A Graphical Representation of Road Profile Characteristics

Load data representing severe customer usage is required during the chassis development process. One area of current research is the use of road profiles for predicting chassis loads. The most direct method of predicting these loads is to run dynamic simulations of the vehicle using numerous road profiles as the excitation. This onerous task may be avoided, and a greatly reduced number of simulations would be required, if roads having similar characteristics can be grouped. Currently, road profiles are characterized by their spectral content. It has been noted by several researches, however, that road profiles are generally nonstationary signals that contain significant transient events and are not well described in the spectral domain. The objective of this work, then, is to develop a method by which the characteristics of the road can be captured by describing these constitutive transient events.

A New Way of Electrical/Electronic Systems Endurance Testing of Vehicles in a Real World Environment Prior to Production Launch

With the increasing emphasis on Systems Engineering, there is a need to ensure that Electrical/Electronic (E/E) Systems Endurance Testing of vehicles, in a real world environment, prior to Production Launch, is performed in a manner and at a technological level that is commensurate with the high level of electronics and computers in contemporary vehicles. Additionally, validating the design and performance of individual standalone electronic systems and modules “on the bench” does not guarantee that all the permutations and combinations of real-world hardware, software, and driving conditions are taken into account. Traditional Proving Ground (PG) vehicle testing focuses mainly on powertrain durability testing, with only a simple checklist being used by the PG drivers as a reminder to cycle some of the electrical components such as the power window switches, turn signals, etc.

CAE Fatigue Prediction of Fuel Tank Straps using Proving Ground Loads

The durability of fuel tank straps is essential for vehicle safety. Extensive physical tests are conducted to verify designs for durability. Due to the complexity of the loads and the fuel-to-tank interaction, computer-aided-engineering (CAE) simulation has had limited application in this area. This paper presents a CAE method for fuel tank strap durability prediction. It discusses the analytical loads, modeling of fuel-to-tank interaction, dynamic analysis methods, and fatigue analysis methods. Analysis results are compared to physical test results. This method can be used in either a fuel-tank-system model or a full vehicle model. It can give directional design guidance for fuel tank strap durability in the early stages of product development to reduce vehicle development costs.

Computer Aided Simulations in Machining Applications

Computer applications have been widely used to assist product design. The successes and sophistication of computer aided engineering (CAE) techniques are respectfully recognized in this field. CAE applications in the manufacturing area however are still developing, although the manufacturing community is increasingly starting to pay attentions to computer simulations in its daily workings. This paper will briefly introduce some of these applications and promote awareness of computer simulations in manufacturing area. It contains four main sections: finite element analysis (FEA) in machining fixture design, FEA applications in component assembly, machining process simulations and machining vibrations in the milling operation. Each section comes with a practical case study, potential benefits are identified and conclusions are presented by using an integrated design and analysis approach.

Object Oriented Design Approach to Systems Engineering of a Mechanical Steering System

The successful development of new products is contingent on clearly understanding product requirements and defining appropriate design activities to deliver the right product. Even if one can clearly understand the abstract requirements implied by the voice-of-customer (VOC), engineers still work best to a set of specifications that define the product in objective measures. The task of extracting the systems specifications from text versions of product requirements is not trivial. Full order dynamic models of mass, springs and dampers provide understanding of vehicle performance; however, the engineer has to define the dynamic characteristics based on his understanding of requirements and translate them into technical specifications. The result can be too dependent on human assumptions and judgments at this point. This work was done to understand how to apply Object Oriented Design (OOD) methodology to trace requirements of a mechanical system to design parameters.

Road Load Data Estimation on Multiaxial Test Rigs for Exhaust System Vibrations

Road inputs are one of the most significant components of operational loading of motor vehicles and their exhaust systems. Even if road profiles remain the same, the response spectrums measured on exhaust system components vary for different vehicle and exhaust system combinations. Existing exhaust system product development and design approval procedures require multi-channel data acquisition on vehicles under specified driving conditions and at proving grounds to cover all representative customer usage events. After analysis and reduction, damage relevant sections of this data package will be used for test lab simulation purposes. This vehicle instrumentation and data acquisition process is very time consuming and cost intensive. The method presented here is based on the calculation of the dynamic characteristics of each road segment, or road events using road measured acceleration time histories, and lab measured transfer functions of vehicle body and suspension.

Systems Engineering Approach for Vehicle Specification

This paper discusses a practical use of the Systems Engineering Process as it is implemented in a Truck OEM. The process presented is focused on the Electrical and Electronics area, but can be applied to other systems on the vehicle and to the vehicle level requirements. Systems Engineering rationale is summarized based upon historical impacts and the application of Systems Engineering to address those impacts. Prior System Development Processes are reviewed in light of modern Systems Engineering approaches, leading to the synthesis of the Systems Engineering Documentation Set for the Vehicle and the Vehicle's Electrical and Electronic Systems. The analysis for this approach looks at the application of Systems Engineering Principles throughout the lifecycle of the vehicle, going beyond the boundaries of traditional requirements gathering and analysis.

Systems Engineering Efforts - What, When and How Much?

This paper describes the electrical system development for the headlight feature in an International High Performance Vehicle. Systems engineers developed several iterations of functional requirements, functional block diagrams, state diagrams, and body controller software requirements early in the development cycle at considerable engineering expense. The hardware design team found the functional block diagrams useful, however the software design team did not find the other artifacts useful. The software design teams chose to implement a design that was very similar to a current product offering and did not map to the system proposed by the systems engineering team. This paper provides examples of the Systems Engineering artifacts and shows when they were developed in the project timeline.

The importance of requirements management in systems engineering, and associated methods are also discussed. The paper also highlights tools and techniques that support systems engineering. Additionally, the benefits of systems engineering are contrasted with the consequences of component-centric product engineering.
