A Brief History of Auto Radio Styling

“There's nothing new under the sun,” the old proverb says. But you only have to read a magazine, scan a periodical, listen to the radio, watch television, or glance at the multitude of ads that promise that such and such product is the latest trend or has up-to-date, state-of-the-art technology, to seemingly prove the old proverb wrong. However, old proverbs become old because they withstand the test of time. In this case, a hasty judgement should be withheld. Currently, as in the past, the above holds true for car radios as well. Whether in the United States, Europe, Canada or Latin America, the public has always been susceptible to last minute technological advances. It is curious then, that as far as car radio styling is concerned, their appearance has been typically rather conservative, and that it is only recently that styling has begun to change to be more in tune with the times.

A Cycle Counting Algorithm for Fatigue Damage Analysis

A cycle counting algorithm that will reduce a complex history into a series of discrete cycles is presented. The cycles determined by this technique are defined as closed stress-strain hysteresis loops of the type obtained from constant amplitude tests. Using the computer cycle counting algorithm, life predictions were made and compared with experimental results. These predictions were found to be typically within a ±3 factor of error. Also, the computer counting method was found to yield more accurate life predictions when compared to the histogram and range counting methods.

A Review of the Dual EGO Sensor Method for OBD-II Catalyst Efficiency Monitoring

This paper provides an overview of the dual EGO sensor method for OBD-II catalyst efficiency monitoring. The processes governing the relationship between catalyst oxygen storage, HC conversion efficiency, and rear EGO sensor response are reviewed in detail. A simple physical model relating catalyst oxygen storage capacity and rear EGO sensor response is constructed and used in conjunction with experimental data to provide additional insight into the operation of the catalyst monitor. The effect that the catalyst washcoat formulation has in determining the relationship between catalyst oxygen storage capacity and HC conversion efficiency and its impact on the catalyst monitor is also investigated. Lastly, the effects of catalyst failure mode, fuel sulfur, and the fuel additive MMT on the catalyst monitor's ability to properly diagnose catalyst function are discussed.

A Rule Based Design Process and an Evolutionary Architecture for the Vehicle Power Supply

This paper begins with a comparison of the automotive power supply and loads in the early 1950's (near the end of the six-volt era) to the modern counterpart in the early 1990's (possibly near the end of the 12-volt era). A typical power supply specification sheet is developed based on the in-vehicle performance characteristics. From this summary, two attributes are noted: first, the system voltage is not very stable and second, transient protection is limited. With this awareness and the knowledge that the power supply of the future will need architectural change, a review of the design assumptions using a total system view and a long term outlook is advanced. Using a rule based design process and employing available technology to enhance the power system architecture, a number of elements are proposed for consideration in new designs.

A Simplified Approach to Quantifying Gear Rattle Noise Using Envelope Analysis

The present work discusses an objective test and analysis method developed to quickly quantify steering gear rattle noise heard in a vehicle. Utilizing envelope analysis on the time history data of the rattle signal, the resulting method is simple, fast, practical and yields a single-valued metric which correlates well to subjective measures of rattle noise. In contrast to many other rattle analysis methods, the approach discussed here is completed in the time domain. As applied to rattle noise produced by automotive electric steering systems, the metric produced with this analysis method correlates well with subjective appraisals of vehicle-level rattle noise performance. Lastly, this method can also be extended to rattle measurements at the component and subcomponent level.

Accurate Modeling for the Powertrain and Subframe Modes

Powertrain mounts are one of the important design characteristics of a vehicle. Powertrain is mostly mounted to the front subframe and once installed in a vehicle, powertrain mounting has an important role in determining the vehicle vibration characteristics. A good mounting system isolates engine input vibration from the vehicle body and minimizes the effect of road inputs to the customer. This paper discusses results of several dynamic models as they relate to noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) and compares the accuracy of these models. Various powertrain models are studied and their accuracy in comparison with full a vehicle model is discussed.

Aluminum Rail Rivet and Steel Rail Weld DOE and CAE Studies for NVH

Vehicle body with aluminum riveted construction instead of steel welded one will be a big challenge to NVH. In this paper, aluminum and steel rails with the dimensions similar to the rear rail portion of a typical mid-size sedan were fabricated. Rivets were used to assemble the aluminum rails while welds were used to assemble the steel rails. Adhesive, rivet/weld spacing, and rivet/weld location were the three major factors to be studied and their impact on NVH were investigated. The DOE matrix was developed using these three major factors. Modal tests were performed on those rails according to the DOE matrix. The FEA models corresponding to the hardware were built. CAE modal analysis were performed and compared with test data. The current in-house CAE modeling techniques for spot weld and adhesive were evaluated and validated with test data.

Analytical and Experimental Techniques in Solving the Plastic Intake Manifold NVH

The intent of this paper is to summarize the work of the V8 power plant intake manifold radiated noise study. In a particular V8 engine application, customer satisfaction feedback provided observations of existing unpleasant noise at the driver's ear. A comprehensive analysis of customer data indicated that a range from 500 to 800 Hz suggests a potential improvement in noise reduction at the driver's ear. In this study the noise source was determined using various accelerometers located throughout the valley of the engine and intake manifold. The overall surface velocity of the engine valley was ranked with respect to the overall surface velocity of the intake manifold. An intensity mapping technique was also used to determine the major component noise contribution. In order to validate the experimental findings, a series of analysis was also conducted. The analysis model included not only the plastic intake manifold, but also the whole powertrain.

Biaxial Torsion-Bending Fatigue of SAE Axle Shafts

Variable amplitude torsion, bending, and combined torsion and bending fatigue tests were performed on an axle shaft. The moment inputs used were taken from the respective history channels of a cable log skidder vehicle axle. Testing results indicated that combined variable amplitude loading lives were shorter than the lives of specimens subjected to bending or torsion alone. Calculations using strain rosette readings indicated that principle strains were most active around specific angles but also occurred with lesser magnitudes through a wider angular range. Over the course of a biaxial test, cyclic creep narrowly limited the angles and magnitudes of the principal strains. This limitation was not observed in the calculated principal stress behavior. Simple life predictions made on the measured strain gage histories were non-conservative in most cases.

Biomechanical Design Considerations for Side Impact

Side impact collisions account for about 29% of all vehicle occupant fatalities and for about one-fifth of all the “harm” to vehicle occupants. This paper addresses many aspects of side impact induced injuries which vehicle planners and designers may choose to consider during the evolution of a vehicle design. The proposed NHTSA side impact test, side impact dummies, the biomechanics of different human body areas and general concepts for increased occupant protection are discussed from a theoretical point of view. It is believed that this paper or a future update of it, can only become a useful tool when there is general agreement that it reflects solid biomechanical direction which in turn, can be reflected in actual, practicable, responsible hardware design.

Blower Motor Whining Noise - A Case Study

Vehicle interior sound quality is regarded as a major quality attribute by automobile consumers and manufacturers. Whining noise, due to its steady state and tonal nature, is easily perceived as an annoyance to normal driving comfort. The blower motor in the climate control air-handling system can be a source of whining noise, especially when the motor is located in the passenger compartment. This paper describes a systematic case study carried out to identify the major noise generating mechanisms of a whining noise from the climate control air-handling system. The paper discusses the use of commonly available tools and techniques to resolve typical automotive NVH concerns resulting in improved sound quality. Particular measurement and analysis techniques presented include sound field mapping using acoustic intensity, resonance identification using transfer functions, three-axis spectrum analysis, and some physical modifications to the source and propagation paths.

Characterization of Vehicle Deceleration Time Histories in the Analysis of Impact Dynamics

It is frequently desirable to construct a characterization of vehicle deceleration which is significantly simplified from its actual time history. A number of interesting techniques have been developed to perform this characterization based upon polynomial and Fourier-type series approximations and utilizing goodness of fit criteria related to both least squared error and the satisfaction of boundary conditions. Extensive mathematical occupant simulations indicate that characterizations involving as few as four parameters are adequate to describe the primary effects of complex vehicle deceleration time histories as they influence occupant dynamics with conventional restraint systems.

Clustering and Scaling of Naturalistic Forward Collision Warning Events Based on Expert Judgments

The objectives of this study were a) to determine how expert judges categorized valid Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety Systems (IVBSS) Forward Collision Warning (FCW) events from review of naturalistic driving data; and b) to determine how consistent these categorizations were across the judges working in pairs. FCW event data were gathered from 108 drivers who drove instrumented vehicles for 6 weeks each. The data included video of the driver and road scene ahead, beside, and behind the vehicle; audio of the FCW alert onset; and engineering data such as speed and braking applications. Six automotive safety experts examined 197 ‘valid’ (i.e., conditions met design intent) FCW events and categorized each according to a taxonomy of primary contributing factors. Results indicated that of these valid FCW events, between 55% and 73% could be considered ‘nuisance alerts’ by the driver.

Combustion Uniformity as a Measure for Engine Idle NVH

Low levels of Engine Idle Shake are required to produce a vehicle that delivers to the customer the overall perception of quality. Some previous metrics used to measure idle shake, e.g. SDIMEP, LNV, etc. have not always been good discriminators of engines that produced low levels of idle shake and those that did not. This paper will propose a new metric, Combustion Uniformity, that does a better job of describing the phenomena that creates idle shake. This new metric will then be used to describe how different distributions of cylinder-to-cylinder variation create different levels of Combustion Uniformity and how those levels of Combustion Uniformity compare to previous metrics.

Constant Q Transform for Automotive NVH Signal Analysis

The constant Q transform consists of a geometrically spaced filter bank, which is close to the wavelet transform due to the feature of its increasing time resolution for high frequencies. On the other hand, it can be processed using the well-known FFT algorithm. In this sense, this tool is a middle term between Fourier and wavelet analyses, which can be used for stationary and non-stationary signals. Automotive NVH signals can be stationary (e.g., idle, cruise) or non-stationary, i.e., time-varying signals (e.g., door closing/opening, run-up, rundown). The objective of this work is to propose the use of the constant Q transform, developed originally for musical signal processing, for automotive NVH (run up, impact strip and door closing) time-frequency analyses. Also, similarities and differences of the proposed tool when compared with Fourier and wavelet analyses are addressed.

Contribution of sound package components to airborne attenuation

In South America and other emerging markets sound package development is limited by the cost and weight of its components. Reaching the right balance between cost and a good NVH performance provides an important competitive advantage, therefore any achieved design opportunities can be replicated to other vehicle lines and markets. In this work the main noise transmission paths are verified by evaluating the contribution of sound package components to noise attenuation in two cases, initially from the tire contact patch through vehicle body to a number of positions within the vehicle interior and, next, from the engine compartment, by placing a High Frequency Sound Source (HFSS) at engine faces to the same vehicle interior positions. The main objective is to optimize sound package distribution and to prioritize which areas should have the sound package reinforced in order to improve Tire and Engine noise reduction.

Controlling Panel Noise and Vibration Using Non-Contacting Test Methodologies

Non-contacting test methodology studies of automotive body components have become a very useful, high resolution and sensitive test technique to engineering personnel. Continuous wave laser holometry, computer aided holometry (CAH), pulsed laser holometry and a scanning laser system were used to image vibration patterns. These methods were selected because of improved data turn-around time in the test development process while having no mass-loading effects on the sheet metal panels. An analysis of the vehicle body structure was conducted to improve the interior body structure sound quality and to reduce road noise presence. An interrogation of the interior noise spectrum identified critical frequencies affecting vehicle NVH. This paper addresses the results of using the aforementioned non-contacting test methods to reduce panel responses by developing an optimum rib section and pattern, and the addition of adhered stiffening materials.

Correlation of Dominant Noise Transfer Paths in Statistical Energy Analysis Vehicle Model from Test as Basis for Variant Vehicle Development

For purposes of reducing development time, cost and risk, the majority of new vehicles are derived strongly or at least generally from a surrogate vehicle, often of the same general size or body style. Previous test data and lessons learned can be applied as a starting point for design of the new vehicle, especially at early phases of the design before definite design decisions have been finalized and before prototype of production test hardware is available. This is true as well of vehicle NVH development where most new vehicles being developed are variants of existing vehicles for which the main noise transfer paths from sources of interest are already understood via test results and existing targets. The NVH targets for new vehicles are defined via benchmarking, market considerations, and other higher-level decisions. The objective is then to bridge the gap between test data from surrogate vehicles to direct support of the NVH development of new vehicle programs.
