4WID/4WIS Electric Vehicle Modeling and Simulation of Special Conditions

This paper introduces the characteristics of the 4 wheel independent driving/4 wheel independent steering (4WID/4WIS) electric vehicle (EV). Models of Subsystems and the vehicle are constructed based on Matlab/simulink. The vehicle model allows the inputs of different drive torques and steer angles of four wheels. The dynamic characteristics of drive motors and steer motors are considered, and also it can reflect the vehicle longitudinal dynamics change due to the increase of the mass and inertia of the four wheels. Besides, drive mode selection function that is unique to this type vehicle is involved. Simulations and analyses of crab, oblique driving and zero radius turning which are the special conditions of 4WID/4WIS EV are conducted. The results show that the model can reflect the dynamic response characteristics. The model can be used to the simulation analyses of handling, stability, energy saving and control strategies verification of 4WID/4WIS EVs.

A Dynamic Model for Tire/Road Friction Estimation under Combined Longitudinal/Lateral Slip Situation

A new dynamic tire model for estimating the longitudinal/lateral road-tire friction force was derived in this paper. The model was based on the previous Dugoff tire model, in consideration of its drawback that it does not reflect the actual change trend that the tire friction force decreases with the increment of wheel slip ratio when it enters into the nonlinear region. The Dugoff model was modified by fitting a series of tire force data and compared with the commonly used Magic Formula model. This new dynamic friction model is able to capture accurately the transient behavior of the friction force observed during pure longitudinal wheel slip, lateral sideslip and combined slip situation. Simulation has been done under different situations, while the results validate the accuracy of the new tire friction model in predicting tire/road friction force during transient vehicle motion.

A Nonlinear Slip Ratio Observer Based on ISS Method for Electric Vehicles

Knowledge of the tire slip ratio can greatly improve vehicle longitudinal stability and its dynamic performance. Most conventional slip ratio observers were mainly designed based on input of non-driven wheel speed and estimated vehicle speed. However, they are not applicable for electric vehicles (EVs) with four in-wheel motors. Also conventional methods on speed estimation via integration of accelerometer signals can often lead to large offset by long-time integral calculation. Further, model uncertainties, including steady state error and unmodeled dynamics, are considered as additive disturbances, and may affect the stability of the system with estimated state error. This paper proposes a novel slip ratio observer based on input-to-state stability (ISS) method for electric vehicles with four-wheel independent driving motors.

A Novel Hybrid Technique for Thermal Analysis of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Used in Electric Vehicle Application

Due to high torque and power density, permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) has become the most viable candidate for electric vehicle (EV) traction application. However, to obtain such high torque and power density within a compact motor structure can cause a significant temperature rise within the motor while operating. As a result of high temperature rise, permanent magnet demagnetization may even occur within the motor. Thus, PMSM is susceptible to thermal instability. Therefore, to ensure thermal stability during varying operating conditions, thermal analysis is a mandatory procedure in addition to electromagnetic analysis during the design phase of the motor. In this paper, a computationally efficient numerical finite element analysis (FEA) process has been proposed for thermal analysis of PMSM.

A Post-processor for Finite Element Stress-based Fatigue Analysis

Explicit finite element simulations were conducted on an aluminum wheel model where a rotating bend moment was applied on its hub to simulate wheel cornering fatigue testing. A post-processor was developed to calculate equivalent von Mises alternating and mean stresses from stress tensor. The safety factors of fatigue design for each finite element were determined to assess the fatigue performance by utilizing the Goodman linear relationship. Elements with low safety factors were identified due to the prescribed boundary conditions and stress concentrations arising from wheel geometry.

ABS Control Algorithm Based on Direct Slip Rate for Hybrid Brake System

The brake-by-wire system (BBW) is better match the new energy vehicle in the future direction of development. The electro-mechanical brake (EMB) is lack of the brake failure backup and need a high 42 V voltage for the power supply. This paper presents a new brake-by-wire hybrid brake system (HBS) with the electro-hydraulic brake (EHB) equipped on the front wheels and the EMB equipped on the rear wheels. The combination of these two brake-by-wire systems has advantages of both the EHB and EMB system. The EMB on the rear wheels totally removing the rear pipes and can be simply mounted. In addition, since the need of brake torque on the rear axle is relatively small, the power supply of EMB can be reduced to 12 V. Meanwhile, the EHB on the front wheels has the failure backup function through the hydraulic line. The HBS can quickly and accurately regulate four wheels brake force of vehicles which can well meet the requirement of antilock brake system (ABS).

Accurate Pressure Control Based on Driver Braking Intention Identification for a Novel Integrated Braking System

With the development of intelligent and electric vehicles, higher requirements are put forward for the active braking and regenerative braking ability of the braking system. The traditional braking system equipped with vacuum booster has difficulty meeting the demand, therefore it has gradually been replaced by the integrated braking system. In this paper, a novel Integrated Braking System (IBS) is presented, which mainly contains a pedal feel simulator, a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), a series of transmission mechanisms, and the hydraulic control unit. As an integrative system of mechanics-electronics-hydraulics, the IBS has complex nonlinear characteristics, which challenge the accurate pressure control. Furthermore, it is a completely decoupled braking system, the pedal force doesn’t participate in pressure-building, so it is necessary to precisely identify driver’s braking intention.

Accurate Pressure Control Strategy of Electronic Stability Program Based on the Building Characteristics of High-Speed Switching Valve

The Electronic Stability Program (ESP), as a key actuator of traditional automobile braking system, plays an important role in the development of intelligent vehicles by accurately controlling the pressure of wheels. However, the ESP is a highly nonlinear controlled object due to the changing of the working temperature, humidity, and hydraulic load. In this paper, an accurate pressure control strategy of single wheel during active braking of ESP is proposed, which doesn’t rely on the specific parameters of the hydraulic system and ESP. First, the structure and working principle of ESP have been introduced. Then, we discuss the possibility of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control based on the mathematical model of the high-speed switching valve. Subsequently, the pressure building characteristics of the inlet and outlet valves are analyzed by the hardware in the Loop (HiL) experimental platform.

Active Four Wheel Brake Proportioning for Improved Performance and Safety

A vehicle undergoing longitudinal or lateral accelerations experiences load transfer, dynamically changing the normal load carried by each tire. Conventional braking systems are designed only to work adequately over a large range of conditions, but often ignore the dynamic state of the tire's normal load. Fortunately, new developments in braking system hardware give designers more control over the application of braking pressures. By identifying the tires that carry increased normal load, and biasing the braking system toward those tires, total braking force can be increased. The purpose of this research is to investigate advantages of open-loop load transfer based active brake pressure distribution. By estimating the tractive ability of the tires as a function of measurable vehicle conditions, brake pressure can be applied in proportions appropriate for the current dynamic state of the vehicle, referred to as Active Brake Proportioning (ABP).

Aging Simulation of Electric Vehicle Battery Cell Using Experimental Data

The adoption of lithium-ion batteries in vehicle electrification is fast growing due to high power and energy demand on hybrid and electric vehicles. However, the battery overall performance changes with time through the vehicle life. This paper investigates the electric vehicle battery cell aging under different usages. Battery cell experimental data including open circuit voltage and internal resistance is utilized to build a typical electric vehicle model in the AVL-Cruise platform. Four driving cycles (WLTP, UDDS, HWFET, and US06) with different ambient temperatures are simulated to acquire the battery cell terminal currents. These battery cell terminal current data are inputs to the MATLAB/Simulink battery aging model. Simulation results show that battery degrades quickly in high ambient temperatures. After 15,000 hours usage in 50 degrees Celsius ambient temperature, the usable cell capacity is reduced up to 25%.

An Efficient Assistance Tool for Evaluating the Effect of Tire Characteristics on Vehicle Pull Problem

The vehicle pull problem is very important to driving safety. Major factors that may cause the pull problem related to tire include variations of geometric dimension (e.g. RPK) and stiffness (e.g. cornering stiffness, aligning stiffness), plysteer and conicity. In previous research, the influencing mechanism of these factors was well studied. But in fact, vehicle pull problem caused by tire is probabilistic. When we assemble four tires onto the car, there could be 384 different assembly arrangements. If there are significant differences among these four tires, there will also be significant differences in the influence of different tire assembly schemes on vehicle pull, which has not been systematically discussed in previous studies. If we want to evaluate the pull performance of all these arrangements by vehicle test, it will be a time consuming process which will take almost 24 working days, along with a high test expense.

An Efficient Hybrid Approach for Design of Automotive Wheel Bearings

Wheel bearings play a crucial role in the mobility of a vehicle by minimizing motive power loss and providing stability in cornering maneuvers. Detailed engineering analysis of a wheel bearing subsystem under dynamic conditions poses enormous challenges due to the nonlinearity of the problem caused by multiple factional contacts between rotating and stationary parts and difficulties in prediction of dynamic loads that wheels are subject to. Commonly used design methodologies are based on equivalent static analysis of ball or roller bearings in which the latter elements may even be represented with springs. In the present study, an advanced hybrid approach is suggested for realistic dynamic analysis of wheel bearings by combining lumped parameter and finite element modeling techniques.

An Empirical Model For Longitudinal Tire-Road Friction Estimation

It's important to monitor the longitudinal friction at the tire/road interface for automotive dynamic control systems like ABS and ASR. Of all the tire friction models the empirical model provides a good illustration on longitudinal wheel forces. An improved exponential friction model based on vehicle driving states was proposed in this paper, the model can monitor the friction characteristics between the tire and road surface for longitudinal braking. Its validity was proven using experiments and comparison with the Pacejka Magic Formula (MF) model and others.

An Evaluation of CFD for Modelling the Flow Around Stationary and Rotating Isolated Wheels

Navier-Stokes calculations for the flow around an isolated wheel have been performed. Both a stationary wheel on a fixed ground and a rotating wheel on a moving ground were considered. Extensive comparisons with experimental measurements of surface static pressure coefficient and wake total pressure are made. These show that CFD can give good qualitative results for the flow field around both stationary and rotating wheels. Highlighted are details about the separation process from the top of the wheel and the flow structure around the wheel contact area.

An Experiment and Simulation Study on Failure of High Voltage Cables under Indentation

Failure of high voltage cables (HVCs) which sometimes occurs in electric vehicle collision is one of the fuses that leads to severe thermal runaway of the traction battery system, which has not gotten thorough investigations. This paper presents an experiment and simulation study on the failure behaviors of HVCs under indentation loadings. Tests were performed with different combinations of indenter (cylinder indenter with a diameter of 5 mm which was labeled as D5, cylinder indenter with a diameter of 15 mm which was labeled as D15 and wedge indenter with an angle of 60° which was labeled as V60) and loading speed (1.5 mm/min for quasi-static and 2m/s for dynamic). Experimental results indicated that the failure behavior of HVCs was both influenced by the indenter shape and loading speeds. Sharp indenter will led to a component failure sequence from outmost to innermost.

Active collision avoidance can assist drivers to avoid longitudinal collision through active brake. Regenerative braking can improve the driving range and braking response speed. At this stage, conventional hydraulic braking system limits the implements of above technologies because of its poor performance of response speed and coordinated control. While the brake-by-wire system is a better actuator that can fulfill requirements of automotive electric and intelligent development due to its rapid response and flexible adjustment. However, the system control algorithm becomes more complicated with introduction of regenerative braking and active collision avoidance function, which is also the main problem solved in this paper.

Analysis of Energy Consumption on Typical Main Cylinder Booster Based Brake-by-Wire System

The traditional vacuum booster is gradually replaced by Brake-by-Wire system (BBW) in modern passenger car, especially Electric Vehicle (EV). Some mechanical and hydraulic components are replaced by electronic components in Brake-by-Wire system. Using BBW system in modern passenger vehicles can not only improve the automotive safety performance, reliability and stability, but also promote vehicle maneuverability, comfort, fuel economy and environmental protection. Although vehicle's braking performance is greatly improved by using BBW, the system will inevitably consume some energy of the vehicle power supply, thus introducing unexpected drawback in comparison with the traditional vacuum assist braking system, since it doesn't need any electric power. Therefore, the analysis of energy consumption on typical main cylinder booster based BBW system under typical driving cycles will contribute to advanced design of current advanced braking system.

Steering movement is the most basic movement of the vehicle, in the car driving process, the driver through the steering wheel has always been to control the direction of the car, in order to achieve their own driving intention. Four Wheel Steering (4WS) is an advanced vehicle control technique which can markedly improve vehicle steering characteristics. Compared with traditional front wheel steering vehicles, 4WS vehicles can steer the front wheels and the rear wheels individually for cornering, according to the vehicle motion states such as the information of vehicle speed, yaw velocity and lateral acceleration. Therefore, 4WS can enhance the handling stability and improve the active safety for vehicles.

As the number of electric vehicles (EVs) within society rapidly increase, the concept of maximizing its efficiency within the electric smart grid becomes crucial. This research presents the impacts of integrating EV charging infrastructures within a smart grid through a vehicle to grid (V2G) program. It also observes the circulation of electric charge within the system so that the electric grid does not become exhausted during peak hours. This paper will cover several different case studies and will analyze the best and worst scenarios for the power losses and voltage profiles in the power distribution system. Specifically, we seek to find the optimal location as well as the ideal number of EVs in the distribution system while minimizing its power losses and optimizing its voltage profile. Verification of the results are primarily conducted using GUIs created on MATLAB.

The use of phase change material (PCM) in a latent heat energy storage (LHES) system has gained significant attention in this field. In contrast to single-phase energy storage materials, PCM offer a more effective heat storage capacity.
