An Evaluation of Gear-Shift Impulse of Two Different Architectures of a High-Torque Capacity Manual Inline Transmission

Manual transmission (MT) is still the most preferred solution for emerging markets due to the lower cost of ownership and maintenance coupled with a higher transmission efficiency. In this regard, continuous improvement of the transmission shift quality is quite essential to meet the growing customer expectations. In the present work, a detailed evaluation of the gear-shift impulse (experienced at the gear-shift knob) is conducted between two different architectures of a manual, high-torque (450 Nm input torque) inline transmission meant for a sports utility vehicle (SUV). The conventional manual inline transmission architecture comprises a common gear pair at the input of the transmission. While this input reduction architecture is the most widely used architecture, having the common gear pair at the output of the transmission is also another option. The synchronizers of the manual transmission need to match the speed of the rotating components just before the gear-shifting event.

Connected vehicle services have come a long way from the early days of telematics, both in terms of breadth of the class of vehicles, and in terms of richness or complexity of the data being handled for Enhancing Customer Experience. The Connectivity Control unit (CCU) is a gateway device for the vehicle to the outside world. While it enables transmission of vehicle data along with the location information. CCU is currently validated in the vehicle to check functionality. It has cost, time drawbacks and prevents effective testing of many scenarios. Bench level validation will not be able to complete functionality validation. There is subset of validation tools or semi-automated solutions are available in the market, but they are not fully functional, and critically cannot perform end to end validation. Automated Test setup for CCU in lab simulating the entire field data of the vehicle with modifiable characteristics.

The SAE J1100 based standard cargo volume index methods and predefined luggage objects are very specific to United States population. The European luggage volume calculation and standard luggage calculations are primarily based on DIN and ISO standards. Luggage volume declaration by manufacturers are based on any of these methods. The calculations are complicated and there is a possibility of declaring different values for similar luggage compartments. The major purchase decision of vehicle is based on its luggage capacity and current methods are very limited to make an intelligent decision by a customer. Market specific customer usage patterns for luggage requirements and protecting them in vehicle architecture upfront in concept stage is important to retain the market position and buying preference of customers. The usage patterns is collected from customer clinics and marketing inputs.

Meeting various customer(s) requirements with the given automotive product portfolio within the stipulated time period is a challenge. Design of product configuration matrix is an intelligent task and it requires information about vehicle performance for different configurations which helps in deciding the level of new development. Most often the situation arises, particularly in the field of NVH, to strike the right balance between engine power and structural parameters of the body. The sensitivity of engine power on the overall NVH behavior is the key information necessary to take major business decisions. In this paper, the effect of change in torsional fluctuation of the engine on the NVH behavior of the rear wheel drive vehicle is experimentally studied. The torsional fluctuation of the driveline is given as an input with the help of an electric motor to the existing test vehicle at its differential end and the current NVH levels are measured.

This mandates robust processes to mitigate potential hazards due to malfunction of electronic systems throughout the product life cycle. With the advent of ISO 26262 [1] which provides guidelines for developing safe cars, the process is getting standardized towards safer mobility. In this paper, the functional safety process is briefly covered and a case study of Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment for specific E/E system is presented. An in-house tool developed for functional safety process and management is covered.

Green Drive - A Holistic Approach Towards Fuel Efficient Driving

In the past few decades, improvement on fuel efficient technologies have progressed rapidly, whereas little emphasis is being made on how the vehicle should be driven. Driving habits significantly influences fuel consumption and poor driving habits leads to increased fuel consumption. In this paper a new system called “Green Drive” is being presented wherein driving habits are closely monitored, evaluated and details are systematically presented to the user. Green Drive system monitors key driving parameters like speed, gear selection, acceleration, unwanted engine idling periods, aggressive braking and clutch override and presents an ecoscore on the infotainment system which is reflection of users driving behavior. The system also offers guidance on the scope for improving driving habits to achieve better ecoscore and hence reduced fuel consumption.

With an intense competitive automotive environment, it becomes imperative for any OEM to launch their products into the market in a short span of time & with a ‘First Time Right’ approach. Within the current scenario in the Automotive Industry, the selection of optimum set of hard points and wheel geometry often becomes an iterative or a trial-and-error process which is both time consuming and involves higher development cost as there may be instances where 2 to 3 sets of iterations are needed before specification is finalized for production. Through this paper, an attempt has been made to develop a methodology for deciding wheel geometry parameters (covered in the later section of this paper like Caster, Camber, Mechanical trail, etc.) [1, 2, 3, 4] for a three wheeled vehicle as a First Time Right (FTR) approach to cut down on conventional, expensive & time-consuming iterative approach.

Next Generation Power Distribution Unit in Wiring Harness

With the exponential advancement in technological features of automobile’s EE architecture, designing of power distribution unit becomes complex and challenging. Due to the increase in the number of features, the overall weight of power distribution unit increases and thereby affecting the overall system cost and fuel economy. The scope of this document is to scale down the weight and space of the power distribution unit without compromising with the current performance. The concept of next generation power distribution unit in automobiles is achieved using miniaturization of its sub-components which involves replacing the mini fuses and JCASE fuses with LP mini and LP JCASE fuses respectively. The transition doesn’t involve any tooling modification and hence saves the tooling cost. Furthermore, to address stringent weight and space targets, LP mini fuses and LP JCASE fuses were further replaced with micro-2 fuse and M-case fuse respectively.

Optimized Soot Monitoring by Ammonia Injection in a sDPF System for BS6.2 Application

The BS6 norms (phase 1) were implemented in India from April 1, 2020 and replaced the previous BS4 norms. Phase 2 of the BS6 norms, which came into effect on April 1, 2023. In accordance with the regulation requirement, effective performance of after treatment systems like DPF and SCR demands critical hardware implementation and robust monitoring strategies in the extended operating zone. Effective OBD monitoring of DPF, which is common to all BSVI certified vehicles, such that the defined strategy detects the presence or absence of the component is imperative. A robust monitoring strategy is developed to detect the presence of the DPF in the real world incorporating the worst possible driving conditions including idling, and irrespective of other environmental factors subject to a location or terrain. The differential pressure sensor across the DPF is used to study the actual pressure drop across the DPF.

Solving Whine Noise in Electric Vehicles: A Comprehensive Study Using Experimental and Multiphysics Techniques

This paper examines one of the approaches used to identify the root causes of sound quality issues in vehicles, including the direct impact of psychoacoustics on the human experience. Specifically, the absence of masking effects provided by traditional combustion engines has made noise and vibration from electric drives significant factors in decision-making processes, with high-pitched tonal noise from electric motors causing annoyance and sound quality concerns for electrified propulsion systems. During vehicle testing at different speeds, a whining noise was observed, leading to an NVH test to locate the noise source. The noise is traced to the transmission by the dominating order of input reduction along with the contribution from the casing resonance. A multi-physics-based e-NVH analysis was performed, and the test data were correlated.
