A New Predictive Vehicle Particulate Emissions Index Based on Gasoline Simulated Distillation

Fuel chemistry plays a crucial role in the continued reduction of particulate emissions (PE) and cleaner air quality from vehicles and equipment powered by internal combustion engines (ICE). Over the past ten years, there have been great improvements in predictive particulate emissions indices (correlative mathematical models) based on the fuel’s composition. Examples of these particulate indices (PI) are the Honda Particulate Matter Index (PMI) and the General Motors Particulate Evaluation Index (PEI). However, the analytical chemistry lab methods used to generate data for these two PI indices are very time-consuming. Because gasoline can be mixtures of hundreds of hydrocarbon compounds, these lab methods typically include the use of the high resolution chromatographic separation techniques such as detailed hydrocarbon analysis (DHA), with 100m chromatography columns and long (3 - 4 hours) analysis times per sample.

An Investigative Study of Sudden Pressure Increase Phenomenon Across the SCR on Filter Catalyst

In the previous research1), the authors discovered that the sudden pressure increase phenomenon in diesel particulate filter (DPF) was a result of soot collapse inside DPF channels. The proposed hypothesis for soot collapse was a combination of factors such as passive regeneration, high humidity, extended soak period, high soot loading and high exhaust flow rate. The passive regeneration due to in-situ NO2 and high humidity caused the straw like soot deposited inside DPF channels to take a concave shape making the collapse easier during high vehicle acceleration. It was shown that even if one of these factor was missing, the undesirable soot collapse and subsequent back pressure increase did not occur. Currently, one of the very popular NOx reduction technologies is the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) on Filter which does not have any platinum group metal (PGM) in the washcoat.

Analysis of Particle Mass and Size Emissions from a Catalyzed Diesel Particulate Filter during Regeneration by Means of Actual Injection Strategies in Light Duty Engines

The diesel particulate filters (DPF) are considered the most robust technologies for particle emission reduction both in terms of mass and number. On the other hand, the increase of the backpressure in the exhaust system due to the accumulation of the particles in the filter walls leads to an increase of the engine fuel consumption and engine power reduction. To limit the filter loading, and the backpressure, a periodical regeneration is needed. Because of the growing interest about particle emission both in terms of mass, number and size, it appears important to monitor the evolution of the particle mass and number concentrations and size distribution during the regeneration of the DPFs. For this matter, in the presented work the regeneration of a catalyzed filter was fully analyzed. Particular attention was dedicated to the dynamic evolution both of the thermodynamic parameters and particle emissions.

Analytical Evaluation of Engine and Vehicle Hardware Effects on Vehicle Response

As the proliferation of downsized boosted engines continues, it becomes increasingly important to understand how engine and vehicle hardware impact vehicle transient response. Several different methodologies can be used to understand hardware impacts, such as vehicle testing, 0-D vehicle models, and constant engine speed load steps. The next evolution of predicting vehicle transient response is to transition to a system level vehicle analysis by coupling a detailed engine model, utilizing crank angle resolved calculations, with a simple vehicle model. This allows for the evaluation of engine and vehicle hardware effects on vehicle acceleration and the rate of change of vehicle acceleration, or jerk, and the tradeoffs that can be made between the hardware in early program development. By comparing this system level vehicle model to the different methodologies, it can be shown that a system level vehicle analysis allows for higher fidelity evaluations of vehicle transient response.

China Market Gasoline Review Using Fuel Particulate Emission Correlation Indices

The impact of gasoline composition on vehicle particulate emissions response has been widely investigated and documented. Correlation equations between fuel composition and particulate emissions have also been documented, e.g. Particulate Matter Index (PMI) and Particulate Evaluation Index (PEI). Vehicle PM/PN emissions correlate very well with these indices. In a previous paper, global assessment with PEI on fuel sooting tendency was presented [1]. This paper will continue the previous theme by the authors, and cover China gasoline in more detail. With air pollution an increasing concern, along with more stringent emission requirements in China, both OEMs and oil industries are facing new challenges. Emissions controls require a systematic approach on both fuels and vehicles. Chinese production vehicle particulate emissions for a range of PEI fuels are also presented.

Combustion Timing Control Based on First Modal Coefficients of Individual Cylinder Pressure Traces

When an SI engine is equipped with individual cylinder pressure transducers, combustion timing of each cylinder can be precisely controlled by adjusting spark timing in real-time. In this paper, a novel method based on principal component analysis (PCA) is introduced to control the combustion timing with a significantly less computational burden than a conventional method.

Combustion-Timing Control of Low-Temperature Gasoline Combustion (LTGC) Engines by Using Double Direct-Injections to Control Kinetic Rates

Low-temperature gasoline combustion (LTGC) engines can provide high efficiencies and extremely low NOx and particulate emissions, but controlling the combustion timing remains a challenge. This paper explores the potential of Partial Fuel Stratification (PFS) to provide fast control of CA50 in an LTGC engine. Two different compression ratios are used (CR=16:1 and 14:1) that provide high efficiencies and are compatible with mixed-mode SI-LTGC engines. The fuel used is a research grade E10 gasoline (RON 92, MON 85) representative of a regular-grade market gasoline found in the United States. The fuel was supplied with a gasoline-type direct injector (GDI) mounted centrally in the cylinder. To create the PFS, the GDI injector was pulsed twice each engine cycle. First, an injection early in the intake stroke delivered the majority of the fuel (70 - 80%), establishing the minimum equivalence ratio in the charge.

Comparison of Stochastic Pre-Ignition Behaviors on a Turbocharged Gasoline Engine with Various Fuels and Lubricants

Stochastic pre-ignition (SPI) has been commonly observed in turbocharged spark-ignition direct-injection (SIDI) engines at low-speed and high-load conditions, which causes extremely high cylinder pressures that can damage an engine immediately or degrade the engine life. The compositions and properties of fuels and lubricants have shown a strong impact on SPI frequency. This study experimentally evaluated SPI behaviors on a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged SIDI engine with China V market fuel and China fuel blended to US Tier II fuel specifications. China V market fuel showed significantly higher SPI frequency and severity than China blended US Tier II fuel, which was attributed to its lower volatility between 100 °C to 150 °C (or lower T60 to T90 in the distillation curve). Two different formulations of lubricant oils were also tested and their impact on SPI were compared.

The Particulate Matter Index (PMI) is a tool that provides an indication of a fuel’s tendency to produce Particulate Matter (PM) emissions. Currently, the index is being used by various fuel laboratories and the Automotive OEMs as a tool to understand the gasoline fuel’s impact on both PM from engine hardware and vehicle-out emissions. In addition, a newer index that could be used to give an indication of the PM tendency of the gasoline range fuels, called the Particulate Evaluation Index (PEI), is shown to have a good correlation to PMI. The data used in those indices are collected from chemical analytical methods. This paper will compare gas chromatography (GC) methods used by three laboratories and discuss how the different techniques may affect the PMI and PEI calculation.

Correlation of Detailed Hydrocarbon Analysis with Simulated Distillation of US Market Gasoline Samples and its Effect on the PEI-SimDis Equation of Calculated Vehicle Particulate Emissions

Several predictive equations based on the chemical composition of gasoline have been shown to estimate the particulate emissions of light-duty, internal combustion engine (ICE) powered vehicles and are reviewed in this paper. Improvements to one of them, the PEISimDis equation are detailed herein. The PEISimDis predictive equation was developed by General Motor’s researchers in 2022 based on two laboratory gas chromatography (GC) analyses; Simulated Distillation (SimDis), ASTM D7096 and Detailed Hydrocarbon Analysis (DHA), ASTM D6730. The DHA method is a gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) methodology and provides the detailed speciation of the hundreds of hydrocarbon species within gasoline. A DHA’s aromatic species from carbon group seven through ten plus (C7 – C10+) can be used to calculate a Particulate Evaluation Index (PEI) of a gasoline, however this technique takes many hours to derive because of its long chromatography analysis time.

Corroborative Evaluation of the Real-World Energy Saving Potentials of InfoRich Eco-Autonomous Driving (iREAD) System

There has been an increasing interest in exploring the potential to reduce energy consumption of future connected and automated vehicles. People have extensively studied various eco-driving implementations that leverage preview information provided by on-board sensors and connectivity, as well as the control authority enabled by automation. Quantitative real-world evaluation of eco-driving benefits is a challenging task. The standard regulatory driving cycles used for measuring exhaust emissions and fuel economy are not truly representative of real-world driving, nor for capturing how connectivity and automation might influence driving trajectories. To adequately consider real-world driving behavior and potential “off-cycle” impacts, this paper presents four collaborative evaluation methods: large-scale simulation, in-depth simulation, vehicle-in-the-loop testing, and vehicle road testing.

Cosmetic Corrosion Test for Aluminum Autobody Panels: Final Report

Over the past several years a task group within the SAE Automotive Corrosion and Protection (ACAP) Committee has conducted extensive on-vehicle field testing and numerous accelerated lab tests with the goal of establishing a standard accelerated test method for cosmetic corrosion evaluations of finished aluminum auto body panels. This project has been a cooperative effort with OEM, supplier, and consultant participation and was also supported in part by DOE through USAMP (AMD 309). The focus of this project has been the identification of a standardized accelerated cosmetic corrosion test that exhibits the same appearance, severity, and type of corrosion products that are exhibited on identical painted aluminum panels exposed to service relevant environments. Multi-year service relevant exposures were conducted by mounting panels on-vehicles in multiple locations in the US and Canada.

Detailed Analyses and Correlation of Fuel Effects on Stochastic Preignition

Stochastic or Low-Speed Preignition (SPI or LSPI) is an undesirable abnormal combustion phenomenon encountered in spark-ignition engines. It is characterized by very early heat release and high cylinder pressure and can cause knock, noise and ultimately engine damage. Much of the focus on mitigating SPI has been directed towards the engine oil formulation, leading to the emergence of the Sequence IX test and second-generation GM dexos® oil requirements. Engine design, calibration and fuels also contribute to the prevalence of SPI. As part of a recently completed research consortium, a series of engine tests were completed to determine the impact of fuel composition on SPI frequency. The fuel blends had varying levels of paraffins, olefins, aromatics and ethanol.

Development of an Alternative Predictive Model for Gasoline Vehicle Particulate Matter and Particulate Number

The Particulate Matter Index (PMI) is a helpful tool which provides an indication of a fuel’s sooting tendency. Currently, the index is being used by various laboratories and OEMs as a metric to understand the gasoline fuels impact on both sooting found on engine hardware and vehicle out emissions. This paper will explore a new method that could be used to give indication of the sooting tendency of the gasoline range fuels, called the Particulate Evaluation Index (PEI), and provide the detailed equation in its initial form. In addition, the PEI will be shown to have a good correlation agreement to PMI. The paper will then give a detailed explanation of the data used to develop it. Initial vehicle PM/PN data will also be presented that shows correlations of the indices to the vehicle response.

Downsized Boosted Dilute Combustion, Exhaust Compounded (DBDC+EC) Experimental Engine Design, Thermodynamic Model Comparison, and Performance Potential Predictions

An experimental piston compounded engine was designed with guidance from thermodynamic modeling, then was built and tested to compare the model predictions to measured results. The piston-compounded concept has shown great potential for improvements in efficiency over current state-of-the-art light-duty engines through the use of an efficient second expansion process to more fully recover energy still present in the exhaust gasses, and was further developed into the Downsized Boosted Dilute Combustion, Exhaust Compounded (DBDC+EC) engine presented here. This paper documents some of the more unique design elements of this engine as well as a performance comparison between test data and modeling expectations. Ultimately, an experimental stoichiometric spark-ignited piston compounded engine was designed, five blocks were built, and collectively they were run for thousands of hours.

Downsized-Boosted Gasoline Engine with Exhaust Compound and Dilute Advanced Combustion

This article presents experimental results obtained with a disruptive engine platform, designed to maximize the engine efficiency through a synergetic implementation of downsizing, high compression-ratio, and importantly exhaust-heat energy recovery in conjunction with advanced lean/dilute low-temperature type combustion. The engine architecture is a supercharged high-power output, 1.1-liter engine with two-firing cylinders and a high compression ratio of 13.5: 1. The integrated exhaust heat recovery system is an additional, larger displacement, non-fueled cylinder into which the exhaust gas from the two firing cylinders is alternately transferred to be further expanded. The main goal of this work is to implement in this engine, advanced lean/dilute low-temperature combustion for low-NOx and high efficiency operation, and to address the transition between the different operating modes.

Driving Automation System Test Scenario Development Process Creation and Software-in-the-Loop Implementation

Automated driving systems (ADS) are one of the key modern technologies that are changing the way we perceive mobility and transportation. In addition to providing significant access to mobility, they can also be useful in decreasing the number of road accidents. For these benefits to be realized, candidate ADS need to be proven as safe, robust, and reliable; both by design and in the performance of navigating their operational design domain (ODD). This paper proposes a multi-pronged approach to evaluate the safety performance of a hypothetical candidate system. Safety performance is assessed through using a set of test cases/scenarios that provide substantial coverage of those potentially encountered in an ODD. This systematic process is used to create a library of scenarios, specific to a defined domain. Beginning with a system-specific ODD definition, a set of core competencies are identified.

Effects of Oxygenates and Aromatics in Gasoline on Vehicle Particulate Emissions

There have been tremendous improvements in China fuel quality in recent years in conjunction with newly implemented vehicle emissions standards to combat air pollution. The focus of concern is particulate emissions from gasoline engines especially from high volume gasoline direct inject (GDI) engines, therefore the China 6 (GB 18351.6-2016) emission standard introduces strict PM/PN requirements. Because the fuel and vehicle are an integrated system, the composition of gasoline is one of the factors affecting PM/PN emissions. Ethanol and aromatics are widely used as octane boosters, changing the composition of China’s gasoline pool. In this study, two gasoline oxygenates, ethanol and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), and heavy aromatic hydrocarbons were studied in vehicles with a GDI engines. Vehicle tests were performed on the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC).

Estimating Brake Pad Life in Regenerative Braking Intensive Vehicle Applications

Regenerative braking without question greatly impacts brake pad service life in the field, in most cases extending it significantly. Estimating its impact precisely has not been an overriding concern - yet - due in part to the extensive sharing of brake components between regen-intensive battery-electric and hybrid vehicles, and their more friction-brake intensive internal combustion engine powered sibling. However, a multitude of factors are elevating the need for a more accurate estimation, including the emerging of dedicated electric vehicle architectures with opportunities for optimizing the friction brake design, a sharp focus on brake particulate emissions and the role of regenerative braking, a need to make design decisions for features such as corrosion protection for brake pad and pad slide components, and the emergence of driver-facing features such as Brake Pad Life Monitoring.

Evaluation of High Resistance Connection in Automotive Application

Electrical connections have a normal operational temperature range. A high resistance, such as a poor connection, in an electrical circuit has been reported to cause a temperature increase exceeding normal operational range at the connection. This study measures the temperature increase in a typical automotive bolted battery cable connection with low to zero torque values and simulated high resistance under different load conditions. The torque is changed from maximum design value to 0 Nm and the temperature increase at the connection is measured. The high resistance connections, manually created by adjusting the contacts, are tested for several power loss values at the connection. The temperature rise under these conditions at the connection is measured and subsequently recorded. The maximum temperature increase at the bolted cable connection recorded at low torque values including 0 Nm torque compared to the maximum typical design value of 17 Nm is 10.5 °C.
