Analysis of RF Corona Ignition in Lean Operating Conditions Using an Optical Access Engine

Radio Frequency Corona ignition systems represent an interesting solution among innovative ignition strategies for their ability to stabilize the combustion and to extend the engine operating range. The corona discharge, generated by a strong electric field at a frequency of about 1 MHz, produces the ignition of the air-fuel mixture in multiple spots, characterized by a large volume when compared to a conventional spark, increasing the early flame growth speed. The transient plasma generated by the discharge, by means of thermal, kinetic and transport effects, allows a robust initialization of the combustion even in critical conditions, such as using diluted or lean mixtures. In this work the effects of Corona ignition have been analyzed on a single cylinder optical engine fueled with gasoline, comparing the results with those of a traditional single spark ignition.

Combustion Behavior of an RF Corona Ignition System with Different Control Strategies

It has been proved that Radio Frequency Corona, among other innovative ignition systems, is able to stabilize combustion and to extend the engine operating range in lean conditions, with respect to conventional spark igniters. This paper reports on a sensitivity analysis on the combustion behavior for different values of Corona electric control parameters (supply voltage and discharge duration). Combustion analysis has been carried out on a single cylinder PFI gasoline-fueled optical engine, by means of both indicating measurements and imaging. A high-speed camera has been used to record the natural luminosity of premixed flames and the obtained images have been synchronized with corresponding indicating acquisition data. Imaging tools allowed to observe and measure the early flame development, providing information which are not obtainable by a pressure-based indicating system.

Development of Multiple Injection Strategy for Gasoline Compression Ignition High Performance and Low Emissions in a Light Duty Engine

The increase in regulatory demand to reduce CO2 emissions resulted in a focus on the development of novel combustion modes such as gasoline compression ignition (GCI). It has been shown by others that GCI can improve the overall engine efficiency while achieving soot and NOx emissions targets. In comparison with diesel fuel, gasoline has a higher volatility and has more resistance to autoignition, therefore, it has a longer ignition delay time which facilitates better mixing of the air-fuel charge before ignition. In this study, a GCI combustion system has been tested using a 2.2L compression ignition engine as part of a US Department of Energy funded project. For this purpose, a multiple injection strategy was developed to improve the pressure rise rates and soot emission levels for the same engine out NOx emissions.

Direct Visualization of Combustion in an E85-Fueled DISI Engine under Various Operation Conditions

Gasoline-direct-injection (GDI) engines have been adopted increasingly by the automotive industry in the recent years due to their performance, effects on the environment, and customers' demand on advanced technology. However, the knowledge of detailed combustion process in such engines is still not thoroughly analyzed and understood. With optically accessible engines (OAE) and advanced measuring techniques, such as high-speed digital imaging, the in-cylinder combustion process is made available directly to researchers. The present study primarily focuses on the effects of different parameters of engine control on the combustion process, such as fuel types, valve deactivation, ignition timing, spark energy, injection timing, air-fuel ratio, and exhaust gas recirculation. Three engine heads of a 2.0L GDI engine are used with modification to acquire different optical access.

Engine Efficiency Measurements Using a 100 kHz Radio Frequency Corona Igniter

Conventional spark-ignition engines are currently incapable of meeting rising customer performance demands while complying with even stringent pollutant-emissions regulations. As a result, innovative ignition systems are being developed to accomplish these targets. Radio-Frequency corona igniters stand out for their ability to accelerate early flame growth speed by exploiting the combined action of kinetic, thermal and transport effects. Furthermore, a volumetric discharge enables the promotion of combustion over a wide area, as opposed to the local ignition of traditional spark. The present work wants to evaluate the advantages of a Streamer-type Radio Frequency corona discharge at about 100 kHz with respect to those of traditional spark igniter.

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of the Flow Field Effect on Arc Stretching for a J-type Spark Plug

Nowadays internal combustion engines can operate under lean combustion conditions to maximize efficiency, as long as combustion stability is guaranteed. The robustness of combustion initiation is one of the main issues of actual spark-ignition engines, especially at high level of excess-air or dilution. The enhancement of the in-cylinder global motion and local turbulence is an effective way to increase the flame velocity. During the ignition process, the excessive charge motion can hinder the spark discharge and eventually cause a misfire. In this perspective, the interaction between the igniter and the flow field is a fundamental aspect which still needs to be explored in more detail to understand how the combustion originates and develops. In this work, a combined experimental and numerical study is carried out to investigate the flow field around the spark gap, and its effect on the spark discharge evolution.

Identification of Low-Frequency/Low SNR Automobile Noise Sources

This paper presents experimental investigations of determining and analyzing low-frequency, low-SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) noise sources of an automobile by using a new technology known as Sound Viewer. Such a task is typically very difficult to do especially at low or even negative SNR. The underlying principles behind the Sound Viewer technology consists of a passive SODAR (Sonic Detection And Ranging) and HELS (Helmholtz Equation Least Squares) method. The former enables one to determine the precise locations of multiple sound sources in 3D space simultaneously over the entire frequency range consistent with a measurement microphone in non-ideal environment, where there are random background noise and unknown interfering signals. The latter enables one to reconstruct all acoustic quantities such as the acoustic pressure, acoustic intensity, time-averaged acoustic power, radiation patterns, etc.

Impact of A/F Ratio on Ion Current Features Using Spark Plug with Negative Polarity

The increasing interest and requirement for improved electronic engine control during the last few decades, has led to the implementation of several different sensor technologies. The process of utilizing the spark plug as a combustion probe to monitor the different combustion related parameters such as knock, misfire, Ignition timing, and air-fuel ratio have been the subject of research for some time now. The air-fuel ratio is one of the most important engine operating parameters that has an impact on the combustion process, engine-out emissions, fuel economy, indicated mean effective pressure and exhaust gas composition and temperature. Furthermore, air-fuel ratio affects the ion produced during flame kernel initiation and post flame propagation. In this paper, an investigation is made to determine the effect of air-fuel ratio on ion current, using gasoline and methane under different spark plug designs and engine operating conditions.

Ion Current in a Spark Ignition Engine using Negative Polarity on Center Electrode

Most of the previous research on flame ionization in spark ignition engines applied positive polarity on the spark plug center electrode, referred to as positively biased probe. In this paper an investigation is made to determine the characteristics of the ion current signal with negatively biased probe. The factors that contribute to the second ion current peak, reported to be missing with negative polarity, are investigated. Experiments were conducted on a research single-cylinder, spark ignition engine and the negative polarity is applied by a SmartFire Plasma Ignition system. The effect of different spark plug designs and engine operating parameters on the amplitude and timing of each of the two ion current peaks is determined. The results indicated that, with negative polarity, the cathode area is one of the main factors that contribute to the amplitude of the ion current signal, particularly the second peak.

Lean Combustion Analysis of a Plasma-Assisted Ignition System in a Single Cylinder Engine fueled with E85

Engine research community is developing innovative strategies capable of reducing fuel consumption and pollutant emissions while ensuring, at the same time, satisfactory performances. Spark ignition engines operation with highly diluted or lean mixture is demonstrated to be beneficial for engine efficiency and emissions while arduous for combustion initiation and stability. Traditional igniters are unsuitable for such working conditions, therefore, advanced ignition systems have been developed to improve combustion robustness. To overcome the inherent efficiency limit of combustion engines, the usage of renewable fuels is largely studied and employed to offer a carbon neutral transition to a cleaner future. For such a reason, both innovative ignition systems and bio or E-fuels are currently being investigated as alternatives to the previous approaches. Numerical Simulation of Autoignition of Gasoline-Ethanol/Air Mixtures under Different Conditions of Pressure, Temperature, Dilution, and Equivalence Ratio.

A numerical simulation of autoignition of gasoline-ethanol/air mixtures has been performed using the closed homogeneous reactor model in CHEMKIN® to compute the dependence of autoignition time with ethanol concentration, pressure, temperature, dilution, and equivalence ratio. A semi-detailed validated chemical kinetic model with 142 species and 672 reactions for a gasoline surrogate fuel with ethanol has been used. The pure components in the surrogate fuel consisted of n-heptane, isooctane and toluene. The ethanol volume fraction is varied between 0 to 85%, initial pressure is varied between 20 to 60 bar, initial temperature is varied between 800 to 1200K, and the dilution is varied between 0 to 32% at equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 to represent the in-cylinder conditions of a spark-ignition engine. The ignition time is taken to be the point where the rate of change of temperature with respect to time is the largest (temperature inflection point criteria).

Currently, conventional spark-ignition engines are unfit to satisfy the growing customer requirements on efficiency while complying with the legislations on pollutant emissions. New ignition systems are being developed to extend the engine stable operating range towards increasing lean conditions. Among these, the Radio-Frequency corona igniters represent an interesting solution for the capability to promote the combustion in a much wider region than the one involved by the traditional spark channel. Moreover, the flame kernel development is enhanced by means of the production of non-thermal plasma, where low-temperature active radicals are ignition promoters. However, at low pressure and at high voltage the low temperature plasma benefits can be lost due to occurrences of spark-like events. Recently, RF barrier discharge igniters (BDI) have been investigated for the ability to prevent the arc formation thanks to a strong-breakdown resistance.

Optical Investigations on a Multiple Spark Ignition System for Lean Engine Operation

The paper reports on the optical investigation of a multiple spark ignition system carried out in a closed vessel in inert gas, and in an optical access engine in firing condition. The ignition system features a plug-top ignition coil with integrated electronics which is capable of multi-spark discharges (MSD) with short dwell time. First, the ignition system has been characterized in constant ambient conditions, at different pressure levels. The profile of the energy released by the spark and the cumulated value has been determined by measuring the fundamental electrical parameters. A high speed camera has been used to visualize the time evolution of the electric arc discharge to highlight its shape and position variability. The multiple spark system has then been mounted on an optical access engine with port fuel injection (PFI) to study the combustion characteristics in lean conditions with single and multiple discharges.

Performance Analysis and Valve Event Optimization for SI Engines Using Fractal Combustion Model

On the basis of the newly-developed fractal combustion model, the engine-thermodynamic-cycle simulations were conducted with the 1D engine-cycle-simulation program AVL-BOOST for a passenger-car SI engine with a fully-variable valve train. Results of the simulations showed a good agreement with measurements for both full and part load at various engine speeds. On the basis of the thermodynamic model for the engine, the valve event optimization was carried out for both full and part load with a partial factorial DoE plan consisting of various valve event durations and timings. For each of the selected cases, an independent optimization for the ignition timing was performed to determine the minimum BSFC under a constraint on specified knock criteria. Satisfactory results for the valve event optimization were achieved.

Smart Spark Plug for Proper Combustion Timing in Gasoline Engines and Detection of Misfire and Knock

Internal combustion engines are required to achieve production goals of better fuel economy, improved fuel economy and reduced emissions in order to meet the current and future stringent standards. To achieve these goals, it is essential to control the combustion process using an in-cylinder combustion sensor and a system that produces a feedback signal to the ECU. This paper presents a system based on combustion ionization that includes a newly developed smart spark plug capable of sensing the whole combustion process. A unique feature of the smart spark plug system is its ability to sense the early stages of combustion and produce a complete ion current signal that accurately identifies and can be used for the control of the start of combustion.
