Study on Characteristics of Gasoline Fueled HCCI Using Negative Valve Overlap

Gasoline fueled Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion with internal exhaust gas re-circulation using Negative Valve Overlap (NOL) was investigated by means of calculation and experiment in order to apply this technology to practical use with sufficient operating range and with acceptable emission and fuel consumption. In this paper we discuss the basic characteristics of NOL-HCCI with emphasis on the influence of intake valve timing on load range, residual gas fraction and induction air flow rate. Emission and fuel consumption under various operation conditions are also discussed. A water-cooled 250cc single cylinder engine with a direct injection system was used for this study. Three sets of valve timing were selected to investigate the effect of intake valve opening duration. Experimental results demonstrated that an engine speed of approximately 2000rpm yields an NMEP (Net Mean Effective Pressure) range from 200kPa to 400kPa.

Steering Damper for Street Motorcycle

We introduce a research on steering dampers using MR fluid (Magnetorheological Fluid). In recent years, steering dampers have been used in on-road and off-road motorcycles. Steering dampers stabilize the front end of motorcycles. The advantage of a steering damper is increased stability, but hydraulic steering dampers give rise to the problem of ‘Heavy Steering’. In order to resolve this heavy steering, we need to set the restrictions on the maximum damping force and avoid it from interfering when the rider is steering. However only reducing the damping force will lead to insufficient damping force when the handle, unresponsive because of kickback, shakes. We solved this problem with the development of an electric control damper which generates sufficient damping force at low steering angle rates and also allows for mechanically limiting the maximum damping force.

Steering Damper for Motocross

In this paper, we introduce a research of Steering Damper using MR fluid (Magnetorheological Fluid). In recent years, Steering Dampers have been used in motocross races on off road courses. Steering Dampers stabilize the front end of motocross bikes that are used in competitive races held on rough terrain. The advantage of a Steering Damper is increased stability, however hydraulic Steering Dampers give rise to the problem of ‘Heavy Steering’. In order to solve this problem, we used MR Fluid and developed an Electronic Control Steering Damper that does not use a valve like hydraulic damper. The damper design uses “Direct Shear Mode” and features a steering angle sensor built into the damper, which results in easier, smoother steering. To test the effectiveness of our new design, we installed our new Steering Damper on the YZ 450F (Yamaha's competition model). We then asked for feedback from riders both in Japan and overseas.

Relation between the Weave Mode in Low Speed Range and Slalom Running of Motorcycles

Recently, our research has focused on the weave mode. This is a representative vibration mode of motorcycles and is important when considering maneuverability and stability. In a method of analyzing the weave mode, a disturbance is applied to the handle bars of the motorcycle during running and then the response waveform of the roll angle and other items at that time is used to perform estimations. However, when the motorcycle is driven at low speeds, the steering operations of the rider have a large effect on the running data and this makes estimation difficult. Therefore, it was assumed that weave mode data can be estimated from slalom running data since this possesses almost the same vibration frequency as the weave mode in low speed range. In this research, a simulation was used to investigate the relationship between the weave mode and slalom running.

Reduction of Friction Loss through the Use of Rolling Big-End Bearings

We compared motoring friction loss, output performance at WOT (wide open throttle) and specific fuel consumption of big-end bearings on engines having identical specifications between the case of using plain bearings and rolling bearings to investigate the effect of the lubricating oil supply rate on these parameters in an attempt to improve output through reduction of friction loss for big-end bearings of small, high-output motorcycle engines. Testing was performed using a 125 cc, 4-cycle, single cylinder engine at high engine speeds mainly above 10,000 rpm.

Light Body for Small Vehicles Using High-Quality Die-Casting Component

A high-quality die-casting technology has been developed for lightweight aluminum frame structures that produces high-strength aluminum parts that are also weldable. This new technology has been used in casting frames for motorcycles and snowmobiles and has enabled improved frame designs with far fewer component parts than was possible before. This die-casting technology also results in a significant reduction in energy consumption during the manufacturing process.

Lifetime Prediction of a Crankpin using a Ball on Disk Type Rolling Contact Fatigue Life Testing

This paper describes an experimental method to predict the rolling contact fatigue life of a crankpin in a market vehicle engine. The fatigue life up to pitting was evaluated by two laboratory tests including a fatigue life measurement using a ball-on-disk test machine and a crankpin durability measurement by an engine bench test. The surface observation after the tests revealed that the surface dent triggers pitting in both tests. The Weibull plot of the percent failure vs. cycle to failure as a function of the contact stress was presented. In order to directly evaluate the effect of the contact stress on the lifetime, the lifetime values measured at L50 are plotted in the diagram showing the contact stress vs. cycle to failure. The obtained relation can predict the lifetime under the controlled condition in which the number of maximum torque points is countable.

Friction Measurement of Al-17%Si Monolithic Cylinder with using Newly Developed Floating Liner Device

The improvement of fuel consumption is the most important issue for engine manufactures from the viewpoint of energy and environment conservation. A piston-cylinder system plays an important role for the reduction of an engine friction. For the improvement of the frictional behavior of the piston-cylinder system, it is beneficial to observe and analyze the frictional waveforms during an engine operation. To meet the above-mentioned demand, frictional waveforms were measured with using the renewed floating liner device. In the newly developed floating liner device, an actual cylinder block itself was used as a test specimen. The measured single cylinder was an aluminum monolithic type made of hypereutectic Al-17%Si alloy using a high pressure die casting process. The combined piston was a light weight forged piston and a DLC coated piston ring was used. For the measurement, 110cc air cooled single cylinder engine was used.

Effects of Surface Compound Layer on Bending Fatigue Strength of Nitrided Chromium-Molybdenum Steel

Carburized and quenched materials with high fatigue strength are often used for motorcycle engine parts. Nitrided materials exhibit less deformation during heat treatment than carburized and quenched materials, so if the same or higher fatigue strength can be achieved with nitrided materials as with carburized and quenched materials, the geometric precision of parts can be increased and we can reduce engine noise as well as power loss. When the fatigue strengths of a nitrided material with its compound layer surface put into γ’ phase through nitriding potential control (hereafter, G), and a nitrided material put into ε phase (hereafter, E) were measured, the results showed the fatigue strength of the G to be about 11% higher than that of carburized and quenched materials. It was inferred that the strength of the compound layer determines fatigue strength.

Drop Test Simulation Model for Motorcycles

The finite element method (FEM) is generally utilized to investigate the chassis strength of a motorcycle. However, it is difficult to determine the load conditions for FEM analysis of a drop test. Therefore, a method of drop test strength prediction at the basic design stage has been developed by combining stress analysis with vehicle dynamics analysis. A mathematical model and computer simulation system have been developed to predict the load conditions obtained by accelerations at several chassis locations. The model is constructed using flexible bodies (e.g., front fork and rear arm) as well as rigid bodies. The flexible front fork model was made by combining beam theory with substructural methods. Also, the model includes a front fork friction model which describes Coulomb's friction in slide bushings. If dynamic analysis is replaced by an equivalent static analysis, the force can be predicted from the acceleration data and the mass distribution.

Development of Pollution-Free Rapid Plating System

It is in the plating process that the worst bottleneck occurs in plant automation. We, however, have succeeded in making our plating process free from pollution and compact, allowing us to install this system within a production line and consequently establish a continuous production line resulting in a decrease in plating cost to about 1/2 of the previous cost. We have achieved an excellent chrome plating speed of 60µ/min, by placing an anode relatively close to the part to be plated and by sending the plating solution into the space between the two by means of a pump. This provides a plating speed 100 times faster than with conventional methods, while improving the quality of the plating coat considerably. The system is optimum for functional platings, and can be used for the plating of shock absorber rods, engine valves, engine cylinders, etc.

Development of Lightweight Oil Catch Tank Produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

Laser powder bed fusion is one of the metal additive manufacturing technologies, so-called 3D printing. It has attracted great attentions due to high geometrical flexibility and remarkable metallurgical characteristics. An oil catch tank has been widely used in automotive industries for filtering oil vapors or carbon sludge from blow-by gas as a conventional usage. A pneumatic valve system mainly adopted to high-performance engines is also a potential application of it because undesirable oil infiltrates into air springs during engine operation, resulting in an excess spring pressure. This work focused on developing a lightweight oil catch tank which can be applied to a pneumatic valve system by taking advantage of additive manufacturing techniques. Al-Mg-Sc alloy powder with high tensile strength as well as high ductility were used under the consideration of specific strength, printability and availability.

Development of Fracture Splitting Method for Case Hardened Connecting Rods

The fracture splitting (FS) method for case hardened connecting rods has been developed to improve engine performance while decreasing production costs. The FS method is widely used for automotive connecting rods because it effectively improves their productivity. Normalized forging steels, microalloyed forging steels and powder metals have generally been used as the material in the FS method as they are easily split due to their brittleness. On the other hand, the materials to be used for high performance motorcycles are case hardened low carbon steels because they allow the connecting rods to be lightweight due to their high fatigue strengths. These materials, which have a hardened area of approx. 0.5mm in depth from the surface, have a ductile texture inside. This texture obstructs the crack propagation and makes the split force too high to split without deforming the bearing area.

Generally, the gearshift mechanism for outboard motors shifts into forward or reverse gear without using the synchromesh arrangement (dog clutch engagement)(See Fig.1). This type of shift mechanism has advantages in simple structure and in saving space and cost, but at the same time, this is often the source of problem due to the abrasion caused by the hitting of gear against the dog clutch before the engagement, as well as large gearshift shock and noise. In addition, the outboard motor horsepower is getting bigger in recent years. As they are equipped with bigger and heavier engines and propellers, the shifting shock and noise tend to become more severe. For this reason, the improvement in this aspect is required. We looked into the way to reduce the shock and noise by means of propellers, because the propeller can be mounted and replaced easily, which allows the effective improvement to be spread to the outboard motors already in the market.

An Experimental Study of Connecting Rod Big Ends

Connecting rod design factors, such as geometric shape, capscrew torque and materials can significantly affect bore distortion and assembly stress. In this paper, experiments using different materials were conducted on several connecting rod big-ends with various shapes, bosses and bolts. The results show that the distortion of the big-end bore and the bolt stress are influenced considerably by the big-end shape, the bolt axial tension and the material under inertia force. It was also observed that the bolt bending stress and the load separating the big-end joint surface could be calculated with high accuracy using three-dimensional FEM in the initial connecting rod design.

04 Emission Reduction by Cylinder Wall Injection in 2-Stroke S.I. Engines

A direct injection system in which fuel was injected through the cylinder wall was developed and detailed investigation was made for the purpose of reducing short-circuit of fuel in 2-stroke engines. As a result of dynamo tests using 430cc single cylinder engine, it was found that the injector was best attached at a location as close to TDC as possible on the rear transfer port side, and that the entire amount of fuel should be injected towards the piston top surface. Emissions were worsened if fuel was injected towards the exhaust port or spark plug. Although the higher injection pressure resulted in large emissions reduction effects, it did not have a significant effect on fuel consumption. When a butterfly exhaust valve, known to be effective against irregular combustion in the light load range, was applied, it was found to lead to further reductions in HC emission and fuel consumption while also improving combustion stability.
