Wire Segment Error Locating Algorithm for Wiring Connection Verification Tool

Due to increasing amount of modules and customized options in commercial vehicles, it becomes more and more difficult to verify the circuit design. In this paper, a wire segment error locating algorithm is proposed to automate the exact wire segment error locating process. When a wrong connection is found by existing tool, guided by the exact description of wire segment error, this algorithm can locate exact wire segment error in the connection by searching for the one that has at least one neighboring segment from a correct connection.

Vehicle Stability Control Scheme for Rollover Prevention and Maneuverability/Lateral Stability Improvement

This paper describes vehicle stability control (VSC) scheme to prevent rollover and to improve both maneuverability and lateral stability by integrating individual chassis control modules such as electronic stability control (ESC), active front steering (AFS) and continuous damping control (CDC). The proposed VSC system consists of an upper and lower level controller. The upper level controller determines a control mode such as rollover mitigation, maneuverability and lateral stability, and it also calculate desired values for its objectives. The lower level controller determines longitudinal and lateral tire forces as inputs of each control modules such as the ESC and AFS. From the simulation results, it is shown that the proposed VSC system can prevent vehicle rollover, while at the same time improving both maneuverability and lateral stability

Understanding the Effect of Inhomogeneous Mixing on Knocking Characteristics of Iso-Octane by Using Rapid Compression Machine

As fuel injection strategies in spark-ignition (SI) engines have been diversified, inhomogeneous mixing of the fuel-air mixture can occur to varying extents during mixture preparation. In this study, we analyzed the effect of inhomogeneous mixing on the knocking characteristics of iso-octane and air mixture under a standardized fuel testing condition for research octane number (RON), based on ASTM D2699. For this purpose, we assumed that both lean spots and rich spots existed in unburned gas during compression stroke and flame propagation and calculated the thermodynamic state of the spots by using an in-house multi-zone, zero-dimensional SI engine model. Then, the ignition delay was measured over the derived thermodynamic profiles by using rapid compression machine (RCM), and we calculated ξ, the ratio of sound speed to auto-ignition propagation speed, based on Zel’dovich and Bradley’s ξ − ε theory to estimate knock intensity.

Three Types of Simulation Algorithms for Evaluating the HEV Fuel Efficiency

In regard to the evaluation of the performance of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), there are as many simulation methods as there are developers or researchers. They adopt different operational algorithms and they use diverse techniques to realize their logic. However, the relation among the various simulation methods has not been clearly defined. Thus, it is not easy to choose a method that would bring the best consequences in the most efficient way. Here, we present three types of backward-looking simulation algorithms for evaluating the fuel efficiency of a power-split HEV. Then the results and cost-effectiveness of each algorithm are analyzed using various component ratings over a representative driving mode. Based on the comparative analysis, the algorithm that uses equivalent fuel consumption is shown to be highly cost-effective. Also, an inductive or empirical base is set up with the results for a component sizing methodology using the recommended simulation.

The Study on the Optimization of Attachment Stiffness in Vehicle Body

The achievement of improved NVH performance with light weighted body and low cost is very important, but difficult job to be accomplished in vehicle development. One of the various methods for the accomplishment of this goal is the optimization of the stiffness attached to a vehicle body and chassis. It is known that sufficient stiffness at the body attachments improves the flexibility of bushing rate tuning. In this paper, the theoretical consideration and analysis tool to estimate local stiffness value quantitatively are introduced. Also, the local stiffness values at various attachment locations in trimmed body are measured. The operational forces at body attachments are estimated through the TPA (Transfer Path Analysis). The suitability of attachment stiffness is judged based on the required NVH target to attain the optimal attachment stiffness in vehicle body.

Systematic Automotive Wiring Guideline Based on Coupling Theory

This paper introduces a systematic wiring guideline which includes coupling noise calculation, wire layout design, and wire type selection methodologies. The coupling theory between wires has been introduced long time ago but it was not successfully applied to real automotive wiring design due to the complexity in the theory such as large number of parameters and many different conditions in automotive wiring environment. In this paper, the complexity is reduced by separating physical parameters and electrical parameters and identifying controllable parameters and given parameters. This paper first introduces parameters which are used in the coupling equations and automotive wiring design, then the coupling noise calculation method which uses the coupling equations is introduced. The systematic automotive wiring guideline which prevents noise problem in various design stage such as system filter design, wire layout design, wire type selection is introduced.

Study on the Effects of the In-Cylinder EGR Stratification on NOx and Soot Emissions in Diesel Engines

Much research has been devoted to reducing NOx and soot emissions simultaneously in diesel engines. The low temperature combustion (LTC) concept has the potential to reduce these emissions at the same time, but it has limitations to its commercialization. In-cylinder EGR stratification is another combustion concept meant to reduce both types of emissions simultaneously using non-uniform in-cylinder EGR gas distribution. The EGR stratification concept uses a locally high EGR region of the in-cylinder so that the emissions can be reduced without increasing the overall EGR rate. In this study, the EGR stratification concept was improved with a CFD-based analysis. First, a two-step piston was developed to maximize the stratified EGR effect. Then, the feasibility of combustion and emission control by stratified EGR was evaluated under cases of artificially distributed EGR stratification and conventional diesel engine conditions.

Study on Auto-Ignition Characteristics of High Pressure Methane Jet for Compression Ignition Engine Application

Natural gas has been considered as an alternative fuel for a heavy duty diesel engine with its lower pollutant and carbon dioxide emissions than its counterpart. However, due to the high auto-ignition temperature of methane, this alternate fuel has been mainly used in spark-ignited engine with relatively lower compression ratio, losing full potential of achieving high efficiency. To overcome these limitations, high-pressure direct injection of the natural gas in a compression ignition engine has been proposed, and there have been several attempts to understand physical behaviors and ignition of methane jet. In this study, auto-ignition characteristics of high-pressure methane jet were investigated both through the experiment and the multi-zone modeling to suggest the applicability to such engine.

Study of a Stratification Effect on Engine Performance in Gasoline HCCI Combustion by Using the Multi-zone Method and Reduced Kinetic Mechanism

A gasoline homogeneous charged compression ignition (HCCI) called the controlled auto ignition (CAI) engine is an alternative to conventional gasoline engines with higher efficiency and lower emission levels. However, noise and vibration are currently major problems in the CAI engine. The problems result from fast burning speeds during combustion, because in the CAI engine combustion is controlled by auto-ignition rather than the flame. Thus, the ignition delay of the local mixture has to vary according to the location in the combustion chamber to avoid noise and vibration. For making different ignition delays, stratification of temperature or mixing ratio was tested in this study. In charge stratification, which determines the difference between the start of combustion among charges with different properties, two kinds of mixtures with different properties flow into two intake ports.

Steering Wheel Torque Control of Steer-by-Wire System for Steering Feel

This paper proposes a reference steering wheel torque map and a torque tracking algorithm via steer-by-wire to achieve the targeted steering feel. The reference steering wheel torque map is designed using the measurement data of rack force and steering characteristic of a target performance of the vehicle at transition steering test. Since the target performance of the vehicle is only tested in nominal road condition, various road conditions such as disturbances and tire-road friction are not considered. Hence, the measurement data of the rack force that reflects the road conditions in the reference steering wheel torque map have been used. The rack force is the net force which consists of tire aligning moment, road friction force and normal force on the tire kingpin axis. A motor and a magnetorheological damper are used as actuators to generate the desired steering feel using the torque tracking algorithm.

Stability Monitoring Algorithm with a Combined Slip Tire Model for Maximized Cornering Speed of High-Speed Autonomous Driving

This paper presents a stability monitoring algorithm with a combined slip tire model for maximized cornering speed of high-speed autonomous driving. It is crucial to utilize the maximum tire force with maintaining a grip driving condition in cornering situations. The model-free cruise controller has been designed to track the desired acceleration. The lateral motion has been regulated by the sliding mode controller formulated with the center of percussion. The controllers are suitable for minimizing the behavior errors. However, the high-level algorithm is necessary to check whether the intended motion is inside of the limit boundaries. In extreme diving conditions, the maximum tire force is limited by physical constraints. A combined slip tire model has been applied to monitor vehicle stability. In previous studies, vehicle stability was evaluated only by vehicle acceleration.

Skid Steering Based Maneuvering of Robotic Vehicle with Articulated Suspension

This paper describes a driving control algorithm based on skid steering for a Robotic Vehicle with Articulated Suspension (RVAS). The driving control algorithm consists of four parts; speed controller for tracking of the desired speeds, yaw rate controller which computes a yaw moment input to track desired yaw rates, longitudinal tire force distribution which determines an optimal desired longitudinal tire force and wheel torque controller which determines a wheel torque command at each wheel to keep slip ratio at each wheel below a limit value as well as track the desired tire force. Longitudinal and vertical tire force estimators are designed for optimal tire force distribution and wheel slip control. The dynamic model of RVAS for simulation study is validated using vehicle test data.

Rear-Wheel Steering Control for Enhanced Maneuverability of Vehicles

This paper proposes a rear-wheel steering control method that can modify and improve the vehicle lateral response without tire model and parameter. The proposed control algorithm is a combination of steady-state and transient control. The steady state control input is designed to modify steady-state yaw rate response of the vehicle, i.e. understeer gradient of the vehicle. The transient control input is a feedback control to improve the transient response when the vehicle lateral behavior builds up. The control algorithm has been investigated via computer simulations. Compared to classical control methods, the proposed algorithm shows good vehicle lateral response such as small overshoot and fast response. Specifically, the proposed algorithm can alleviate stair-shaped response of the lateral acceleration.

Performance and Exhaust Emission in Spark Ignition Engine Fueled with Methanol-Butane Mixture

To improve the cold startability of methanol, methanol-butane mixed fuel was experimented. Engine performance and exhaust emissions are obtained with methanol-butane mixed fuel. These characteristics are compared with those of methanol and gasoline. The mixing ratios of methanol and butane are 50:50 (M50), 80:20 (M80), and 90:10 (M90) based on the calorific value. As a result, M90 produces more power than gasoline and more or less than methanol depending on the engine speed and the excess air ratio. Brake horse power of M90 is higher than that of gasoline by 5 - 10 %, and brake specific fuel consumption is smaller than that of gasoline by 17 % to the maximum based on the calorific value. NOx emission concentrations for M90 are lower than those for gasoline and higher than those for methanol because of the effect of butane, CO emission concentrations are somewhat lower than those for methanol and gasoline.

Performance Design of Low Temperature Condenser for Waste Heat Recovery System

The optimum design process of the low-temperature condenser of a dual-loop waste heat recovery system with Rankine steam cycles for improving the fuel efficiency of gasoline automobiles has been investigated. The waste heat recovery system consists of a high-temperature (HT) loop in which water as the HT working fluid recovers waste heat only from the exhaust gas of about 700°C and a low-temperature (LT) loop in which a refrigerant as the LT working fluid recovers heat dissipation from the HT loop, and waste heat from the engine coolant of relatively low temperature. The low temperature condenser plays a role to dissipate heat from the system by condensing the low temperature loop working fluid sufficiently.

Numerical Study on Wall Impingement and Film Formation in Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition Condition

Since the amount of emitted CO2 is directly related to car fuel economy, attention is being drawn to DISI (Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition) engines, which have better fuel economy than conventional gasoline engines. However, it has been a problem that the rich air-fuel mixtures associated with fuel films during cold starts due to spray impingement produce particulate matter (PM). In predicting soot formation, it is important to predict the mixture field precisely. Thus, accurate spray and film models are a prerequisite of the soot model. The previous models were well matched with low-speed collision conditions, such as those of diesel engines, which have a relatively high ambient pressure and long traveling distances. Droplets colliding at low velocities have an order of magnitude of kinetic energy similar to that of the sum of the surface tension energy and the critical energy at which the splash occurs.

Model Validation of the Chevrolet Volt 2016

Validation of a vehicle simulation model of the Chevrolet Volt 2016 was conducted. The Chevrolet Volt 2016 is equipped with the new “Voltec” extended-range propulsion system introduced into the market in 2016. The second generation Volt powertrain system operates in five modes, including two electric vehicle modes and three extended-range modes. Model development and validation were conducted using the test data performed on the chassis dynamometer set in a thermal chamber of Argonne National Laboratory’s Advanced Powertrain Research Facility. First, the components of the vehicle, such as the engine, motor, battery, wheels, and chassis, were modeled, including thermal aspects based on the test data. For example, engine efficiency changes dependent on the coolant temperature, or chassis heating or air-conditioning operations according to the ambient and cabin temperature, were applied.

Knock Prediction of Two-Stage Ignition Fuels with Modified Livengood-Wu Integration Model by Cool Flame Elimination Method

Livengood-Wu integration model is acknowledged as a relatively simple but fairly accurate autoignition prediction method which has been widely recognized as a methodology predicting knock occurrence of a spark-ignition (SI) engine over years. Fundamental idea of the model is that the chemical reactivity of fuel under a certain thermodynamic test condition can be represented by inverse of the acquired ignition delay. However, recent studies show that the predictability of the model seems to deteriorate if the tested fuel exhibits negative temperature coefficient (NTC) behavior which is primarily caused by two-stage ignition characteristics. It is convincing that the cool flame exothermicity during the first ignition stage is a major cause that limits the prediction capability of the integration model, therefore a new ignition delay concept based on cool flame elimination is introduced in order to minimize the thermal effect of the cool flame.

Integrated Control of In-Wheel Motor and Electronic Limited Slip Differential for Lateral Stability and Maneuverability

This paper presents an integrated control of in-wheel motor (IWM) and electronic limited slip differential (eLSD) to enhance the vehicle lateral stability and maneuverability. The two actuators are utilized in the proposed controller to achieve separate purposes. The IWM controller is designed to modify the understeer gradient for enhanced handling characteristic and maneuverability. The eLSD controller is devised to improve the lateral stability to prevent oversteer in a severe maneuver. The proposed controller consists of a supervisor, upper-level controller and lower-level controller. The supervisor determines a target motion based on a target understeer gradient for IWM control and a yaw rate reference for eLSD control. The upper-level controller generates a desired yaw moment for the target motion. In the lower-level controller, the desired yaw moment is converted to the control inputs for IWMs in the two front wheels and eLSD at the rear axle.

Improvement of Knock Onset Determination Based on Supervised Deep Learning Using Data Filtering

Regulations regarding vehicles’ CO2 emissions are continuing to become stricter due to global warming. The CO2 regulations urge automobile manufacturers to develop gasoline engines with improved efficiency; however, the main obstacle to the improvement is the knock phenomenon in spark-ignition engines. If knock is predicted, the efficiency potential can be maximized in an engine by applying modest spark timing. Several research regarding knock prediction modeling have been conducted, and typically Livengood-Wu integral model is used to predict the knock occurrence. For the prediction, knock onset should be determined on a given pressure signal of given knock cycles for establishing the 0D ignition delay model. Several methodologies for knock onset determination have been developed because checking all the knock onset position by hand is impossible considering the breadth of data sets.
