A Flexible Reference Model for the Test System Development

In this article, a reference model of the motor vehicle will be introduced with which new test systems for the increasing electronics proportion can be developed and validated simultaneously without having a preproduction vehicle available. The basic idea is to simulate the vehicle not yet in existence on the interface to the electronic systems in real time. The hybrid model of the motor vehicle developed in this way has reference character for the test system development.

In forefront, endeavours are aimed at the improvements of the functions of the system in regard to driving safety, as well as driver stress relief at lowest possible costs, in order to increase the total cost effectiveness of commercial vehicles. Starting with currently implemented electronic systems up to systems now under development, a continuous development of standalone electronics up to integrated electronic compounding is the current trend. This trend shows advantages of reduced wiring and the number of sensors while it increases the function at the same time.

The rapidly growing amount of software in cars reshapes the automotive industry. In this paper we identify the main pain points regarding software in the manufacturing process by performing a structured analysis on the experiences made at a major car manufacturer over last two years. Consequently, the paper analyses the possible approaches to address the challenges.

Analysis of Intelligent Suspension Systems for Commercial Vehicles

Economical and technical aspects justify intelligent suspension systems in commercial vehicles. The tasks of suspensions of vehicles are contradictionary and the prevailing problems cannot be readily solved with conventional suspension systems in a satisfying manner. However, advantages are acquired by the use of adaptive suspension systems. Varying the properties and characteristics of suspension systems in respect to the different loads transported by a commercial vehicle, to vehicle speeds and to dynamic maneuvers, nearly present as good results as closed loop controlled adaptive suspension systems do. For economical reasons fully active suspension systems are only installed in commercial vehicles performing special tasks and services. Partially active suspension systems reduce power consumption and demonstrate satisfactory efficiency.

The electric range of plug-in hybrids as well as the installed electric power has steadily increased. With an electric power share of more than half of the overall system power, concepts of hybrid electric vehicles with at least two electric machines come into focus. Especially the concept of adding an individual electric axle to a state-of-the-art parallel hybrid, such as a P2-hybrid, is promising. However, the system complexity of a so-called P24-hybird increases significantly because the number of possible system states rises. This leads to an increased development and calibration effort for an online energy management. Especially a transfer from an optimized operating strategy to a rule-based energy management is challenging. Thus, a development framework for the calibration of an online energy management system (EMS) which is as fuel efficient as possible is needed.

The automotive industry changes rapidly. New players, concepts, and technologies from the Information Technology (IT) domain enter the market and software receives a high priority. Inside the vehicle, the number of components, which consist mostly of software, are increasing and more and more software-based functions are offered. In addition, High Performance Computers (HPCs) are continuing to be integrated into vehicles. These aspects lead to several challenges with current vehicle diagnostics, but also enable new opportunities in that field. However, in the specific area of vehicle diagnostics, there exists only very limited literature that considers current challenges and new possibilities for future vehicle diagnostics. Some literature deals with the general automotive system design or shows results from about five years ago. The viewpoints of an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) are not included there.

Comprehensive Evaluation of Logging Frameworks for Future Vehicle Diagnostics

More and more applications (apps) are entering vehicles. Customers would like to have in-car apps in their infotainment system, which they already use regularly on their smartphones. Other apps with new functionalities also inspire vehicle customers, but only as long as the customer can utilize them. To ensure customer satisfaction, it is important that these apps work and that failures are found and corrected as quickly as possible. Therefore, in-car apps also implicate requirements for future vehicle diagnostics. This is because current vehicle diagnostic methods are not designed for handling dynamic software failures of apps. Consequently, new diagnostic methods are needed to support the diagnosis of in-car apps. Log data are a central building block in software systems for system health management or troubleshooting. However, there are different types of log data and log environment setups depending on the underlying system or software platform.

Digital Methodology for Simulating Autonomous Vehicle Sensor Cleaning

The automotive world is progressing fast towards autonomous vehicles making sensors one of the critical components. There is a requirement for constant exchange of information between the vehicle and its surrounding environment, which is assisted by sensors such as Camera, LiDAR, and RADAR. However, exposure to harsh environmental conditions such as rain, dirt, snow, and bird droppings can hamper the functioning of the sensors and in turn interrupt accurate vehicle maneuvers. Sensor-cleaning mechanisms are required to be tested under various weather conditions and vehicle operating situations. Besides wind tunnel tests, digitalizing this whole process becomes important to take decision on design changes in early vehicle development stage. This work presents a digital methodology to test the LiDAR cleaning system in the advent of mud clearing at different vehicle speeds. The cleaning mechanism consists of a telescopic nozzle placed above the LiDAR translating back and forth.

Driving Performance of a Commercial Vehicle With Adaptive Suspensions

The settings of adaptive suspension elements may be switched from a comfortable “soft” characteristic to a safe and “firm” characteristic. Thus the possibility is given to not only improve the ride comfort, but the dynamic driving behavior as well, since no compromise must be made between these two criteria when tuning the suspensions. Such systems seem to be very promising for commercial vehicles, as - because of their changing loading conditions - it is very difficult to design an optimal suspension system using conventional springs and dampers. This paper describes the influence of shock absorbers and air springs with variable characteristics on the ride comfort and the dynamic behavior of a 15-t-truck by investigations done with a simulation system. A series production vehicle without adaptive suspension elements serves as basis. At first the results of measurements and simulations are compared and show a very good concurrence.

Optimization-Based Battery Thermal Management for Improved Regenerative Braking in CEP Vehicles

The courier express parcel service industry (CEP industry) has experienced significant changes in the recent years due to increasing parcel volume. At the same time, the electrification of the vehicle fleets poses additional challenges. A major advantage of battery electric CEP vehicles compared to internal combustion engine vehicles is the ability to regenerate the kinetic energy of the vehicle in the frequent deceleration phases during parcel delivery. If the battery is cold the maximum recuperation power of the powertrain is limited by a reduced chemical reaction rate inside the battery. In general, the maximum charging power of the battery depends on the state of charge and the battery temperature. Due to the low power demand for driving during CEP operation, the battery self-heating is comparably low under cold ambient conditions. Without active conditioning of the battery, potential regenerative energy is lost as a result of the cold battery.

The simulation of the driving performance of motor vehicles offers the possibility of analyzing the behavior of new commercial vehicles or new systems to be integrated into the vehicle, already before the stage of the first prototypes. Thus, simulation technology may contribute to shorten the time and costs needed for the development of new vehicles and new vehicle systems. As an example, this contribution describes the simulation of a commercial vehicle with adaptive suspension elements. The simulations were used to coarse-tune the suspension elements before installation and fine-tuning them in a prototype vehicle, and to define and optimize the control strategies of electronically controlled suspension systems. A comparison between the costs of the simulation and estimated costs of corresponding field tests substantiates the economical benefits of the simulation.

Secondary Air Injection with a New Developed Electrical Blower for Reduced Exhaust Emissions

Secondary air injection after cold start gives two effects for reduced exhaust emissions: An exothermic reaction at the hot exhaust valves occurs, which increases the temperature of the exhaust gas. It gives sufficient air to the catalyst during the cold start fuel enrichment that is necessary to prevent driveability problems. Handicaps for the wide use of air injection include space constraints, weight and price. An electrical air blower was choosen to best satisfy all these requirements. The development steps are described. The result is a three stage radialblower with extremly high revolutions of about 18000 rpm. The system configuration and the outcome are demonstrated on the new C-Class of Mercedes-Benz. The results show emission reductions higher than 50 %, while also satisfying the development goals of noise, volume, weight and cost requirements.

Temperature Compensation with Thermovariable Rate Springs in Automatic Transmissions

The shifting comfort of automatic transmissions of diesel engines at low temperatures can be substantially improved by using springs with temperature dependent rates in the control valves. These springs utilize the shape memory effect of Ni-Ti alloys. They provide a simple and economic way to control both shifting pressure and shifting time. The Mercedes- Benz automatic transmission uses two different springs with thermovariable rate (TVR) in the shifting pressure system to adapt the pressure in the switching elements to the lower torque of cold diesel engines. One spring is used in the shifting pressure control valve and one in the accumulator system.

During the most recent past, contributions to anti-lock systems have been continuously published reflecting on the multi-functional significance of these systems only in a limited way. It seems essential therefore, to compare the primary criteria of functionality to the costs precisely. The technical solutions carried into effect during the past and the present orientated towards variously different criteria of optimization. The paper illustrates the particularities of the different control systems, like 2-, 4-and 6-channel systems with Individual Control, Select-Low Control or Modified Individual Control. The impact of the various ABS-philosophies on the directional control of heavy commercial vehicles will be analyzed, using driving maneuvers like “straight-ahead braking” or “braking in a turn” on homogeneous and split adhesion road surfaces.

The Mercedes-Benz 5-Speed Automatic Transmission Targets and Comparison of Concepts

Since the introduction of the 4-speed automatic transmissions W4A040 in 1979 and W4A020 in 1981, more than 50% of Mercedes-Benz cars have been equipped with automatic transmissions. These transmissions have undergone continuous development since their introduction. Due to engine/transmission management, the kick-down shift points are electronically influenced, the shift comfort is improved partially by ignition timing manipulation. During the warm-up phase the shift points are raised via output signals from the electronic engine system to improve exhaust gas emissions. In this paper considerations are explained which resulted in supplementing the proven four-speed transmission with a five-speed transmission.

The Raisable Roll-Over Bar of the New Mercedes-Benz Roadster

The new SL from Mercedes-Benz was conceived as a pure-bred roadster, i.e. without a fixed roll-over bar which would mar the looks of this open sports car and moreover emphasize the added risk of injury in the event of a roll-over accident. At the same time, the aim was to further enhance occupant safety in the event of such a roll-over. These aims led to the designing of a completely new kind of passive protection system which comes into operation automatically if a roll-over is imminent. Between the rear seats and the soft-top recess, a roll-over bar was therefore integrated; this is mounted on a pivot system and does not affect the apearance of the car when lowered. A sensor system, which is also new, registers driving situations which could result in a roll-over. As a consequence of this, the roll-over bar is raised via a spring/damper mechanism and locked into position.

Computational models directly derived from data gained increased interest in recent years. Data-driven approaches have brought breakthroughs in different research areas such as image-, video- and audio-processing. Often denoted as Machine Learning (ML), today these approaches are not widely applied in the field of vehicle Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH). Works combining ML and NVH mainly discuss the topic with respect to psychoacoustics, traffic noise, structural health monitoring and as improvement to existing numerical simulation methods. Vehicle interior noise is a major quality criterion for today’s automotive customers. To estimate noise levels early in the development process, deterministic system descriptions are created by utilizing time-consuming measurement techniques. This paper examines whether pattern-recognizing algorithms are suitable to conduct the prediction process for a steering system.

Time-Resolved Measurement of Individual Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Automotive Exhaust at Transient Engine Operation

A new multicomponent exhaust gas analyzer has been applied to investigate the time-resolved concentrations of the aromatic hydrocarbon exhaust components benzene, toluene, xylene, trimethyl benzene under dynamic engine operation, such as sudden change of speed and load, misfiring and switching off the fuel mixture control. The analyzer consisting of a compact laser mass spectrometer is capable of measuring the concentrations of the individual aromatic hydrocarbon compounds simultaneously with 1 ppm sensitivity at a sampling rate of 50 Hz corresponding to a sampling period of 20 ms. High concentration peaks are observed for these substances at instationary motor operation. However, whereas the real-time concentrations of toluene, xylene, and trimethyl benzene show equal dependence on motor speed and load a different behavior has been observed for benzene even during the emission phase of single combustion cycles.
