2D Mapping and Quantification of the In-Cylinder Air/Fuel-Ratio in a GDI Engine by Means of LIF and Comparison to Simultaneous Results from 1D Raman Measurements

The optimization of the vaporization and mixture formation process is of great importance for the development of modern gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines, because it influences the subsequent processes of the ignition, combustion and pollutant formation significantly. In consequence, the subject of this work was the development of a measurement technique based on the laser induced exciplex fluorescence (LIF), which allows the two dimensional visualization and quantification of the in-cylinder air/fuel ratio. A tracer concept consisting of benzene and triethylamine dissolved in a non-fluorescent base fuel has been used. The calibration of the equivalence ratio proportional LIF-signal was performed directly inside the engine, at a well known mixture composition, immediately before the direct injection measurements were started.

A New Method for the Investigation of Unburned Oil Emissions in the Raw Exhaust of SI Engines

The study of oil emission is of essential interest for the engine development of modern cars, as well as for the understanding of hydrocarbon emissions especially during cold start conditions. A laser mass spectrometer has been used to measure single aromatic hydrocarbons in unconditioned exhaust gas of a H2-fueled engine at stationary and transient motor operation. These compounds represent unburned oil constituents. The measurements were accompanied by FID and GC-FID measurements of hydrocarbons which represent the burned oil constituents. The total oil consumption has been determined by measuring the oil sampled by freezing and weighing. It has been concluded that only 10 % of the oil consumption via exhaust gas has burned in the cylinders. A correlation of the emission of single oil-based components at ppb level detected with the laser mass spectrometer to the total motor oil emission has been found.

Active Boom Noise Damping of Dodge Durango

Two active boom noise damping techniques using a Helmholtz resonator-based compensator and a lead compensator called a positive pressure feedback have been developed at the University of Dayton [1]. The two damping techniques are of feedback type and their compensators can be implemented in software or hardware (using inexpensive operational amplifiers). The active damping system would rely on a speaker, a low-cost microphone, two accelerometers, and an electronic circuit (or a micro-controller) to add damping to the offending low-frequency vibroacoustic modes of the cavity. The simplicity of the active boom noise damping system lends itself to be incorporated into a vehicle's sound system. The Helmholtz resonator-based strategy is implemented on a Dodge Durango sport utility vehicle. The control scheme adds appreciable amount of damping to the first cavity mode and the first structurally induced acoustic mode of the cabin.

Application of a New Method for On-Line Oil Consumption Measurement

Fast and exact measurement of engine oil consumption is a very difficult task. Our aim is to achieve this measurement at a common test bed without engine modifications. We resolved this problem with a new technique using Laser Mass Spectrometry to detect appropriate tracers in the raw engine exhaust. The tracers are added to the engine oil. to the engine oil. For detection of these tracers we use a Laser Mass Spectrometer (LAMS). This is a combination of resonant laser ionization (with an all-solid-state laser) and Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry. Currently this is the only way to detect oil originated molecules (like our tracers) in the raw exhaust very fast (50 Hz) and sensitive (ppb-region). Thus, engine mapping of oil consumption over load and speed can be performed in 1-2 days with about 90 measurements. Even measurement during dynamic engine operation is possible, but not quantitative (due to the lack of information about dynamic exhaust gas mass flow).

Assessing Low Frequency Flow Noise Based on an Experimentally Validated Modal Substructuring Strategy Featuring Non-Conforming Grids

The continuous encouragement of lightweight design in modern vehicles demands a reliable and efficient method to predict and ameliorate the interior acoustic comfort for passengers. Due to considerable psychological effects on stress and concentration, the low frequency contribution plays a vital rule regarding interior noise perception. Apart other contributors, low frequency noise can be induced by transient aerodynamic excitation and the related structural vibrations. Assessing this disturbance requires the reliable simulation of the complex multi-physical mechanisms involved, such as transient aerodynamics, structural dynamics and acoustics. The domain of structural dynamics is particularly sensitive regarding the modelling of attachments restraining the vibrational behaviour of incorporated membrane-like structures. In a later development stage, when prototypes are available, it is therefore desirable to replace or update purely numerical models with experimental data.

Challenges in Vibroacoustic Vehicle Body Simulation Including Uncertainties

During the last decades, big steps have been taken towards a realistic simulation of NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness) behavior of vehicles using the Finite Element (FE) method. The quality of these computation models has been substantially increased and the accessible frequency range has been widened. Nevertheless, to perform a reliable prediction of the vehicle vibroacoustic behavior, the consideration of uncertainties is crucial. With this approach there are many challenges on the way to valid and useful simulation models and they can be divided into three areas: the input uncertainties, the propagation of uncertainties through the FE model and finally the statistical output quantities. Each of them must be investigated to choose sufficient methods for a valid and fast prediction of vehicle body vibroacoustics. It can be shown by rough estimation that dimensionality of the corresponding random space for different types of uncertainty is tremendously high.

Determination of the noise contributions of engine surfaces

One of the key elements in efforts to minimize the noise emmissionis of engines and other machinery is the knowledge of the main noise radiating surfaces and the relation between measurable surface vibration and the sound pressure. Under the name of Airborne Source Quantification (ASQ), various techniques have been developed to discretize and quantify the source strength, and noise contributions, of vibrating surface patches of machinery or vehicle components. The noise contributions of patches to the sound pressure at specific locations in the sound field or to the total radiated sound power are identified. The source strength of equivalent point sources, the acoustic transfer from the source surface to critical sound field locations and finally the sound pressure contributions of the individual patches are quantified. These techniques are not unique to engine application, but very relevant for engine development. An example is shown for an engine under artificial excitation.

The products of most industries can benefit from improved acoustic design. On the other hand, sound emission regulation has become more and more rigorous and customers expect quieter products. Digital Aeroacoustics Design Method of Climate Systems for Improved Cabin Comfort

Over the past decades, interior noise from wind noise or engine noise have been significantly reduced by leveraging improvements of both the overall vehicle design and of sound package. Consequently, noise sources originating from HVAC systems (Heat Ventilation and Air Conditioning), fans or exhaust systems are becoming more relevant for perceived quality and passenger comfort. This study focuses on HVAC systems and discusses a Flow-Induced Noise Detection Contributions (FIND Contributions) numerical method enabling the identification of the flow-induced noise sources inside and around HVAC systems. This methodology is based on the post-processing of unsteady flow results obtained using Lattice Boltzmann based Method (LBM) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations combined with LBM-simulated Acoustic Transfer Functions (ATF) between the position of the sources inside the system and the passenger’s ears.

Digital Filtering for J211 Requirements using a Fast Fourier Transform Based Filter

The need for low pass filters stems from a need to eliminate high frequency noise from raw data (the output of the data acquisition system). As an example, consider the frame of a vehicle used in a crash test. The frame will exhibit high frequency vibrations, which do not affect the vehicles movement in space. The use of filters has since been expanded to include such things as the calculation of potential injury. Phaseless filters are now required for all FMVSS-208 injury calculations (see references). A single filter formula can not allow all test facilities to comply with the J211 CFC corridors. Even the SAE J211 recommended Butterworth filter may not comply with the J211 requirements. A new, universal, filtering system is required to harmonize the data processing at all testing facilities. The use of Fourier series for filtering provides a very powerful, yet overlooked, solution to today's filtering problems.

This paper investigates the noise environment due to DC motors found in automobiles and the requirements that automobile manufacturers impose to suppress RF electromagnetic noise and conducted transients.

Empirical Noise Model for Power Train Noise in a Passenger Vehicle

Power train noise reaches the interior through structureborne paths and through airborne transmission of engine casing noise. To determine transfer functions from vibration to interior noise a shaker was attached at the engine attachment points, with the engine removed. A simple engine noise simulator, with loudspeaker cones on its faces, was placed in the engine compartment to measure airborne transfer functions to interior noise. Empirical noise estimates, based on the incoherent sum of contributions for individual source terms times the appropriate transfer function, compared remarkably well with measured levels obtained from dynomometer tests. Airborne transmission dominates above 1.5kHz. At lower frequencies engine casing radiation and vibration contributions are comparable.

Energy Consumption of Electro-Hydraulic Steering Systems

The reduction of fuel consumption in vehicles remains an important target in vehicle development to meet the carbon dioxide emission reduction target. One of the significant consumers of energy in a vehicle is the hydraulic power-assisted steering system (HPS) powered by the engine belt drive. To reduce the energy consumption an electric motor can be used to drive the pump (electro-hydraulic power steering or EHPS). In this work a simulation model was developed and validated to model the energy consumption of the whole steering system. This includes an advanced friction model for the steering rack, a physically modeled steering valve, the hydraulic pump and the electric motor with the control unit. The model is used to investigate the influence of various parameters on the energy consumption for different road situations. The results identified the important parameters influencing the power consumption and showed the potential to reduce the power consumption of the system.

Engine Internal Dynamic Force Identification and the Combination with Engine Structural and Vibro-Acoustic Transfer Information

The vibration-generating mechanisms inside an engine are highly non-linear (combustion, valve operation, hydraulic bearing behavior, etc.). However, the engine structure, under the influence of these vibration-generating mechanisms, responds in a highly linear way. For the development and optimization of the engine structure for noise and vibration it is beneficial to use fast and ‘simple’ linear models, like linear FE-models, measured modal models or measured FRF-models. All these models allow a qualitative assessment of variants without excitation information. But, for true optimization, internal excitation spectra are needed in order to avoid that effort is spent to optimize non-critical system properties. Unfortunately, these internal excitation spectra are difficult to measure. Direct measurement of combustion pressure is still feasible, but crank-bearing forces, piston guidance forces etc. can only be identified indirectly.

Errors in the Driveline System Balancing Process

Single-plane balancing is a very well-understood process, whereby an imbalance vector is determined and then opposed by a similar vector of equal magnitude but 180° out of phase. This is used in many situations to improve machine performance, vibration, noise etc. However, there is inherent in this process a sensitivity to errors of measurement and correction, since a large imbalance vector and the equally large correction vector must be of exactly equal magnitude and exactly 180° apart for perfect balance. This paper examines the effect of errors in measurement of the initial imbalance and correction of it on the residual balance of automotive drivelines. In particular, it examines the effects of the errors present in a system whereby a system balance correction is made, on a driveline assembly, at discrete points around a given plane (at bolt locations). Errors occur in measurement of vibration, in calculating correction masses and in applying those correction masses.

A short look back on events so far is followed by a description of the protocol and its first implementation as an integrated circuit, as well as its incorporation into a complete tool environment.

Modeling and Validation of Large Hydraulic Hose Deflections

A modeling methodology is being developed to aid in routing and predicting movement of brake hoses with the objective of having an adequate representation in a Computer Aided Design (CAD) system for virtual prototyping. Once mount points and orientations have been specified,material properties and length determine the path of the hose. Data, collected on a straight and deflected hose at several points along the length of the hose, were compared to an ADAMS simulation. Problems that were encountered in metrology and data transfer are discussed along with their potential impact on the modeling accuracy.

Modeling of Engine Exhaust Acoustics

Exhaust acoustics simulation is an important part of the exhaust system process. Especially important is the trend towards a coupled approach to performance and acoustics design. The present paper describes a new simulation tool developed for such coupled simulations. This tool is based on a one-dimensional fluid dynamics solution of the flow in the engine manifolds and exhaust and intake elements. To represent the often complex geometries of mufflers, an easy-to-use graphical pre-processor is provided, with which the user builds a model representation of mufflers using a library of basic elements. A comparison made to two engines equipped with exhaust silencers, shows that the predictions give good results.

New Acoustic Test Facilities of BMW

BMW has introduced new test stands for noise measurements on passenger cars and motorcycles. Information is given on room conditions, machinery equipment, sound levels, frequency ranges and types of measurement. The semi-anechoic room is designed for measuring the sound distribution emitted by a single vehicle. Road influence is simulated by a reflecting floor and a roller-dynamometer. The free field sound distribution in terms of distance and direction is measured in the anechoic room. This room has high-precision installations for sound source identification and noise mapping. The reverberation room serves to measure sound power emitted by the test object. Its second purpose is to subject the bodywork to a high-power external sound source and to measure the sound-deadening effect of the passenger compartment. In conclusion, the presentation provides reports on the initial experience with these test facilities.

New Driving Stability Control System with Reduced Technical Effort for Compact and Medium Class Passenger Cars

Wheel slip control system have found a remarkable penetration in all car segments. The information on the wheel behavior has lead to further developments which control the brake performance as well as the driving of the car in general. Latest systems introduced especially on luxury cars use wheel individual brake intervention to ensure vehicle stability under various driving maneuvers within the physical limits. Such systems use vehicle dynamic sensors and special hydraulics which serve as energy source for the automatic brake application. The technical effort of such systems like the Dynamic Stability Control DSC has limited the installation to upper class cars so far. New approaches are required to allow for a more wide spread penetration. Optimized hydraulics together with a rational design of the electronics seems to offer a basis for a more cost effective design.
