Safety Glazing Materials—Motor Vehicles and Motor Vehicle Equipment

2005-08-22
HISTORICAL
J674_200508
All safety glazing materials used in motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment operating on land highways should comply with the requirements of the American National Standard, ANSI/SAE Z-26.1. The American National Standard for Safety Glazing Materials for Glazing Motor Vehicles and Motor Vehicle Equipment Operating on Land Highways—Safety Standard, ANSI/SAE Z-26.1-1996 is the latest complete updated version and is referred to hereafter as “the safety standard.” This SAE Recommended Practice is not intended to preclude references to any governmental law, ordinance, or regulation which might apply to the glazing of motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment operating on land highways.

STATIONARY SAFETY GLAZING REPLACEMENT

1997-07-01
HISTORICAL
J1556_199707
This SAE Recommended Practice provides guidelines for automotive vehicle glass replacement shops and their personnel in the correct replacement practices, materials, and procedures for stationary safety glazing components. The design of today’s automotive vehicles and the development of new technology can directly influence occupant safety and vehicle structural integrity. The correct installation of stationary safety glazing components can contribute directly to occupant safety and structural integrity of the vehicle.

STATIONARY GLASS REPLACEMENT

1985-12-01
HISTORICAL
J1556_198512
A relatively new method for retaining fixed glass in these vehicles is with the use of a urethane sealant. This material is used because of its ability to furnish the necessary strength by providing the required glass retention to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 212. Utilizing the glass in this manner improves the overall body structural integrity. “An intent of FMVSS No. 212 is to reduce occupant ejection allowed by windshield bond separation. Windshield bond separation rather than penetration through the glazing is the most common ejection route for fatally injured occupants who are ejected through the windshield.” (See Ref. 1.) For this reason, vehicle manufacturers that utilize a urethane bonding system for glass retention, require that any replacement glass be installed with the same type of sealant that is applied during assembly of the vehicle.

CURRENT
J2134_202003
The scope of this SAE performance standard is to provide a simple, practical, and broadly applicable test procedure for appraising luminous Illuminant A reflectance of reflecting safety glazing materials for road vehicles. This SAE performance standard, which provides a simple test procedure widely used in the optics field, may be used to measure the reflectivity which films applied to safety glazing materials for road vehicles may enhance. This test procedure applies to conditions where feasibility, rather than accuracy of measurement, is of prime importance. Measurements can be made outside laboratories in a quality control environment and in similar applications, when glazings, instead of small test specimens, have to be tested.

Intrusion Resistance of Safety Glazing Systems for Road Vehicles

2003-02-12
HISTORICAL
J2568_200302
This SAE Recommended Practice specifies an intrusion resistance test method for glazing systems installed in motor vehicles. Intrusion resistance performance is determined not solely by the glazing but also by the glazing attachment to the vehicle and by the vehicle structure. Therefore, the glazing/ attachment /vehicle structure must be tested as a single unit. This test determines intrusion resistance only. The test applies to those materials that meet the requirements for use as safety glazing materials as specified in Safety Standard ANSI/SAE Z26.1 or other applicable standards. The test applies to all installation locations.
