A Predicting and Improvement of Side Impact Using the CC-CTP

Extensive researches are being performed on a world wide basis with the aim of enhancing occupant protection on the side impact. The test methodology for side impact can be divided into two general groups; Sub-System Tests Full Scale Tests. However, the advantages of full scale test is that it is possible to make an integrated statement on the protective potential of the structural stiffness of the struck vehicle and the padding for a selected collision speed and type of collision. The advantages of sub-system test methodology can be simulates more exactly for wide range of accident(i.e. collision directions, impact points etc.). The latter test procedure can be carried out at a relatively earlier stage in the development of a new vehicle, and also can be reduce the time and cost. The Computer Controlled Composite Test Procedure(CC-CTP) presented in this paper has been developed by CCMC (Committee of Common Market Automobile Constructors).

A Primer on Building a Hardware in the Loop Simulation and Validation for a 6X4 Tractor Trailer Model

This research was to model a 6×4 tractor-trailer rig using TruckSim and simulate severe braking maneuvers with hardware in the loop and software in the loop simulations. For the hardware in the loop simulation (HIL), the tractor model was integrated with a 4s4m anti-lock braking system (ABS) and straight line braking tests were conducted. In developing the model, over 100 vehicle parameters were acquired from a real production tractor and entered into TruckSim. For the HIL simulation, the hardware consisted of a 4s4m ABS braking system with six brake chambers, four modulators, a treadle and an electronic control unit (ECU). A dSPACE simulator was used as the “interface” between the TruckSim computer model and the hardware.

In diesel engine development, fuel consumption, emissions and combustion noise have been main development objectives for fuel economy, low emissions and NVH. These main objectives can be achieved with advanced engine technologies. As electronic actuating systems are widely applied on diesel engines, elaborate control is required. This is because the main development targets are greatly affected by engine control parameters but frequently have a trade-off relationship. Therefore, the optimization of combustion control parameters is one of the most challenging tasks for improvement. As an efficient method, the DOE methodology has been used in engine calibration. In order to develop a mathematical model, the input and output values must be measured. Unlike other variables, combustion noise has been continually reported to have better indication method in simplified way. In this paper, advanced noise index from cylinder pressure signal is applied on engine test.

A Study of Ride Analysis of Medium Trucks with Varying the Characteristics of Suspension Design Parameters

Ride quality of medium truck became a very important factor in the suspension design, due to the demand of more comfortable ride of passengers. This study describes how to determine and evaluate design parameters related to the chassis suspension system with time and frequency analysis. The spring stiffness and damping force of the chassis suspension system were obtained by observing the vertical acceleration PSD. The simulation was carried out on various road profiles, which was suggested by ISO. The pitching motion of the medium size truck was observed to improve the ride quality. A computer simulated truck model was constructed using DADS, a commercial dynamic analysis software, in order to simulate the truck motions. From the result of the sensitivity analysis of suspension parameters, it was concluded that the spring and the shock absorbers affect the pitching of the vehicle. In order to validate the computer simulated truck model, a physical prototype was constructed and tested.

A Study on the Transient Characteristics of Automatic Transmission with Detailed Dynamic Modeling

Transient characteristics during gear ratio change including the disturbance of output torque have been important issues in the study of passenger car automatic transmission. In this paper, to investigate the transient characteristics during gear ratio change, a detailed dynamic model of the power transmission system of a passenger car focused on the automatic transmission was proposed and the governing dynamic equations were derived and solved. The results of simulation showed good agreements with the experimental data. It was proved that the suggested dynamic model is very useful to analyze the phenomena occurred during the speed ratio change.

A throttle/brake control law for vehicle intelligent cruise control

A throttle/brake control law for the intelligent cruise control (ICC) system has been proposed in this paper. The ICC system consists of a vehicle detection sensor, a controller and throttle/brake actuators. For the control of a throttle/brake system, we introduced a solenoid-valve-controlled electronic vacuum booster (EVB) and a step-motor-controlled throttle actuator. Nonlinear computer model for the electronic vacuum booster has been developed and the simulations were performed using a complete nonlinear vehicle model. The proposed control law in this paper consists of an algorithm that generates the desired acceleration/deceleration profile in an ICC situation, a throttle/brake switching logic and a throttle and brake control algorithm based on vehicle dynamics. The control performance has been investigated through computer simulations and experiments.

An Experimental Comparison Between Air-Assisted Injection System and High Pressure Injection System at 2-Stroke Engine

This study presents engine test results of HMC's piston-ported 2-stroke gasoline engine. This single cylinder engine of 400cc displacement has featured in direct injection(DI) of fuel and external blower scavenging of air. Two different concepts of DI system were adopted, one is high pressure fuel injection(HPFI) system for solid fuel only and the other is low pressure air-assisted fuel injection(AAFI) system. Two kinds of engines with different scavenging intake port shapes and areas were tested to find the effect of scavenging port type on engine performance. Also tested were trends of BSFC, BSHC and BSCO versus fuel injection timing and engine speed with HPFI and AAFI, respectively. Power and boost pressure at full load and BSFC and BSHC at part load were tested.

Analysis of structure-borne noise and structural dynamic modification

Faced with the challenge to improve vehicle quality and reduce the development cycle for new product, experimental and/or analytical approach have been used to assure improvements in vehicle NVH performance. Prediction of dynamic characteristics is the most important factor to shorten development time. In order to predict car interior noise at the pre-design stage, a total vehicle without chassis parts and its cavity are fully modeled by finite elements. To reduce FE model generation time and get more effective design modification index, hybrid model combining FE data and experimental data is used. In this paper, the hybrid modeling based on FBS technique is used for identifying substructure contribution and modification. Driving force is also acquired by powertrain test. To verify this model, a passenger car is tested and compared with analysis data.

Body Optimization for Front Loading Design Process

An innovative design process is proposed to be applicable in the early conceptual design phase as a means of front loading design. The objective of the study is to minimize trial and errors in the detailed design phase and to shorten the overall design period. The process includes design optimization which is based on efficient modeling techniques. An integrated CAD/CAE modeling method and a simplified quality FE model are key factors in the course of effectuation. The conceptual modeling takes into account the adaptability of computer-generated models with the use of CAD/CAE integrated design environment. To achieve maximum efficiency in the repeated computations in optimization, an FE modeling approach is introduced in terms of simplicity and quality. The proposed FE modeling employs beam and spring elements to construct vehicle body models, which is targeted to produce an instant analysis result with a robust conceptual design at the incipient phase of development.

Control of Steer by Wire System for Reference Steering Wheel Torque Tracking and Return-Ability

This paper proposes a torque tracking algorithm via steer by wire to achieve the target steering feel and proposed a modified friction model to obtain return-ability. A three dimensional reference steering wheel torque map is designed using the measurement data of the steering characteristics of the target vehicle at a transition test and a weave test. In order to track the reference steering wheel torque, a sliding mode control is used in the tracking algorithm. In addition, to achieve return-ability, the modified friction model for steer by wire is used instead of the friction model defined in the reference steering wheel torque map. The modified friction model is composed of various models according to the angular velocity. The angular velocity and the angular acceleration used in the control algorithm are estimated using a kalman filter.

Design Optimization of Suspension Kinematic and Compliance Characteristics

In the early stage of vehicle development process, it is customary to establish a set of goals for each kinematic and compliance (K&C) characteristic and try to find out design variables such as the location of hard points and bushing stiffness which can achieve these goals. However, since it is very difficult to find out adequate set of design variables which satisfy all the goals, many engineers should rely on their own experiences and intuitions, or repeat trial and error to design a new suspension and improve old one. In this research, we develop a suspension design process by which suspension K&C characteristic targets can be achieved systemically and automatically. For this purpose, design optimization schemes such as design of experiments (DoE) and gradient-based local optimization algorithm are adopted.

Development of Effective Bicycle Model for Wide Ranges of Vehicle Operations

This paper proposes an effective nonlinear bicycle model including longitudinal, lateral, and yaw motions of a vehicle. This bicycle model uses a simplified piece-wise linear tire model and tire force tuning algorithm to produce closely matching vehicle trajectory compared to real vehicle for wide vehicle operation ranges. A simplified piece-wise tire model that well represents nonlinear tire forces was developed. The key parameters of this model can be chosen from measured tire forces. For the effects of dynamic load transfer due to sharp vehicle maneuvers, a tire force tuning algorithm that dynamically adjusts tire forces of the bicycle model based on measured vehicle lateral acceleration is proposed. Responses of the proposed bicycle model have been compared with commercial vehicle dynamics model (CarSim) through simulation in various vehicle maneuvers (ramp steer, sine-with-dwell).

Development of Integrated Chassis Control for Limit Handling

This paper presents the integrated chassis control(ICC) of four-wheel drive(4WD), electronic stability control(ESC), electronic control suspension(ECS), and active roll stabilizer(ARS) for limit handling. The ICC consists of three layers: 1) a supervisor determines target vehicle states; 2) upper level controller calculates generalized forces; 3) lower level controller, which is contributed in this paper, optimally allocates the generalized force to chassis modules. The lower level controller consists of two integrated parts, 1) longitudinal force control part (4WD/ESC) and 2) vertical force control part (ECS/ARS). The principal concept of both algorithms is optimally utilizing the capability of the each tire by monitoring tire saturation, with tire combined slip. By monitoring tire saturation, 4WD/ESC integrated system minimizes the sum of the tire saturation, and ECS/ARS integrated system minimizes the variance of the tire saturation.

Development of an Algorithm to Automatically Detect and Distinguish Squeak and Rattle Noises

Squeak and rattle (S&R) noises are undesirable noises caused by friction-induced vibration or impact between surfaces. While several computer programs have been developed to automatically detect and rate S&R events over the years, no reported work has been found that can detect squeak and rattle noises and distinguish them. Because the causes of squeak noises and rattle noises are different, knowing if it is a squeak noise or rattle noise will be very helpful for automotive engineers to choose an appropriate measure to solve the problem. The authors have developed a new algorithm to differentiate squeak noises and rattle noises, and added it to the S&R detection algorithm they had developed previously. The new algorithm utilizes a combination of sound quality metrics, specifically sharpness, roughness, and fluctuation strength.

As in the definition, the important actions involved in the operation of an air conditioning system are temperature and humidity control, air purification and movement. For these conditions this paper proposes a Automatic Climate Control(ACC) system of the bus. The system has cooling, heating, and dehumidifying modes, and is governed by dual 8-bit microprocessors. These modes are broken down into sub-modules dealing with control of the compressor, blower speed, damper position, air purifier, ventilators, preheater, air mixing damper and so on.

Development of finite element Euro-SID model

In contrast to the other types of crash simulations, integrated analysis is needed to perform the side impact simulation, and the acquired injury values are so sensitive that they are difficult to assess by the deformed vehicle structure itself. Accurate FE Euro-side impact dummy (EURO-SID) model is needed to predict the various injury values in Euro side-impact simulation. In the past, rigid body model and coarse FE model have been used. The advantage of these models is low computing power. By the way, they have lack of injury predictability in integrated simulations. The deviations are caused by inaccurate geometry and improper material characteristics expression for individual components. Therefore, new Euro side-impact dummy model is developed through mass (inertia), component and sled validation. In this paper, validation results are illustrated, and their application results in two kinds of full car simulations are introduced.

Development of the Active Sound Generation Technology Using Motor Driven Power Steering System

As the original engine sound is usually not enough to satisfy the driver’s desire for a sporty and fascinating sound, Active Noise Control (ANC) and Active Sound Design (ASD) have been great technologies in automobiles for a long time. However, these technologies which enhance the sound of vehicles using loud speakers or electromagnetic actuators etc. lead to the increase of cost and weight due to the use of external amplifiers or actuators. This paper presents a new technology for generating a target sound by the active control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) of a mass-production steering system. The existing steering hardware or motor is not changed, but only additional software is added. Firstly, an algorithm of this technology, called Active Sound Generation (ASG), is introduced which is compiled and included in the ECU target code. Then the high frequency noise issue and its countermeasures are presented.

Enhancement of Vehicle Dynamics Model Using Genetic Algorithm and Estimation Theory

A determination of the vehicle states and tire forces is critical to the stability of vehicle dynamic behavior and to designing automotive control systems. Researchers have studied estimation methods for the vehicle state vectors and tire forces. However, the accuracy of the estimation methods is closely related to the employed model. In this paper, tire lag dynamics is introduced in the model. Also application of estimation methods in order to improve the model accuracy is presented. The model is developed by using the global searching algorithm, a Genetic Algorithm, so that the model can be used in the nonlinear range. The extended Kalman filter and sliding mode observer theory are applied to estimate the vehicle state vectors and tire forces. The obtained results are compared with measurements and the outputs from the ADAMS full vehicle model. [15]

Flow Modeling for the Branched Intake Manifold Engine

A flow model is a convenient tool for developing the engine intake system. Two flow models for the branched engine intake were developed by the finite difference method and the method of characteristics. The results from the models were compared with the experimental data and the appropriate boundary conditions were established for each model. Modeling the flow at the intake and exhaust valves with a cylinder and at the pipe branches were the most critical part of the flow models affecting the accuracy of the solutions. From two models, it was found that the finite difference model was simpler than the characteristic model in formulation with the better accuracy. The effects of valve timings and intake geometry were studied by the flow models to design the optimum intake system.

Incorporation of Friction Material Surface Inhomogeneity in Complex Eigenvalue Analysis to Improve the Accuracy of Brake Squeal Analysis

The sliding surface of the brake friction material is not uniform but composed of random contact plateaus with a broad pressure distribution, which are known to closely related to the triggering mechanism of friction induced noise and vibrations. The non-uniform contact plateaus are attributed to the various ingredients in the friction material with a broad range of physical properties and morphology and the size and stiffness of the plateau play crucial roles in determining the friction instability. The incorporation of friction surface inhomogeneity is, therefore, crucial and has to be counted to improve the accuracy of the numerical calculation to simulate brake noise. In this study, the heterogeneous nature of the friction material surface was employed in the simulation to improve the correlation between numerical simulations and experimental results.
