Variation in Squish Length and Swirl to Reach Higher Levels of EGR in a CNG Engine

Gaseous methane fuel for internal combustion engines have proved to be a competitive source of propulsion energy for heavy duty truck engines. Using biogas can even reduce the carbon footprint of the truck to near-zero levels, creating fully environmentally friendly transport. Gas engines have already been on the market and proved to be a popular alternative for buses and waste transport. However, for long haulage these gas engines have not been on par with the equivalent diesel engines. To improve the power and efficiency of EURO VI gas engines running stoichiometrically, a direct way forward is adding more boost pressure and spark advance in combination with more EGR to mitigate knock. Using in-cylinder turbulence to achieve higher mixing rate, the fuel can still be combusted efficiently despite the increased fraction of inert gases.

Undiluted Measurement of sub 10 nm Non-Volatile and Volatile Particle Emissions from a DISI Engine Fueled with Gasoline and Ethanol

In this paper, a High-Temperature Electrical Low-Pressure Impactor (HT-ELPI+) was used to measure particles from a light-duty direct injected spark ignited (DISI) engine fueled with gasoline and ethanol. The HT-ELPI+ measured volatile and non-volatile particle emissions down to 6 nm without the need for dilution. Particle emissions were measured at four operating points while sweeping the end of injection, and at idle operation. The total particle number (PN) and particle size distribution (number and mass) for both non-volatile and volatile emissions were measured with the HT-ELPI+ and compared to the measured PN using two 71.4 times diluted Condensation Particle Counters (CPCs) with two different cut-off sizes, with 23 nm and 7 nm cut-off, respectively. The results show an increase in particle emissions in terms of particle mass and total particle number for ethanol compared to gasoline. The difference in soot mass emissions is small between the fuels.

Turbocharger Speed Estimation via Vibration Analysis

Due to demanding legislation on exhaust emissions for internal combustion engines and increasing fuel prices, automotive manufacturers have focused their efforts on optimizing turbocharging systems. Turbocharger system control optimization is difficult: Unsteady flow conditions combined with not very accurate compressor maps make the real time turbocharger rotational speed one of the most important quantities in the optimization process. This work presents a methodology designed to obtain the turbocharger rotational speed via vibration analysis. Standard knock sensors have been employed in order to achieve a robust and accurate, yet still a low-cost solution capable of being mounted on-board. Results show that the developed method gives an estimation of the turbocharger rotational speed, with errors and accuracy acceptable for the proposed application. The method has been evaluated on a heavy duty diesel engine.

Tuning Axle Whine Characteristics with Emphasis on Gear Dynamics and Psychoacoustics

A combined lumped parameter, finite element (FE) and boundary element (BE) model is developed to predict the whine noise from rear axle. The hypoid geared rotor system, including the gear pair, shafts, bearings, engine and load, is represented by a lumped parameter model, in which the dynamic coupling between the engaging gear pair is represented by a gear mesh model condensed from the loaded tooth contact analysis results. The lumped parameter model gives the dynamic bearing forces, and the noise radiated by the gearbox housing vibration due to the dynamic bearing force excitations is calculated using a coupled FE-BE approach. Based on the predicted noise, a new procedure is proposed to tune basic rear axle design parameters for better sound quality purpose. To illustrate the salient features of the proposed method, the whine noise from an example rear axle is predicted and tuned.

Torque Estimation Based Virtual Crank Angle Sensor

In engine management systems many calculations and actuator actions are performed in the crank angle domain. Most of these actions and calculations benefit from an improved accuracy of the crank angle measurement. Improved estimation of crank angle, based on pulse signals from an induction sensor placed on the flywheel of a heavy duty CI engine is thus of great importance. To estimate the crank angle the torque balance on the crankshaft is used. This torque balance is based on Newton’s second law. The net torque gives the flywheel acceleration which in turn gives engine speed and crank angle position. The described approach was studied for two crankshaft models: A rigid crankshaft approach and a lumped mass approach, the latter having the benefit of being able to capture the torsional effects of the crankshaft twisting and bending due to torques acting on it. These methods were then compared to a linear extrapolation of the engine speed, a common method to estimate crank angle today.

Tool Integration, from Tool to Tool Chain with ISO 26262

The use of innovative power sources in future cars has long-ranging implications on vehicle safety. We studied these implications in the context of the guidance on software tool qualification in the then current ISO 26262 draft, when building an urban concept vehicle to participate in the 2011 Shell Eco-Marathon. While the guidance on tool qualification is detailed, the guidance in regard to tools integrated into tool chains is limited. It only points out that the environment that tools execute in needs to be taken into consideration. In this paper we clarify the implications of tool chains on tool qualification in the context of ISO 26262 by focusing on answering two questions; first, are there parts of the development environment related to tool integration that are likely to fall outside of tool qualification efforts as currently defined by ISO 26262; secondly, can we define if, and -if so- how, tool integration is affected by ensuring functional safety.

Time-Varying Non-Linear Dynamics of a Hypoid Gear Pair for Rear Axle Applications

A general time-varying nonlinear dynamic model of a hypoid gear pair for rear axle applications is proposed. The dynamic model considers time-varying mesh position, line of action, mesh stiffness, mesh damping and backlash nonlinearity. Based on the model, dynamic analysis is conducted to study the effect of mean load, mesh damping and mesh parameter variations on dynamic mesh force response and the interaction between them and backlash nonlinearity. Numerous nonlinear phenomena such as tooth impacts and jump discontinuities are revealed by computational results.

Time Scale Re-Sampling to Improve Transient Event Averaging

As the drive to make automobiles more noise and vibration free continues, it has become necessary to analyze transient events as well as periodic and random phenomena. Averaging of transient events requires a repeatable event as well as an available trigger event. Knowing the exact event time, the data can be post-processed by re-sampling the time scale to capture the recorded event at the proper instant in time to allow averaging. Accurately obtaining the event time is difficult given the sampling restrictions of current data acquisition hardware. This paper discusses the ideal hardware needed to perform this type of analysis, and provides analytical examples showing the transient averaging improvements using time scale re-sampling. These improvements are applied to noise source identification of a single transient event using an arrayed microphone technique. With this technique, the averaging is performed using time delays between potential sources and microphones in the array.

Theoretical Assessment of Rigs for Accelerated Ash Accumulation in Diesel Particulate Filters

Renewable fuels from different feedstocks can enable sustainable transport solutions with significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional petroleum-derived fuels. Nevertheless, the use of biofuels in diesel engines will still require similar exhaust gas cleaning systems as for conventional diesel. Hence, the use of diesel particulate filters (DPF) will persist as a much needed part of the vehicle’s aftertreatment system. Combustion of renewable fuels can potentially yield soot and ash with different properties as well as larger amounts of ash compared to conventional fossil fuels. The faster ash build-up and altered ash deposition pattern lead to an increase in pressure drop over the DPF, increase the fuel consumption and call for premature DPF maintenance or replacement. Prolonging the maintenance interval of the DPF for heavy-duty trucks, having a demand for high up-time, is highly desirable.

Surge Detection Using Knock Sensors in a Heavy Duty Diesel Engine

Improving turbocharger performance to increase engine efficiency has the potential to help meet current and upcoming exhaust legislation. One limiting factor is compressor surge, an air flow instability phenomenon capable of causing severe vibration and noise. To avoid surge, the turbocharger is operated with a safety margin (surge margin) which, as well as avoiding surge in steady state operation, unfortunately also lowers engine performance. This paper investigates the possibility of detecting compressor surge with a conventional engine knock sensor. It further recommends a surge detection algorithm based on their signals during transient engine operation. Three knock sensors were mounted on the turbocharger and placed along the axes of three dimensions of movement. The engine was operated in load steps starting from steady state. The steady state points of operation covered the vital parts of the engine speed and load range.

Study on Energy Loss due to Cornering Resistance in Over-Actuated Vehicles using Optimal Control

As vehicles become electrified and more intelligent in terms of sensing, actuation and processing; a number of interesting possibilities arise in controlling vehicle dynamics and driving behavior. Over-actuation with in- wheel motors, all wheel steering and active camber is one such possibility, which facilitate the control strategies that push boundaries in energy consumption and safety. Optimal control can be used to investigate the best combinations of control inputs to an over-actuated system. This paper shows how an optimal control problem can be formulated and solved for an over-actuated vehicle case, and highlights the translation of this optimal solution to a real-world scenario, enabling intelligent means to improve vehicle efficiency. This paper gives an insight into Dynamic Programming (DP) as an offline optimal control method that guarantees the global optimum.

Study of Nozzle Fouling: Deposit Build-Up and Removal

The global demand for decreased emission from engines and increased efficiency drives manufactures to develop more advanced fuel injection systems. Today's compression-ignited engines use common rail systems with high injection pressures and fuel injector nozzles with small orifice diameters. These systems are highly sensitive to small changes in orifice diameters since these could lead to deteriorations in spray characteristics, thus reducing engine performance and increasing emissions. Phenomena that could create problems include nozzle fouling caused by metal carboxylates or biofuels. The problems increase with extended use of biofuels. This paper reports on an experimental study of nozzle hole fouling performed on a single-cylinder engine. The aim was to identify if the solubility of the fuel has an effect on deposit build-up and, thus, the reduction in fuelling with associated torque loss, and if there is a probability of regenerating the contaminated injectors.

Study of Installation Effects on Automotive Cooling Fan Noise

Vehicle electrification is one of the biggest trends in the automotive industry. Without the presence of combustion engine, which is the main noise source on conventional vehicles, noise from other components becomes more perceivable; among these components, the cooling fan is one of the major noise sources, especially during battery charging. The design of cooling fan modules is usually carried out in the early stage before building prototype vehicles. Therefore, understanding the installation effects of the cooling fan on the radiated sound is essential to secure good customer satisfaction. In this study, three different measurement setups of cooling fans are carried out: free field, wall mounted, and in-vehicle measurement. Four cooling fan prototypes with different fan blade designs are used in each measurement. Correlations of these measurements are investigated through comparisons of the measurement results.

Sound Transmission Through Cylindrical Double-Walled Shells Sandwiching Porous Material

Sound transmission through a cylindrical double-walled shell lined with an elastic porous material is studied. Love's equation is applied to describe the shell motions coupled with acoustic wave equations. An interesting method is developed to simplify the analysis of the wave propagation in the elastic porous material, which reduces the model developed by Bolton et al. [2] based on the Biot's theory [1] to a simple one-dimensional wave propagation model. The results from the simplified model are compared with those from the Bolton's model and measurements. Solutions for the sound transmission through the cylindrical double-walled shell lined with an elastic porous material are obtained for various configurations using the simplified method, and compared with measured results. Advantages and limitations of the simplified analysis method developed are explained from the perspective of practical applications.

Silicon Microsensors for Aerospace Condition Monitoring

This paper provides several examples of silicon “micromachined” semiconductor sensors with which the authors are involved for aerospace condition monitoring. This and related work in MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) has the potential to revolutionize condition monitoring in aerospace condition and “health monitoring” by (1) moving “smart” electronics out to the sensor chip itself and (2) combining a vast quantity and types of, not only electronic, but micromechanical sensing schemes into the silicon chip . Precisely formed cantilevers, gears, valves, microplumbing and even micro motors of the cross-section of a human hair can be fabricated on a single silicon microchip. Silicon is an excellent mechanical material with a yield strength several times that of stainless steel. Also silicon has excellent thermal properties , whereas compatible silicon dioxide (which we typically use in connection with silicon microelectronics patterning) is virtually a thermal insulator.

Semi-Predictive Modeling of Diluted Ethanol and Methanol Combustion in Conventional Spark Ignition Operation

Alcohols offer high resistance to autoignition which is necessary to attain the required load in heavy duty (HD) spark ignition (SI) engines. Dilution increases thermal efficiency and reduces propensity to autoignition making it an important combustion strategy. Reliable and robust prediction at increased dilution is necessary to support development of high efficiency spark ignition engines and the transition to renewable fuels. A previous experimental study demonstrated 25 bar gross IMEPg for ethanol and methanol at λ=1.4 excess air ratio and over 48% indicated efficiency at λ=1.6 on a single cylinder engine. Based on this dataset, a semi-predictive model (SITurb) was fitted for a range of excess air ratios and engine loads. With the default model, poor accuracy was observed above λ=1.4. Ignition delay was incorrectly predicted at λ=1.6 and λ=1.8.

Semi-Empirical CFD Transient Simulation of Engine Air Filtration Systems

To improve fuel efficiency and facilitate handling of the vehicle in a dense city environment, it should be as small as possible given its intended application. This downsizing trend impacts the size of the engine bay, where the air filter box has to be packed in a reduced space, still without increased pressure drop, reduced load capacity nor lower filtering efficiency. Due to its flexibility and reduced cost, CFD simulations play an important role in the optimization process of the filter design. Even though the air-flow through the filter box changes as the dust load increases, the current modeling framework seldom account for such time dependence. Volvo Car Corporation presents an industrial affordable model to solve the time-dependent dust load on filter elements and calculate the corresponding flow behavior over the life time of the air filter box.

Reactivity of Diesel Soot from 6- and 8-Cylinder Heavy-Duty Engines

Increasing concern for air pollution together with the introduction of new types of fuels pose new challenges to the exhaust aftertreatment system for heavy-duty (HD) vehicles. For diesel-powered engines, emissions of particulate matter (PM) is one of the main drawbacks due to its effect on health. To mitigate the tailpipe emissions of PM, heavy-duty vehicles are since Euro V equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The accumulation of particles causes flow restriction resulting in fuel penalties and decreased vehicle performance. Understanding the properties of PM produced during engine operation is important for the development and optimized control of the DPF. This study has focused on assessing the reactivity of the PM by measuring the oxidation kinetics of the carbonaceous fraction. PM was sampled from two different heavy-duty engines during various test cycles.

Pressure Ratio Influence on Exhaust Valve Flow Coefficients

In one dimensional engine simulation software, flow losses over complex geometries such as valves and ports are described using flow coefficients. It is generally assumed that the pressure ratio over the valve has a negligible influence on the flow coefficient. However during the exhaust valve opening the pressure difference between cylinder and port is large which questions the accuracy of this assumption. In this work the influence of pressure ratio on the exhaust valve flow coefficient has been investigated experimentally in a steady-flow test bench. Two cylinder heads, designated A and B, from a Heavy-Duty engine with different valve shapes and valve seat angles have been investigated. The tests were performed with both exhaust valves open and with only one of the two exhaust valves open. The pressure ratio over the exhaust port was varied from 1.1:1 to 5:1. For case A1 with a single exhaust valve open, the flow coefficient decreased significantly with pressure ratio.

Pressure Amplitude Influence on Pulsating Exhaust Flow Energy Utilization

A turbocharged Diesel engine for heavy-duty on-road vehicle applications employs a compact exhaust manifold to satisfy transient torque and packaging requirements. The small exhaust manifold volume increases the unsteadiness of the flow to the turbine. The turbine therefore operates over a wider flow range, which is not optimal as radial turbines have narrow peak efficiency zone. This lower efficiency is compensated to some extent by the higher energy content of the unsteady exhaust flow compared to steady flow conditions. This paper experimentally investigates the relationship between exhaust energy utilization and available energy at the turbine inlet at different degrees of unsteady flow. A special exhaust manifold has been constructed which enables the internal volume of the manifold to be increased. The larger volume reduces the exhaust pulse amplitude and brings the operating condition for the turbine closer to steady-flow.
