The Effects of the Compression Ratio, Equivalence Ratio, and Intake Air Temperature on Ignition Timing in an HCCI Engine Using DME Fuel

Attention has recently been focused on homogeneous charge compression ignition combustion (HCCI) as an effective combustion process for resolving the essential nature of combustion. Meanwhile, dimethylether (DME) has attracted interest as a potential alternative fuel for compression ignition engines. Authors measured the combustion process of DME HCCI by using a spectroscopic method. A diesel engine was used as the test engine. The results of these analyses showed that changes in the compression ratio, intake air temperature and equivalence ratio influenced the ignition timing in the HCCI combustion process. This paper discusses these effects in reference to the experimental and calculated results.

Study on Realization of Dual Combustion Cycle by Lean Mixture and Direct Fuel Injection

The purpose of this study is to realize dual-combustion cycle for gasoline engines. For the purpose, lean combustion and direct fuel injection were applied to small diesel engine. The lean gasoline-air mixture was provided and was ignited by small amount of pilot diesel fuel injection (constant volume combustion). Then, diesel fuel was injected by main injection and was burned with the remained oxygen after the lean combustion (diffusion combustion). The equivalence ratio 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 of mixture were used to avoid the spontaneous compression auto-ignition. The total equivalence ratio with supplied gasoline and diesel fuel was adjusted to 1.0. The base pilot injection timing was selected as the ignition of pre-mixture took place at T.D.C. and pilot injection timings were changed 2 degree before and behind of base timing. The main fuel injection timings were 50, 75 and 100% of the duration between pilot injection timing and T.D.C.

Study on Knocking Intensity and Autoignitive Propagation Velocity with the Same Methane Number Mixtures of Methane/Ethane and Methane/n-Butane

Although methane number is widely used to predict knocking occurrence and its intensity, it does not determine a fuel composition uniquely, that means, the knocking intensity by the different composition fuel must show difference even if the same methane number fuels are employed. To establish a novel index, the knocking intensity and the autoignitive propagation velocity, as consequence of spontaneous ignition process, are investigated both experimentally and numerically by using the different composition gaseous fuels with same methane number. Methane/ethane/air and methane/n-butane/air mixtures with the same methane number of 70 and the equivalence ratio of 0.5 were employed. They are rapidly compressed and ignited spontaneously by a Rapid Compression Machine. Ignition delay times, autoignitive propagation velocities, and knocking intensity were measured by acquired pressure histories and high-speed imaging.

Study on Knocking Characteristics for High-Efficiency Operation of a Super-Lean Spark Ignition Engine

This study investigated the influence of EGR and spark advance on knocking under high compression ratio, ultra-lean mixture and supercharged condition using premium gasoline as a test fuel. A high-compression ratio, supercharged single cylinder engine was used in this experiment. As a result, the period from ignition to autoignition was prolonged. In addition, knock intensity was drastically reduced. In other words, it is inferred that by combining an appropriate amount of EGR and spark advance, high efficiency operation avoiding knocking can be realized.

Study on Efficiency Improvement of Compact Generator for Motorcycle

This paper describes our attempts to improve the power generation efficiency of single-phase permanent magnet generators of outer-rotor type for motorcycles by their reducing electric losses (iron loss and copper loss) by electromagnetic analysis. In this study, we first broke down the electric losses into iron loss and copper loss by electromagnetic analysis. Then, focusing on the iron loss that the loss ratio was high, we modified the thickness and material of the stator core sheets and reduced the iron loss in the non-magnetic protection covers of the magnets on the rotor, and thus improved power generation efficiency. Further, we analyzed the flow of magnetic flux and magnetic flux density and found that it would be effective against leakage of the flux between the magnets if we spaced the magnets, which we did and which also allowed us to reduce the amount of magnets used.

Study on Combustion and Exhaust Gas Emission Characteristics of Lean Gasoline-Air Mixture Ignited by Diesel Fuel Direct Injection

The uniform lean gasoline-air mixture was provided to diesel engine and was ignited by direct diesel fuel injection. The mixing region that is formed by diesel fuel penetration and entrainment of ambient mixture is regarded as combustible turbulent jet. The ignition occurs in this region and the ambient lean mixture is burned by flame propagation. The lean mixture of air-fuel ratio between 150 and 35 could be ignited and burned by this ignition method. An increase of diesel fuel injection is effective to ensure combustion and ignition. As diesel fuel injection increases, HC concentration decreases, and NOx and CO concentration increases.

Spectroscopic Measurement of OH Radical Emission Behavior Using a 2-Cycle Engine

The aim of this research was to investigate the mechanism causing autoignition and the effect of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on combustion by detecting the behavior of the OH radical and other excited molecules present in the flame in a spark ignition engine. The test equipment used was a 2-cycle engine equipped with a Schnürle scavenging system. Using emission spectroscopy, the behavior of the OH radical was measured at four locations in the end zone of the combustion chamber. The OH radical plays an important role in the elemental reactions of hydrocarbon fuels. When a certain level of EGR was applied according to the engine operating conditions, the unburned gas became active owing to heat transfer from residual gas near the measurement positions on the exhaust port side and the influence of excited species in the residual gas, and autoignition tended to occur.

Simultaneous Analysis of Light Absorption and Emission in Preflame Reactions under Knocking Operation

The study deals with the light absorption and emission behavior in the preflame reaction interval before hot flame reactions.(1-3) Absorption spectroscopy was used to measure the behavior of HCHO and OH radicals during a progression from normal combustion to knocking operation. Emission spectroscopic measurements were obtained in the same way that radical added HCO. Radical behavior in preflame reactions was thus examined on the basis of simultaneous measurements, which combined each absorption wavelength with three emission wavelength by using a monochromator and a newly developed polychromator.(4-5) When n-heptane (0 RON) and blended fuel (50 RON) were used as test fuel, it was observed that radical behavior differed between normal combustion and knocking operation and a duration of the preflame reaction was shorter during the progression from normal combustion to a condition of knocking.

Simulation and Analysis of Small-vehicle Deceleration to Reduce Occupant Injury at Frontal Collision

With the surge of environmental problems, the number of small vehicles with lower energy consumption is increasing. For such a vehicle, difficulty of achieving crashworthiness exists since it has smaller deformation space in a frontal impact accident. Smaller deformation space needs high vehicle deceleration for absorbing kinetic energy of the vehicle.The high vehicle deceleration in the event of a frontal collision may produce high occupant deceleration, resulting high chances of an occupant injury value. In this study, over 138 types of vehicle decelerations expressed by three variables in a frontal collision were examined in order to reduce occupant decelerations. Solving differential equations, following results were obtained (1) The minimum value of the maximum occupant deceleration exists.

Sensory Evaluation for Motorcycle Gear Shift Feeling with Simulator

Gear shift feeling is often an important factor which appeals to motorcycle riders. Therefore, it is important for designers to create a pleasant gear shift feeling when developing a motorcycle. Sensory evaluation tests are indispensable for quantifying the gear shift feeling, but are very difficult to conduct with an actual motorcycle. Therefore, we developed a simulator dedicated to sensory evaluation tests, used it to conduct sensory evaluation tests, and thus clarified the relationship between the physical amount of gear shift properties and gear shift feeling. This paper describes the development of the simulator, the sensory evaluation tests conducted on gear shift feeling using the simulator, and the results of analysis.

Prediction of Aeroacoustical Interior Noise of a Car, Part-2 Structural and Acoustical Analyses

One-way coupled simulation method that combines CFD, structural and acoustical analyses has been developed aiming at predicting the aeroacoustical interior noise for a wide range of frequency between 100 Hz and 4 kHz. Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) has been widely used for evaluating transmission of sound through a car body and resulting interior sound field. Instead of SEA, we directly computed vibration and sound in order to investigate and understand propagation paths of vibration in a car body and sound fields. As the first step of this approach, we predicted the pressure fluctuations on the external surfaces of a car by computing the unsteady flow around the car. Secondly, the predicted pressure fluctuations were fed to the subsequent structural vibration analysis to predict vibration accelerations on the internal surfaces of the car.

Prediction of Aeroacoustical Interior Noise of a Car, Part-1 Prediction of Pressure Fluctuations on External Surfaces of a Car

A wall-resolving Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has been performed by using up to 40 billion grids with a minimum grid resolution of 0.1 mm for predicting the exterior hydrodynamic pressure fluctuations in the turbulent boundary layers of a test car with simplified geometry. At several sampling points on the car surface, which included a point on the side window, the door panel, and the front fender panel, the computed hydrodynamic pressure fluctuations were compared with those measured by microphones installed on the surface of the car in a wind tunnel, and effects of the grid resolution on the accuracy of the predicted frequency spectra were discussed. The power spectra of the pressure fluctuations computed with 5 billion grid LES agreed reasonably well with those measured in the wind tunnel up to around 2 kHz although they had some discrepancy with the measured ones in the low and middle frequencies.

Prediction Method of Speed Characteristics of V-Belt CVT

The Mechanical CVT is mainly used for small size motorcycle called “scooter”, which has a 250 cc or less engine capacity. The speed characteristics of the Mechanical CVT are decided by engine speed and load-torque on driven pulley. In few papers, these characteristics are studied under full-load or no-load condition [1]-[2]. However, the characteristics at part-load condition are not well known. To develop a motorcycle with low fuel consumption, it is important that the characteristics at part-load condition are considered in driving cycle. Driving cycle simulation is needed to estimate CVT ratio at design stage. This research proposes equations representing the speed characteristics of the Mechanical CVT at part-load condition. Driving cycle simulation is also developed for estimation of the fuel consumption at optional driving cycles and the dynamic behavior of the CVT system. It could be a CVT design tool to makes sure whether its performance is achieved for design targets.

Piston Temperature Measurement in Internal Combustion with Telemetric Method

Currently, the improvement of fuel economy is the most important issue in automobile engine development. To improve fuel economy via greater thermal efficiency, the enhancement of the compression ratio and the reduction of thermal losses because of cooling have been widely investigated. These efforts to improve thermal efficiency increase the thermal load on pistons. Ensuring the reliability of the pistons and the antiknocking capacity of engines require a better understanding of piston temperature distributions through accurate measurements under various engine operating conditions. Thus, direct and indirect measurement methods have been developed to estimate the actual piston temperature. Direct methods, such as linkage-type measurements, are not typically applicable under higher engine speeds because of the poor durability of linkages.

Optical Measurement of Autoignition and Combustion Behavior in an HCCI Engine

In this study, optical measurements were made of the combustion chamber gas during operation of a Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine in order to obtain a better understanding of the ignition and combustion characteristics. The principal issues of HCCI engines are to control the ignition timing and to optimize the combustion state following ignition. Autoignition in HCCI engines is strongly influenced by the complex low-temperature oxidation reaction process, alternatively referred to as the cool flame reaction or negative temperature coefficient (NTC) region. Accordingly, a good understanding of this low-temperature oxidation reaction process is indispensable to ignition timing control. In the experiments, spectroscopic measurement methods were applied to investigate the reaction behavior in the process leading to autoignition.

This paper describes a fundamental design for a riding simulator of two wheeled vehicle which is used to analyze the human factor of riders. At the first step of this research, the relationship between the movement of rider and behavior of a two wheeled vehicle is inquired with experiments on a proving ground. Based on the results, the degrees of freedom which is required by simulator and main input of rider are settled. This study goes along examination of the expression method of simulated movements, and production of the riding simulator.

Dimethyl ether (DME; CH3OCH3) has attracted interest as a potential alternative fuel for compression ignition engines. We measured the HCCI process of DME in a test diesel engine by using a spectroscopic method. Simultaneous measurements were also done on exhaust emissions of hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Based on the experimental data, this paper discusses the relationship between the equivalence ratio and the observed tendencies.

Laser Breakdown-Assisted Long-Distance Discharge Ignition

We developed a novel ignition method called laser breakdown-assisted long-distance discharge ignition (LBALDI) that combines laser breakdown with a discharge to realize lean combustion. The creation of laser breakdown plasma between electrodes for discharge enables discharges over longer distances than those of conventional sparkplug as inferred from laser-triggered lightning or laser-triggered gas switches. This method should help realize volumetric ignition through the creation of a long-distance discharge. Experiments on the fundamental discharge and ignition of methane/air mixtures were conducted. The optimum incident time of the laser prior to the application of a high voltage was found to reduce the sparkover voltage and markedly reduce the voltage required by LBALDI under pressurized air conditions. In the ignition experiment, LBALDI showed the fastest heat release rate at the lean flammable limit.

Investigations of the impact of 10% ethanol blended fuels on performances of sold gasoline vehicles in the Japanese market already on the road in Japan

The study of 10% ethanol blended gasoline (E10 gasoline) utilization has been conducted in the Japan Auto-Oil Program (JATOP). In order to clarify the impact of E10 gasoline on vehicle performances, exhaust emissions, evaporative emissions, driveability and material compatibility have been investigated by using domestic gasoline vehicles including mini motor vehicles which are particular to Japan. The test results reveal that E10 gasoline has no impact on exhaust emissions, engine startup time and acceleration period under the hot start condition, but a slight deterioration is observed in some test cases under the cold start condition using E10 gasolines with 50% distillation temperature (T50) level set to the upper limit of Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) K 2202. Regarding evaporative emissions, the tested vehicles shows no remarkable increase in the hot soak loss (HSL), diurnal breathing loss (DBL) and running loss (RL) testing with E10 gasolines.

Influences of Compression Ratio and Methane Additive on Combustion Characteristics in a DME-HCCI Engine

In this study, a spectroscopic method was used to measure the combustion characteristics of a test diesel engine when operated on dimethyl ether (DME) under a homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion process. A numerical analysis was made of the elementary reactions using Chemkin 4.0 to perform the calculations. The results of the analysis showed that compression ratio changes and the methane additive influenced the autoignition timing in the DME-HCCI combustion process. In the experiments, reducing the compression ratio delayed the time of the peak cylinder pressure until after top dead center, thereby increasing the crankshaft output and thermal efficiency. The addition of methane enabled the DME-HCCI engine to provide crankshaft output equivalent to that seen for diesel engine operation at a low equivalence ratio. This paper discusses these effects in reference to the experimental and calculated results.
