Well-to-Wheels Emissions of Greenhouse Gases and Air Pollutants of Dimethyl Ether from Natural Gas and Renewable Feedstocks in Comparison with Petroleum Gasoline and Diesel in the United States and Europe

Dimethyl ether (DME) is an alternative to diesel fuel for use in compression-ignition engines with modified fuel systems and offers potential advantages of efficiency improvements and emission reductions. DME can be produced from natural gas (NG) or from renewable feedstocks such as landfill gas (LFG) or renewable natural gas from manure waste streams (MANR) or any other biomass. This study investigates the well-to-wheels (WTW) energy use and emissions of five DME production pathways as compared with those of petroleum gasoline and diesel using the Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Transportation (GREET®) model developed at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL).

Washcoat Technology and Precious Metal Loading Study Targeting the California LEV MDV2 Standard

Meeting the California Medium-Duty truck emissions standards presents a significant challenge to automotive engineers due to the combination of sustained high temperature exhaust conditions, high flow rates and relatively high engine out emissions. A successful catalyst for an exhaust treatment system must be resistant to high temperature deactivation, maintain cold start performance and display high three-way conversion efficiencies under most operating conditions. This paper describes a catalyst technology and precious metal loading study targeting a California Medium-Duty truck LEV (MDV2) application. At the same time a direction is presented for optimizing toward the Federal Tier 1 standard through reduction of precious metal use. The paper identifies catalytic formulations for a twin substrate, 1.23 L medium-coupled converter. Two are used per vehicle, mounted 45 cm downstream of each manifold on a 5.7 L V8 engine.

Utilizing Public Vehicle Travel Survey Data Sets for Vehicle Driving Pattern and Fuel Economy Studies

Realistic vehicle fuel economy studies require real-world vehicle driving behavior data along with various factors affecting the fuel consumption. Such studies require data with various vehicles usages for prolonged periods of time. A project dedicated to collecting such data is an enormous and costly undertaking. Alternatively, we propose to utilize two publicly available vehicle travel survey data sets. One is Puget Sound Travel Survey collected using GPS devices in 484 vehicles between 2004 and 2006. Over 750,000 trips were recorded with a 10-second time resolution. The data were obtained to study travel behavior changes in response to time-and-location-variable road tolling. The other is Atlanta Regional Commission Travel Survey conducted for a comprehensive study of the demographic and travel behavior characteristics of residents within the study area.

Unified Power-Based Vehicle Fuel Consumption Model Covering a Range of Conditions

Previously fuel consumption on a drive cycle has been shown to be proportional to traction work, with an offset for powertrain losses. This model had different transfer functions for different drive cycles, performance levels, and applied powertrain technologies. Following Soltic it is shown that if fuel usage and traction work are both expressed in terms of cycle average power, a wide range of drive cycles collapse to a single transfer function, where cycle average traction power captures the drive cycle and the vehicle size. If this transfer function is then normalized by weight, i.e. by working in cycle average power/weight (P/W), a linear model is obtained where the offset is mainly a function of rated performance and applied technology. A final normalization by rated power/weight as the primary performance metric further collapses the data to express the cycle average fuel power/rated power ratio as a function of cycle average traction power/rated power ratio.

Unified Power-Based Analysis of Combustion Engine and Battery Electric Vehicle Energy Consumption

The previously developed power-based fuel consumption theory for Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles (ICEV) is extended to Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV). The main difference between the BEV model structure and the ICEV is the bi-directional character of traction motors and batteries. A traction motor model was developed as a bi-linear function of positive and negative traction power. Another difference is that the accessories and cabin heating are powered directly from the battery, and not from the powertrain. The resulting unified model for ICEV and BEV energy consumption has linear terms proportional to positive and negative traction power, accessory power, and overhead, in varying proportions. Compared to the ICEV, the BEV powertrain has a high marginal efficiency and low overhead. As a result, BEV energy consumption data under a wide range of driving conditions are mainly proportional to net traction power, with only a small offset.

Understanding of Intake Cam Phasing Effects on the Induction and Fuel-Air Mixing in a DISI Engine

Variable Cam Timing (VCT) has been proven to be a very effective method in PFI (Port Fuel Injection) engines for improved fuel economy and combustion stability, and reduced emissions. In DISI (Direct Injection Spark Ignition) engines, VCT is applied in both stratified-charge and homogeneous charge operating modes. In stratified-charge mode, VCT is used to reduce NOx emission and improve combustion stability. In homogeneous charge mode, the function of VCT is similar to that in PFI engines. In DISI engine, however, the VCT also affects the available fuel-air mixing time. This paper focuses on VCT effects on the induction process and the fuel-air mixing homogeneity in a DISI engine. The detailed induction process with large exhaust-intake valve overlap has been investigated with CFD modeling. Seven characteristic sub-processes during the induction have been identified. The associated mechanism for each sub-process is also investigated.

Transient Non-linear FEA and TMF Life Estimates of Cast Exhaust Manifolds

A transient nonlinear Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method has been developed to simulate the inelastic deformation and estimate the thermo-mechanical fatigue life of cast iron and cast steel exhaust manifolds under dynamometer test conditions. The FEA uses transient heat transfer analysis to simulate the thermal loads on the manifold, and includes the fasteners, gasket and portion of the cylinder head. The analysis incorporates appropriate elastic-plastic and creep material models. It is shown that the creep deformation is the most single critical component of inelastic deformation for cast iron manifold ratcheting, gasket sealing, and crack initiation. The predicted transient temperature field and manifold deformation of the FEA model compares exceptionally well with two experimental tests for a high silicon-molybdenum exhaust manifold.

Transient NOx Emission Reduction Using Exhaust Oxygen Concentration Based Control for a Diesel Engine

Meeting EPA Tier 2 emission standards presents a great challenge to engine manufacturers. In addition to having an actively controlled aftertreatment system, engine-out NOx emission needs to be reduced significantly to achieve regulatory compliance. Using advanced combustion methods, such as low temperature combustion and/or HCCI, has been shown to reduce engine-out NOx emissions. However, all this new combustion technologies are yet to permeate down into any production system. In current practice, large amount of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) into the cylinders is widely used to reduce emissions. However, NOx emission from transient engine operation still constitutes a very large percentage of the total NOx output during a Federal Test Procedure (FTP) cycle and has yet to be adequately addressed. Currently, the EGR flow is controlled using the intake mass airflow (MAF) measurement.

The Use of Low Viscosity Oils to Improve Fuel Economy in Light Duty Diesel Engines

Historically, fuel cost conscious customers have tended to purchase diesel passenger cars. However, with increasing competition from alternative fuels and lean burn and direct injection gasoline fuelled engines, diesel engined vehicles currently face tough challenges from the point of fuel economy and emissions. In gasoline engines, low viscosity friction modified oils have demonstrated their potential for reducing internal engine friction and thus improving fuel economy, without adversely effecting engine durability. These fuel economy improvements have led to the introduction of such a low viscosity friction modified 5W-30 oil as the initial and service fill for the majority of Ford products sold in Europe. The trend towards even lower viscosities continues. To assess the potential benefits and issues of moving to 5W-20 in diesel engines, a short pilot study has been conducted using a Ford 1.8l direct injection diesel engine.

The Effects of Load Control with Port Throttling at Idle- Measurements and Analyses

An experimental and analytical study was conducted to investigate the effects of load control with port throttling on stability and fuel consumption at idle. With port throttling, the pressure in the intake port increases during the valve-closed period due to flow past the throttle. If the pressure in the port recovers to ambient before the valve overlap period, back flow into the intake system from the cylinder is eliminated. This allows increased valve overlap to be used without increasing the residual mass fraction in the cylinder. Results showed that, with high valve overlap and port throttling, idle stability and fuel consumption can be maintained at values associated with low overlap in a conventionally throttled engine. However, implementation of this concept in production is regarded to require precision-fit and balanced port throttles, an external vacuum pump for vacuum systems support, and revision of the PCV system.

The Effect of Fuel Injection on the Velocity Fluctuations in the Bowl of a DISI Engine

Swirl plane Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements were performed in a single-cylinder optically accessible gasoline direct injection (DISI) engine using a borescope introduced through the spark plug hole. This allowed the use of a contoured piston and the visualization of the flow field in and around the piston bowl. The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) was fixed at 90 kPa and the engine speed was varied in increments of 250 rpm from 750 rpm to 2000 rpm. Images were taken from 270° to 320° bTDC of compression at 10° intervals to study the evolution of the velocity fluctuations. Measurements were performed with and without fuel injection to study its effect on the in-cylinder flow fields. Fuel was injected at 10 MPa and 5 MPa. The 2-D spatial mean velocities of individual flow fields and their decompositions were averaged over 100 cycles and used to investigate the effects of engine speed and image timing on the flow field.

Study on the Interaction of Clearance Flow and Shock Wave in a Turbine Nozzle

Radial flow Variable Nozzle Turbine (VNT) enables better matching between the turbocharger and engine. At partial loading or low-end engine operating points, the nozzle vane opening of the VNT is decreased to achieve higher turbine efficiency and transient response, which is a benefit for engine fuel consumption and emission. However, under certain small nozzle opening conditions (such as nozzle brake and low-end operating points), strong shock waves and strong nozzle clearance flow are generated. Consequently, strong rotor-stator interaction between turbine nozzle and impeller is the key factor of the impeller high cycle fatigue and failure. In present paper, flow visualization experiment is carried out on a linear turbine nozzle. The turbine nozzle is designed to have single-sided clearance, and the Schlieren visualization method is used to describe the formation and development process of clearance flow and shock wave under different clearance and expansion ratio configurations.

Reliability-Based Design Optimization with Model Bias and Data Uncertainty

Reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) has been widely used to obtain a reliable design via an existing CAE model considering the variations of input variables. However, most RBDO approaches do not consider the CAE model bias and uncertainty, which may largely affect the reliability assessment of the final design and result in risky design decisions. In this paper, the Gaussian Process Modeling (GPM) approach is applied to statistically correct the model discrepancy which is represented as a bias function, and to quantify model uncertainty based on collected data from either real tests or high-fidelity CAE simulations. After the corrected model is validated by extra sets of test data, it is integrated into the RBDO formulation to obtain a reliable solution that meets the overall reliability targets while considering both model and parameter uncertainties.

Redesign of an Exhaust Manifold Outlet Fastener Using Robust Design Techniques

An L16 orthogonal array parameter Design of Experiment (DOE) evaluated six design parameters of the mating thread interface between the exhaust manifold outlet flange and jointing stainless steel fastener. The objective of this study was to identify optimal parameters for the redesign the thread interface by ensuring 100% seating of the fastener into the manifold flange (here after referred to as stud seating). Since the current fastener and manifold outlet flange interface threads do not always achieve the design objectives, due in part to a form of abrasive wear, consideration was given to develop a testing strategy that would quantify the amount of remaining thread engagement for a given stud length. This testing strategy ensured that the control parameters considered in this experiment would reveal main effects and interactions between the stud and tapped hole threads thus providing the necessary parameters for the redesign on the joint threads.

Quantitative Analysis of Gasoline Direct Injection Engine Emissions for the First 5 Firing Cycles of Cold Start

A series of cold start experiments using a 2.0 liter gasoline turbocharged direct injection (GTDI) engine with custom controls and calibration were carried out using gasoline and iso-pentane fuels, to obtain the cold start emissions profiles for the first 5 firing cycles at an ambient temperature of 22°C. The exhaust gases, both emitted during the cold start firing and emitted during the cranking process right after the firing, were captured, and unburned hydrocarbon emissions (HC), CO, and CO2 on a cycle-by-cycle basis during an engine cold start were analyzed and quantified. The HCs emitted during gasoline-fueled cold starts was found to reduce significantly as the engine cycle increased, while CO and CO2 emissions were found to stay consistent for each cycle. Crankcase ventilation into the intake manifold through the positive-crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve system was found to have little effect on the emissions results.

Pricing of Renewable Gasoline and Its Impact on Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Planning for Automakers and Electricity Generators

With increasing evidence for climate change in response to greenhouse gasses (GHG) emitted by human activities, pressure is growing to reduce fuel consumption via increased vehicle efficiency and to replace fossil fuels with renewable fuels. While real-world experience with bio-ethanol and a growing body of research on many other renewable fuel pathways provide some guidance as to the cost of renewable transportation fuel, there has been little work comparing that cost to alternative means for achieving equivalent GHG reductions. In earlier work, we developed an optimization model that allowed the transportation and electricity generation sectors to work separately or jointly to achieve GHG reduction targets, and showed that cooperation can significantly reduce the society cost of GHG reductions.

Pressure Reactive Piston Technology Investigation and Development for Spark Ignition Engines

Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) technology has long been recognized as a method of improving Spark Ignition (SI) engine fuel economy. The Pressure Reactive Piston (PRP) assembly features a two-piece piston, with a piston crown and separate piston skirt which enclose a spring set between them. The unique feature is that the upper piston reacts to the cylinder pressure, accommodating rapid engine load changes passively. This mechanism effectively limits the peak pressures at high loads without an additional control device, while allowing the engine to operate at high compression ratio during low load conditions. Dynamometer engine testing showed that Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) improvement of the PRP over the conventional piston ranged from 8 to 18 % up to 70% load. Knock free full load operation was also achieved. The PRP equipped engine combustion is characterized by reverse motion of the piston crown near top dead center and higher thermal efficiency.

Powertrain Efficiency in the US Fleet on Regulatory Drive Cycles and with Advanced Technologies

The drive cycle average powertrain efficiency of current US vehicles is studied by applying a first principles model to the EPA Test Car List database. The largest group of vehicles has naturally aspirated engines and six speed planetary automatic transmissions, and defines the base technology level. For this group the best cycle average powertrain efficiency is independent of vehicle size and is achieved by the lowest power-to-weight vehicles. For all segments of the EPA test, the fuel required per unit of vehicle work (the inverse of powertrain efficiency), is found to increase linearly with a basic powertrain matching parameter. The parameter is (D/M)(n/V), where D is engine displacement, M vehicle mass, and (n/V) the top gear engine speed over the vehicle speed. The fuel consumption penalties in the City segments due to powertrain warm-up, aftertreatment warm-up, stop-and-go operation, and power-off operation are estimated.

Parametric Simulation of Significant Design and Operating Alternatives Affecting the Fuel Economy and Emissions of Spark-Ignited Engines

A fundamental thermodynamic model of the complete spark-ignited, homogeneous charge engine cycle has been used in several parametric analyses to predict the effects of engine design and operating alternatives on fuel consumption and emissions of NOx and unburned hydrocarbons (HC). The simulation includes sub-models for wall heat transfer, NOx and HC emissions, and the engine breathing processes. This work demonstrates the power and utility of a comprehensive engine simulation by presenting several independent parametric studies that were carried out in response to genuine engine design and/or operating strategy questions. Included in this compilation are the effects of cycle heat loss, exhaust port heat loss, combustion duration, and charge dilution (EGR and/or lean air-fuel ratio). In addition, the influence of the design variables associated with bore-stroke ratio, intake and exhaust valve lift, and cam timing are considered.

PIV In-Cylinder Flow Measurements of Swirl and the Effect of Combustion Chamber Design

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) experiments were performed on single-cylinder versions of a 0.375 L/cylinder and a 0.5 L/cylinder engines from the same engine class to determine the differences in swirl flow between the two engines. Two engine speeds (750 and 1500 rpm), manifold pressures (75 kPa and 90 kPa) and valve timings (maximum overlap and with the intake valve 20° retarded from the max overlap position) were examined. The swirl ratio (SR) and mean velocity (|V|) were calculated at BDC for every case in the mid-stroke plane and the fluctuation velocity (U') calculated for the 1500 rpm / 90 kPa / maximum overlap case. The in-cylinder velocities do not differ by the expected ratio of mean piston speed caused by differences in the engine stroke. The smaller engine was expected to have lower in-cylinder velocities and SRs due to a shorter stroke and lower piston speeds but instead has SR and |V| levels that are the same or higher than the larger engine.
