Volumetric and Dynamic Performance Considerations of Elastomeric Components

Elastomeric joints such as mounts and suspension bushings undergo broadband excitation and are often characterized through a cross-point dynamic stiffness measurement; yet, at frequencies above 100 Hz for many elastomeric components, the cross- and driving-point dynamic stiffness results significantly deviate. An illustrative example is developed where two different sized mounts, constructed of the same material and are shaped to achieve the same static stiffness behavior, exhibit drastically different dynamic behavior. Physical insight is provided through the development of a reduced order single-degree-of-freedom model where an internal resonance is explained. Next, a method to extract the parameters for the reduced order model from a detailed finite element bushing model is provided.

Ultra-Low NOx Emission Prediction for Heavy Duty Diesel Applications Using a Map-Based Approach

As vehicle emissions regulations become increasingly stringent, there is a growing need to accurately model aftertreatment systems to aid in the development of ultra-low NOx vehicles. Common solutions to this problem include the development of complex chemical models or expansive neural networks. This paper aims to present the development process of a simpler Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) conversion efficiency Simulink model for the purposes of modeling tail pipe NOx emission levels based on various inputs, temperature shifts and SCR locations, arrangements and/or sizes in the system. The main objective is to utilize this model to predict tail pipe NOx emissions of the EPA Federal Test Procedures for heavy-duty vehicles. The model presented within is focused exclusively on heavy-duty application compression ignition engines and their corresponding aftertreatment setups.

Turbocharger Centrifugal Compressor Casing Treatment for Improved BPF Noise Using Computational Fluid Dynamics

The conventional ported shroud recirculation casing treatment elevates narrowband noise at blade pass frequency. A new ported shroud recirculating casing treatment was implemented in Ford’s 3.5L turbo gas engine as Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH) counter measure to reduce whoosh (broadband flow noise) noise without elevating narrowband noise at blade pass frequency. The new ported shroud design incorporates holes between the main and secondary recirculating passage and a slight cross-sectional area reduction just upstream of the impeller. These design features reduce whoosh noise without elevating the first order and the sixth order tonal noise at blade pass frequency. The new ported shroud design decreases narrowband tonal noise sound pressure level by 3-6 dB in the low to mid flow region compared to the baseline design. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools were used to develop this casing treatment design.

Transmission Clutch Pressure Control System: Modeling, Controller Development and Implementation

This paper describes the modeling, controller development, and implementation of a transmission clutch pressure control system. A nonlinear analytical model for the clutch pressure control system is developed and implemented using Matlab/Simulink, and validated by experimental data. The dominant dynamics are identified via model analysis, and a linear model is derived for controller design. Openloop (feedforward) and closed loop (feedback) pressure control strategies are designed and implemented in a test setup. Experimental results show that the combined feedforward and feedback control gives superior performance as compared to feedforward control alone.

Throttle Flow Characterization

A time-efficient throttle flow data collection method is described. It uses a sonic nozzle flow bench to measure air flow as a function of throttle angle and pressure in a manner analogous to on-engine dynamometer throttle flow characterization. Opening each sonic nozzle combination, then recording throttle downstream pressure and computed nozzle flow allows data to be taken in a fraction of the time normally needed. Throttle flow modeling considerations are then discussed.

The Roles of Vehicle Seat Cushion Stiffness and Length in Child Restraint System (CRS) Performance

The objective is to determine whether responses and injury risks for pediatric occupants in child restraint systems (CRS) are affected by vehicle seat cushion stiffness and fore/aft cushion length. Eighteen sled tests were conducted using the Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standard (FMVSS) 213 frontal pulse (48 km/h). Seats from a recent model year vehicle were customized by the manufacturer with three different levels of cushion stiffness: compliant, mid-range, and stiff. Each stiffness level was quantified using ASTM D 3574-08 and all were within the realistic range of modern production seats. The usable length of each seat cushion was manipulated using foam spacers provided by the manufacturer. Two different seat lengths were examined: short (34.0 cm) and long (43.5 cm).

This paper presents some of the technical considerations that underlie the development of the master plan and the establishment of design specifications for Ohio's Highway Research Laboratory. It describes the overall features of the master plan and discusses some of the critical design features as these relate to the various tracks and other field facilities. The development of the master plan was guided by a study of the layout of existing proving grounds and by the experience gained over the years in their operations. It was guided furthermore by a set of principles relating to operational considerations, considerations of flexibility in the layout, land utilization, safety, capacity, and cost. Finally, it was guided by an indication of future research and development needs as expressed by researchers and potential sponsors in both government and industry.

The Effects of Varying Penetration Rates of L4-L5 Autonomous Vehicles on Fuel Efficiency and Mobility of Traffic Networks

With the current drive of automotive and technology companies towards producing vehicles with higher levels of autonomy, it is inevitable that there will be an increasing number of SAE level L4-L5 autonomous vehicles (AVs) on roadways in the near future. Microscopic traffic simulators that simulate realistic traffic flow are crucial in studying, understanding and evaluating the fuel usage and mobility effects of having a higher number of autonomous vehicles (AVs) in traffic under realistic mixed traffic conditions including both autonomous and non-autonomous vehicles. In this paper, L4-L5 AVs with varying penetration rates in total traffic flow were simulated using the microscopic traffic simulator Vissim on urban, mixed and freeway roadways. The roadways used in these simulations were replicas of real roadways in and around Columbus, Ohio, including an AV shuttle routes in operation.

The Effect of Ported Shroud Recirculating Casing Treatment on Turbocharger Centrifugal Compressor Acoustics

Ported shroud compressor covers recirculate low momentum air near the inducer blade tips, and the use of these devices has traditionally been confined to extending the low-flow operating region at elevated rotational speeds for compressors on compression-ignition (CI) engines. Implementation of ported shrouds on compressors for spark-ignition (SI) engines has been generally avoided due to operation at pressure ratios below the region where ported shrouds improve low-flow range, the slight efficiency penalty, and the perception of increased noise. The present study provides an experimental investigation of performance and acoustics for a SI engine turbocharger compressor both with a ported shroud and without (baseline). The objective of implementing the ported shroud was to reduce mid-flow range broadband whoosh noise of the baseline compressor over 4-12 kHz.

Studying the Effects of Lapping Process on Hypoid Gears Surface Finish and Transmission Errors

There are several geometric and working parameters, besides offset, that have minor effects on hypoid gears efficiency (i.e. spiral angle, pressure angle, lubricant type & temperature, surface finish, etc.). Some theoretical analyses of mechanical efficiency of hypoid gears show that surface finish has considerable effect on hypoid gear efficiency. This is due to a high sliding to rolling ratio in these types of gears. In this paper, a study on measuring of surface finish of both ring gear and pinion will be presented. Moreover, the effects of lapping on surface finish will be discussed. Using an accurate form-measuring machine, surface finish measurements were done on several experimentally produced hypoid gear pairs1. Despite the fact that lapping is expected to improve the surface finish, measurement results show that ring gear's surface finish becomes worse (roughness increased) after lapping while no consistent results for pinion surface finish were observed.

Start-Up Transient Vibration Analysis of a Vehicle Powertrain System Equipped with a Nonlinear Clutch Damper

The transient vibration phenomenon in a vehicle powertrain system during the start-up (or shut-down) process is studied with focus on the development and experimental validation of the nonlinear powertrain models. First, a new nonlinear four-degree-of-freedom torsional powertrain model for this transient event, under instantaneous flywheel motion input, is developed and then validated with a vehicle start-up experiment. Second, the interactions between the clutch damper and the transmission transients are established via transient metrics. Third, a single-degree-of-freedom nonlinear model, focusing on the multi-staged clutch damper, is developed and its utility is then verified.

Serpentine Belt Span Vibrations caused by Dynamic Pulley and Crankshaft Oscillations

In practical operation, serpentine belts are subjected to parametric excitation caused by tension and translation speed fluctuations from pulley rotations and crankshaft speed oscillations. Each of these excitation sources has spectral content at multiple frequencies and arbitrary phases. Stability boundaries for primary, secondary, and simultaneous primary/secondary parametric instabilities are determined analytically. The classical result that primary instability occurs when one of the excitation frequencies is close to twice a natural frequency changes as a result of multiple excitation frequencies. Unusual interactions occur for the practically important case of simultaneous primary and secondary instabilities.

Sensor Selection for Selective Clutch Fault Isolation in Automatic Transmissions Based on Degree of Fault Tolerance

Multiple clutches are engaged to achieve a specific gear ratio in an automatic transmission (AT). When an engaged clutch loses pressure during the AT operation, it is classified as a clutch stuck off fault. Automatic transmissions can enter in neutral states because of these faults and the vehicle can lose power at the wheels. Our previous work describes a systematic way of performing sensor placement analysis for diagnosis of clutch faults in automatic transmissions. In this paper, we approach the issue from the point of view similar to that of functional safety according to the ISO 26262 standard; where a transmission functional safety concept should address transitioning to a safe state in case of hazards associated with stuck off clutches.

Reducing Fuel Consumption by Using Information from Connected and Automated Vehicle Modules to Optimize Propulsion System Control

Global regulatory targets and customer demand are driving the automotive industry to improve vehicle fuel efficiency. Methods for achieving increased efficiency include improvements in the internal combustion engine and an accelerating shift toward electrification. A key enabler to maximizing the benefit from these new powertrain technologies is proper systems integration work - including developing optimized controls for the propulsion system as a whole. The next step in the evolution of improving the propulsion management system is to make use of available information not typically associated with the powertrain. Advanced driver assistance systems, vehicle connectivity systems and cloud applications can provide information to the propulsion management system that allows a shift from instantaneous optimization of fuel consumption, to optimization over a route. In the current paper, we present initial work from a project being done as part of the DOE ARPA-E NEXTCAR program.

Prediction of Broadband Noise in an Automotive Centrifugal Compressor with Three-Dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics Detached Eddy Simulations

Centrifugal compressors for automotive turbochargers must operate over wide speed and flow ranges to provide the required air pressure and mass flow rate to the intake manifold of the internal combustion engines. At a fixed rotational speed, the flow field near the inducer of the impeller becomes increasingly unstable with decreasing flow rate, as the incidence angle grows between the air flow approaching the impeller, relative to the tangent of the main impeller blades at the leading edge. Flow field measurements conducted earlier have revealed that once the incidence angle exceeds a critical value (nearly independent of rotational speed) of approximately 15°, reversed flow near the periphery (blade tips) starts penetrating upstream of the impeller, with a high tangential velocity in the direction of impeller rotation.

Predicting Lead Vehicle Velocity for Eco-Driving in the Absence of V2V Information

Accurately predicting the future behavior of the surrounding traffic, especially the velocity of the lead vehicle is important for optimizing the energy consumption and improve the safety of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs). Several studies report methods to predict short-to-mid-length lead vehicle velocity using stochastic models or other data-driven techniques, which require availability of extensive data and/or Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication. In the absence of connectivity, or in data-restricted cases, the prediction must rely only on the measured position and relative velocity of the lead vehicle at the current time. This paper proposes two velocity predictors to predict short-to-mid-length lead vehicle velocity. The first predictor is based on a Constant Acceleration (CA) with an augmented stop mode. The second one is based on a modified Enhanced Driver Model (EDM-LOS) with line-of-sight feature.

Plant Modeling and Software Verification for a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle in the EcoCAR 2 Competition

The EcoCAR 2: Plugging into the Future team at The Ohio State University is designing a Parallel-Series Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle capable of 44 miles of all-electric range. The vehicle features an 18.9-kWh lithium-ion battery pack with range extending operation in both series and parallel modes. This is made possible by a 1.8-L ethanol (E85) engine and 6-speed automated manual transmission. This vehicle is designed to drastically reduce fuel consumption, with a utility factor weighted fuel economy of 50 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (mpgge), while meeting Tier II Bin 5 emissions standards. This paper details three years of modeling and simulation development for the OSU EcoCAR 2 vehicle. Included in this paper are the processes for developing simulation platform and model requirements, plant model and soft ECU development, test development and validation, automated regression testing, and controls and calibration optimization.

Optimizing Urban Traffic Efficiency via Virtual Eco-Driving Featured by a Single Automated Vehicle

In the face of growing concerns about environmental sustainability and urban congestion, the integration of eco-driving strategies has emerged as a pivotal solution in the field of the urban transportation sector. This study explores the potential benefits of a CAV functioning as a virtual eco-driving controller in an urban traffic scenario with a group of following human-driven vehicles. A computationally inexpensive and realistic powertrain model and energy management system of the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV are developed with the field experiment data and integrated into a forward-looking vehicle simulator to implement and validate an eco-driving speed planning and energy management strategy assuming longitudinal automation. The eco-driving algorithm determines the optimal vehicle speed profile and energy management strategy.

Optimal Sizing and Control of Battery Energy Storage Systems for Hybrid Turboelectric Aircraft

Hybrid-electric gas turbine generators are considered a promising technology for more efficient and sustainable air transportation. The Ohio State University is leading the NASA University Leadership Initiative (ULI) Electric Propulsion: Challenges and Opportunities, focused on the design and demonstration of advanced components and systems to enable high-efficiency hybrid turboelectric powertrains in regional aircraft to be deployed in 2030. Within this large effort, the team is optimizing the design of the battery energy storage system (ESS) and, concurrently, developing a supervisory energy management strategy for the hybrid system to reduce fuel burn while mitigating the impact on the ESS life. In this paper, an energy-based model was developed to predict the performance of a battery-hybrid turboelectric distributed-propulsion (BHTeDP) regional jet.

Optimal Energy Management Strategy for Energy Efficiency Improvement and Pollutant Emissions Mitigation in a Range-Extender Electric Vehicle

The definition of the energy management strategy for a hybrid electric vehicle is a key element to ensure maximum energy efficiency. The ability to optimally manage the on-board energy sources, i.e., fuel and electricity, greatly affects the final energy consumption of hybrid powertrains. In the case of plug-in series-hybrid architectures, such as Range-Extender Electric Vehicles (REEVs), fuel efficiency optimization alone can result in a stressful operation of the range-extender engine with an excessively high number of start/stops. Nonetheless, reducing the number of start/stops can lead to long periods in which the engine is off, resulting in the after-treatment system temperature to drop and higher emissions to be produced at the next engine start.
