3-D LDV Measurement of In-Cylinder Air Flow in a 3.5L Four-Valve SI Engine

In-cylinder flows in a motored four-valve SI engine were examined by simultaneous three-component LDV measurement. The purpose of this study was to develop better physical understanding of in-cylinder flows and quantitative methods which correlate in-cylinder flows to engine performance. This study is believed to be the first simultaneous three-component LDV measurement of the air flow over a planar section of a four-valve piston-cylinder assembly. Special attention is paid to the tumble formation process, three-dimensional turbulent kinetic energy, and measurement of the tumble ratio. The influence of the induction system and the piston geometry are believed to have a significant effect on the in-cylinder flow characteristics. Using LDV measurement, the flows in two different piston top geometries were examined. One axial plane was selected to observe the effect of piston top geometries on the flow field in the combustion chamber.

A new electronically controlled transaxle has been put into production for Chrysler's family of LH cars. Among the attributes of this new transaxle are its ability to handle engines of high torque and high power coupled with high-speed shifts. Engine torque management is used in specific operating regimes. A feature of the transaxle is electronic modulation of the converter clutch. A number of logic features have been combined with hardware to provide good performance and shift quality over a wide operating range. An output transfer chain and a hypoid gear set are used to provide torque to the front wheels in a longitudinal power train orientation. Obtaining acceptable endurance life of the hypoid gears within an aluminum housing presented a significant challenge. New approaches were required to provide a chain-sprocket system with acceptable noise characteristics.

A Demonstration of Simultaneous Infrared and Visible Imaging Techniques with Pressure Data in an Optically Accessible Diesel Engine Operating at Part Load with High EGR

This work presents a method for simultaneously capturing visible and infrared images along with pressure data in an optical Diesel engine based on the International 4.5L VT275 engine. This paper seeks to illustrate the merits of each imaging technique for visualizing both in-cylinder fuel spray and combustion. The engine was operated under a part load, high simulated exhaust gas recirculation operating condition. Experiments examining fuel spray were conducted in nitrogen. Overlays of simultaneously acquired infrared and visible images are presented to illustrate the differences in imaging between the two techniques. It is seen that the infrared images spatially describe the fuel spray, especially fuel vapors, and the fuel mixing process better than the high-speed visible images.

A Review of Pre-Chamber Initiated Jet Ignition Combustion Systems

This paper reviews progress on turbulent jet ignition systems for otherwise standard spark ignition engines, with focus on small prechamber systems (≺3% of clearance volume) with auxiliary pre-chamber fueling. The review covers a range of systems including early designs such as those by Gussak and Oppenheim and more recent designs proposed by General Motors Corporation, FEV, Bosch and MAHLE Powertrain. A major advantage of jet ignition systems is that they enable very fast burn rates due to the ignition system producing multiple, distributed ignition sites, which consume the main charge rapidly and with minimal combustion variability. The locally distributed ignition sites allow for increased levels of dilution (lean burn/EGR) when compared to conventional spark ignition combustion. Dilution levels are comparable to those reported in recent homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) systems.

The true output of racing engines is normally a closely guarded secret. This is particularly so in Formula One. Also, the consistency of output between engines of identical specifications is of interest to all those involved. This paper outlines a study that was done on the 1993 3.5L Chrysler-Lamborghini CL-01 Formula 1 Engine, and will cover: The output variation of one specific engine configuration/fuel combination over the course of the season, The output variation of a second build/fuel combination over a significant number of builds, The output improvements due to fuels, The output changes due to mechanical developments during the season. The paper will also show that if engine output has been designated as one of the criteria for accepting or rejecting an engine, very small differences in either the acceptable level of performance or the recorded output can make a very significant difference to the number of engines rejected.

An Electronically Tunable Resonator for Noise Control

Many engineering systems create unwanted noise that can be reduced by the careful application of engineering noise controls. When this noise travels down tubes and pipes, a tuned resonator can be used to muffle noise escaping from the tube. The classical examples are automobile exhaust and ventilation system noise. In these cases where a narrow frequency band of noise exists, a traditional engineering control consists of adding a tuned Helmholtz resonator to reduce unwanted tonal noise by reflecting it back to the source (Temkin, 1981). As long as the frequency of the unwanted noise falls within the tuned resonator frequency range, the device is effective. However, if the frequency of the unwanted sound changes to a frequency that does not match the tuned resonator frequency, the device is no longer effective. Conventional resonators have fixed tuning and cannot effectively muffle tonal noise with time-varying frequency.

An Evaluation of Turbulent Kinetic Energy for the In-Cylinder Flow of a Four-Valve 3.5L SI Engine Using 3-D LDV Measurements

A better understanding of turbulent kinetic energy is important for improvement of fuel-air mixing, which can lead to lower emissions and reduced fuel consumption. An in-cylinder flow study was conducted using 1548 Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) measurements inside one cylinder of a 3.5L four-valve engine. The measurement method, which simultaneously collects three-dimensional velocity data through a quartz cylinder, allowed a volumetric evaluation of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) inside an automotive engine. The results were animated on a UNIX workstation, using a 3D wireframe model. The data visualization software allowed the computation of TKE isosurfaces, and identified regions of higher turbulence within the cylinder. The mean velocity fields created complex flow patterns with symmetries about the center plane between the two intake valves. High levels of TKE were found in regions of high shear flow, attributed to the collisions of intake flows.

In-cylinder flows in four-valve SI engines were examined by high frame rate flow visualization and two-component LDV measurement. It is believed that the tumble and swirl motion generated during intake breaks down into small-scale turbulence later in the cycle. The exact nature of this relationship is not well known. However, control of the turbulence offers control of the combustion process. To develop a better physical understanding of the in-cylinder flow, the effects of the cylinder head intake port configuration and the piston geometry were examined. For the present study, a 3.5L, four-valve engine was modified to be mounted on an AVL single cylinder research engine type 520. A quartz cylinder was fabricated for optical access to the in-cylinder flow. Piston rings were replaced by Rulon-LD rings. A Rulon-LD ring is advantageous for the optical access as it requires no lubrication.

Analyzing Vibrations in an IC Engine Valve Train

This study analyzes the vibration characteristics of the valve train of a 2.0L SOHC Chrysler Corp. Neon engine over a range of operating speeds to investigate and demonstrate the advantages and limitations of various dynamic measurements such as displacement, velocity, and acceleration in this application. The valve train was tested in a motoring fixture at speeds of 500 to 3500 camshaft rpm. The advantages of analyzing both time and frequency domain measurements are described. Both frequency and order analysis were done on the data. The theoretical order spectra of cam displacement and acceleration were computed and compared to the experimental data. Deconvolution was used to uncover characteristic frequencies of vibration in the system. The theoretical cam acceleration spectrum was deconvolved from measured acceleration spectra to reveal the frequency response function of the follower system.

Gasoline direct injection technology is receiving increased attention among automotive engineers due to its high potential to reach future emission and fuel economy goals. This paper reports some of the design and development techniques in use at Chrysler as applied to four-stroke Direct Injection Spark Ignition (DISI) engines. The spray characteristics of Chrysler's single-fluid high-pressure injector are reported. Tools used in the design process are identified. Observations of the in-cylinder fuel/air mixing process using laser diagnostic techniques and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are described. Finally, combustion and emissions characteristics using Design of Experiment (DoE) tests are presented.

Application of LIPA (Laser Induced Photochemical Anemometry) to the Water Analog Model of a Four-Stroke IC Engine

Our research contributes to the overall attempt to gain knowledge of the fluid dynamical processes in engines by applying a new measurement technique called LIPA (Laser Induced Photochemical Anemometry). It concentrates on detecting fundamental flow and mixing mechanisms by performing experiments on the induction stroke in an axisymmetric motored water analog model of a four stroke IC engine. We present results of the investigations done at an engine speed of 20 RPM in water (corresponding to 340 RPM in air) at three different valve lifts (3, 6, and 9 mm). Maps containing velocity vectors depict in 2D a toroidal recirculation pattern that scales with cylinder volume and they suggest that the recirculation pattern possesses the highest degree of order -- thus least mixing -- for 9 mm valve lift and the lowest for 3 mm valve lift. A fluid dynamic model on the basis of freestream jet characteristics has been proposed to account for this phenomenon.

Architecture and Operation of the HIP7010 J1850 Byte-Level Interface Circuit

As a cost effective solution to making microcontroller based systems “J1850[1] aware”, a peripheral device (the HIP7010) was developed to extend the capabilities of standard microcontrollers. From the perspective of the Host, the peripheral device handles J1850 messages as a series of bytes (similar in concept to a universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter [UART]). The architecture of the HIP7010 is discussed. The design of the J1850 interface, state machine, status/control blocks, cyclical redundancy check (CRC) hardware, host interface, and fail-safe features are detailed. Illustrations are provided of: Host/HIP7010 interfacing; message transmission and reception; error handling; and In-Frame Response (IFR) generation.

This paper outlines several methodologies which use finite element and experimental models to predict vehicle NVH responses. Trimmed body experimental modal subsystem models are incorporated into the finite element system model to evaluate engine mounting systems for low frequency vibration problems. Higher frequency noise issues related to road input are evaluated using experimentally derived acoustic transfer functions combined with finite element subsystem model responses. Specific examples of system models built to simulate idle shake and road noise are given. Applications to engine mounting, suspension design, and body structure criteria are discussed.

Assessment of Alternative Strategies for Reducing Hydrocarbon and Carbon Monoxide Emissions from Small Two-Stroke Engines

Five small two-stroke engine designs were tested at different air/fuel ratios, under steady state and transient cycles. The effects of combustion chamber design, carburetor design, lean burning, and fuel composition on performance, hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions were studied. All tested engines had been designed to run richer than stoichiometric in order to obtain satisfactory cooling and higher power. While hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions could be greatly reduced with lean burning, engine durability would be worsened. However, it was shown that the use of a catalytic converter with acceptably lean combustion was an effective method of reducing emissions. Replacing carburetion with in-cylinder fuel injection in one of the engines resulted in a significant reduction of hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions.

Axial Compressive Load Response of the 90Md Flexed Human Tibiofemoral Joint

National Accident Sampling System (NASS) data, for the years 1993-1995, suggests a high frequency of tibiofemoral joint fractures among automotive accident victims. In addition, the NASS data also suggests that these injuries may be attributable to direct axial loading via the floor pan and/or the foot controls. Hirsch and Sullivan (1965), and Kennedy and Bailey (1968) conducted quasi-static fracture experiments axially compressing human tibiofemoral joints at low rates of loading and low angles of flexion. Hirsch and Sullivan observed a mean fracture load of approximately 8 kN compared to approximately 16 kN in the Kennedy and Bailey study. The current tibiofemoral joint injury criterion used in anthropomorphic dummies is based on Hrisch and Sullivan''s data. The current study involved impact experiments on human tibiofemoral joints (aged 71.4±11.2) directed in a superior direction along the axis of the tibia with the joint flexed 90°.

This paper describes the application of the Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) method at Chrysler. Attention is focused on the development of the clutch and brake pedal and bracketry system of the PL project in the Small Car Platform. The Chrysler DFMA procedure including competitive evaluation and value engineering was utilized during the initial design phase involving product concept development from the original functional and manufacturing requirements. After the first laboratory tests, a number of key design and manufacturing concerns surfaced and led to a second cycle of DFMA analysis. The procedure permits major design functions and manufacturing and assembly process issues and criteria to be incorporated in the initial design stages.

Can the k-ε Model Withstand the Challenges Posed by Complex Industrial Flows?

The purpose of this paper is to present numerical solution for three-dimensional flow about rotating short cylinders using the computer program AIRFLO3D. The flow Reynolds number was kept at 106 for all computations. The drag forces on the cylinder were obtained for different rotational speeds. Predictions were obtained for both an isolated cylinder and a cylinder on a moving ground. The standard k-ε model was employed to model the turbulence. Computed drag coefficients agreed well with the previous experimental data up to a spin ratio (=rω/V) of 1.5.

Chrysler 3.5 Liter V-6 Engine

A new 3.5 liter, 60 degrees V6 engine has been designed specifically for Chrysler's 1993 MY line of mid-size sedans - Dodge Intrepid, Eagle Vision, Chrysler Concorde and New Yorker. This new engine features many new components for enchanced performance. The cylinder head has a single overhead cam, four valve-per - cylinder design. The intake system is a cross-flow design equipped with dual throttle bodies, and the manifold also incorporates a vacuum operated tuning valve that increases the mid-range torque of the engine. A windage tray is used on every engine to reduce drag on the rotating components within the crankcase. Dual knock sensors (one per cylinder bank) are used to take advantage of the aggressive spark advance and high compression ratio. The engine also utilizes a plastic, helical, water pump impeller that contributes to low parasitic power losses. The engine incorporates many components and features to ensure durability.

Numerous features combine to produce the highest power and torque ratings of any gasoline-fueled light truck engine currently available while also providing commensurate durability.
