temperature measurements are also related to aging. To examine the relationship between temperature-based and moisture-based diagnostic algorithms, a transient, nonlinear heat and mass transfer model of the exhaust during cold-start is developed. Despite some idealizations, the model replicates the qualitative behavior of the exhaust system. A series of parametric studies reveals the sensitivity of the system response to aging and various noise factors.

Alleviating the Magnetic Effects on Magnetometers Using Vehicle Kinematics for Yaw Estimation for Autonomous Ground Vehicles

Autonomous vehicle operation is dependent upon accurate position estimation and thus a major concern of implementing the autonomous navigation is obtaining robust and accurate data from sensors. This is especially true, in case of Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor data. The IMU consists of a 3-axis gyro, 3-axis accelerometer, and 3-axis magnetometer. The IMU provides vehicle orientation in 3D space in terms of yaw, roll and pitch. Out of which, yaw is a major parameter to control the ground vehicle’s lateral position during navigation. The accelerometer is responsible for attitude (roll-pitch) estimates and magnetometer is responsible for yaw estimates. However, the magnetometer is prone to environmental magnetic disturbances which induce errors in the measurement.

An Efficient Level-Set Flame Propagation Model for Hybrid Unstructured Grids Using the G-Equation

Computational fluid dynamics of gas-fueled large-bore spark ignition engines with pre-chamber ignition can speed up the design process of these engines provided that 1) the reliability of the results is not affected by poor meshing and 2) the time cost of the meshing process does not negatively compensate for the advantages of running a computer simulation. In this work a flame propagation model that runs with arbitrary hybrid meshes was developed and coupled with the KIVA4-MHI CFD solver, in order to address these aims. The solver follows the G-Equation level-set method for turbulent flame propagation by Tan and Reitz, and employs improved numerics to handle meshes featuring different cell types such as hexahedra, tetrahedra, square pyramids and triangular prisms. Detailed reaction kinetics from the SpeedCHEM solver are used to compute the non-equilibrium composition evolution downstream and upstream of the flame surface, where chemical equilibrium is instead assumed.

An Engine Start/Stop System for Improved Fuel Economy

During city traffic or heavily congested roads, a vehicle can consume a substantial amount of fuel idling when the vehicle is stopped. Due to regulation enforcement, auto manufacturers are developing systems to increase the mileage and reduce emissions. Turning off the engine at traffic lights and regenerative braking systems are simple ways to reduce emissions and fuel consumption. In order to develop strong manufacturer and consumer interest, this type of operation needs to be automated such that the stop/start functionality requires no driver interaction and takes place without the intervention of the vehicle operator. Valeo Electrical Systems has developed such a system that replaces the OEM engine alternator with a starter/alternator driven by a standard multi-ribbed V belt. To avoid a break and dual voltage network, this system is based on a 12V electrical system using an Enhanced Power Supply.

Analysis Process for Truck Fuel Efficiency Study

Medium- and Heavy Duty Truck fuel consumption and the resulting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are significant contributors to overall U.S. GHG emissions. Forecasts of medium- and heavy-duty vehicle activity and fuel use predict increased use of freight transport will result in greatly increased GHG emissions in the coming decades. As a result, the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized a regulation requiring reductions in medium and heavy truck fuel consumption and GHGs beginning in 2014. The agencies are now proposing new regulations that will extend into the next decade, requiring additional fuel consumption and GHG emissions reductions. To support the development of future regulations, a research project was sponsored by NHTSA to look at technologies that could be used for compliance with future regulations.

Autonomous Vehicle Sensor Suite Data with Ground Truth Trajectories for Algorithm Development and Evaluation

This paper describes a multi-sensor data set, suitable for testing algorithms to detect and track pedestrians and cyclists, with an autonomous vehicle’s sensor suite. The data set can be used to evaluate the benefit of fused sensing algorithms, and provides ground truth trajectories of pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles for objective evaluation of track accuracy. One of the principal bottlenecks for sensing and perception algorithm development is the ability to evaluate tracking algorithms against ground truth data. By ground truth we mean independent knowledge of the position, size, speed, heading, and class of objects of interest in complex operational environments. Our goal was to execute a data collection campaign at an urban test track in which trajectories of moving objects of interest are measured with auxiliary instrumentation, in conjunction with several autonomous vehicles (AV) with a full sensor suite of radar, lidar, and cameras.

Cetane Number Prediction from Proton-Type Distribution and Relative Hydrogen Population

A theoretical model for predicting cetane number of primary reference fuels from parameters measurable by proton nuclear magnetic resonance is presented. This modeling technique is expanded to include secondary reference fuels, pure hydrocarbons, and commercial-type fuels. An evaluation of the ignition process indicated that not only hydrogen type distribution measurable by proton NMR, but also relative hydrogen population is important in predicting cetane number. Two mathematical models are developed. One predicts cetane number of saturate fuels and the second predicts cetane number of fuels containing aromatic components. The aromatic fuel model is tested using the ASTM Diesel Check Fuels and shown to predict within the standard error of the model.

Characterization of the Three Phase Catalytic Wet Oxidation Process in the International Space Station (ISS) Water Processor Assembly

A three phase catalytic mathematical model was developed for analysis and optimization of the volatile reactor assembly (VRA) used on International Space Station (ISS) Water Processor. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood Hougen-Watson (L-H) expression was used to describe the surface reaction rate. Small column experiments were used to determine the L-H rate parameters. The test components used in the experiments were acetic acid, acetone, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol and propionic acid. These compounds are the most prevalent ones found in the influent to the VRA reactor. The VRA model was able to predict performance of small column data and experimental data from the VRA flight experiment.

Control Strategies for a Series-Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Living in the era of rising environmental sensibility and increasing gasoline prices, the development of a new environmentally friendly generation of vehicles becomes a necessity. Hybrid electric vehicles are one means of increasing propulsion system efficiency and decreasing pollutant emissions. In this paper, the series-parallel power-split configuration for Michigan Technological University's FutureTruck is analyzed. Mathematical equations that describe the hybrid power-split transmission are derived. The vehicle's differential equations of motion are developed and the system's need for a controller is shown. The engine's brake power and brake specific fuel consumption, as a function of its speed and throttle position, are experimentally determined. A control strategy is proposed to achieve fuel efficient engine operation. The developed control strategy has been implemented in a vehicle simulation and in the test vehicle.

Decision-Making for Autonomous Mobility Using Remotely Sensed Terrain Parameters in Off-Road Environments

Off-road vehicle operation requires constant decision-making under great uncertainty. Such decisions are multi-faceted and range from acquisition decisions to operational decisions. A major input to these decisions is terrain information in the form of soil properties. This information needs to be propagated to path planning algorithms that augment them with other inputs such as visual terrain assessment and other sensors. In this sequence of steps, many resources are needed, and it is not often clear how best to utilize them. We present an integrated approach where a mission’s overall performance is measured using a multiattribute utility function. This framework allows us to evaluate the value of acquiring terrain information and then its use in path planning. The computational effort of optimizing the vehicle path is also considered and optimized. We present our approach using the data acquired from the Keweenaw Research Center terrains and present some results.

Demonstration of Energy Consumption Reduction in Class 8 Trucks Using Eco-Driving Algorithm Based on On-Road Testing

Vehicle to Everything (V2X) communication has enabled on-board access to information from other vehicles and infrastructure. This information, traditionally used for safety applications, is increasingly being used for improving vehicle fuel economy [1-5]. This work aims to demonstrate energy consumption reductions in heavy/medium duty vehicles using an eco-driving algorithm. The algorithm is enabled by V2X communication and uses data contained in Basic Safety Messages (BSMs) and Signal Phase and Timing (SPaT) to generate an energy-efficient velocity trajectory for the vehicle to follow. An urban corridor was modeled in a microscopic traffic simulation package and was calibrated to match real-world traffic conditions. A nominal reduction of 7% in energy consumption and 6% in trip time was observed in simulations of eco-driving trucks.

Design and Control Considerations for a Series Heavy Duty Hybrid Hydraulic Vehicle

Hybrid hydraulic power trains are a natural fit for heavy duty vehicle applications due to their high power density. This paper describes the analytical formulae available for sizing a series hybrid hydraulic vehicle without changing the engine size. Sizing of pump, accumulator and motor are addressed specifically. A control strategy is also suggested for operating the engine and powertrain pressure close to the best efficiency zones. An example is then given using an FMTV (Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles) platform with a CAT C7 engine. Simulation results are generated using VPSET (Vehicle Propulsion Systems Evaluation Tool), an SwRI-developed vehicle modeling and simulation tool. The hydraulic components are sized according to the recommendations in this paper. The suggested control strategy is implemented in VPSET and performance of the series hydraulic hybrid configuration is compared with that of a conventional powertrain.

Development and Validation of Dynamic Programming based Eco Approach and Departure Algorithm

Eco Approach and Departure (Eco-AnD) is a Connected Automated Vehicle (CAV) technology aiming to reduce energy consumption for crossing a signalized intersection or set of intersections in a corridor that features vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication capability. This research focuses on developing a Dynamic Programming (DP) based algorithm for a PHEV operating in Charge Depleting mode. The algorithm used the Reduced Order Energy Model (ROM) to capture the vehicle powertrain characteristics and road grade to capture the road dynamics. The simulation results are presented for a real-world intersection and 20-25% energy benefits are shown by comparing against a simulated human driver speed profile. The vehicle-level validation of the developed algorithm is carried out by performing closed-course track testing of the optimized speed solutions on a real CAV vehicle.

Downspeeding and Supercharging a Diesel Passenger Car for Increased Fuel Economy

The effects of downspeeding and supercharging a passenger car diesel engine were studied through laboratory investigation and vehicle simulation. Changes in the engine operating range, transmission gearing, and shift schedule resulted in improved fuel consumption relative to the baseline turbocharged vehicle while maintaining performance and drivability metrics. A shift schedule optimization technique resulted in fuel economy gains of up to 12% along with a corresponding reduction in transmission shift frequency of up to 55% relative to the baseline turbocharged configuration. First gear acceleration, top gear passing, and 0-60 mph acceleration of the baseline turbocharged vehicle were retained for the downsped supercharged configuration.

Easily Verifiable Adaptive Sliding Mode Controller Design with Application to Automotive Engines

Verification and validation (V&V) are essential stages in the design cycle of industrial controllers to remove the gap between the designed and implemented controller. In this study, a model-based adaptive methodology is proposed to enable easily verifiable controller design based on the formulation of a sliding mode controller (SMC). The proposed adaptive SMC improves the controller robustness against major implementation imprecisions including sampling and quantization. The application of the proposed technique is demonstrated on the engine cold start emission control problem in a mid-size passenger car. The cold start controller is first designed in a single-input single-output (SISO) structure with three separate sliding surfaces, and then is redesigned based on a multiinput multi-output (MIMO) SMC design technique using nonlinear balanced realization.

Eco-Routing Algorithm for Energy Savings in Connected Vehicles Using Commercial Navigation Information

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, primarily designed for communication between vehicles and other entities for safety applications, is now being studied for its potential to improve vehicle energy efficiency. In previous work, a 20% reduction in energy consumption was demonstrated on a 2017 Prius Prime using V2X-enabled algorithms. A subsequent phase of the work is targeting an ambitious 30% reduction in energy consumption compared to a baseline. In this paper, we present the Eco-routing algorithm, which is key to achieving these savings. The algorithm identifies the most energy-efficient route between an Origin-Destination (O-D) pair by leveraging information accessible through commercially available Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). This algorithm is evaluated both virtually and experimentally through simulations and dynamometer tests, respectively, and is shown to reduce vehicle energy consumption by 10-15% compared to the baseline over real-world routes.
