a progress report — Dry-Type Air Cleaners on Farm Tractors

1959-01-01
590026
GREATER ease of servicing is one of the ultimate goals in the development of dry-type air cleaners. The authors acknowledge, however, that the oil-bath cleaner is a rugged proved component that has done a good job for the farmers who serviced it properly. This paper describes studies made in Illinois of oil-bath and dry air cleaners in field service. At the same fuel/air ratios, the maximum horsepower of a test engine was greater with the dry-type filter than with the oil-bath cleaner. It was found that with AC fine dust and steady airflow, the oil-bath cleaners had significantly lower efficiencies than the dry-type filter. At less than rated airflow the efficiency of the oil-bath cleaner decreased while that of the dry filter remained high.

Yield Mapping with Digital Aerial Color Infrared (CIR) Images

1999-09-14
1999-01-2847
Yield potential was predicted and mapped for three corn fields in Central Illinois, using digital aerial color infrared images. Three methods, namely statistical (regression) modeling, genetic algorithm optimization and artificial neural networks, were used for developing yield models. Two image resolutions of 3 and 6 m/pixel were used for modeling. All the models were trained using July 31 image and tested using images from July 2 and August 31, all from 1998. Among the three models, artificial neural networks gave best performance, with a prediction error less than 30%. The statistical model resulted in prediction errors in the range of 23 to 54%. The lower resolution images resulted in better prediction accuracy compared to resolutions higher than or equal to the yield resolution. Images after pollination resulted in better accuracy compared to images before pollination.

Vortex Tube Heat Booster to Improve Performance of Heat Driven Cooling Cycles for Automotive Applications

2016-04-05
2016-01-0245
Increasing energy costs justify research on how to improve utilization of low-grade energy that is abundantly available as waste heat from many thermodynamic processes such as internal combustion engine cycles. One option is to directly generate cooling through absorption/adsorption or vapor jet ejector cycles. As in the case of power generation cycles, cooling cycle efficiencies would increase if the heat input were available at higher temperature. This paper assesses the feasibility of a novel idea that uses a vortex tube to increase the available temperature levels of low-grade heat sources. The desired temperature increase is achieved by sending a stream of vapor that was heated by the waste heat source through a vortex tube, which further elevates the temperature used in a heat driven ejector cooling cycle.

2016-01-0252
This paper presents the visualization of periodic reverse flow in tubes of an automobile microchannel evaporator. Two microchannel tubes in an off-the-shelf evaporator are modified so that the leading edges are transparent and the rest of the area remains unchanged, providing realistic air heating. Flow visualizations in air heated aluminum tubes and electric heating glass tube are compared and similar flow physics is identified. A mechanistic model of flow reversal is developed. The model is capable of simulating bubble generation, growth coalescence and reverse. The validation against experimental visualization is on the way.

Visualization Study of the Relationship between the Orientation of Tube and the Flow Regimes Near the Expansion Valve

2020-04-14
2020-01-1256
Several types of noise exist in automobiles. The flow-induced noise in the expansion device can be very disturbing since the expansion device is located near the occupants. In many studies, the flow-induced noise is found to be mitigated when the orientation of the tube is changed. However, no study explores the reason why flow-induced noise changes when the orientation of the tube is changed. The flow-induced noise varies along with the flow regimes near the expansion devices. In this paper, an experimental based research is used to study how the tube orientation changes the flow regimes under the same operating conditions. A pumped R134a system with transparent tubes (1/4-inch ID) is used to visualize the flow regimes near the manual expansion valve. The transparent tube is a continuous connection of horizontal tubes, 45° inclined tubes, and vertical tubes.

Downhill mountain roads are the accident prone sections because of their complexity and variety. Drivers rely more on driving experience and it is very easy to cause traffic accidents due to the negligence or the judgment failure. Traditional active safety systems, such as ABS, having subjecting to the driver's visual feedback, can’t fully guarantee the downhill driving safety in complex terrain environments. To enhance the safety of vehicles in the downhill, this study combines the characteristics of vehicle dynamics and the geographic information. Thus, through which the drivers could obtain the safety speed specified for his/her vehicle in the given downhill terrains and operate in advance to reduce traffic accidents due to driver's judgment failure and avoid the brake overheating and enhance the safety of vehicles in the downhill.

2017-03-28
2017-01-0035
Vehicle speed is an important factor to driving safety, which is directly related to the stability and braking performance of the vehicle. Besides, the precise measurement of the vehicle speed is the basis of some vehicle active safety systems. Even in the future intelligent transportation, high quality speed information will also play an important role. The commonly used vehicle speed measurement techniques are based on the wheel speed sensors, which are not accurate, especially when the wheels’ slip rate is not equal to zero. Focusing on these issues, image matching technology has been used to measure the vehicle speed in this paper. The image information of the road in the front of the vehicle is collected, and the pixel displacement of the vehicle is calculated by the matching system, thus accurately vehicle speed can be obtained. Compared with conventional speed measure technology, it has the advantages of wide measuring range, and high accuracy.

2023-01-7110
Accurately predicting the future trajectories of surrounding traffic agents is important for ensuring the safety of autonomous vehicles. To address the scenario of frequent interactions among traffic agents in the highway merging area, this paper proposes a trajectory prediction method based on interactive graph attention mechanism. Our approach integrates an interactive graph model to capture the complex interactions among traffic agents as well as the interactions between these agents and the contextual map of the highway merging area. By leveraging this interactive graph model, we establish an agent-agent interactive graph and an agent-map interactive graph. Moreover, we employ Graph Attention Network (GAT) to extract spatial interactions among trajectories, enhancing our predictions. To capture temporal dependencies within trajectories, we employ a Transformer-based multi-head self-attention mechanism.

Autonomous driving technology represents a significant direction for future transportation, encompassing four key aspects: perception, planning, decision-making, and control. Among these aspects, vehicle trajectory planning and control are crucial for achieving safe and efficient autonomous driving. This paper introduces a Combined Model Predictive Control algorithm aimed at ensuring collision-free and comfortable driving while adhering to appropriate lane trajectories. Due to the algorithm is divided into two layers, it is also called the Bi-Level Model Predictive Control algorithm (BLMPC). The BLMPC algorithm comprises two layers. The upper-level trajectory planner, to reduce planning time, employs a point mass model that neglects the vehicle's physical dimensions as the planning model. Additionally, obstacle avoidance cost functions are integrated into the planning process.

In the process of truck overload and over-limit detection, it is necessary to detect the characteristics of the vehicle's size, type, and wheel number. In addition, in some vehicle vision-based load recognition systems, the vehicle load can be calculated by detecting the vibration frequency of specific parts of the vehicle or the change in the length of the suspension during the vehicle's forward process. Therefore, it is essential to quickly and accurately identify vehicle features through the camera. This paper proposes a vehicle feature recognition method based on image semantic segmentation and Python, which can identify the length, height, number of wheels and vibration frequency at specific parts of the vehicle based on the vehicle driving video captured by the roadside camera.

Vehicle Accelerator and Brake Pedal On-Off State Judgment by Using Speed Recognition

2021-04-16
2021-01-5038
The development of intelligent transportation improves road efficiency, reduces automobile energy consumption, and improves driving safety. The core of intelligent transportation is the two-way information interaction between vehicles and the road environment. At present, road environmental information can flow to the vehicle, while the vehicle’s information rarely flows to the outside world. The electronic throttle and electronic braking systems of some vehicles use sensors to get the state of the accelerator and brake pedal, which can be transmitted to the outside environment through technologies such as the Internet of Vehicles. But the Internet of Vehicles technology has not been widely used, and it relies on signal sources, which is a passive way of information acquisition. In this paper, an active identification method is proposed to get the vehicle pedal on-off state as well as the driver’s operation behavior through existing traffic facilities.

2014-01-0750
Vacuum cleaning vehicle is the necessary equipment for the Municipal Sanitation Department to keep the road surface clean and the dust subsidence system is the heart unit for the proper function of the cleaning vehicle. The reasonable design of this system could increase the load capacity of the vehicle and be convenient for the garbage collecting and dumping. Meanwhile, the engine power could be relatively reduced and the influence on the environment duo to the dusty air in the outlet could be also effectively improved. In the study, the gravity dedusting principle is used firstly for structure design to reduce the flow rate of dust particles inside the lower part of the dust subsidence system. The ruleless collision loss among dust particles is reduced and thereby the fan power is saved. By means of a reasonable separated chamber design and the use of inertia baffle, the sort management for dust particles is developed and the work stress of the export filter is released observably.

A flow channel design of the battery liquid cooling plate is carried out through the variable density topology optimization method according to the heat dissipation requirements of lithium-ion power batteries under actual working conditions. Firstly, given the non-uniform heat generation of lithium battery cells, the heat generation mechanism is studied so that the battery electro-thermal model is established, then the distribution regularity of heat generation rate in the cell at different discharge rates is obtained. Subsequently, through COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software, the multi-objective topology optimization of the primary configuration radiator is conducted. The weights of the optimization objectives minimum temperature and minimum flow resistance are determined by practical engineering application. Finally, an optimized model with a volume fraction of 50% was obtained.

Thermoelectric Module Temperature Stability Control for the Vehicle Engine Exhaust Heat Recovery

2015-04-14
2015-01-0350
The vehicle engine exhaust wastes heat. For the conventional scheme, the hot-end of the thermoelectric module is connected with the exhaust pipe, while the cold-end is cooled through the vehicle engine cooling cycle. The variation of vehicle engine operating conditions brings the instability of the hot-end temperature, which affects the power generation performance of thermoelectric materials and increases the damage risk to the thermoelectric materials caused by the high temperature. This research adopts the heat transfer oil circulation as the intermediate fluid to absorb the dynamic heat flux of the vehicle engine exhaust so as to release the heat steadily to the hot-end of the thermoelectric module. The thermal characteristics of the target diesel vehicle engine exhaust gas are evaluated based on the experimental data firstly.

2016-01-0228
Vehicle exhaust waste-heat recovery with thermoelectric power generators can improve energy efficiency, as well as vehicle fuel economy. In the conventional structure, the hot-end of thermoelectric module is directly connected with the outer wall of the exhaust pipe, while the cold-end is connected with the water pipe’s outer wall of the vehicle engine cooling cycle. However, the variety of vehicle engine operating conditions leads to the instability of the hot-end temperature, which will reduce the generating efficiency of the thermoelectric modules and also shorten its service life. This research is on the basis of constructing a heat transfer oil circulation, and to study the action principles and implementation methods of it.
