Study on Lubricating Oil Consumption from Evaporation of Oil-Film on Cylinder Wall for Diesel Engine

It is effective in engine fuel economy to reduce the viscous friction by applying lubricating oil with low viscosity. The lower viscosity such as SAE0W20, however, increase lubricating oil consumption, LOC. In addition, it has become urgent to reduce the LOC because the emission of the sulfide ash, phosphorous and sulfur contents degrades the diesel particulate filter and the de-NOx catalyst, in addition to which the emission of metal oxide contents from oil additives can cause pre-ignition in highly supercharged spark ignition engines. In order to clarify the LOC mechanism of low viscosity oils, the LOC rates were measured with a supercharged diesel engine under various operating conditions when lubricated with SAE30 or SAE10W30 test oil, and the resulting data have been compared with the rates of the evaporation from the oil-film on the cylinder wall, LOE, as predicted by the devised analysis method for multi-species component oils.

Relation between the Weave Mode in Low Speed Range and Slalom Running of Motorcycles

Recently, our research has focused on the weave mode. This is a representative vibration mode of motorcycles and is important when considering maneuverability and stability. In a method of analyzing the weave mode, a disturbance is applied to the handle bars of the motorcycle during running and then the response waveform of the roll angle and other items at that time is used to perform estimations. However, when the motorcycle is driven at low speeds, the steering operations of the rider have a large effect on the running data and this makes estimation difficult. Therefore, it was assumed that weave mode data can be estimated from slalom running data since this possesses almost the same vibration frequency as the weave mode in low speed range. In this research, a simulation was used to investigate the relationship between the weave mode and slalom running.

Plasma Temperature of Spark Discharge in a Lean-burn Spark-ignition Engine Using a Time Series of Spectra Measurements

In this research, a spark plug with an optical fiber has been developed to obtain the emission spectra from the spark discharge and flame kernel. This developed spark plug with an optical fiber can obtain the time series of emission spectra from the spark discharge and Initial flame kernel in the real spark-ignition engine using EMCCD spectrometer. The plasma vibrational temperature of the spark discharge can be measured using the emission spectra from the electrically excited CN violet band system. The plasma of the spark discharge and gas rotational temperature of the initial flame kernel can be also measured using emission spectra from OH* radicals (P and R branches). The plasma temperature of the spark discharge was almost 8,000 K and the gas temperature of the Initial flame kernel approached that of the adiabatic flame temperature.

Motorcycles have been widely used as private transportation means, but are now confronted with difficult situations to meet increasingly stringent noise control regulations which requires various noise abatement technologies. Manufacturers, on the other hand, are required to produce totally balanced motorcycles overcoming restrictions in space, weight, etc. To cope with this situation, utilization of high techniques for measurement and analysis of noise is indispensable including those for detection of noise sources in order to take effective noise abatement measures. Well balanced motorcycles must be protected from tampering or improper maintenance, and it is essential that noise control regulations must be technologically feasible in view of the situation in each country.

Mechanism of Thicker Oil Film Formation Caused by Micro-Dimples Elucidated by Direct Observation with Laser-Induced Fluorescence

Micro-dimple is one of the promising surface texturing technologies to reduce friction loss due to the generation of thicker oil film caused by the cavitation occurrence around the micro-dimples. In this study, the flow behavior of oil film around micro-dimples was directly observed by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). LIF observation for the oil flow showed that micro- dimples induced the cavitation occurrence that contributed to increase the oil film thickness. This was in good agreement with the results of the friction test, and it was thus proved that the cavitation occurrence by micro-dimples is significantly effective for the friction reduction.

L.D.V. Measurements of Pipe Flows in a Small-Two-Cycle Spark-lgnition Engine

A laser Doppler velocimeter is used to measure in real time the velocities of pipe flows in a crankcase-scavenged small two-cycle engine with piston and reed valves. Consequently the optical windows in each pipe must be exchanged instantly by using rotary window systems. The flows in both the inlet and exhaust pipes show different patterns in the motored and firing conditions, but the flows in the scavenging pipe are in a similar pattern regardless of the operating conditions.

The in-cylinder flow, mixture distribution, combustion and exhaust emissions in a research, five-valve purpose-built gasoline engine are discussed on the basis of measurements obtained using laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV), fast spark-plug hydrocarbon sampling, flame imaging and NOx/HC emissions using fast chemiluminescent and flame ionisation detectors/analysers. These measurements have been complemented by steady flow testing of various cylinder head configurations, involving single- and three-valve operation, in terms of flow capacity and in-cylinder tumble strength.

Experimental and Analytical Investigation of Countermeasure against Squeal in Floating Type of Car Disc Brake

This paper deals with low-frequency squeal phenomena generated in floating type of car disc brake units. First, the vibration characteristics of low-frequency squeal (about 2 kHz) were investigated. Here, in order to reproduce the squeal, a bench-test apparatus consisting of an actual automotive disc brake unit was utilized, itself comprising a disc, pad, and caliper. With this, the associated frequency characteristics were experimentally determined. It was found that the squeal is caused by coupled out-of-plane vibration modes among the disc and caliper due to Coulomb friction. As an experimental countermeasure, a dynamic absorber was applied to the leading side or the trailing side of the inner caliper. It was found that squeal can be suppressed when the natural frequency of the dynamic absorber is tuned so as to be near the frequency of the squeal, and that squeal can be suppressed even without viscous damping of the dynamic absorber.

In recent years, efforts to reduce CO2 emissions (carbon neutrality) have accelerated worldwide. In the aluminum manufacturing industry, CO2 emissions can be reduced by switching the raw materials of choice; from virgin ingots to recycled ingots. However, the possible characteristic change accompanying the usage of impurity-ridden recycled ingots severely limits its applications, which also limits its potential contribution to carbon neutrality. Determining how impurity elements present in recycled ingots can affect the function of manufactured components is a necessary first step towards expanding the usage of recycled ingots. In this study, we aimed to apply recycled ingots to the monolithic cylinder made of hypereutectic Al-Si alloy and investigated how impurity elements in recycled ingots affect properties (especially seizure characteristic). Die-cast cylinders using virgin and recycled ingots were manufactured and their properties were investigated.

Development of Compact Continuously Variable Transmission Engine for Motorcycles

The continuously variable transmission (CVT) with a rubber belt used in scooters is also regarded as a potential automatic transmission mechanism for conventional motorcycles. By making this system more compact and building it into the engine, a motorcycle CVT engine has been developed that is about the same size as a manual transmission (MT) engine. During driving with a CVT, heat is generated by friction at the sheaves, and therefore it was necessary to secure a certain length of belt to ensure that external air flows efficiently to the sheaves. However, making the CVT more compact restricted the belt length, which decreased cooling performance and increased the number of bends in the belt, making it difficult to maintain durability. To address this issue, a plastic resin drive belt and newly designed sheaves were adopted, and durability of more than that of a scooter was achieved.

Development of CVT Shift Dynamic Simulation Model with Elastic Rubber V-Belt

This paper presents a practical simulation model of the rubber V-belt CVT which is widely used as a low cost driveline element for small displacement motorcycles. The characteristic of this CVT is determined by the axial force balance between driver and driven pulleys, and the elastic force of a rubber V-belt. Because these axial and elastic forces are calculated by the kinematic and FEM analysis, a large-scale simulation model which costs long execution time for the calculation is needed to estimate the characteristic of CVT. This calculation uses the one-dimensional simulation model built up with MATLAB and SIMULINK environment, so that it was possible to get the calculation result with relatively low execution time. The elastic deformation of the rubber V-Belt was calculated by a simple spring model which was verified by experiments and FEM.

Generally, the gearshift mechanism for outboard motors shifts into forward or reverse gear without using the synchromesh arrangement (dog clutch engagement)(See Fig.1). This type of shift mechanism has advantages in simple structure and in saving space and cost, but at the same time, this is often the source of problem due to the abrasion caused by the hitting of gear against the dog clutch before the engagement, as well as large gearshift shock and noise. In addition, the outboard motor horsepower is getting bigger in recent years. As they are equipped with bigger and heavier engines and propellers, the shifting shock and noise tend to become more severe. For this reason, the improvement in this aspect is required. We looked into the way to reduce the shock and noise by means of propellers, because the propeller can be mounted and replaced easily, which allows the effective improvement to be spread to the outboard motors already in the market.

Combustion Noise of Two-Stroke Gasoline Engines and its Reduction Techniques

In order to obtain more reduction of two-stroke motorcycle engine noise than usual, it becomes necessary to make improvements within the combustion process itself. This study was carried out for two objectives. One is the investigation of the relationship between combustion and noise, and the other one is the development of noise reduction techniques. As the result, it was discovered that there was a significant correlation between engine noise and (dP/dθ)max, called the maximum rate of cylinder pressure rise. Therefore, the reduction of the (dP/dθ) max was recognized to be effective for engine noise reduction. The optimized alteration of combustion chamber shape is the most effective noise reduction technique, because it is able to reduce (dP/dθ) max without any sacrifice of engine power. In fact, the level of noise reduction can be predicted by one of the parameters obtained from the combustion chamber shape.

Finite element method (FEM) plays a crucial role in this respect. In particular, since the vibration characteristic is one of the most important evaluation items, the demand for accurate vibration prediction at the initial design has become much more intense. In recent years, vibration simulation methods have achieved remarkable progress, and especially the substructural synthesis method (SSM), combined with FEM, is used as an effective tool for the requirements.

Analysis of Cyclic Variations of Combustion in High Compression Ratio Boosted D.I.S.I. Engine by Ion-Current Probes and CFD

Regarding S.I. gasoline engine, it is one of the most important matters to eliminate cyclic variation of combustion. Especially with high compression ratio and high boosted engine, the difficulties increase more. This paper describes the analysis of combustion process precisely by using many ion-current probes and CFD with the unique approaches. The number of used ion-current probes is 80 and they are mounted on whole combustion chamber wall especially including moving intake and exhaust valve faces. Thus cyclic variations of flame propagation can be measured precisely under high compression ratio and high boosted conditions in a multi-cylinder engine. In addition, CFD combustion simulation is conducted through full four strokes of continuous nine cycles. Moreover air motion and pressure vibration in intake and exhaust manifolds in whole cycles are considered. These unique approaches have made CFD result correspond to the measurement result of cyclic variations of actual combustion.

04 Emission Reduction by Cylinder Wall Injection in 2-Stroke S.I. Engines

A direct injection system in which fuel was injected through the cylinder wall was developed and detailed investigation was made for the purpose of reducing short-circuit of fuel in 2-stroke engines. As a result of dynamo tests using 430cc single cylinder engine, it was found that the injector was best attached at a location as close to TDC as possible on the rear transfer port side, and that the entire amount of fuel should be injected towards the piston top surface. Emissions were worsened if fuel was injected towards the exhaust port or spark plug. Although the higher injection pressure resulted in large emissions reduction effects, it did not have a significant effect on fuel consumption. When a butterfly exhaust valve, known to be effective against irregular combustion in the light load range, was applied, it was found to lead to further reductions in HC emission and fuel consumption while also improving combustion stability.
