A Linear Parameter Varying Combined with Divide-and-Conquer Approach to Thermal System Modeling of Battery Modules

A linear parameter varying (LPV) reduced order model (ROM) is used to approximate the volume-averaged temperature of battery cells in one of the modules of the battery pack with varying mass flow rate of cooling fluid using uniform heat source as inputs. The ROM runs orders of magnitude faster than the original CFD model. To reduce the time it takes to generate training data, used in building LPV ROM, a divide-and-conquer approach is introduced. This is done by dividing the battery module into a series of mid-cell and end-cell units. A mid-cell unit is composed of a cooling channel sandwiched in between two half -cells. A half-cell has half as much heat capacity as a full-cell. An end-cell unit is composed of a cooling channel sandwiched in between full-cell and a half-cell. A mass flow rate distribution look-up-table is generated from a set of steady-state simulations obtained by running the full CFD model at different inlet manifold mass flow rate samples.

A Three-Layer Model for Ice Crystal Icing in Aircraft Engines

This paper presents the current state of a three-layer surface icing model for ice crystal icing risk assessment in aircraft engines, being developed jointly by Ansys and Honeywell to account for possible heat transfer from inside an engine into the flow path where ice accretion occurs. The bottom layer of the proposed model represents a thin metal sheet as a substrate surface to conductively transfer heat from an engine-internal reservoir to the ice layer. The middle layer is accretion ice with a porous structure able to hold a certain amount of liquid water. A shallow water film layer on the top receives impinged ice crystals. A mass and energy balance calculation for the film determines ice accretion rate. Water wicking and recovery is introduced to transfer liquid water between film layer and porous ice accretion layer.

Accurate and Dynamic Accounting of Fuel Composition in Flame Propagation During Engine Simulations

A methodology has been implemented to calculate local turbulent flame speeds for spark ignition engines accurately and on-the-fly in 3-D CFD modeling. The approach dynamically captures fuel effects, based on detailed chemistry calculations of laminar flame speeds. Accurately modeling flame propagation is critical to predicting heat release rates and emissions. Fuels used in spark ignition engines are increasingly complex, which necessitates the use of multi-component fuels or fuel surrogates for predictive simulation. Flame speeds of the individual components in these multi-component fuels may vary substantially, making it difficult to define flame speed values, especially for stratified mixtures. In addition to fuel effects, a wide range of local conditions of temperature, pressure, equivalence ratio and EGR are expected in spark ignition engines.

Aerodynamic Optimization of Vehicle Configuration Based on Adjoint Method

Due to the increasingly stringent environmental regulations all around the world confronted by exhaust emission and energy consumption, improving fuel economy has been the top priority for most automotive manufacturers. In this context, the basic process for vehicle shape development has evolved into optimizing the design to achieve better aerodynamic characteristics, especially drag reduction. Of all the optimization approaches, the gradient-based adjoint method has currently received extensive attention for its high efficiency in calculating the objective sensitivity with respect to geometry parameters, which is the first and foremost step for subsequent shape modification. In this work, the main goal is to explore the adjoint method through optimizing the vehicle shape for a lower drag based on a production SUV. Firstly, the influence of different mesh schemes was discussed on sensitivity prediction of aerodynamic drag.

An Eulerian Approach with Mesh Adaptation for Highly Accurate 3D Droplet Dynamics Simulations

Two main approaches are available when studying droplet dynamics for in-flight icing simulations: the Lagrangian approach, in which each droplet trajectory is integrated until it impacts the vehicle under study or when it leaves it behind without impact, and the Eulerian approach, where the droplet dynamics is solved as a continuum. In both cases, the same momentum equations are solved. Each approach has its advantages. In 2D, the Lagrangian approach is easy to code and it is very efficient, particularly when used in combination with a panel method flow solver. However, it is a far less practical approach for 3D simulations, particularly on complex geometries, as it is not an easy task to accurately determine the droplet seeding region without a great number of droplet trajectories, dramatically increasing the computing cost. Converting the impact locations into a water collection distribution is also a complex task, since droplet trajectories in 3D can follow convoluted paths.

An Ice Shedding Model for Rotating Components

A CFD simulation methodology is presented to evaluate the ice that sheds from rotating components. The shedding detection is handled by coupling the ice accretion and stress analysis solvers to periodically check for the propagation of crack fronts and possible detachment. A novel approach for crack propagation is highlighted where no change in mesh topology is required. The entire computation from flow to impingement, ice accretion and crack analysis only requires a single mesh. The accretion and stress module are validated individually with published data. The analysis is extended to demonstrate potential shedding scenarios on three complex industrially-relevant 3D cases: a helicopter blade, an engine fan blade and a turboprop propeller. The largest shed fragment will be analyzed in the context of FOD damage to neighboring aircraft/component surfaces.

An Investigation of CutCell Meshing Strategies for Accurate Aerodynamic Performance Prediction

With advances in computing power and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) algorithms, the complexity of CutCell based simulation models has significantly increased. In this study three dimensional numerical simulations were created for steady incompressible flow around airfoil shape. The NACA-0012 airfoil was used for this study. Boundary layer thickness, mesh expansion ratio, and mesh density variation parameters were investigated. Drag and lift coefficients were compared to experimental data. Use of the CutCell method results in a good agreement between CFD results and experimental data.

Automation of Vehicle Aerodynamic Shape Exploration and Optimization using Integrated Mesh Morphing and CFD

Thorough design exploration is essential for improving vehicle performance in various aspects such as aerodynamic drag. Shape optimization algorithms in combination with computational tools such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) play an important role in design exploration. The present work describes a Free-Form Deformation (FFD) approach implemented within a general purpose CFD code for parameterization and modification of the aerodynamic shape of real-life vehicle models. Various vehicle shape parameters are constructed and utilized to change the shape of a vehicle using a mesh morphing technique based on the FFD algorithm. Based on input and output parameters, a design of experiments (DOE) matrix is created. CFD simulations are run and a response surface is constructed to study the sensitivity of the output parameter (aerodynamic drag) to variations in each input parameter.

One of the best tools to explore complicated in-cylinder physics is computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In order to assess the accuracy and reliability of the CFD simulations, it is critical to perform validation studies over different engine operating conditions. Simulation-based design of SI engines requires predictive capabilities, where results do not need to be tuned for each operating condition. This requires the models adopted to simulate their respective engine physics to be reliable under a broad range of conditions. A detailed set of experimental data was obtained to validate the CFD predictions of SI engine combustion.

CFD Modeling of Spark Ignited Gasoline Engines- Part 2: Modeling the Engine in Direct Injection Mode along with Spray Validation

Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) is a key technology in the automotive industry for improving fuel economy and performance of gasoline internal combustion engines. GDI engine performance and emission characteristics are mainly determined by the complex interaction of in-cylinder flow, mixture formation and subsequent combustion processes. In a GDI engine, mixture formation depends on spray characteristics. Spray evolution and mixture formation is critical to GDI engine operation. In this work, a multi-component surrogate fuel blend was used to represent the chemical and physical properties of the gasoline employed in the experimental engine tests. Multi-component spray models were also validated in this study against experimental spray injection measurements in a chamber. The spray-chamber data include spray-penetration lengths, transient spray velocities and droplet Sauter mean diameter (SMD) at different axial and radial distances from the spray tip, obtained using a PDPA system.

CFD Modelling of the Effects of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Injection Timing on Diesel Combustion and Emissions

Emissions from Diesel engines have been a major concern for many years, particularly with regards to the impact of NOx and particulate matter on human health. Exhaust gas re-circulation (EGR) is a widely used method in diesel engines for controlling NOx production. While EGR rates can be varied to ensure engine performance and reduce NOx emissions, EGR also influences the ignition delay, reduces the peak combustion temperature and increases particulate emissions. Moreover, the injection timing directly affects NOx and particulate emissions under the broad and highly variable operating conditions. An effective CFD-based design tool for diesel engines must therefore include robust and accurate predictive capabilities for combustion and pollutant formation, to address the complex design tradeoffs. The objective of the present study is to evaluate CFD modeling of diesel engine combustion and emissions for various combinations of EGR rates and injection timings.

CFD-Based Shape Optimization for Optimal Aerodynamic Design

Increased energy costs make optimal aerodynamic design even more critical today as even small improvements in aerodynamic performance can result in significant savings in fuel costs. Energy conscious industries like transportation (aviation and ground based) are particularly affected. There have been a number of different optimization methods, some of which require geometrically parameterized models. For non-parameterized models (as it is the case often in reality where models and shapes are very complex). Shape optimization and adjoin solvers are some of the latest approaches. In our study we are focusing on generating best practices and investigating different strategies of employing the commercially available shape optimizer tool from ANSYS'CFD solver Fluent. The shape optimizer is based on a polynomial mesh-morphing algorithm. The simple case of a low speed, airfoil/flap combination is used as a case study with the objective being the lift to drag ratio.

Capturing Combustion Chemistry of Carbon-Neutral Transportation Fuels with a Library of Model Fuels

Carbon-neutral (CN) fuels will be part of the solution to reducing global warming effects of the transportation sector, along with electrification. CN fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, biofuels, and e-fuels can play a primary role in some segments (aviation, shipping, heavy-duty road vehicles) and a secondary role in others (light-duty road vehicles). The composition and properties of these fuels vary substantially from existing fossil fuels. Fuel effects on performance and emissions are complex, especially when these fuels are blended with fossil fuels. Predictively modeling the combustion of these fuels in engine and combustor CFD simulations requires accurate representation of the fuel blends. We discuss a methodology for matching the targeted fuel properties of specific CN fuels, using a blend of surrogate fuel components, to form a fuel model that can accurately capture fuel effects in an engine simulation.

Design Optimization of Vehicle Muffler Transmission Loss using Hybrid Method

This study presents an efficient process to optimize the transmission loss of a vehicle muffler by using both experimental and analytical methods. Two production mufflers were selected for this study. Both mufflers have complex partitions and one of them was filled with absorbent fiberglass. CAD files of the mufflers were established for developing FEA models in ANSYS and another commercial software program (CFEA). FEA models were validated by experimental measurements using a two-source method. After the models were verified, sensitivity studies of design parameters were performed to optimize the transmission loss (TL) of both mufflers. The sensitivity study includes the perforated hole variations, partition variations and absorbent material insertion. The experimental and sensitivity analysis results are included in the paper.

Development and Validation of a Reduced Chemical Kinetic Mechanism of Dimethyl Carbonate and Ethylene Carbonate

With the rapid development of electric vehicles, the demands for lithium-ion batteries and advanced battery technologies are growing. Today, lithium-ion batteries mainly use liquid electrolytes, containing organic compounds such as dimethyl carbonate and ethylene carbonate as solvents for the lithium salts. However, when thermal runaway occurs, the electrolyte decomposes, venting combustible gases that could readily be ignited when mixed with air and leading to pronounced heat release from the combustion of the mixture. So far, the chemical behavior of electrolytes during thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries is not comprehensively understood. Well-validated compact chemical kinetic mechanisms of the electrolyte components are required to describe this process in CFD simulations. In this work, submechanisms of dimethyl carbonate and ethylene carbonate were developed and adopted in the Ansys Model Fuel Library (MFL).

Electromagnetics, Structural Harmonics and Acoustics Coupled Simulation on the Stator of an Electric Motor

Electric motors and generators produce vibrations and noise associated with many physical mechanisms. In this study, we look at the vibrations and noise produced by the transient electromagnetic forces on the stator of a permanent magnet motor. In the first stage, electromagnetic simulation is carried out to calculate the forces per tooth segment of the stator. The harmonic orders of the electromagnetic forces are then calculated using Fourier analysis, and forces are mapped to the mechanical harmonic analysis of the second stage. As a third stage, the vibrations of the structure are used to drive the boundary of acoustic domain to predict the noise. Finally, optimization studies are made over the complete system to improve the motor design and reduce noise. A simulation environment (ANSYS Workbench) is used to integrate a seamless workflow.

Evaluation and Validation of Large-Eddy-Simulation (LES) for Gas Jet and Sprays

Large-eddy simulation (LES) is a useful approach for the simulation of turbulent flow and combustion processes in internal combustion engines. This study employs the ANSYS Forte CFD package and explores several key and fundamental components of LES, namely, the subgrid-scale (SGS) turbulence models, the numerical schemes used to discretize the transport equations, and the computational mesh. The SGS turbulence models considered include the classic Smagorinsky model and a dynamic structure model. Two numerical schemes for momentum convection, quasi-second-order upwind (QSOU) and central difference (CD), were evaluated. The effects of different computational mesh sizes controlled by both fixed mesh refinement and a solution-adaptive mesh-refinement approach were studied and compared. The LES models are evaluated and validated against several flow configurations that are critical to engine flows, in particular, to fuel injection processes.

Flow Simulations around a Generic Ground Transportation System: Using Immersed Boundary Method

The purpose of present study is to use Immersed Boundary (IB) method in flow field simulations of a simplified generic ground transportation system (GTS) at 0° yaw. The IB method is usually employed in conjunction with a body non-conforming Cartesian grid. Thus, grid generation is greatly simplified. This plays an important role in reducing the cost and time in design process. This paper demonstrates the ease of use of IB method compared to body fitted mesh method and possible use of IB method to automate the external aerodynamics simulations. Also in order to assess the accuracy, the results are compared with corresponding experimental data reported in literature.

IMPACT: Numerical Study of Aerodynamics of an Iced Forward-Swept Tail with Leading Edge Extension

In-flight icing significantly influences the design of large passenger aircraft. Relevant aspects include sizing of the main aerodynamic surfaces, provision of anti-icing systems, and setting of operational restrictions. Empennages of large passenger aircraft are particularly affected due to the small leading edge radius, and the requirement to generate considerable lift for round out and flare, following an extended period of descent often in icing conditions. This paper describes a CFD-based investigation of the effects of sweep on the aerodynamic performance of a novel forward-swept horizontal stabilizer concept in icing conditions. The concept features an unconventional forward sweep, combined with a high lift leading edge extension (LEX) located within a fuselage induced droplet shadow zone, providing passive protection from icing.

Icing Simulation Results Using Lagrangian Particle Tracking in Ansys Fluent Icing

This paper introduces the Lagrangian particle tracking technology readily available in Ansys Fluent in the in-flight icing simulation workflow, which normally uses the Eulerian approach for droplet flows. The Lagrangian solver is incorporated in the Fluent Icing workspace which is to become the next-gen in-flight icing simulation tool provided by Ansys. Lagrangian tracking will eventually be used for SLD and ice crystal rebound and re-impingement calculations in the Ansys workflow. Here we introduce some preliminary results with the current state of its implementation as of Fluent Icing release 2023R2. Example cases include several selections from the 1st Ice prediction workshop with experimental comparisons as well as results obtained earlier with the Eulerian droplet solution strategy. Collection efficiency comparisons on clean geometries show good agreement between Eulerian and Lagrangian methods when the particle seeds are in the millions range.
