Wireless Security in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks: A Survey

Abstract Vehicular communications face unique security issues in wireless communications. While new vehicles are equipped with a large set of communication technologies, product life cycles are long and software updates are not widespread. The result is a host of outdated and unpatched technologies being used on the street. This has especially severe security impacts because autonomous vehicles are pushing into the market, which will rely, at least partly, on the integrity of the provided information. We provide an overview of the currently deployed communication systems and their security weaknesses and features to collect and compare widely used security mechanisms. In this survey, we focus on technologies that work in an ad hoc manner. This includes Long-Term Evolution mode 4 (LTE-PC5), Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (WAVE), Intelligent Transportation Systems at 5 Gigahertz (ITS-G5), and Bluetooth.

Weld Fatigue Damage Assessment of Rail Track Maintenance Equipment: Regulatory Compliance and Practical Insights

Abstract The use of appropriate loads and regulations is of great importance in weld fatigue assessment of rail on-track maintenance equipment and similar vehicles for optimized design. The regulations and available loads, however, are often generalized for several categories, which proves to be overly conservative for some specific categories of machines. EN (European Norm) and AAR (Association of American Railroads) regulations play a pivotal role in determining the applicable loads and acceptance criteria within this study. The availability of track-induced fatigue load data for the cumulative damage approach in track maintenance machines is often limited. Consequently, the FEA-based validation of rail track maintenance equipment often resorts to the infinite life approach rather than cumulative damage approach for track-induced travel loads, resulting in overly conservative designs.

Water Body Survey, Inspection, and Monitoring Using Amphibious Hybrid Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Abstract Water quality monitoring is needed for the effective management of water resources. Periodic sampling and regular inspection/analysis allow one to classify water and identify changes or trends in water quality over time. This article presents a novel concept of an Amphibious Hybrid Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (AHUAV) that can operate in air and water for rapid water sampling, real-time water quality analysis, and water body management. A methodology using the developed AHUAV system for water body management has also been proposed for an easier and effective way of monitoring water bodies using advanced drone technologies. Using drones for water body management can be a cost-effective and efficient way of carrying out regular inspections and continual monitoring.

Vulnerability of FlexRay and Countermeasures

Abstract The importance of in-vehicle network security has increased with an increase in automated and connected vehicles. Hence, many attacks and countermeasures have been proposed to secure the controller area network (CAN), which is an existent in-vehicle network protocol. At the same time, new protocols-such as FlexRay and Ethernet-which are faster and more reliable than CAN have also been proposed. European OEMs have adopted FlexRay as a control network that can perform the fundamental functions of a vehicle. However, there are few studies regarding FlexRay security. In particular, studies on attacks against FlexRay are limited to theoretical studies or simulation-based experiments. Hence, the vulnerability of FlexRay is unclear. Understanding this vulnerability is necessary for the application of countermeasures and improving the security of future vehicles. In this article, we highlight the vulnerability of FlexRay found in the experiments conducted on a real FlexRay network.

Vertical Takeoff and Landing Aircraft, Vertical Takeoff and Landing Ground Effects

Abstract The ground-effect problems of loss of thrust and fountain-effect instabilities are quantified. Experiments to control and augment ground-effect lift and stability are presented, including jet momentum reflection and fountain redirection using various types of internal and external underbody ventral strakes. By strategically designing the vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) ventral surface, reflection of the impinging fountain momentum is possible so that instead of losing 10% thrust while in ground-effect, remarkably, thrust is augmented 10% or more to a considerable height above the ground, in addition to stabilizing random pitch and roll moments caused by fountain instability.

Using a Dual-Layer Specification to Offer Selective Interoperability for Uptane

Abstract This work introduces the concept of a dual-layer specification structure for standards that separate interoperability functions, such as backward compatibility, localization, and deployment, from those essential to reliability, security, and functionality. The latter group of features, which constitute the actual standard, make up the baseline layer for instructions, while all the elements required for interoperability are specified in a second layer, known as a Protocols, Operations, Usage, and Formats (POUF) document. We applied this technique in the development of a standard for Uptane [1], a security framework for over-the-air (OTA) software updates used in many automobiles. This standard is a good candidate for a dual-layer specification because it requires communication between entities, but does not require a specific format for this communication.

Using Radio Technical Commission for Maritime Services Corrections in a Consumer-Grade Lane-Level Positioning System for Connected Vehicles

Abstract Connected vehicle (CV) technology has the potential to greatly improve the safety, mobility, and environmental sustainability of traffic. Many CV applications require the vehicle position as input, which is primarily provided by global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). Although a large number of those applications (e.g., Intersection Movement Assist) require vehicle positioning to have lane-level accuracy, it has been shown that the type of positioning system typically used by CVs currently cannot provide consistent lane-level accuracy, even under open-sky conditions. In order to address this gap, we have evaluated an enhanced positioning system that adds little, if any, to the cost of the CV.

Usage of 2-Stroke Engines for Hybrid Vehicles

Abstract As the automotive industry moves toward electrification, battery costs and vehicle range are two large issues that will delay this movement. These issues can be partially resolved through the use of series-hybrid vehicles, which can replace a portion of the batteries with a small engine that serves to recharge the battery. Given the size, weight, and operational constraints of this engine, a 2-stroke engine makes sense. Indeed, 2-stroke engines are currently being used for a number of applications including consumer products, small ground vehicles, boats, and drones. The technology has significantly improved to allow for reduced emissions and increased efficiency, especially through the use of direct injection. This article discusses the state of technology for 2-stroke engines and its application in series-hybrid vehicles. In particular, the use of a 2-stroke engine as a range extender provides significant benefit in range and cost over fully electric vehicles.

Ultraviolet-Initiated Curing of Natural Fiber-Reinforced Acrylated Epoxidized Soybean Oil Composites

Abstract Sustainable practices are taking precedence across many industries, as evident from their shift towards the use of environmentally responsible materials, such as natural fiber-reinforced acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (NF-AESO). However, due to the lower reactivity of AESO, the curing reaction usually requires higher temperatures and longer curing time (e.g., 150°C for 6-12 h), thus making the entire process unsustainable. In this study, we demonstrate the potential power of photons towards manufacturing NF-AESO composites in a sustainable manner at room temperature (RT) within 10 min. Two photoinitiators, i.e., the 2,2-dimethoxy phenylacetophenone (DMPA) and 1-hydroxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone (HCPK), were evaluated and compared with the thermal initiator, i.e., tert-butyl perbenzoate (TBPB). Based on the mechanical performance of the AESOs, the photoinitiation system for NF-AESO was optimized.

Toward a Machine Learning Development Lifecycle for Product Certification and Approval in Aviation

Abstract This article presents a new machine learning (ML) development lifecycle which will constitute the core of the new aeronautical standard on ML called AS6983, jointly being developed by working group WG-114/G34 of EUROCAE and SAE. The article also presents a survey of several existing standards and guidelines related to ML in aeronautics, automotive, and industrial domains by comparing and contrasting their scope, purpose, and results.

Three-Dimensional Thermal Study on Lithium-Ion Batteries in a Hybrid Aircraft: Numerical and Experimental Investigations

Abstract The range of an aircraft is determined by the amount of energy that its batteries can store. Today, larger batteries are used to increase the range of electric vehicles, although energy efficiency decreases as the weight of the vehicles increases. Among the elements, lithium (Li) is the lightest and has the highest electrochemical potential. Therefore, the use of Li-ion batteries is recommended for hybrid aircraft. In addition, Li-ion batteries are the most common type of battery that is used in portable electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. However, Li-ion batteries may explode due to temperature. Therefore, the thermal analysis of Li-ion batteries was investigated both experimentally and numerically. Li-ion batteries were connected in series (the number is 9). Noboru’s theory of heat generation was discussed in the estimation of energy data.

Three Case Studies on Small Uncrewed Aerial Systems Near Midair Collisions with Aircraft: An Evidence-Based Approach for Using Objective Uncrewed Aerial Systems Detection Technology

Abstract Small uncrewed aircraft systems (sUAS) growth continues for recreational and commercial applications. By 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) predicts the sUAS fleet to number nearly 2.4 million units. As sUAS operations expand within the National Airspace System (NAS), so too does the probability of near midair collisions (NMACs) between sUAS and aircraft. Currently, the primary means of recognizing sUAS NMACs rely on pilots to visually spot and evade conflicting sUAS. Pilots may report such encounters to the FAA as UAS Sighting Reports. Sighting reports are of limited value as they are highly subjective and dependent on the pilot to accurately estimate range and altitude information. Moreover, they do not account for NMACs that an aircrew member does not spot.

Threat Identification and Defense Control Selection for Embedded Systems

Abstract Threat identification and security analysis have become mandatory steps in the engineering design process of high-assurance systems, where successful cyberattacks can lead to hazardous property damage or loss of lives. This article describes a novel approach to perform security analysis on embedded systems modeled at the architectural level. The tool, called Security Threat Evaluation and Mitigation (STEM), associates threats from the Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC) library with components and connections and suggests potential defense patterns from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Publication (SP) 800-53 security standard. This article also provides an illustrative example based on a drone package delivery system modeled in AADL.

The Missing Link: Aircraft Cybersecurity at the Operational Level

Abstract Aircraft cybersecurity efforts have tended to focus at the strategic or tactical levels without a clear connection between the two. There are many excellent engineering tools already in widespread use, but many organizations have not yet integrated and linked them into an overarching “campaign plan” that connects those tactical actions such as process hazard analysis, threat modeling, and probabilistic methods to the desired strategic outcome of secure and resilient systems. This article presents the combined systems security engineering process (CSSEP) as a way to fill that gap. Systems theory provides the theoretical foundation on which CSSEP is built. CSSEP is structured as a control loop in which the engineering team is the controller of the design process. The engineering team needs to have an explicit process model on how systems should be secured, and a control algorithm that determines what control actions should be selected.

The Lynchpin—A Novel Geometry for Modular, Tangential, Omnidirectional Flight

Abstract A novel geometry for a six degrees of freedom (6DOF) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) rotary wing aircraft is introduced and a flight mechanical analysis is conducted for an aircraft built in accordance to the thrust vectors of the proposed geometry. Furthermore, the necessary mathematical operations and control schemes are derived to fly an aircraft with the proposed geometry. A system identification of the used propulsion system with the necessary thrust reversal in the form of bidirectional motors and propellers was conducted at a whirl tower. The design of the first prototype aircraft is presented as well as the first flight test results. It could be demonstrated that an aircraft with the thrust vectors oriented according to the proposed geometry works sufficiently and offers unique maneuvering capabilities that cannot be reached with a conventional design.

The Influence of the Content and Nature of the Dispersive Filler at the Formation of Coatings for Protection of the Equipment of River and Sea Transport

Abstract To protect ship equipment of river and sea transport, it is suggested to use polymeric protective coatings based on epoxy diane oligomer ED-20, polyethylene polyamine (PEPA) curing agent and filler, which is a departure from industrial production. Thus the purpose of the work is analysis of major dependency of the properties on the content of fillers that allowed to revealed the critical filler content (furnace black) in composites to form a protective coating with the required set of characteristics. The infrared (IR) spectral analysis was used to investigate the presence of bonds on the surface of particles of the PM-75 furnace black, which allows us to assess the degree of cross-linking of the polymer. The influence of the content of dispersed furnace black on the physicomechanical and thermophysical properties and the structure of the protective coating is investigated.

The Effect of Current Mode on the Crack and Failure in the Resistance Spot Welding of the Advanced High-Strength DP590 Steel

Abstract The causes of failure due to cracking in the resistance spot welding of the advanced high-strength steels dual-phase 590 (DP590) were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy, and the tensile-shear test. The results showed that by increasing the current amount, the formation of the melting zone occurred in the heat-affected zone, leading to the cracking in this area, reducing the tensile strength and decreasing the mechanical properties; the initiation and growth of cracking and failure in this region also happened. In the heat-affected zone, by increasing the current amount with the softening phenomenon, the recrystallized coarse grains also occurred, eventually resulting in the loss of mechanical properties. The results of the tensile-shear test also indicated that by increasing the current up to 12 kA, the strength was raised, but the ductility was reduced.

Heavy commercial vehicles consist of two parts. These are the chassis area with the equipment that allows the vehicle to move and the cabin section where the driver is located. The cabin area is the most important area that ensures the highest level of driver safety. Considering that the production of trucks is increasing day by day, it is inevitable for companies to increase their R&D activities in the field of cabin and cabin suspension systems for much safer, durable, and comfortable trucks. This study aims to determine the safe torque value of the fasteners and their assembly sequence of the Cab Suspension Console, which is one of the most important connection parts in a truck and which can cause a fatal accident by breaking.

Temperature and Consumed Energy Predictions for Air-Cooled Interior Permanent Magnet Motors Driving Aviation Fans—Part 1: Mathematical Analytical Solutions for Incompressible Air Cases

Abstract The increase in worldwide awareness of environmental issues has necessitated the air transport industry to drastically reduce carbon dioxide emissions. To meet this goal, one solution is the electrification of aircraft propulsion systems. In particular, single-aisle aircraft with partial turboelectric propulsion with approximately 150 passenger seats in the 2030s are the focus. To develop a single-aisle aircraft with partial turboelectric propulsion, an air-cooled interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor with an output of 2 MW is desired. In this article, mathematical system equations that describe heat transfer inside the target air-cooled IPM motor are formulated, and their mathematical analytical solutions are obtained.
