“Taguchi Customer Loss Function” Based Functional Requirements

Understanding customer expectations is critical to satisfying customers. Holding customer clinics is one approach to set winning targets for the engineering functional measures to drive customer satisfaction. In these clinics, customers are asked to operate and interact with vehicle systems or subsystems such as doors, lift gates, shifters, and seat adjusters, and then rate their experience. From this customer evaluation data, engineers can create customer loss or preference functions. These functions let engineers set appropriate targets by balancing risks and benefits. Statistical methods such as cumulative customer loss function are regularly applied for such analyses. In this paper, a new approach based on the Taguchi method is proposed and developed. It is referred to as Taguchi Customer Loss Function (TCLF).

Virtual Switches and Indicators in Automotive Displays

This paper presents recent advances in automotive microprocessor, operating system, and supporting software technology that supports regulatory and/or functional safety graphics within vehicle cockpit displays. These graphics include “virtual switches” that replace physical switches in the vehicle, as well as “virtual indicators” that replace physical indicator lights. We discuss the functional safety design process and impacts to software and hardware architecture as well as the software design methods to implement End-To-End [E2E] network protection between different ECUs and software processes. We also describe hardware monitoring requirements within the display panel, backlighting, and touch screen and examine an example system design to illustrate the concepts.

Virtual Development of Control Coordinator for Engine and Aftertreatment Architecture Equipped with Diesel Fuel Burner

Heating devices are effective technologies to strengthen emission robustness of AfterTreatment Systems (ATS) and to guarantee emission compliance in the new boundaries given by upcoming legislations. Moreover, they allow to manage the ATS warm-up independently from engine operating conditions, thereby reducing the need for specific combustion strategies. Within heating devices, an attractive solution to provide the required thermal power without mandating a 48V platform is the fuel burner. In this work, a model-based control coordinator to manage the interaction between engine, ATS and fuel burner device has been developed, virtually validated, and optimized. The control function features a burner model and a control logic to deliver the needed amount of thermal energy, while ensuring ATS hardware protection.

Vehicle Yaw Dynamics Safety Analysis Methodology based on ISO-26262 Controllability Classification

Complex chassis systems operate in various environments such as low-mu surfaces and highly dynamic maneuvers. The existing metrics for lateral motion hazard by Neukum [13] and Amberkar [17] have been developed and correlated to driver behavior against disturbances on straight line driving on a dry surface, but do not cover low-mu surfaces and dynamic driving scenarios which include both linear and nonlinear region of vehicle operation. As a result, an improved methodology for evaluating vehicle yaw dynamics is needed for safety analysis. Vehicle yaw dynamics safety analysis is a methodical evaluation of the overall vehicle controllability with respect to its yaw motion and change of handling characteristic.

Validation of a LES Spark-Ignition Model (GLIM) for Highly-Diluted Mixtures in a Closed Volume Combustion Vessel

The establishment of highly-diluted combustion strategies is one of the major challenges that the next generation of sustainable internal combustion engines must face. The desirable use of high EGR rates and of lean mixtures clashes with the tolerable combustion stability. To this aim, the development of numerical models able to reproduce the degree of combustion variability is crucial to allow the virtual exploration and optimization of a wide number of innovative combustion strategies. In this study ignition experiments using a conventional coil system are carried out in a closed volume combustion vessel with side-oriented flow generated by a speed-controlled fan. Acquisitions for four combinations of premixed propane/air mixture quality (Φ=0.9,1.2), dilution rate (20%-30%) and lateral flow velocity (1-5 m/s) are used to assess the modelling capabilities of a newly developed spark-ignition model for large-eddy simulation (GLIM, GruMo-UniMORE LES Ignition Model).

Utilizing Finite Element Tools to Model Objective Seat Comfort Results

The comfort assessment of seats in the automotive industry has historically been accomplished by subjective ratings. This approach is expensive and time consuming since it involves multiple prototype seats and numerous people in supporting processes. In order to create a more efficient and robust method, objective metrics must be developed and utilized to establish measurable boundaries for seat performance. Objective measurements already widely accepted, such as IFD (Indentation Force Deflection) or CFD (Compression Force Deflection) [1], have significant shortcomings in defining seat comfort. The most obvious deficiency of these component level tests is that they only deal with a seats' foam rather than the system response. Consequently, these tests fail to take into account significant factors that affect seat comfort such as trim, suspension, attachments and other components.

Using Deep Learning to Predict the Engine Operating Point in Real-Time

The engine operating point (EOP), which is determined by the engine speed and torque, is an important part of a vehicle's powertrain performance and it impacts FC, available propulsion power, and emissions. Predicting instantaneous EOP in real-time subject to dynamic driver behaviour and environmental conditions is a challenging problem, and in existing literature, engine performance is predicted based on internal powertrain parameters. However, a driver cannot directly influence these internal parameters in real-time and can only accommodate changes in driving behaviour and cabin temperature. It would be beneficial to develop a direct relationship between the vehicle-level parameters that a driver could influence in real-time, and the instantaneous EOP. Such a relationship can be exploited to dynamically optimize engine performance.

Use of Active Rear Steering to Achieve Desired Vehicle Transient Lateral Dynamics

This paper studies the use of active rear steering (4-wheel steering) to change the transient lateral dynamics and body motion of passenger cars in the stable or linear region of the tires. Rear steering systems have been used for several decades to improve low speed turning maneuverability and high speed stability, and various control strategies have been previously published. With a model-based, feed-forward rear steer control strategy, the lateral transient can be influenced separately from the steady-state steering gain. This lateral transient is influenced by many vehicle parameters, but we will look at the influence of active rear steer and various tire types such as all-season, snow, and summer. This study will explore the ability for a rear steering system to change the lateral transient to a step steer input, compared to the effect of changing tire types.

Update on Gasoline Fuel Property and Gasoline Additives Impacts on Stochastic Preignition with Review of Global Market Gasoline Quality

Stochastic Preignition (SPI) is an abnormal combustion phenomenon for internal combustion engines (ICE), which has been a significant impact to automotive companies developing high efficiency, turbocharged, direct fuel injection, spark ignited engines. It is becoming clearer what fuel properties are related to the cause of SPI, whether directly with fuel preparation in the cylinder, or mechanisms related to the deposit build-up which contributes to initial and follow-on SPI events. The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of global market gasoline fuel properties with special attention given to properties and specific compounds from the fuel and fuel additives that can contribute to SPI and the deposit build-up in engines. Based on a review of the global fuel quality, it appears that the fuel quality has not caught up to meet the technology requirements for fuel economy from modern technology engines.

Torque Ripples in Electric Vehicle Drive Quality in Open and Closed Loop Control Environments

Torque ripple of electric motors is a unique feature in Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) affecting vehicle performance. It is one of the disturbances from electric motors resulting in unpleasant vehicle fore-aft vibrations at specific vehicle speeds. In this study, the torque ripple modeling and simulation procedure has been developed. Critical modeling contents in a full vehicle ADAMS model and a brief overview of the propulsion control are described. Analytical data sets for torque fluctuations (torque ripple) from a couple of different sources are incorporated in the model. The CAE simulation procedure was applied to simulate vehicle performances of a General Motors Battery Electric Vehicle in an early vehicle design phase. Torque ripple phenomena are simulated both in an open-loop and closed-loop propulsion control environment to see how much vehicle fore-aft vibration suppression is achieved by the motor control methods.

Torque Ripple Cancellation to Reduce Electric Motor Noise for Electric Vehicles

Electric motor whine is a major NVH source for electric vehicles. Traditional mitigation methods focus on e-motor hardware optimization, which requires long development cycles and may not be easily modified when the hardware is built. This paper presents a control- and software-based strategy to reduce the most dominant motor order of an IPM motor for General Motors’ Ultium electric propulsion system, using the patented active Torque Ripple Cancellation (TRC) technology with harmonic current injection. TRC improves motor NVH directly at the source level by targeting the torque ripple excitations, which are caused by the electromagnetic harmonic forces due to current ripples. Such field forces are actively compensated by superposition of a phase-shifted force of the same spatial order by using of appropriate current.

Three Dimensional Electromagnetic and NVH Analyses of Electric Motor Eccentricity to Enhance NVH Robustness for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles

Electric motor whine is one of the main noise sources of hybrid and electric vehicles. Motor air gap eccentricity due to propulsion system deflection, part tolerances and manufacturing variation is typically ignored in motor NVH design and analysis. Such eccentricity can be a dominant noise source by amplifying critical motor whine orders up to 10 dB, leading to poor NVH robustness. However, this problem cannot be explained by conventional method based on symmetric 2D approach. New 3D electromagnetic (EM) and NVH analyses are developed and validated to accurately predict air gap induced motor noise to enhance NVH robustness: First, a true 3D full 360-degree electric motor model is developed to model asymmetric air gap distribution along motor stack length. Predicted 3D EM forces are mapped to mechanical finite-element mesh over the cylindrical stator surface.

Thermomechanical Fatigue Crack Growth Simulation in a Turbo-Housing Model Using Nonlinear Fracture Mechanics

Turbocharger housings in internal combustion engines are subjected to severe mechanical and thermal cyclic loads throughout their life-time or during engine testing. The combination of thermal transients and mechanical load cycling results in a complex evolution of damage, leading to thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) of the material. For the computational TMF life assessment of high temperature components, the DTMF model can provide reliable TMF life predictions. The model is based on a short fatigue crack growth law and uses local finite-element (FE) results to predict the number of cycles to failure for a technical crack. In engine applications, it is nowadays often acceptable to have short cracks as long as they do not propagate and cause loss of function of the component. Thus, it is necessary to predict not only potential crack locations and the corresponding number of cycles for a technical crack, but also to determine subsequent crack growth or even a possible crack arrest.

Thermomechanical Fatigue Behavior of a Cast Austenitic Stainless Steel

Cast austenitic stainless steels, such as 1.4837Nb, are widely used for turbo housing and exhaust manifolds which are subjected to elevated temperatures. Due to assembly constraints, geometry limitation, and particularly high temperatures, thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) issue is commonly seen in the service of those components. Therefore, it is critical to understand the TMF behavior of the cast steels. In the present study, a series of fatigue tests including isothermal low cycle fatigue tests at elevated temperatures up to 1100°C, in-phase and out-of-phase TMF tests in the temperature ranges 100-800°C and 100-1000°C have been conducted. Both creep and oxidation are active in these conditions, and their contributions to the damage of the steel are discussed.

The Key Role of the Closed-loop Combustion Control for Exploiting the Potential of Biodiesel in a Modern Diesel Engine for Passenger Car Applications

The present paper describes the results of a cooperative research project between GM Powertrain Europe and Istituto Motori - CNR aimed at studying the capability of GM Combustion Closed-Loop Control (CLCC) in enabling seamless operation with high biodiesel blending levels in a modern diesel engine for passenger car applications. As a matter of fact, fuelling modern electronically-controlled diesel engines with high blends of biodiesel leads to a performance reduction of about 12-15% at rated power and up to 30% in the low-end torque, while increasing significantly the engine-out NOx emissions. These effects are both due to the interaction of the biodiesel properties with the control logic of the electronic control unit, which is calibrated for diesel operation. However, as the authors previously demonstrated, if engine calibration is re-tuned for biodiesel fuelling, the above mentioned drawbacks can be compensated and the biodiesel environmental inner qualities can be fully deployed.

The Development and Evaluation of Robust Combustion Systems for Miller Cycle Engines

Miller Cycle engines employ a high expansion ratio to achieve high part-load efficiency, while minimizing knock sensitivity by using valve events that limit the effective compression ratio. The Miller effect may be achieved using either early or late intake valve closure. Combustion systems for these engines must be carefully designed to obtain adequate trapped charge to achieve full-load objectives as well as charge motion characteristics supporting good mixture preparation and flame propagation. This paper summarizes the results of a holistic project tasked with developing robust combustion systems for both early and late intake valve closure strategies. Based on best practices from conventional engines and preliminary Miller cycle requirements, a series of combustion systems was designed. These were analyzed using 3-dimensional computational fluid dynamics and those showing favorable combustion characteristics were experimentally evaluated using a modular single cylinder engine.

In traditional automotive electronic design, software update has been a component oriented, manual process rather than a systematic designed in capability suitable for automation. In recent days as software content in vehicles grow, the need to update software in vehicles more frequently is becoming a necessity. Moreover, additional attributes for software updates, for example timely delivery of security related update for vehicles, desire to add features using software update, control cost of software updates, etc., requires a system engineered design rather than a component oriented approach. As the automobile domain utilizes various means of mobility (Combustion Engine, Hybrid, Battery, etc.) and various functional domains (Infotainment, Safety, Mobility, Telematics, ADAS (Advance Driving Assist service), Autonomous, etc.), to control the overall cost of future software update for such a diverse environment, it is beneficial to introduce automation in the software update process.

Study of High Speed Gasoline Direct Injection Compression Ignition (GDICI) Engine Operation in the LTC Regime

An investigation of high speed direct injection (DI) compression ignition (CI) engine combustion fueled with gasoline (termed GDICI for Gasoline Direct-Injection Compression Ignition) in the low temperature combustion (LTC) regime is presented. As an aid to plan engine experiments at full load (16 bar IMEP, 2500 rev/min), exploration of operating conditions was first performed numerically employing a multi-dimensional CFD code, KIVA-ERC-Chemkin, that features improved sub-models and the Chemkin library. The oxidation chemistry of the fuel was calculated using a reduced mechanism for primary reference fuel combustion. Operation ranges of a light-duty diesel engine operating with GDICI combustion with constraints of combustion efficiency, noise level (pressure rise rate) and emissions were identified as functions of injection timings, exhaust gas recirculation rate and the fuel split ratio of double-pulse injections.

Studies on Drivers’ Driving Styles Based on Inverse Reinforcement Learning

Although advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) have been widely introduced in automotive industry to enhance driving safety and comfort, and to reduce drivers’ driving burden, they do not in general reflect different drivers’ driving styles or customized with individual personalities. This can be important to comfort and enjoyable driving experience, and to improved market acceptance. However, it is challenging to understand and further identify drivers’ driving styles due to large number and great variations of driving population. Previous research has mainly adopted physical approaches in modeling drivers’ driving behavior, which however are often very much limited, if not impossible, in capturing human drivers’ driving characteristics. This paper proposes a reinforcement learning based approach, in which the driving styles are formulated through drivers’ learning processes from interaction with surrounding environment.

Structural Performance Comparison between 980MPa Generation 3 Steel and Press Hardened Steel Applied in the Body-in-White A and B-Pillar Parts

Commercially available Generation 3 (GEN3) advanced high strength steels (AHSS) have inherent capability of replacing press hardened steels (PHS) using cold stamping processes. 980 GEN3 AHSS is a cold stampable steel with 980 MPa minimum tensile strength that exhibits an excellent combination of formability and strength. Hot forming of PHS requires elevated temperatures (> 800°C) to enable complex deep sections. 980 GEN3 AHSS presents similar formability as 590 DP material, allowing engineers to design complex geometries similar to PHS material; however, its cold formability provides implied potential process cost savings in automotive applications. The increase in post-forming yield strength of GEN3 AHSS due to work and bake hardening contributes strongly toward crash performance in energy absorption and intrusion resistance.
