Wear Protection of Engine Parts at High Temperatures by a Co+Cr2O3 Dispersion Coating

Co+Cr2O3 is a composite coating of a cobalt matrix with 30 percent by volume embedded Cr2O3. The coating can be applied by plating using a suspension of Cr2O3 in a cobalt electrolyte. The mechanical properties of this coating are discussed. The main attribute is the excellent wear resistance of the coating especially in the temperature range of 300 to 700°C. Adhesive wear of unplated counterparts is reduced by the same amount. In contrast to nickel the fatigue strength of Co+Cr2O3 coated Waspaloy was shown to be not influenced, when heat treated at 400°C for 16 hours. Plated engine parts demonstrate the usefulness of the Co+Cr2O3 composite coatings for wear protection.

Variable reluctance (VR) pressure sensing technology allows for a number of design features not available in many of the more common sensing techniques. Design features such as a large metallic diaphragm, relatively large diaphragm movement, magnetic sensing circuitry, high over-pressure capability, and all-welded construction (no brittle adhesives or crystals) achieve high accuracy over long term application, in very demanding environments. The VR vacuum sensor designed for the International Space Station (ISS) is a good example of where this type of sensing technique can be used where many others cannot.

If this document is used for the vacuum bagging of other than thermosetting epoxy and polyester materials, the fitness for this purpose must be determined by the user. The methods shall only be used when specified in an approved repair document or with the agreement of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) or regulatory authority.

Unsteady Stalling Characteristics of Flapping Wing Micro Aerial Vehicle

There is a serious effort to design aircraft that are as small as possible for special, limited-duration military and civil missions. These aircraft, called micro air vehicles (MAVs), are of interest because electronic surveillance and detection sensor equipment can now be miniaturized so that the entire payload mass is less than 18g. The current goal is to develop aircraft with a 15cm maximum dimension that have a mass of less than 90 g. The present study focuses on unsteady stalling characteristics of a flapping flight for different plan form models. The computational study was carried out by using FLUENT package. The results were verified with experimental values. Experiments were carried out in an open jet tabletop tunnel having test section of 350×350 mm and velocity range up to 10 m/s. Flapping actuation was generated by a newly developed rack and gear mechanism. A strain-gauge type load cell was used to measure the lift force.

There are around 1 billion tires produced each year across the globe. It is estimated that for every tire sold another joins the waste stream. This publication explores innovative alternatives available to simply disposing of tires. In fact, waste tire products have many desirable properties in key application areas from thermoplastic elastomers to road surfaces. The primary area of study of this report is the EU, but reports from the US have also been cited. Statistics are incorporated from the EU markets, which illustrate changes in the industry since the inception of the European Tire Recycling Association a decade ago.

TWO SPECIALTY APPLICATIONS for electrochemical metallizing have recently proved cost-effective and technologically sound. Aircraft engine manufacturers and maintenance facilities find nickel electrochemical metallizing an excellent way to enhance braze-ability of super alloys on turbine engines and other components. A base nickel deposit permits even brazing at lower temperatures, avoiding heat damage to adjacent honeycomb. Aluminum helicopter rotors present bonding problems, now solved by selective electrochemical anodizing. Leading edges are often covered with a hard alloy shield or a layer of synthetic rubber, bonded to the aluminum base with high-strength adhesives. Selective electrochemical anodizing leading edges of rotors guarantees adhesion vastly superior to direct bonding.
