A Commercial Excavator: Analysis, Modelling and Simulation of the Hydraulic Circuit

The paper addresses some aspects of an ongoing research on a commercial compact excavator. The interest is focused on the analysis and modelling of the whole hydraulic circuit that, beside a load sensing variable displacement pump, features a stack of nine proportional directional control valves modules of which seven are of the load sensing type. Loads being sensed are the boom swing, boom, stick and bucket, right and left track motors and work tools; instead, the blade and the turret swing users do not contribute to the load sensing signal. Of specific interest are the peculiarities that were observed in the stack. In fact, to develop an accurate AMESim modelling, the stack was dismantled and all modules analysed and represented in a CAD environment as 3D parts. The load sensing flow generation unit was replaced on the vehicle by another one whose analysis and modelling have been developed using available design and experimental data.

A Methodology for Modeling the Cat-Heating Transient Phase in a Turbocharged Direct Injection Spark Ignition Engine

This paper presents the modeling of the transient phase of catalyst heating on a high-performance turbocharged spark ignition engine with the aim to accurately predict the exhaust thermal energy available at the catalyst inlet and to provide a “virtual test rig” to assess different design and calibration options. The entire transient phase, starting from the engine cranking until the catalyst warm-up is completed, was taken into account in the simulation, and the model was validated using a wide data-set of experimental tests. The first step of the modeling activity was the combustion analysis during the transient phase: the burn rate was evaluated on the basis of experimental in-cylinder pressure data, considering both cycle-to-cycle and cylinder-to-cylinder variations.

A Methodology to Investigate the Dynamic Characteristics of ESP and EHB Hydraulic Units

The paper deals with the Hardware-In-the-Loop based methodology which was adopted to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Electro-Hydraulic Brake (EHB) components. Firstly, it permits the identification of the time delays due to the hardware of the actuation system. Secondly, the link between the hardware of the hydraulic unit and a vehicle model running in real time permits the objective evaluation of the performance induced by the single components of different hydraulic units in terms of vehicle dynamics. The paper suggests the main parameters and tests which can help the car manufacturer in evaluating ESP hydraulic units, without expensive road tests.

A Methodology to Mimic Cycle to Cycle Variations and to Predict Knock Occurrence through Numerical Simulation

In this paper a novel approach to mimic through numerical simulation Cycle-to-Cycle Variations (CCV) of the combustion process of Spark Ignition (SI) engines is described. The proposed methodology allows to reproduce the variability in combustion which is responsible for knock occurrence and thus to replicate the stochastic behavior of this abnormal combustion phenomenon. On the basis of the analysis of a comprehensive database of experimental data collected on a typical European downsized and turbocharged SI engine, the proposed approach was demonstrated to be capable to replicate in the simulation process the same percentage of knocking cycles experimentally measured in light-knock conditions, after a proper calibration of the Kinetics-Fit (KF), a new phenomenological knock model which was recently developed by Gamma Technologies.

A Numerical Model for the Virtual Calibration of a Highly Efficient Spark Ignition Engine

Nowadays numerical simulations play a major role in the development of future sustainable powertrain thanks to their capability of investigating a wide spectrum of innovative technologies with times and costs significantly lower than a campaign of experimental tests. In such a framework, this paper aims to assess the predictive capabilities of an 1D-CFD engine model developed to support the design and the calibration of the innovative highly efficient spark ignition engine of the PHOENICE (PHev towards zerO EmissioNs & ultimate ICE efficiency) EU H2020 project. As a matter of fact, the availability of a reliable simulation platform is crucial to achieve the project target of 47% peak indicating efficiency, by synergistically exploiting the combination of innovative in-cylinder charge motion, Miller cycle with high compression ratio, lean mixture with cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and electrified turbocharger.

A Possible Adaptive Wing Apparatus for New UAV Configurations

The problem of wing shape modification under loads in order to enhance the aircraft performance and control is continuously improving by researchers. This requirement is in contrast to the airworthiness regulations that constraint stiffness and stress of the structure in order to maintain structural integrity under operative flight conditions. The lifting surface modification is more stringent in those cases, such as UAV configurations, where the installed power is limited but the variety of operative scenario is wider than in conventional aircraft. A possible solution for adaptive wing configuration can be found in the VENTURAS Project idea. The VENTURAS Project is a funded project with the aim of improve the wind turbine efficiency by means of introducing a twisting capability for the blade sections according to the best situation in any wind condition. The blade structure is composed by two parts: 1) internal supporting element, 2) external deformable envelope.

A Reduced Order Model for the Aeroelastic Analysis of Flexible Wings

The aeroelastic design of highly flexible wings, made of extremely light structures yet still capable of carrying a considerable amount of non-structural weights, requires significant effort. The complexity involved in such design demands for simplified mathematical tools based on appropriate reduced order models capable of predicting the accurate aeroelastic behaviour. The model presented in this paper is based on a consistent nonlinear beam model, capable of simulating the unconventional aeroelastic behaviour of flexible composite wings. The partial differential equations describing the wing dynamics are reduced to a dimensionless form in terms of three ordinary differential equations using a discretization technique, along with Galerkin's method. Within this approach the nonlinear structural model an unsteady indicial based aerodynamic model with dynamic stall are coupled.

Aeroelastic Behaviour of Flexible Wings Carrying Distributed Electric Propulsion Systems

An accurate aeroelastic assessment of powered HALE aircraft is of paramount importance considering that their behaviour contrasts the one of conventional aircraft mainly due to the use of high aspect-ratio wings with distributed propulsion systems. This particular configuration shows strong dependency of the wing natural frequencies to the propulsion distribution and operating conditions. Numerical and experimental investigations are carried out to better understand the behaviour of flexible wings, focusing on the effect of distributed electric propulsion systems. Several configurations are investigated, including a single propulsion system using an engine pod (a weight with embedded electric motor, a propeller, and the wing-attached structure) installed at selected spanwise positions, and configurations with two and three propellers.

An Objective Evaluation of the Comfort During the Gear Change Process

This paper presents the methodology adopted by Politecnico di Torino Vehicle Dynamics Research Team to obtain objective indices for the evaluation of the comfort during the gear change process. Some test drivers and different passengers traveled on a test vehicle and assigned marks on the basis of their subjective feeling of comfort during the gearshifts. The comparison between the most significant subjective evaluations and the experimental values obtained by the instruments located on the vehicle is presented. As a consequence, some indices (based on physical parameters) to evaluate the efficiency and the comfort of the gearshift process are obtained. They are in good agreement with the subjective evaluations of the drivers and the passengers. The second part of the paper presents a driveline and vehicle model which was conceived to reproduce the phenomena experimented on the vehicle. The experimental validation of the model is presented.

Assessment of Flow Noise Mitigation Potential of a Complex Aftertreatment System through a Hybrid Computational Aeroacoustics Methodology

Flow noise produced by the turbulent motion of the exhaust gases is one of the main contributions to the noise generation for a heavy-duty vehicle. The exhaust system has therefore to be optimized since the early stages of the design to improve the engine’s Noise Vibration Harshness (NVH) performance and to comply with legislation noise limits. In this context, the availability of reliable Computational Aero-Acoustics (CAA) methodologies is crucial to assess the noise mitigation potential of different exhaust system designs. In the present work, a characterization of the sound generation in a heavy-duty exhaust system was carried out evaluating the noise attenuation potential of a design modification, by means of a hybrid CAA methodology.

Assessment of the Predictive Capabilities of a Combustion Model for a Modern Downsized Turbocharged SI Engine

A 0D phenomenological turbulence model, based on the K-k and k- ɛ approaches, was coupled with a predictive turbulent combustion model using the commercial code GT-Suite, and its predictive capabilities were assessed for a downsized turbocharged SI engine. Differently from the 3D-CFD approach which is typically utilized to describe the evolution of the in-cylinder flow field, and which has very high computational requirements, the 0D phenomenological approach adopted in this work gives the opportunity to predict the evolution of the in-cylinder charge motion and the subsequent combustion process by means of a turbulent combustion model, with a significantly reduced computational effort, thus paving the way for the simulation of the whole engine operating map.

Base Model Simulator (BMS) - A Vehicle Dynamics Model to Evaluate Chassis Control Systems Performance

Chassis Control Systems development methodology is nowadays strongly based on analyzing performance by using PC vehicle dynamics simulation. Generally, the overall design, test bench and road validation process is continuously accompanied by simulation. The Base Model Simulator was developed by the Vehicle Dynamics Group at the Department of Mechanics of Politecnico di Torino both to satisfy this requirement and for educational purposes. It considers a complete vehicle dynamics mathematical model, including driver, powertrain, driveline, vehicle body, suspensions, steering system, brakes, tires. The Base Model Simulator takes in account the suspensions system elastokinematics, including, for example, automatic computation of camber variation during the vehicle roll motions. Tire model considered are either Pacejka's models or experimental data.

Battery Electric Vehicle Control Strategy for String Stability Based on Deep Reinforcement Learning in V2V Driving

This works presents a Reinforcement Learning (RL) agent to implement a Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) system that simultaneously enhances energy efficiency and comfort, while also ensuring string stability. CACC systems are a new generation of ACC which systems rely on the communication of the so-called ego-vehicle with other vehicles and infrastructure using V2V and/or V2X connectivity. This enables the availability of robust information about the environment thanks to the exchange of information, rather than their estimation or enabling some redundancy of data. CACC systems have the potential to overcome one typical issue that arises with regular ACC, that is the lack of string stability. String stability is the ability of the ACC of a vehicle to avoid unnecessary fluctuations in speed that can cause traffic jams, dampening these oscillations along the vehicle string rather than amplifying them.

Combustion Phasing Indicators for Optimized Spark Timing Settings for Methane-Hydrogen Powered Small Size Engines

In the intermediate stage towards zero-emissions, use of methane-hydrogen blends in spark ignition (SI) engines could represent an attractive application. The present work investigated the relevance of empirical base rules for choosing maximum brake torque spark timing settings when using methane-hydrogen blends. A 0D/1D model was used for investigating the optimized ignition for maximizing engine output. Calibration was performed by using in-cylinder pressure data recorded on a methane fueled small size SI engine for two-wheel applications. After adaptations of the model such as valves timing, for rendering it more representative for power generation applications, the investigation was focused on how MBT spark advance was correlated to the 50% mass fraction burned mark (CA50) and peak pressure location. The fact that they were optimized for methane was found to be essential only for high concentrations of hydrogen.

Common Feeding Injection System Equipped with Reduced-Leakage Solenoid Injectors

A numerical-experimental analysis of a new generation Common Feeding (CF) fuel injection system, equipped with last generation solenoid injectors that feature pressure-balanced pilot-valves, has been developed. The main feature of the CF system is that it removes the accumulator from the high-pressure layout of the standard Common Rail (CR). In the CF apparatus, the high-pressure pump is connected directly to the injectors, and a small accumulation volume is integrated in the pump high-pressure circuit. The hydraulic performance of the CF system, including the injectors with the pressure-balanced pilot-valve, has been compared with that of the standard CR system in terms of injected masses, fuel leakages, high-pressure and injected flow-rate time histories. A previously developed advanced one-dimensional code for CR type systems has been adapted for the simulation of the CF high-pressure layout.

Customer Oriented Vehicle Dynamics Assessment for Autonomous Driving in Highway

Autonomous Driving is one of the main subjects of academic research and one important trend in the automotive industry. With the advent of self-driving vehicles, the interest around trajectory planning raises, in particular when a customer-oriented analysis is performed, since more and more the carmakers will have to pay attention to the handling comfort. With that in mind, an experimental approach is proposed to assess the main characteristics of human driving and gain knowledge to enhance quality of autonomous vehicles. Focusing on overtaking maneuvers in a highway environment, four comfort indicators are proposed aiming to capture the key aspects of the chosen paths of a heterogeneous cohort. The analysis of the distribution of these indicators (peak to peak lateral acceleration, RMS lateral acceleration, Smoothness and Jerk) allowed the definition of a human drive profile.

Delivery-Valve Effects on the Performance of an Automotive Diesel Fuel-Injection System

An integrated theoretical and experimental investigation was carried out in order to evaluate the effects that the pump delivery-valve assembly can produce on the performance of a pump-line-nozzle fuel-injection system with a distributor-type pump for automotive diesel engines. Four distinct delivery valves, one constant-pressure valve, one reflux-hole and two relief-volume valves, were separately fitted to the pump and for each configuration of the delivery assembly the system behavior was analyzed under full-load steady-state operations in a wide pump angular-speed range. Fuel injection-rate as well as local pressure time-histories were investigated, paying specific attention to the occurrence and temporal evolution of cavitation phenomena in the pressure pipe and injector nozzle, after the valve closure. The flow across the delivery-valve assembly was theoretically examined in order to ascertain any instability sources as possible causes of cyclic fluctuations.

Design the City Vehicle XAM using CFD Analysis

XAM is a two-seat city vehicle prototype developed at the Politecnico di Torino, equipped with a hybrid propulsion system to obtain low consumptions and reduced environmental impact. The design of this vehicle was guided by the requirements of weight reduction and aerodynamic optimization of the body, aimed at obtaining a reduction of resistance while guarantying roominess. The basic shape of the vehicle corresponding to the requirements of style, ergonomics and structure were deeply studied through CFD simulation in order to assess its aerodynamic performance (considering the vehicle as a whole or the influence of the various details and of their changes separately). The most critical areas of the body (underfloor, tail, spoiler, mirrors, A-pillar) were analyzed creating dedicated refinement volumes.

Development and Application of an Advanced Numerical Model for CR Piezo Indirect Acting Injection Systems

A numerical model for simulating a Common Rail Piezo Indirect Acting fuel injection-system under steady state as well as transient operating conditions was developed using a commercial code. A 1D flow model of the main hydraulic system components, including the rail, the rail to injector connecting pipe and the injector, was applied in order to predict the influence of the injector layout and of each part of the hydraulic circuit on the injection system performance. The numerical code was validated through the comparison of the numerical results with experimental data obtained on a high performance test bench of the Moehwald-Bosch MEP2000/ CA4000 type. The developed injection-system mathematical model was applied to the analysis of transient flows in the hydraulic circuit paying specific attention to the fluid dynamics internal to the injector.
