A Consideration of Vehicle's Door Shutting Performance

Many papers have mentioned, in passing, a phenomena that is known as “airtightness”, which is one factor that hinders automobile doors from closing. It also causes the eardrums of any passengers in the vehicle to be temporarily pressurized when the door is closed. However, few documents have considered this phenomena in detail. In this paper, we investigate the magnitude of “airtightness” as it affects ear pressure and examine its relationship to such factors as the volume of the passenger compartment, door's opening area and its inertial moment. Finally, we utilized estimation methods to predict its influence on the force required to close the door and the amount of the resultant air draft.

Achieving a Vehicle Level Sound Quality Target by a Cascade to System Level Noise and Vibration Targets

This paper describes a process to achieve a pre-defined vehicle level interior sound quality target, by a sound engineering cascade to targeted noise and vibration development at the system level. Air-borne and structure-borne contributors to interior sound are identified at the system level using a comprehensive Transfer Path Analysis (TPA) in both the frequency and time domains. For significant contributors, the relative importance of the source system (powertrain) and path system (vehicle) are determined. System level changes are simulated, and their effect on interior sound evaluated using TPA. A set of feasible changes is identified that, when combined, achieves the vehicle level interior sound quality target. This set of changes defines system level targets for noise and vibration development, cascaded from the vehicle level target.

An Application of Structural-Acoustic Analysis to Car Body Structure

In order to calculate efficiently the characteristics of car body vibration and the acoustic characteristic of the passenger compartment, a structural-acoustic analysis system, ‘CAD-B’, was developed. This system divides the body into three components - front body, main cabin and rear body. The characteristics of front and rear body vibration are expressed in modal parameters. The vibration characteristic throughout the car body is then calculated through the building block approach, while the main cabin remains in finite elements. A good agreement in eigen pairs was seen between this approach and the conventional finite element method. As for the passenger compartment, it is divided into finite elements and its eigen pairs are calculated. Then by linking body vibration with the acoustic characteristic of the passenger compartment, sound pressure in the passenger compartment is calculated.

An Application of Structural-Acoustic Coupling Analysis to Boom Noise

Reduction of interior noise is an important factor in vehicle design and many experimental and theoretical studies have been carried out to find effective noise reduction techniques. Previously, we developed a Structural-Acoustic Uncoupled Program, ACOUST3, as a technique for estimating low-frequency noise in the vehicle interior. In the present work, ACOUST3 has been extended to construct an acoustic coupling analysis system, ASCA, which is used to calculate low-frequency noise, such as boom noise. In order to calculate low-frequency noise accurately, it is necessary to represent the vibration characteristics of the trimmed body as closely as possible. To do this, we built a trimmed body model, incorporating 22 trim parts, based on vibration test results, and found that the calculated results obtained with the model correlated well with experimental data.

Analysis of Disc Brake Squeal, 1992

Eliminating squeal noise generated during braking is an important task for the improvement of vehicle passengers' comfort. Considerable amount of research and development works have been done on the problem to date. In this study, we focused on the analyses of friction self-excited vibration and brake part resonance during high frequency brake squeal. Friction self-excited vibration is caused by the dry friction between pads and rotor, and occurs as a function of their relative sliding velocities. Its vibration frequency can be calculated in relation to the mass and stiffness of the pad sliding surface. Frequency responses of the brake assembly were measured and the vibration modes of the pad, disc and caliper during squeal were identified through modal analysis. Further study led to the development of a computer simulation method for analyzing the vibration modes of brake parts. Analytical results obtained using the method agreed well with the corresponding experimental data.

Analysis of Interior Airflow in a Full-Scale Passenger-Compartment Model Using a Laser-Light-Sheet Method

Flow velocity distributions in the passenger compartment were measured from visualized images of particle flow paths obtained with a full-scale model. The flow paths were visualized using an approach that combined a particle tracing method with a pulse-laser light technique. Air was used as the fluid medium with the full-scale passenger compartment model and water was used as the fluid medium with a one-fourth scale model. A comparison of the results obtained with the two models confirmed that there was good agreement between the flow velocity distributions. Using the full-scale model, measurements were also made of the flow velocity distributions when two dummies were placed in the front-seats.

Analysis of Vibrational Modes of Vehicle Steering Mechanisms

An analysis was made of vibration phenomena in the steering system of a vehicle, when the front wheels have some amount of unbalance. The program included vehicle running tests and bench tests to ascertain some of the factors influencing vibration behavior. A mathematical model of the vibration system was simulated on a digital computer in as much detail as possible. The resultant understanding of the dynamics of the system as a whole led to an extensive theoretical analysis of selected key parameters.

Analytical Study on Engine Vibration Transfer Characteristics Using Single-Shot Combustion

In order to demonstrate the generation mechanism of “combustion noise” separately from “mechanical noise,” the process of transfer in which vibration travels to each engine portion was analyzed through single-shot combustion of a propane-air mixture in the combustion chamber with the crankshaft fixed at a given angle. The effect of the natural frequency of each portion of the engine on the vibration transfer characteristics is discussed by introducing a vibration transfer function. The transfer paths of exciting forces which are caused by the combustion are quantitatively clarified.

The target performance of a new engine has to be obtained under various restrictions such as cost and weihgt. It is particularly important to predict the engine noise and vibration performance at an early stage. For this purpose the analytical methods have been developed, which include the prediction of the absolute noise and vibration level by inputting a given exciting force into the model. These methods were applied to the development of the new engine. As a result, the characteristics of an aluminum cylinder block were used effectively to achieve a new lightweight V6 engine with low noise and vibration levels.

Development of a Method for Predicting Comfortable Airflow in the Passenger Compartment

Indexes of thermal comfort, such as PMV (Predicted Mean Vote: ISO-7730), which have traditionally been applied to houses or buildings, are difficult to be applied to the automotive passenger compartment because of the large thermal differences that exist around vehicle occupants. In this work, the effects of temperature, airflow and solar radiation on passenger comfort in an air-conditioned vehicle interior were analyzed. Based on the results obtained, a method was devised for predicting the feeling of comfort passengers get from the thermal atmosphere in the vehicle interior. This paper explains the necessity of providing a diffused airflow in an air-conditioned passenger compartment, based on the effects of airflow on the feeling of comfort. Further, a new airflow control procedure is proposed which combines both diffused and concentrated airflow patterns to create a new variable airflow system.

Development of a Practical DSP Car Audio System

Digital signal processors (DSPs) are being used widely for sound field reproduction. However, it is difficult to apply a DSP to a car audio system because of the complicated acoustic characteristics of the passenger compartment. The authors have developed a new car audio system which employs special DSP software and a new speaker layout to provide excellent presence. The DSP has five output channels to generate stereophonic reflection from the front and rear speakers. The DSP software is programmed for each individual car model. A center speaker and A-pillar tweeters are used to produce a natural sound field in front through effective utilization of reflection from the windshield. This system is featured in 1992 Nissan models.

We have developed a vibration damping technique for the Oil Pan to reduce radiation noise. This technique makes use of oil viscosity. To increase vibration damping of oil pan, we use oil viscosity by forming a thin oil film between the oil pan bottom and an added inner plate. This paper presents the results of vibration tests that were conducted to study the oil damping mechanism and results of applying to a small high-speed diesel engine.

This paper describes the development of the drive motor adopted on the newly developed 2013 Model Year (MY) electric vehicle (EV). Based on the 2011MY EV that was specifically designed and engineered for mass-production, the 2013MY powertrain integrates the electric motor, inverter and charging system into one unit in order to achieve downsizing and weight saving, unlike previous 2011 model which had these components segregated. In general, integration of all components into one unit causes deterioration of the noise and vibration performance of vehicles due to an increase in weight and the number of resonance parts. In order to overcome such problems associated with this integration, each component in the 2013 model has been optimized to reduce noise and vibration resulting in high degree of vehicle quietness.

Development of an Engine Mount Optimization Method Using Modal Parameters

The purpose of this study was to develop a simple optimization method for use in designing vibration insulators. With this method, stiffness, location and inclination of each insulator are used as design parameters. A performance index consisting of vehicle modal parameters expressed as eigenvalues and eigenvectors has been constructed to evaluate low-frequency idle/shake performance and higher frequency vibration performance involving road/engine inputs. Using this performance index and the sensitivity of the modal parameters, a designer can easily find a suitable direction for optimizing mount performance and thereby obtain a stable solution. The new method was employed to optimize an engine mount system. Experimental data obtained on the system validated the accuracy of the calculated results and showed an improvement in idle/shake performance. This method is a useful tool in designing optimum vibration insulators.

This paper describes an experimental modal synthesis method for determining the noise characteristics of coupled acoustic-structural systems. This method was developed to provide an essential tool for analyzing passenger compartment noise levels. With this method, it is possible to obtain the coupled acoustic-structural parameters directly from experimental measurements of noise and vibration. The resulting modal parameters provide the basis for predicting how structural modifications will affect interior noise characteristics. This paper presents the theory on which the method is based and gives examples of its application to passenger compartment noise analyses.

Dynamic-Shock-Absorber-Effect of Engine Mounting System on the Power-Train Vibration

In this paper, a method which uses the engine mounting system to suppress vibration in the power train is examined. The vibration in the power train can be reduced by tuning the engine mounting system. It has been seen through the results of this analysis that vibration can be reduced by an effect, different from dynamic damper effect, which is known in this paper as the “dynamic shock absorber effect”. Comparing it with the dynamic damper effect, this paper explains the dynamic shock absorber and gives examples of its application in enhancing driveability and reducing clutch judder vibration.

Effects of Power Plant Vibration on Sound Quality in the Passenger Compartment During Acceleration

The relationship between the spectrum structures of passenger compartment noise and the results of subjective evaluations of sound quality-has been studied on a fron-wheel-drive car with a four cylinder engine. As a result of an analysis using a car interior noise simulator, which is a kind of digital sound shynthesizer, most of the sound quality indicies such as the crank rumble noise, the roughness or unstable characteristics, and the muddiness were found to be related to the structure of engine revolution harmonics and to the strength of fourmants. Further, the physical mechanisms which characterize these spectrum structures were identified through both engine running tests and shaker tests. As a results, the dominant factors governing sound quality problems were found to be the crankshaft bending or torsional vibration coupled with the total power plant vibration shystem.

Evaluation of Equivalent Temperature Using Thermal Factors : Validation of a Calculation Method Based on ISO 14505-4:2021 in a Vehicle Cabin

This paper describes a method for evaluating the equivalent temperature in vehicle cabins based on the new international standard ISO 14505-4, published in 2021. ISO 14505-4 defines two simulation methods to determine a thermal comfort index “equivalent temperature.” One method uses a numerical thermal manikin, and the other uses thermal factors to calculate. This study discusses the latter method to validate its accuracy, identify the key points to consider, and examine its advantages and disadvantages. First, the definition of equivalent temperature and the equation to calculate the equivalent temperature using thermal factors, such as air temperature, radiant temperature, solar radiation, and air velocity, are explained. In addition, the experiments and simulation methods are described.

This paper describes the equivalent temperature based on the mesh-free simulation proposed by the previous papers (Part1 and Part2) under the transient heating condition in a 3D-CAD vehicle cabin including the thermal manikin which takes into account the clothing shape. For this purpose, firstly, the experiments of vehicle cabin measuring for the thermal environment including the equivalent temperature are carried out under the transient heating condition. Then, the calculated results of the thermal environment in the vehicle cabin are compared with time series experimental data under the transient condition. They correspond to the experiments including transient changes well. The transient calculated equivalent temperature of thermal manikin is also compared with experiments. As a result, since it is difficult to control the thermal manikin ideally in the experiment, it is difficult to compare the transient behavior.

The present paper is Part 1 of two consecutive studies. Part 1 describes three subjects: definition of the equivalent temperature (teq), measurements of teq using a clothed thermal manikin in a vehicle cabin, and modeling of the clothed thermal manikin for teq simulation. After defining teq, a method for measuring teq with a clothed thermal manikin was examined. Two techniques were proposed in this study: the definition of “the total heat transfer coefficient between the skin surface and the environment in a standard environment (hcal)” based on the thermal insulation of clothing (Icl), and a method of measuring Icl in consideration of the area factor (fcl), which indicates the ratio of the clothing surface to the manikin surface area. Then, teq was measured in an actual vehicle cabin by the proposed method under two conditions: a summer cooling condition with solar radiation and a winter heating condition without solar radiation.
