Wear of F-16 Mainwheel Tires During Constant Slip Braking

As part of the USAF Improved Tire Life program, a study was conducted on the effect of various levels of braking on wear rates at flight loads and inflations. A skid trailer was modified to accept F-16 tires, wheels and brakes. An antiskid control box was specially built to provide any desired slip level. Tire wear rates were measured as a function of load, inflation, slip and tire construction (control and improved of both bias and radial). Wear rate increased rapidly above a threshold slip level.

Visualization of Oxidation of Soot Nanoparticles Trapped on a Diesel Particulate Membrane Filter

Through microscopic visualization experiments, a process generally known as depth filtration was shown to be caused by surface pores. Moreover, the existence of a soot cake layer was an important advantage for filtration performance because it could trap most of the particulates. We proposed an ideal diesel particulate filter (DPF), in which a silicon carbide (SiC) nanoparticle membrane (made from a mixture of 80 nm and 500 nm powders) instead of a soot cake was sintered on the DPF wall surface; this improved the filtration performance at the beginning of the trapping process and reduced energy consumption during the regeneration process. The proposed filter was called a diesel particulate membrane filter (DPMF). A diesel fuel lamp was used in the trapping process to verify the trapping and oxidation mechanisms of ultrafine particulate matter. Thus, the filtration performance of the membrane filters was shown to be better than that of conventional DPFs.

The tests are static in nature to minimize complexity and cost of required testing facilities. As far as practical, applied static loads should take into account the combined static and dynamic loads anticipated in service. It is intended that tests shall be non-destructive in nature and not result in damage unless ultimate load conditions are employed. Test equipment and methods of testing described are not meant to be restrictive. Alternate equivalent methods to accomplish the desired results may be employed. In selected cases, tests may be repeated under ultimate load conditions when required for substantiation of analytical data. If this becomes necessary, the parts deformed may be removed and replaced prior to the retest.

The development of intelligent transportation improves road efficiency, reduces automobile energy consumption, and improves driving safety. The core of intelligent transportation is the two-way information interaction between vehicles and the road environment. At present, road environmental information can flow to the vehicle, while the vehicle’s information rarely flows to the outside world. The electronic throttle and electronic braking systems of some vehicles use sensors to get the state of the accelerator and brake pedal, which can be transmitted to the outside environment through technologies such as the Internet of Vehicles. But the Internet of Vehicles technology has not been widely used, and it relies on signal sources, which is a passive way of information acquisition. In this paper, an active identification method is proposed to get the vehicle pedal on-off state as well as the driver’s operation behavior through existing traffic facilities.

The development of exhaust nozzles and their application in operational military aircraft are discussed. Prime consideration is given to installation factors such as engine bay and nozzle cooling, inlet-engine flow matching, and aerodynamic effects on external afterbody drag. Examples of various operational exhaust systems are given which show how the aircraft-exhaust nozzle characteristics are integrated to achieve maximum system compatibility and performance. Results from one flight test program are presented which show how an aircraft-exhaust nozzle system was integrated to achieve maximum installed performance.

Three significant problems with food supply in bioregenerative lifesupport systems are addressable through use of fermented foods. The quantity of inedible and marginally edible biomass can be reduced; the hedonic quality of the diet can be enhanced; and food storage constraints can be relaxed due to the superior keeping qualities of fermented products. The authors have assessed potentially available materials and fermentation processes used worldwide, to identify promising food fermentations for use in lunar and planetary stations. Conversion of inedible biomass into acceptable food may include hydrolysis of waste biomass to produce sweeteners and acidulants; fermentation of physically fractionated biomass such as leaf protein isolates into acceptable foods; mushroom cultivation on agricultural residues; and conversion of volatile fatty acids produced during waste treatment into edible microbial biomass.

Use of Butanol Blend Fuels on Diesel Engines - Effects on Combustion and Emissions

Butanol, a four-carbon alcohol, is considered in the last years as an interesting alternative fuel, both for Diesel and for gasoline application. Its advantages for engine operation are: good miscibility with gasoline and diesel fuels, higher calorific value than ethanol, lower hygroscopicity, lower corrosivity and possibility of replacing aviation fuels. Like ethanol, butanol can be produced as a biomass-based renewable fuel or from fossil sources. In the research project, DiBut (Diesel and butanol) addition of butanol to Diesel fuel was investigated from the points of view of engine combustion and of influences on exhaust aftertreatment systems and emissions. One investigated engine (E1) was with emission class “EU Stage 3A” for construction machines, another one, engine (E2) was HD Euro VI. The most important findings are: with higher butanol content, there is a lower heat value of the fuel and there is lower torque at full load.

Urea-SCR Catalysts with Improved Low Temperature Activity

Urea-SCR systems have become one effective method for meeting the ever tightening NOx emission control regulations for diesel engines. Higher activity of SCR catalysts in the low temperature region is crucial for meeting emission regulations and improving fuel economy. Some of the new catalytic components in the literature have shown good low temperature SCR activity, but they have not been fully confirmed to be durable enough for mobile applications. Fe-zeolite has been widely used in mobile applications due to its wide operating temperature window, but after exposure to large amounts of HCs at low temperatures, it is easily deactivated. We developed new SCR catalysts with improved low temperature activity and improved durability against HC fouling and thermal sintering by combining OSC (oxygen storage component) with Fe-zeolite.

The proposed UAV can be used to triangulate the areas of unnatural deforestation, by processing the areas undergoing land cover transition. Thus, restraining illegal logging and deforestation and, ultimately, facilitating the ecological succession cycle. It identifies the green cover which helps in predicting the population of the feeding animal species and the biodiversity. The system will be influential for curbing the exploitation of landscapes with heterogeneous habitats and diverse topographical features. The model employs onboard automated controller - ARDUPILOT MissionPlanner, a flight controller, GPS and telemetry module. The setup collects data from the controller such as Altitude, GPS location, Pitch, Roll, etc. and transmits it to the Ground Control Station (GCS) during cruise. The mission planner is programmed by selecting the target survey area which is divided into a grid, Home which is the launch point and Waypoints which will be crossed autonomously.

Two-Stage Electro Thermal Supported HC (Hydro Carbon) Conversion

Many diesel engines have to work at load profiles which, due to the low exhaust gas temperatures, necessitate active regeneration procedures to ensure continued engine operation and the reliability of the particulate filter. An active regeneration may be initiated via inner engine measures such as late injection. However, due to high maintenance interval and run time requirements for non-road applications the combustion of soot accumulated in the diesel particulate filter (DPF) often is realized via downstream processes. Known methods for this purpose are burner systems, systems based on downstream hydrocarbon injection (HCI) and subsequent hydrocarbon (HC)-conversion due to a catalyst or a combination of both. This paper describes an autarkic system using two-stage electro-thermal-supported hydrocarbon conversion. This system is capable to regenerate a DPF within the entire engine operating range and it is less complex than flame burner systems.
