The Breaking Torsion Test and Quasi-Static Finite Element Simulations of the Rzeppa Type Constant Velocity Joint under a Large Joint Angle

2021-04-06
2021-01-0706
The breaking torque is an essential property that identifies the strength of driveshafts under high torque loads. In the breaking torsion test, the constant velocity joint of the driveshafts is usually loaded slowly at a very slow rotating speed under a specific joint angle until it breaks. Under different joint angles, the Rzeppa type constant velocity joint, namely ball joints (BJ), will break at different positions and with different torques. Common results of fracture position include the shaft of the outer race, the shell of the outer race, and the cage column. Simultaneously, the plastic deformation caused by compressive stress occurs at the specific position of the ball track and the cage. In order to analyze the failure reason of the ball joint under a larger joint angle, the quasi-static finite element simulations and test methods are used to analyze the damage caused by stress distribution based on material properties.

According to the formation method of the rotor tooth profile, the calculation method of the inner rotor tooth profile is introduced, and the meshing characteristics of the inner and outer rotors are analyzed. On this basis, a calculation method for the displacement and instantaneous flow rate of the gerotor pump with multi-arc combined profile is proposed. In addition, a calculation model of the flow field characteristics of the gerotor pump with multi-arc combined profile is established, and the validity of the model is verified by experiments. Based on the model of traditional single-arc gerotor pump and the model of the gerotor pump with multi-arc combined profile, the flow rate, internal flow velocity, pressure distribution and gas volume fraction distribution under different working conditions are calculated respectively.

2021-01-0663
A non-linear viscoelastic constitutive model composed of Mooney-Rivlin model and multiple Maxwell models is used to calculate the high frequency dynamic characteristics of rubber mounts. The equivalent mechanical model of the rubber vibration mount is established and the difference between the drive-point dynamic stiffness and the cross-point dynamic stiffness is analyzed. The analysis shows that the use of the cross-point dynamic characteristic test method can eliminate the influence of the additional inertial force in the test, which is suitable for rubber mounts’ high-frequency dynamic characteristics test; at the same time, a finite element model of the rubber mount is built to analyze its cross- point dynamic stiffness and drive-point dynamic stiffness. The analysis results are compared with the experimental results which verifies the finite element model and the correctness of the mechanical model.

2024-01-2412
A set of enthalpy difference test equipment is set up to test flow and heat exchange performance of chillers. The empirical correlations for the convective heat transfer coefficients on the coolant side and the refrigerant side are obtained by fitting the test data, and a two-particle lumped parameter model of the chiller is established. Based on this, the heat exchange performance of the chiller under different operating conditions is given. The effects of herringbone corrugated plate parameters, including angle, pitch, and depth, on flow and heat exchange performance of chillers under different flow rates are further studied. Using the Wilson plot method in test design, the thermal resistance of convective heat transfer on each side is separated from the total thermal resistance to calculate the convective heat transfer coefficient.

As an important vibration damping element in automobile, the rubber mount can effectively reduce the vibration transmitted from the engine to the frame. In this study, a method of parameters identification of Mooney-Rivlin model by using surrogate model was proposed to more accurately describe the mechanical behavior of mount. Firstly, taking the rubber mount as the research object, the stiffness measurement was carried out. And then the calculation model of the rubber mount was established with Mooney-Rivlin model. Latin hypercube sampling was used to obtain the force and displacement calculation data in different directions. Then, the parameters of the Mooney-Rivlin model were taken as the design variables. And the error of the measured force-displacement curve and the calculated force-displacement curve was taken as the system response. Two surrogate models, the response surface model and the back-propagation neural network, were established.

2021-01-0654
For traditional rubber isolators, the dynamic stiffness increases significantly with the increase of excitation frequency and will have a peak value, which is called "internal resonance" phenomenon. This paper investigates a double-isolation rubber isolator, which consist of two rubber bushings and additional mass. It can be applied to improve the NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) performance at high frequency of electric vehicles. The equivalent mechanical model and mathematical model of the double-isolation rubber isolator are established. Then, the finite element analysis (FEA) model is established, and we calculate the drive point dynamic stiffness and cross point dynamic stiffness of the inner bushing, outer bushing and the entire double-isolation rubber isolator.

2022-01-0177
The silicone oil clutch is a device that uses the viscous shear force of silicone oil to transmit torque. Due to the difference in the rotational speed of the driving and driven parts, the silicone oil inside the clutch generates much heat, and the silicone oil temperature increases, resulting in a decrease in viscosity. Therefore, excellent thermal performance is necessary for silicone oil clutch to ensure torque transmission ability. This paper proposes a modeling method for analyzing the thermal performance of a silicone oil clutch. Firstly, the temperature measurement test for the silicone oil clutch is carried out by using wireless temperature measurement equipment. The driven speed, silicone oil temperature, and the temperature of different areas of the clutch shell are measured under different driving speeds.

2021-01-0662
There is the possibility of decoupler’s impact noise in hydraulic engine mount (HEM) with a free decoupler, but there is little research on this aspect. As for how to solve the problem of decoupler’s impact noise, most of the papers are only improved through trial and error. This article uses three HEMs with different decoupler plates and cages as the research object for the experiment. First, calculate the contact force between the decoupler plate and cage of the HEM through the finite element method, to determine whether the decoupler’s impact noise problem will occur. Then design the bench test of the abnormal noise of the HEMs to verify the conclusion obtained by the calculation of the contact force. Next, deduce the relationship between the transmitted force at the chassis side of the HEM and the impact force of the decoupler, and propose a test method for evaluating the decoupler’s impact noise based on the transmitted force at the chassis side of the HEM.

2022-01-0282
The dynamic characteristics of hydraulic damping rubber isolators (such as hydraulic bushing and hydraulic mount) are related to excitation amplitude and frequency. Based on the lumped parameter model of hydraulic damping rubber isolator, a unified linear model of complex stiffness is derived and its deficiency is pointed out. Based on the derived linear model, this paper considers the nonlinear damping of inertia channel and the nonlinear stiffness of the upper chamber of the hydraulic damping rubber isolator, so as to establish a new nonlinear model, which can reflect the amplitude and frequency dependence of the dynamic characteristics of the hydraulic damping rubber isolator. Finally, the nonlinear model is used to analyze the dynamic response of hydraulic damping rubber isolator under harmonic excitation and random excitation respectively, and the results are compared with the test results.

2024-01-2674
A liquid-cooled plate is an important component for cooling batteries inside a battery package system. The structure of the liquid-cooling plate significantly affects the temperature conditions of power batteries and the energy consumption of the liquid-cooling system. However, there is a lack of precise knowledge regarding the specific factors that contribute to these impacts. In this study, the influence of structural parameters of flow channel on the heat dissipation performance is studied to solve above problems. A test bench for measuring battery pack cooling performances was built, and pressure drop of liquid-cooled plate and maximum temperature of battery were measured. A CFD model for liquid-cooled plate performance calculations was developed. Using the established model, pressure drop, and maximum temperature were calculated. The measured data are compared with the calculated date, which validate the proposed model.

2022-01-0258
Uniaxial fatigue tests of rubber dumbbell specimens under different mean and amplitude of strain are carried out. An Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) model optimized by Dragonfly Algorithm (DA) is proposed to predict the fatigue life of rubber based on measured rubber fatigue life data. Mean and amplitude of strain and measured rubber fatigue life are taken as input variables and output variables respectively in DA-ELM model. For comparison, genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are used to optimize ELM parameters, and GA-ELM and PSO-ELM models are established. The comparison results show that DA-ELM model performs better in predicting the fatigue life of rubber with least dispersion. The coefficients of determination for the training set and test set are 99.47% and 99.12%, respectively. In addition, a life prediction model equivalent strain amplitude as damage parameter is introduced to further highlight the superiority of DA-ELM model.

2021-01-0979
This paper designs the important components and structure of the integrated electro-hydraulic brake system (I-EHB). Firstly, the simplified linear system is modeled, and the transfer function without considering the nonlinear disturbance such as system friction is derived, and the correctness of the linear system is preliminarily verified by AMESim. Then set up the I-EHB system test bench, and use the Stribeck friction model to identify the friction torque parameters in the static and kinetic friction stages of the system to obtain a more accurate friction model. Finally, based on the I-EHB system model of friction disturbance, a pressure-speed-current three-loop cascade PID controller is designed, and a feedforward controller based on the system model is added to form the control structure of “pressure feedforward compensation + pressure-speed-current closed-loop cascade PID”.

Tuned mass dampers (TMD) are frequently used in vehicles to resolve vibration and interior booming noise issues arising from powertrain's vibration and road excitation. This paper describes a driveshaft NVH case study in which analysis and test were used to solve the NVH problem. A TMD simulation package that utilizes a database of measured elastomeric material propertied. This facilitates the designing of optimized damper systems for a wide variety of vehicle applications. The simulation software takes into account frequency effects on elastomer properties while designing dampers. And the approach has proven to accurately predict performance in vehicles prior to manufacture. Rules of thumb for TMD design are discussed including locations for placement of dampers in automotive structures, determining the needed mass, and measurements and simulations that can greatly improve the success and reducing time-cost for TMD design.

2024-01-2895
A road test on semi-trailers is carried out, and accelerations of some characteristic points on the braking system, axles, and truck body is measured, also brake pressure and noise around the support frame is acquired. The measured data was analyzed to determine the causes of the brake noise, and the mechanism of the noise of the drum brake of semi-trailers during low-speed braking was investigated. The following conclusions are obtained: (1) Brake noise of the drum brake of the semi-trailer at low-frequency is generated from vibrations of the brake shoes, axle, and body, and the vibration frequency is close to 2nd natural frequency of the axle. (2) Brake noise is generated from stick-slip motion between the brake shoes and the brake drum, where the relative motion between the brake drum and the brake shoes is changed alternately with sliding and sticking, resulting in sudden changes in acceleration and shock vibration.

2021-01-0677
During the operation of the automotive drive shaft system, the ball-type universal joint will generate a secondary torque, which will affect the torque transmission of the automotive drive shaft system and the comfort of the automobile. Under the influence of the internal friction of the ball-type universal joint, the secondary torque generates a torque component on the plane where the working angle is located and the plane perpendicular to the working angle. To effectively calculate and analyze the secondary torque, this paper establishes a multi-body dynamic model of the ball-type universal joint. At the same time, the secondary torque of the ball-type universal joint is measured by the NVH multi-function test bench, which verifies the validity of the multi-body dynamic model. In order to improve the analysis efficiency of the secondary torque, a proxy model of the secondary torque of the ball-type universal joint is established based on the multi-body dynamic model.

Analysis and optimization for generated axial force of Adjustable Angular Roller tripod joint

2024-04-09
2024-01-2887
The tripod constant velocity joint (CVJ) has been widely used in mechanical systems due to its strong load-bearing capacity, high efficiency, and reliability. It has become the most commonly used plunging-type CVJ in automotive drive-shaft. A generated axial force (GAF) with a third-order characteristic of driven shaft speed is caused by the internal friction and motion characteristics in a tripod joint. The large GAF has a negative impact on the NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) characteristics of automobiles, and this issue is particularly prominent in new energy vehicles. A multi-body dynamic model of the Adjustable Angular Roller (AAR) tripod CVJ is developed to calculate and analyze the GAF. To describe the internal motion of the AAR tripod CVJ, the contact interactions between the roller and the track or the trunnion were modeled using non-linear equivalent spring-damping models for contact collision forces and modified Coulomb friction model for friction.

2022-01-0272
In order to enhance the efficiency of durability testing of automobile parts, a time-frequency domain accelerated editing method of road load time series of rubber mount on powertrain was discussed. Based on Stockwell Transform method and Accumulative Power Spectral Density, a new time-frequency domain accelerated editing method (ST-APSD) was proposed. The accumulative power spectral density was obtained by ST of the load time series signal of automobile powertrain rubber mounting force which is acquired by the real vehicle in the test field. Based on the accumulative power spectral density, the threshold value was proposed to identify and delete the small damage load fragments, and then the acceleration spectrum was obtained.
