Validating RealityCapture for Point cloud Creation Using sUAS Imagery

Creating a 3-dimensional environment using imagery from small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS, or unmanned aerial vehicles -UAVs, or colloquially, drones) has grown in popularity recently in accident reconstruction. In this process, ground control points are placed at an accident scene and an sUAS is flown over an accident site and a series of overlapping, high resolution images are taken of the site. Those images and ground control points are then loaded onto a computer and processed using photogrammetric software to create a 3-dimensional point cloud or mesh of the site, which then can be used as a tool for recreating an accident scene. Many software packages have been created to perform these tasks, and in this paper, the authors examine RealityCapture, a newer photogrammetric software, to evaluate its accuracy for the use in accident reconstruction. It is the authors’ experience that RealityCapture may at times produce point clouds with less noise that other software packages.

Examples of jobs done for the air conditioning companies, electric utilities, ski lifts, and structural steel contractors are given. With proper planning and design and with much larger helicopters coming on the market soon, a tremendous increase in construction by helicopter will take place.

The basic electromagnetic shielding of conventional riveted aluminum aircraft construction provides inherent protection to the aircraft systems and occupants against the hazards of lightning discharges. The increased use of adhesively bonded construction techniques on structures of future aircraft indicates a potential reduction in the basic electrical continuity of the airframe. The significance of the conductivity reduction on aircraft lightning protection will be evaluated for various proposed construction techniques, including: bonded honeycomb skin panels, bonded skin joints, bonded basic structure, and different types of monocoque construction. The discussion examines related problems that have been encountered in designing protection for aluminum aircraft.

This paper will discuss how the selection and specification of a motor fuel delivery truck or tractor/trailer can effect the safety of transporting, loading and unloading fuel. During these processes, several circumstances present themselves which could lead to explosion and fire. Ignition sources and component selections which minimize the danger posed by these ignition sources will be discussed. This paper applies to all MC-306 tank trucks and trailers, aircraft refueling tracks, and mobile dispensing carts using hydrant fueling systems (See Appendix 1).

Surface Fatigue Life of CBN and Vitreous Ground Carburized and Hardened AISI 9310 Spur Gears

Spur gear surface endurance tests were conducted to investigate CBN ground AISI 9310 spur gears for use in aircraft applications, to determine their endurance characteristics and to compare the results with the endurance of standard vitreous ground AISI 9310 spur gears. Tests were conducted with VIM-VAR AISI 9310 carburized and hardened gears that were finish ground with either CBN or vitreous grinding methods. Test conditions were an inlet oil temperature of 320 K (116 °F), an outlet oil temperature of 350 K (170 °F), a maximum Hertz stress of 1.71 GPa (248 ksi), and a speed of 10 000 rpm. The CBN ground gears exhibited a surface fatigue life that was slightly better than the vitreous ground gears. The subsurface residual stress of the CBN ground gears was approximately the same as that for the standard vitreous ground gears for the CBN grinding method used.

Study on Vibration Characteristics of the Towbarless Aircraft Taxiing System

Abstract The civil aircraft nosewheel is clamped, lifted, and retained through the pick-up and holding system of the towbarless towing vehicle (TLTV), and the aircraft may be moved from the parking position to an adjacent one, the taxiway, a maintenance hangar, a location near the active runway, or conversely only with the power of the TLTV. The TLTV interfacing with the nose-landing gear of civil transport aircraft for the long-distance towing operations at a high speed could be defined as a towbarless aircraft taxiing system (TLATS). The dynamic loads induced by the system vibration may cause damage or reduce the certified safe-life limit of the nose-landing gear or the TLTV when the towing speed increases up to 40 km/h during the towing operations due to the maximum ramp weight of a heavy aircraft.

Semi-Automated Vision-Based Construction of Safety Models from Engineering Drawings

The work describes a concept application that aids a safety engineer to create a layup of equipment models by using an image scan of a schematic and a library of predefined standard component and their symbols. The approach uses image recognition techniques to identify the symbols within the scanned image of the schematic from a given library of symbols. Two recognition approaches are studied, one uses General Hough Transform; the other is based on pixel-level feature computation combining both structure and statistical features. The application allows the user to accept or edit the results of the recognition step and allows the user to define new components during the layup step. The tool then generates an output file that is compatible with a formal safety modeling tool. The identified symbols are associated to behavioral nodes from a model based safety tool.
