A Digital Design Agent for Ground Vehicles

The design of transportation vehicles, whether passenger or commercial, typically involves a lengthy process from concept to prototype and eventual manufacture. To improve competitiveness, original equipment manufacturers are continually exploring ways to shorten the design process. The application of digital tools such as computer-aided-design and computer-aided-engineering, as well as model-based computer simulation enable team members to virtually design and evaluate ideas within realistic operating environments. Recent advances in machine learning (ML)/artificial intelligence (AI) can be integrated into this paradigm to shorten the initial design sequence through the creation of digital agents. A digital agent can intelligently explore the design space to identify promising component features which can be collectively assessed within a virtual vehicle simulation.

A Heuristic Supervisory Controller for a 48V Hybrid Electric Vehicle Considering Fuel Economy and Battery Aging

Most studies on supervisory controllers of hybrid electric vehicles consider only fuel economy in the objective function. Taking into consideration the importance of the energy storage system health and its impact on the vehicle’s functionality, cost, and warranty, recent studies have included battery degradation as the second objective function by proposing different energy management strategies and battery life estimation methods. In this paper, a rule-based supervisory controller is proposed that splits the torque demand based not only on fuel consumption, but also on the battery capacity fade using the concept of severity factor. For this aim, the severity factor is calculated at each time step of a driving cycle using a look-up table with three different inputs including c-rate, working temperature, and state of charge of the battery. The capacity loss of the battery is then calculated using a semi-empirical capacity fade model.

Shorter development times in the automotive industry are leading to the increased use of computer simulation in the vehicle design cycle to pre-optimize vehicle concepts. The focus of the work presented in this study is vehicle dynamic performance in different driving maneuvers. More specifically this paper presents a methodology for simulation-based parameter design of vehicles for excellent performance in multiple maneuvers. The model used in the study consists of eight degrees-of-freedom and has been validated previously. The vehicle data used is for a commercially available vehicle. A number of different driving scenarios (maneuvers) based on ISO standards for transient dynamic behavior are implemented and performance indices are calculated for each individual maneuver considered. Vehicle performance is assessed based on the performance indices.

A Multi-Objective Power Component Optimal Sizing Model for Battery Electric Vehicles

With recent advances in electric vehicles, there is a plethora of powertrain topologies and components available in the market. Thus, the performance of electric vehicles is highly sensitive to the choice of various powertrain components. This paper presents a multi-objective optimization model that can optimally select component sizes for batteries, supercapacitors, and motors in regular passenger battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). The BEV topology presented here is a hybrid BEV which consists of both a battery pack and a supercapacitor bank. Focus is placed on optimal selection of the battery pack, motor, and supercapacitor combination, from a set of commercially available options, that minimizes the capital cost of the selected power components, the fuel cost over the vehicle lifespan, and the 0-60 mph acceleration time. Available batteries, supercapacitors, and motors are from a market survey.

A Nonlinear Model Predictive Control Strategy with a Disturbance Observer for Spark Ignition Engines with External EGR

This research proposes a control system for Spark Ignition (SI) engines with external Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) based on model predictive control and a disturbance observer. The proposed Economic Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller (E-NMPC) tries to minimize fuel consumption for a number of engine cycles into the future given an Indicated Mean Effective Pressure (IMEP) tracking reference and abnormal combustion constraints like knock and combustion variability. A nonlinear optimization problem is formulated and solved in real time using Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) to obtain the desired control actuator set-points. An Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) based observer is applied to estimate engine states, combining both air path and cylinder dynamics. The EKF engine state(s) observer is augmented with disturbance estimation to account for modeling errors and/or sensor/actuator offset.

A Preliminary Method of Delivering Engineering Design Heuristics

This paper argues the importance of engineering heuristics and introduces an educational data-driven tool to help novice engineers develop their engineering heuristics more effectively. The main objective in engineering practice is to identify opportunities for improvement and apply methods to effect change. Engineers do so by applying ‘how to’ knowledge to make decisions and take actions. This ‘how to’ knowledge is encoded in engineering heuristics. In this paper, we describe a tool that aims to provide heuristic knowledge to users by giving them insight into heuristics applied by experts in similar situations. A repository of automotive data is transformed into a tool with powerful search and data visualization functionalities. The tool can be used to educate novice automotive engineers alongside the current resource intensive practices of teaching engineering heuristics through social methods such as an apprenticeship.

A Prognostic Based Control Framework for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Electrified transportation has received significant interest recently because of sustainable and clean energy goals. However, the degradation of electrical components such as energy storage systems raises system reliability and economic concerns. In this paper, a prognostic-based control strategy is proposed for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) to abate the degradation of energy systems. Degradation forecasting models of electrical components are developed to predict their degradation paths. The predicted results are then used to control HEVs in order to reduce the degradation of components.

A Virtual Driving Education Simulation System - Hardware and Software with Pilot Study

Novice drivers are often ill-equipped to safely operate a motor vehicle due to their limited repertoire of skills and experiences. However, automotive simulation tools can be applied to better educate young drivers for a number of common driving scenarios. In this paper, the Clemson Automotive Training System (CATS) will be presented to educate and train novice drivers to safely operate four wheel passenger vehicles on paved roadways. A portable automotive simulator can be programmed to emulate a variety of high-crash rate scenarios and roadway geometries. Drivers receive instructions regarding proper driving techniques and behaviors with an opportunity to practice the given vehicle maneuver. An on-line evaluation methodology has been designed to analyze the drivers' capabilities at handling these roadway events. First, a pre-simulation questionnaire evaluates their basic understanding of everyday driving situations.

An Immersive Vehicle-in-the-Loop VR Platform for Evaluating Human-to-Autonomous Vehicle Interactions

The deployment of autonomous vehicles in real-world scenarios requires thorough testing to ensure sufficient safety levels. Driving simulators have proven to be useful testbeds for assisted and autonomous driving functionalities but may fail to capture all the nuances of real-world conditions. In this paper, we present a snapshot of the design and evaluation using a Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control application of virtual reality platform currently in development at our institution. The platform is designed so to: allow for incorporating live real-world driving data into the simulation, enabling Vehicle-in-the-Loop testing of autonomous driving behaviors and providing us with a useful mean to evaluate the human factor in the autonomous vehicle context.

An Innovative Electric Motor Cooling System for Hybrid Vehicles - Model and Test

Enhanced electric motor performance in transportation vehicles can improve system reliability and durability over rigorous operating cycles. The design of innovative heat rejection strategies in electric motors can minimize cooling power consumption and associated noise generation while offering configuration flexibility. This study investigates an innovative electric motor cooling strategy through bench top thermal testing on an emulated electric motor. The system design includes passive (e.g., heat pipes) cooling as the primary heat rejection pathway with supplemental conventional cooling using a variable speed coolant pump and radiator fan(s). The integrated thermal structure, “cradle”, transfers heat from the motor shell towards an end plate for heat dissipation to the ambient surroundings or transmission to an external thermal bus to remote heat exchanger.

An Integrated Cooling System for Hybrid Electric Vehicle Motors: Design and Simulation

Hybrid electric vehicles offer the advantages of reduced emissions and greater travel range in comparison to conventional and electric ground vehicles. Regardless of propulsion strategy, efficient cooling of electric motors remains an open challenge due to the operating cycles and ambient conditions. The onboard thermal management system must remove the generated heat so that the motors and other vehicle components operate within their designed temperature ranges. In this article, an integrated thermal structure, or cradle, is designed to efficiently transfer heat within the motor housing to the end plates for transmission to an external heat exchanger. A radial array of heat pipes function as an efficient thermal connector between the motor and heat connector, or thermal bus, depending on the configuration. Cooling performance has been evaluated for various driving cycles.

An Integrated Energy Management and Control Framework for Hybrid Military Vehicles based on Situational Awareness and Dynamic Reconfiguration

As powertrain hybridization technologies are becoming popular, their application for heavy-duty military vehicles is drawing attention. An intelligent design and operation of the energy management system (EMS) is important to ensure that hybrid military vehicles can operate efficiently, simultaneously maximize fuel economy and minimize monetary cost, while successfully completing mission tasks. Furthermore, an integrated EMS framework is vital to ensure a functional vehicle power system (VPS) to survive through critical missions in a highly stochastic environment, when needed. This calls for situational awareness and dynamic system reconfiguration capabilities on-board of the military vehicle. This paper presents a new energy management and control (EMC) framework based on holistic situational awareness (SA) and dynamic reconfiguration of the VPS.

An Online Degradation Forecasting and Abatement Framework for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

The increasing electrification of vehicles raises system reliability concerns as the electrical and electronic components deteriorate faster after an event. In addition, the traditional method of scheduled maintenance is not efficient for managing a fleet of vehicles; because, the degradation processes are distinct in different vehicles. Therefore, integrating an online degradation forecasting and abatement module into a vehicle that is able to assess the vehicle status and predict the degradation process to take timely appropriate actions to reach satisfactory reliability and long-term goals, is valuable. Quantifying uncertainty is one of the main challenges of degradation forecasting; because, the degradation process of a vehicular system is distinct. This paper proposes an online degradation forecasting framework to predict the degradation processes to reallocate energy sources in the system, obtaining long-term goals while adhering to the reliability requirements.

Assessment of a Safe Driving Program for Novice Operators

A safe driver program has been established through a public-private partnership. This program targets novice drivers and uses a combination of classroom and in-vehicle training exercises to address critical driver errors known to lead to crashes. Students participate in four modules: braking to learn proper stopping technique, obstacle avoidance / reaction time to facilitate proper lane selection and collision avoidance, tailgating to learn about following distances, and loss of control to react appropriately when a vehicle is about to become laterally unstable. Knowledge pre and posttests are also administered at the start and end of the program. Students' in-vehicle driving performance are evaluated by instructors as well as recorded by onboard data acquisition units. The data has been evaluated with objective and subjective grading rubrics. The 70 participants in three classes used as a case study achieved an average skill score of 83.93/100.

Automatic Formal Verification of SysML State Machine Diagrams for Vehicular Control Systems

Vehicular control systems are characterized with numerous complex interactions with a steady rise of autonomous functions, which makes it more challenging for designers and safety engineers to identify unexpected failures. These systems tend to be highly integrated and exhibit features like concurrency for which traditional verification and validation techniques (i.e. testing and simulation) are insufficient to provide rigorous and complete assessment. Model Checking, a well-known formal verification technique, can be used to rigorously prove the correctness of such systems according to design Requirements. In particular, Model Checking is a method for formally verifying finite-state concurrent systems. Specifications about the system are expressed as temporal logic formulas, and efficient symbolic algorithms are used to traverse the model defined by the system and check if the specification holds or not.

Automotive Driving Simulators: Research, Education, and Entertainment

Automotive simulators offer an immersive environment to operate vehicle systems in a safe and repeatable manner. A fundamental question exists regarding their effectiveness for an identified task. For instance, driving simulators can play a significant role in evaluating vehicle designs, developing safety regulations, supporting human factors engineering research, administering driver training and education, and offering individual entertainment. Some of the driving simulator technology users include automotive manufacturers and suppliers, research laboratories at universities and government agencies, driver education and training programs, and motorsports and racing entertainment venues. In each case, the simulator capabilities and functionality must encompass the expectations of the driver to permit their perception of realistic scenarios for evaluation. This paper investigates three driving simulators in terms of their hardware and software, as well as their applications.

Bonding Strength Modeling of Polyurethane to Vulcanized Rubber

Tires manufactured from polyurethane (PU) have been espoused recently for reduced hysteretic loss, but the material provides poor traction or poor wear resistance in the application, requiring inclusion of a traditional vulcanized rubber tread at the contact surface. The tread can be attached by adhesive methods after the PU body is cured, or the PU can be directly cured to reception sites on the rubber chain molecules unoccupied by crosslinked (vulcanizing) sulfur atoms. This paper provides a study of the two bonding options, both as-manufactured and after dynamic loading representative of tire performance in service. Models of each process are introduced, and an experimental comparison of the bonding strength between each method is made. Results are applied to tire fatigue simulation.

Collaborative robots are more and more used in smart manufacturing because of their capability to work beside and collaborate with human workers. With the deployment of these robots, manufacturing tasks are more inclined to be accomplished by multiple humans and multiple robots (MH-MR) through teaming effort. In such MH-MR collaboration scenarios, the task distribution among the multiple humans and multiple robots is very critical to efficiency. It is also more challenging due to the heterogeneity of different agents. Existing approaches in task distribution among multiple agents mostly consider humans with assumed or known capabilities. However human capabilities are always changing due to various factors, which may lead to suboptimal efficiency. Although some researches have studied several human factors in manufacturing and applied them to adjust the robot task and behaviors.

Computational Method to Examine Spoke Dynamics in a High Speed Rolling Wheel

This paper describes a computational approach to investigating spoke vibrations in cast polyurethane spoked wheels during high-speed rolling. It focuses on four aspects: 1) Creating a two-dimensional finite element model of a cast polyurethane rolling wheel which is in contact with a rigid plane to observe the spoke vibrations. 2) Investigating the effect of rolling speed on the observed spoke vibrations. 3) Investigating the effect of spoke thickness on spoke vibration frequencies. 4) Creating a three-dimensional spoke model to investigate spoke vibrations which exhibit both symmetric and anti-symmetric out-of-plane modes.

Conceptualization and Implementation of a Scalable Powertrain, Modular Energy Storage and an Alternative Cooling System on a Student Concept Vehicle

The Deep Orange program immerses automotive engineering students into the world of an OEM as part of their 2-year graduate education. In support of developing the program’s seventh vehicle concept, the students studied the sponsoring brand essence, conducted market research, and made a heuristic assessment of competitor vehicles. The upfront research lead to the definition of target customers and setting vehicle level targets that were broken down into requirements to develop various vehicle sub-systems. The powertrain team was challenged to develop a scalable propulsion concept enabled by a common vehicle architecture that allowed future customers to select (at the point of purchase) among various levels of electrification best suiting their needs and personal desires. Four different configurations were identified and developed: all-electric, two plug-in hybrid electric configurations, and an internal combustion engine only.
