The Effects of Fuel Temperature on a Direct Injection Gasoline Spray in a Constant Volume Chamber

Fuel temperature in the injector of small direct injection gasoline engine is high. On some conditions it is higher than saturated temperature. Over saturated temperature spray characteristics greatly change. In order to predict in-cylinder phenomena accurately, it is important to understand spray behavior and mixture process above saturated temperature. Therefore spray shape, mixture formation process and Sauter mean radius were (SMR) measured in a constant volume chamber. And based on the measurement result initial spray boundary conditions were arranged so that spray characteristics over saturated temperature could be represented by using CFD code KIVA-3[1]. Moreover KIVA-3 code was combined with detailed chemical kinetics code Chemkin II to predict combustion products. [2] Calculated combustion process was validated with visualization of chemiluminescence. As a result, spray shape and penetration length have good agreement with measured ones for each fuel temperature.

Study on Burning Velocity of LPG Fuel in a Constant Volume Combustion Chamber and an SI Engine

Compared with petroleum fuel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) demonstrates advantages in low CO₂ emission. This is because of propane (C₃H₈), n-butane (n-C₄H₁₀) and i-butane (i-C₄H₁₀), which are the main components of LPG, making H/C ratio higher. In addition, LPG is suitable for high efficient operation of a spark ignition (SI) engine due to its higher research octane number (RON). Because of these advantages, that is, diversity of energy source and reduction of CO₂, in the past several years, LPG vehicles have widely been used as the alternate gasoline vehicles all over the world. Consequently, it is absolutely essential for the performance increase in LPG vehicles to comprehend combustion characteristics of LPG. In this study, the differences of laminar burning velocity between C₃H₈, n-C4H10, i-C₄H₁₀ and regular gasoline were evaluated experimentally with the use of a constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC).

Study of Knock Control in Small Gasoline Engines by Multi-Dimensional Simulation

To suppress knock in small gasoline engines, the coolant flow of a single-cylinder engine was improved by using two methods: a multi-dimensional knock prediction method combining a Flamelet model with a simple chemical kinetics model, and a method for predicting combustion chamber wall temperature based on a thermal fluid calculation that coupled the engine coolant and the engine structure (engine head, cylinder block, and head gasket). Through these calculations as well as the measurement of wall temperatures and the analysis of combustion by experiments, the effects of wall temperature distribution and consequent unburnt gas temperature distribution on knock onset timing and location were examined. Furthermore, a study was made to develop a method for cooling the head side, which was more effective to suppress knock: the head gasket shape was modified to change the coolant flow and thereby improve the distribution of wall temperatures on the head side.

Studies on Spray and Combustion Characteristics of Throttle Type Nozzle Used in a Swirl-Chamber Diesel Engine

Among industrial engines, vortex chamber diesel engines are mainly used in small engines with output of less than 19 kW, and they employ an indirect injection system in which fuel is injected into a sub-chamber called a vortex chamber. The throttle-type nozzle used in swirl-chamber diesel engines is expected to change its spraying behavior depending on ambient conditions because the pressure fluctuations in the nozzle cause the needle valve to lift, and the injection amount is controlled by the amount of lift of the needle valve. In addition, the dimensions of the vortex chamber of a vortex chamber diesel engine are smaller than the spray development distance, and wall impingement of the spray is expected. In this study, spraying and combustion experiments were conducted using a constant volume chamber to understand the behavior of the spray from a throttle-type nozzle.

Reaction Path Analysis and Modeling of NOx Reduction in a Cu-chabazite SCR Catalyst Considering Cu Redox Chemistry and Reversible Hydrolysis of Cu Sites

In this study, reaction path analysis and modeling of NOx reduction phenomena by selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with NH3 over a Cu-chabazite catalyst were conducted considering changes in the valence state of Cu sites and local structure due to differences in ligands to the Cu sites. The analysis showed that in the Cu-chabazite catalyst, NOx was mainly reduced by adsorbed NH3 on divalent Cu sites accompanied by a change in valence state of Cu from divalent to monovalent. It is known that the activation energy of NOx reduction on a Cu-chabazite catalyst changes between low temperatures ≤ 200 °C and mid to high temperatures ≥ 300 °C. To express this phenomenon, a reversible hydrolysis reaction based on the difference in coordination state of hydroxyl groups (OH−) to Cu sites at low and high temperatures was introduced into the model.

Reaction Analysis and Modeling of Fast SCR in a Cu-Chabazite SCR Catalyst Considering Generation and Decomposition of Ammonium Nitrate

In this study, reaction path analysis and modeling of NOx reduction phenomena by fast SCR reaction on a Cu-chabazite catalyst were conducted, considering the formation and decomposition of ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3). White crystals of NH4NO3 decompose at temperatures < 200 °C. Thus, the reaction behavior changes at 200 °C under fast SCR reaction conditions. NH4NO3 formation can occur on both Cu sites and Brønsted acid sites, which are active sites for NOx reduction in the Cu-chabazite catalyst, but it is unclear where NH4NO3 accumulates on the catalyst. Analyses using catalyst test pieces with different active sites were performed to estimate this accumulation. The results suggested that NH4NO3 accumulation does not depend on the presence of either Cu sites or Brønsted acid sites. Therefore, it is assumed that NH4NO3 can be accumulated everywhere on the catalyst, including on the zeolite framework. This phenomenon was included in the model as formation/accumulation sites S'.

Optimization of Exhaust Pipe Injection Conditions for Diesel Oxidation

In a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and Catalyzed Soot Filter (CSF) system, the DOC is used to oxidize additional fuel injected into the cylinder and/or exhaust pipe in order to increase the CSF's inlet temperature during soot regeneration. The catalyst's hydrocarbon (HC) oxidation performance is known to be strongly affected by the HC species present and the catalyst design. However, the engine operating conditions and additive fuel supply parameters also affect the oxidation performance of DOCs, but the effects of these variables have been insufficiently examined. Therefore, in this study, the oxidation performance of a DOC was examined in experiments in which both exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) levels and exhaust pipe injection parameters were varied. The results were then analyzed and optimal conditions were identified using modeFRONTIER.

Numerical Studies on Temporal and Spatial Distribution of Equivalence Ratio in Diesel Combustion Using Large Eddy Simulation

To identify ways of achieving good mixture formation and heat release in diesel spray combustion, we have performed Large Eddy Simulation (LES) using a detailed chemical reaction mechanism to study the temporal and spatial distribution of the local equivalence ratios and heat release rate. Here we characterize the effect of the fuel injection rate profile on these processes in the combustion chamber of a diesel engine. Two injection rate profiles are considered: a standard (STD) profile, which is a typical modern common rail injection profile, and the inverse delta (IVD) profile, which has the potential to suppress rich mixture formation in the spray tip region. Experimental data indicate that the formation of such mixtures may extend the duration of the late combustion period and thus reduce thermal efficiency.

Numerical Optimization of Parameters to Improve Thermal Efficiency of a Spark-Ignited Natural Gas Engine

Natural gas is a promising alternative fuel for internal combustion engines because of its clean combustion characteristics and abundant reserves. However, it has several disadvantages due to its low energy density and low thermal efficiency at low loads. Thus, to assist efforts to improve the thermal efficiency of spark-ignited (SI) engines operating on natural gas and to minimize test procedures, a numerical simulation model was developed to predict and optimize the performance of a turbocharged test engine, considering flame propagation, occurrence of knock and ignition timing. The numerical results correlate well with empirical data, and show that increasing compression ratios and retarding the intake valve closing (IVC) timing relative to selected baseline conditions could effectively improve thermal efficiency. In addition, employing moderate EGR ratios is also effective for avoiding knock.

Modeling and Controlling Active Regeneration of a Diesel Particulate Filter

Heavy soot deposition in wall-flow type diesel particulate filters reduces engine output and fuel efficiency. This necessitates forced regeneration to oxidize soot via exothermic reactions in a diesel oxidation catalyst upstream of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Soot loading in the wall of the DPF during forced regeneration causes much greater pressure drops than cake deposition, which is undesirable because high pressure drops reduce engine performance. We show that the description of soot deposition using a DPF model is improved by using a shrinking sphere soot oxidation sub-model. We then use this revised model to analyze cake deposition during forced regeneration, and to study the effects of varying the forced regeneration temperature and duration on the local soot reaction rate and soot mass distribution in the radial and longitudinal directions of the DPF channels during forced regeneration.

Kinetic Modeling of Ammonia-SCR and Experimental Studies over Monolithic Cu-ZSM-5 Catalyst

Ammonia-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems have been introduced commercially in diesel vehicles, however catalyst systems with higher conversion efficiency and better control characteristics are required to know the actual emissions during operation and the emissions in random test cycles. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is an effective approach when applied to SCR catalyst development, and many models have been proposed, but these models need experimental verification and are limited in the situations they apply to. Further, taking account of redox cycle is important to have better accuracy in transient operation, however there are few models considering the cycle. Model development considering the redox reactions in a zeolite catalyst, Cu-ZSM-5, is the object of the research here, and the effects of exhaust gas composition on the SCR reaction and NH3 oxidation at high temperatures are investigated.

Influence of Diesel Post Injection Timing on HC Emissions and Catalytic Oxidation Performance

For diesel emission control systems containing a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and a Catalyzed Soot Filter (CSF) the DOC is used to oxidize the additional fuel injected into the cylinder and/or the exhaust pipe for the purpose of increasing the CSF inlet temperature during the soot regeneration. Hydrocarbon (HC) oxidation performance of the DOC is affected by HC species as well as a catalyst design, i.e., precious metal species, support materials and additives. How engine-out HC species vary as a function of fuel supply conditions is not well understood. In addition, the relationship between catalyst design and oxidation activity of different hydrocarbon species requires further study. In this study, diesel fuel was supplied by in-cylinder, post injection and exhaust HC species were measured by a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and a gas analyzer. The post injection timing was set to either 73°, 88° or 98° ATDC(after top dead center).

Experimental and Simulation Analysis of Spray and Combustion Characteristics in a Swirl-Chamber Diesel Engine

A swirl-chamber diesel engine has an indirect injection system in which fuel is injected into a pre-chamber called the swirl-chamber that is separated from the main chamber. Indirect fuel injection systems can be directly mechanically controlled by the camshaft, which is cheaper than electronic control. For these reasons, they are used in diverse industrial applications and automobiles. However, optimization of the swirl-chamber shape and performance tests have been mainly experimental, and there has been insufficient verification of the accuracy of simulations. Thus, we have attempted to verify simulations using a rapid compression and expansion machine that can reproduce the combustion in one engine cycle, with a chamber like a swirl chamber in the cylinder head to visualize the behavior of evaporative sprays and the combustion process. In this study, the authors focused on the wall impingement of the fuel spray and took photos of its liquid phase and ignition.

Effects of Soot Deposition on NOx Purification Reaction and Mass Transfer in a SCR/DPF Catalyst

Experimental studies were carried out to investigate the effect of soot deposition on NOx purification phenomena in an ammonia selective catalytic reduction coated diesel particulate filter (SCR/DPF) catalyst. To study soot deposition effects on the chemical reactions and mass transfer, two types of testing device were used. A synthetic gas bench enabling tests to be conducted with temperature and flow rate ranges relevant to real driving conditions was used to investigate the soot influence on reduction of NOx to N2 (DeNOx). A micro-reactor that removed the effect of soot deposition on mass transfer in the catalyst layer was used to analyze chemical reactions on a soot surface and their interaction with the SCR catalyst. A filter test brick of a Cu-zeolite SCR/DPF catalyst and a powder catalyst were used for the synthetic gas bench and micro-reactor tests, respectively. Engine soot was sampled in all the tests.

Effect of Ethanol on Knock in Spark Ignition Gasoline Engines

This study examines the effects of ethanol content on engine performances and the knock characteristics in spark ignition gasoline engine under various compression ratio conditions by cylinder pressure analysis, visualization and numerical simulation. The results confirm that increasing the ethanol content provides for greater engine torque and thermal efficiency as a result of the improvement of knock tolerance. It was also confirmed that increasing the compression ratio together with increasing ethanol content is effective to overcome the shortcomings of poor fuel economy caused by the low calorific value of ethanol. Further, the results of one dimensional flame propagation simulation show that ethanol content increase laminar burning velocity. Moreover, the results of visualization by using a bore scope demonstrate that ethanol affects the increase of initial flame propagation speed and thus helps suppress knock.

Controlling Combustion Characteristics Using a Slit Nozzle in a Direct-Injection Methanol Engine

A new type of fuel injection nozzle, called a “slit nozzle,” has been developed to improve poor ignitability and to stabilize combustion under low load conditions in direct-injection methanol diesel engines manufactured for medium-duty trucks. This nozzle has a single oblong vent like a slit. Engine test results indicate that the slit nozzle can improve combustion and thermal efficiency, especially at low loads and no load. This can be explained by the fact that the slit nozzle forms a more highly concentrated methanol spray around the glow-plug than do multi-hole nozzles. As a result, this nozzle improves flame propagation.

Control Strategy for Urea-SCR System in Single Step Load Transition

Urea-SCR system has a high NOx reduction potential in the steady-state diesel engine operation. In complicated transient operations, however, there are certain problems with the urea-SCR system in that NOx reduction performance degrades and adsorbed NH3 would be emitted. Here, optimum urea injection methods and exhaust bypass control to overcome these problems are studied. This exhaust bypass control enables NO/NOx ratio at the inlet of SCR catalyst to be decreased widely, which prevents over production of NO2 at the pre-oxidation catalyst. Steady-state and simple transient engine tests were conducted to clarify NOx reduction characteristics when optimum urea injection pattern and exhaust bypass control were applied. In simple transient test, only the engine load was rapidly changed for obtaining the fundamental knowledge concerning the effect of those techniques.

Computational Study to Improve Thermal Efficiency of Spark Ignition Engine

The objective of this paper is to investigate the potential of lean burn combustion to improve the thermal efficiency of spark ignition engine. Experiments used a single cylinder gasoline spark ignition engine fueled with primary reference fuel of octane number 90, running at 4000 revolution per minute and at wide open throttle. Experiments were conducted at constant fueling rate and in order to lean the mixture, more air is introduced by boosted pressure from stoichiometric mixture to lean limit while maintaining the high output engine torque as possible. Experimental results show that the highest thermal efficiency is obtained at excess air ratio of 1.3 combined with absolute boosted pressure of 117 kPa. Three dimensional computational fluid dynamic simulation with detailed chemical reactions was conducted and compared with results obtained from experiments as based points.

This paper describes a method for estimating constants related to NH3 gas diffusion phenomena to the active sites in a selective catalytic reduction diesel particulate filter (SCR/DPF) catalyst. A simple one-dimensional NH3 gas diffusion model based on the pore structure inside the catalyst was developed and used to estimate the intracrystalline diffusion coefficient. It was shown that the estimated value agreed well with experimental data.

Analysis and Modeling of NOx Reduction Based on the Reactivity of Cu Active Sites and Brønsted Acid Sites in a Cu-Chabazite SCR Catalyst

The NOx-reducing activity of a Cu-chabazite selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst was analyzed over a wide temperature range. The analysis was based on the ammonia SCR (NH3-SCR) mechanism and accounted for Cu redox chemistry and reactions at Brønsted acid sites. The reduction of NOx to N2 (De-NOx) at Cu sites was found to proceed via different paths at low and high temperatures. Consequently, the rate-limiting step of the SCR reaction at Cu sites varied with the temperature. The rate of NOx reduction at Cu sites below 200°C was determined by the rate of Cu oxidation. Conversely, the rate of NOx reduction above 300°C was determined by the rate of NH3 adsorption on Cu sites. Moreover, the redox state of the active Cu sites differed at low and high temperatures. To clarify the role of the chabazite Brønsted acid sites, experiments were also performed using a H-chabazite catalyst that lacks Cu sites.
