Supersonic Transport Fluid Evaluation Program

1965-02-01
650328
With the imminent development of the United States Mach 3 Supersonic Transport (SST), aircraft hydraulic fluid state-of-the-art must take another step forward to meet system performance requirements combined with high temperature environments. This paper presents results of pumping tests conducted by Douglas Aircraft Company, Inc., on 18 different chemical types of proposed SST hydraulic fluids comprising 50 different fluid combinations. Pump and fluid performance data are presented for all 50 fluids evaluated. A general discussion of fluid properties versus performance is also provided. Four specific fluid types are considered the best SST hydraulic fluid contenders. They are: chlorosilicone, mineral oil (super refined), perfluoroalkyl, and polyaryl.

Evaluation of Proposed Hydraulic Fluids for the SST

1966-02-01
660664
The results of pump loop testing 50 candidate supersonic transport (SST) hydraulic fluids were presented to the May 1965, SAE Aerospace Fluid Power Systems and Equipment Conference in Los Angeles. This paper presents the results of subsequent pump loop testing of nine new fluids or compoundings. A discussion of simulated fire-resistance testing is also included. Results of pump loop testing to date indicate that four specific types of fluids are considered the best SST hydraulic fluid contenders. They are: chlorosilicone, mineral oil, perfluoroalkyl, and polyaryl.
