3-D Computations to Improve Combustion in a Stratified-Charge Rotary Engine - Part III: Improved Ignition Strategies

A three-dimensional combustion model for a direct-injection stratified-charge rotary engine is used to identify modifications to the engine that should lead to better indicated efficiency. The engine has a single spark plug positioned alongside a single-hole pilot injector in a cavity located after the minor axis and a five-hole main injector that is located before the minor axis. It is predicted that a second ignition source located upstream of the main injector will lead to an increase in indicated efficiency of 6-8% if it ignites the mixture consistently. The computations were made at high and low engine speeds and loads, covering a significant part of the practical operating range of the engine. It is also predicted that the gain in efficiency of the engine with two ignition sources would be 7-10%, instead of 6-8%, if a two-hole pilot injector is also used instead of the one-hole pilot.

A three-dimensional model for a direct injection stratified-charge rotary engine has been employed to study two modifications to the pocket geometry of the engine. In one modification, a pocket is located towards the leading edge of the rotor and is shown to produce recirculation within the pocket and faster burning. In the second modification, a two pocket rotor with two injectors and two spark plugs is studied. It appears that this should result in better utilization of the chamber air. It also appears that both modifications rhould result in higher efficiency of the direct-injected stratifiedcharge rotary engine. However extensive computations are required before a final conclusion is reached and before specific recommendations can be made.

A First Implementation of an Efficient Combustion Strategy in a Multi Cylinder Two-Stage Turbo CI-Engine Producing Low Emissions While Consuming a Gasoline/EHN Blend

A Gasoline Compression Ignition combustion strategy was developed and showed its capabilities in the heavy duty single cylinder test-cell, resulting in indicated efficiencies up to 50% and low engine out emissions applying to EU VI and US 10 legislations while the soot remained at a controllable 1.5 FSN. For this concept a single-cylinder CI-engine was used running at a lambda of ∼1.6 and EGR levels of ∼50% and a modified injection strategy. Part of this strategy was also the use of a gasoline blended with an ignition improver, giving the blend a cetane number in the range of regular diesel; ∼50. In this paper a step is taken towards implementation of this combustion concept into a multi-cylinder light duty standalone CI-engine. A standard CI-engine was modified so that its gas-exchange system could deliver the requested amounts of EGR and lambda.

A Study of H2, CH4, C2H6 Mixing and Combustion in a Direct-Injection Stratified-Charge Engine

The combustion characteristics of three gaseous fuels (hydrogen, methane and ethane) in a direct-injection stratified-charge single-cylinder engine with a centered square head-cup operated at 800 rpm (compression ratio = 10.8, squish ratio = 75%, nominal swirl ratio = 4) were studied to assess the extent to which the combustion is controlled by turbulent mixing, laminar mixing and chemical kinetics. The injection of gaseous fuels was via a Ford AFI injector, originally designed for the air-forced injection of liquid fuel. Pressure measurements in the engine cylinder and in the injector body, coupled with optical measurements of the injector poppet lift and shadowgraph images of the fuel jets provided both quantitative and qualitative information about the in-cylinder processes. To make the cases comparable, the total momentum of the fuel jets and the total heat released by the three fuels was kept the same (equivalence ratio = 0.316, 0.363, 0.329 for H2, CH4 and C2H6, respectively).

A Study of Velocities and Turbulence Intensities Measured in Firing and Motored Engines

Laser Doppler velocimetry was used to make cycle-resolved velocity and turbulence measurements under motoring and firing conditions in a ported homogeneous charge S.I. engine. The engine had a flat pancake chamber with a compression ratio of 7.5. In one study, the effect of the intake velocity on TDC turbulence intensity was measured at 600, 1200, and 1800 rpm with three different intake flow rates at each speed. The TDC swirl ratio ranged from 2 to 6. The TDC turbulence intensities were found to be relatively insensitive to the intake velocity, and tended to scale more strongly with engine speed. For the combustion measurements, the engine was operated at 600, 1200, and 2400 rpm on stoichiometric and lean propane-air mixtures. Velocity measurements were made in swirling and non-swirling flows at several spatial locations on the midplane of the clearance height. The TDC swirl ratio was about 4. The measurements were made ahead, through, and behind the flame.

Additive Effects on Atomization and Evaporation of Diesel Fuel Under Engine Conditions

The objective of this work was to establish whether two detergent-type additives(A and B) influence the drop size and evaporation of two Diesel fuels (1 and 2) under Diesel engine conditions. Two experiments were performed: visualization of liquid and vapor fuel by the exciplex technique in a motored single-cylinder engine and measurement of the Sauter mean diameter, total drop cross sectional area and total drop volume by laser diffraction in a spray chamber. The same Diesel injector and pump system were used in the two experiments. The engine tests were carried out using a high aromatic content fuel (1) particularly suited for the exciplex studies. These studies showed that additive A yielded a lower vapor signal than additive B, which in turn gave a lower vapor signal than untreated fuel. Spray chamber results were obtained for both fuel 1 and 2. Additive A reduced the evaporation of fuel 1 whereas additive B gave a smaller and less consistent affect.

An Insight on the Spray-A Combustion Characteristics by Means of RANS and LES Simulations Using Flamelet-Based Combustion Models

Advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling of reacting sprays provides access to information not available even applying the most advanced experimental techniques. This is particularly evident if the combustion model handles detailed chemical kinetic models efficiently to describe the fuel auto-ignition and oxidation processes. Complex chemistry also provides the temporal evolution of key species closely related to emissions formation, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that are well-known as soot precursors. In this framework, present investigation focuses on the analysis of the so-called Spray-A combustion characteristics using two different flamelet-based combustion models. Both Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) predictions are combined to study not only the averaged spray characteristics, but also the relevance of different realizations in this particular problem.

Analysis of Transition from HCCI to CI via PPC with Low Octane Gasoline Fuels Using Optical Diagnostics and Soot Particle Analysis

In-cylinder visualization, combustion stratification, and engine-out particulate matter (PM) emissions were investigated in an optical engine fueled with Haltermann straight-run naphtha fuel and corresponding surrogate fuel. The combustion mode was transited from homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) to conventional compression ignition (CI) via partially premixed combustion (PPC). Single injection strategy with the change of start of injection (SOI) from early to late injections was employed. The high-speed color camera was used to capture the in-cylinder combustion images. The combustion stratification was analyzed based on the natural luminosity of the combustion images. The regulated emission of unburned hydrocarbon (UHC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) were measured to evaluate the combustion efficiency together with the in-cylinder rate of heat release.

Auto-Ignition of Iso-Stoichiometric Blends of Gasoline-Ethanol-Methanol (GEM) in SI, HCCI and CI Combustion Modes

Gasoline-ethanol-methanol (GEM) blends, with constant stoichiometric air-to-fuel ratio (iso-stoichiometric blending rule) and equivalent to binary gasoline-ethanol blends (E2, E5, E10 and E15 in % vol.), were defined to investigate the effect of methanol and combined mixtures of ethanol and methanol when blended with three FACE (Fuels for Advanced Combustion Engines) Gasolines, I, J and A corresponding to RON 70.2, 73.8 and 83.9, respectively, and their corresponding Primary Reference Fuels (PRFs). A Cooperative Fuel Research (CFR) engine was used under Spark Ignition and Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignited modes. An ignition quality tester was utilized in the Compression Ignition mode. One of the promising properties of GEM blends, which are derived using the iso-stoichiometric blending rule, is that they maintain a constant octane number, which has led to the introduction of methanol as a drop-in fuel to supplement bio-derived ethanol.

Automated Model Fit Method for Diesel Engine Control Development

This paper presents an automated fit for a control-oriented physics-based diesel engine combustion model. This method is based on the combination of a dedicated measurement procedure and structured approach to fit the required combustion model parameters. Only a data set is required that is considered to be standard for engine testing. The potential of the automated fit tool is demonstrated for two different heavy-duty diesel engines. This demonstrates that the combustion model and model fit methodology is not engine specific. Comparison of model and experimental results shows accurate prediction of in-cylinder peak pressure, IMEP, CA10, and CA50 over a wide operating range. This makes the model suitable for closed-loop combustion control development. However, NO emission prediction has to be improved.

Butanol-Diesel Blends for Partially Premixed Combustion

Partially Premixed Combustion has shown the potential of high efficiency, emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and soot below future emissions regulations, and acceptable acoustic noise. Low-octane-number gasoline fuels were shown to be most suitable for this concept, with the reactivity determining the possible load range. Other researchers have used several refinery streams, which might be produced by a refinery if they were required to do so without additional investment. Some of refinery streams are, however, not expected to be commercially available on the short term. For the present investigation, n-butanol (BuOH) has been selected as a blend component in diesel, and is used from 50 - 100%. The blends then have a reactivity range similar to the refinery streams, so single-cylinder engine tests for their emission and efficiency performance can also be used to determine their applicable load range.

CO2 Neutral Heavy-Duty Engine Concept with RCCI Combustion Using Seaweed-based Fuels

This paper focusses on the application of bioalcohols (ethanol and butanol) derived from seaweed in Heavy-Duty (HD) Compression Ignition (CI) combustion engines. Seaweed-based fuels do not claim land and are not in competition with the food chain. Currently, the application of high octane bioalcohols is limited to Spark Ignition (SI) engines. The Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI) combustion concept allows the use of these low carbon fuels in CI engines which have higher efficiencies associated with them than SI engines. This contributes to the reduction of tailpipe CO2 emissions as required by (future) legislation and reducing fuel consumption, i.e. Total-Cost-of-Ownership (TCO). Furthermore, it opens the HD transport market for these low carbon bioalcohol fuels from a novel sustainable biomass source. In this paper, both the production of seaweed-based fuels and the application of these fuels in CI engines is discussed.

Characterization of Low Load PPC Operation using RON70 Fuels

The concept of Partially Premixed Combustion is known for reduced hazardous emissions and improved efficiency. Since a low-reactive fuel is required to extend the ignition delay at elevated loads, controllability and stability issues occur at the low-load end. In this investigation seven fuel blends are used, all having a Research Octane Number of around 70 and a distinct composition or boiling range. Four of them could be regarded as ‘viable refinery fuels’ since they are based on current refinery feedstocks. The latter three are based on primary reference fuels, being PRF70 and blends with ethanol and toluene respectively. Previous experiments revealed significant ignition differences, which asked for further understanding with an extended set of measurements. Experiments are conducted on a heavy duty diesel engine modified for single cylinder operation. In this investigation, emphasis is put on idling (600 rpm) and low load conditions.

Combustion Optimization Computations-Part I: Swirl and Squish Effects in Air-Assist Injection Engines

Results are presented of two-dimensional computations of air-assist fuel injection into engines with bowl-in-piston and bowl-in-head, with and without swirl and for early and late injection but without combustion. The general finding is that swirl tends to destroy the head vortex of the air/fuel jet and results in a faster collapse of the spray cone toward its axis. Faster collapse is also promoted by high density of the chamber gas (e.g. late injection) and bowl-in-head design (limited availability of chamber gas around the spray, presence of walls and delayed influence of squish by the injector). With enhanced collapse, fuel-rich regions are formed around the axis and away from the injector. With reduced collapse, the radial distribution of the fuel is more uniform. Thus swirl tends to lead to both slower vaporization and richer vapor mixtures. Also, with strong swirl the rich mixtures tend to end up by the injector; without swirl, by the piston.

Combustion Phasing Controllability with Dual Fuel Injection Timings

Reactivity controlled compression ignition through in-cylinder blending gasoline and diesel to a desired reactivity has previously been shown to give low emission levels and a clear simultaneous efficiency advantage. To determine the possible viability of the concept for on-road application, the control space of injection parameters with respect to combustion phasing is presented. Four injection strategies have been investigated, and for each the respective combustion phasing response is presented. Combustion efficiency is shown to be greatly affected by both the injection-timing and injection-strategy. All injection strategies are shown to break with the common soot-NOx trade-off, with both smoke and NOx emissions being near or even below upcoming legislated levels. Lastly, pressure rise rates are comparable with conventional combustion regimes with the same phasing. The pressure rise rates are effectively suppressed by the high dilution rates used.

Combustion and Emission Characteristics of a Heavy Duty Engine Fueled with Two Ternary Blends of N-Heptane/Iso-Octane and Toluene or Benzaldehyde

In this work, the influences of aromatics on combustion and emission characteristics from a heavy-duty diesel engine under various loads and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) conditions are investigated. Tests were performed on a modified single-cylinder, constant-speed and direct-injection diesel engine. An engine exhaust particle sizer (EEPS) was used in the experiments to measure the size distribution of engine-exhaust particle emissions in the range from 5.6 to 560 nm. Two ternary blends of n-heptane, iso-octane with either toluene or benzaldehyde denoted as TRF and CRF, were tested, diesel was also tested as a reference. Test results showed that TRF has the longest ignition delay, thus providing the largest premixed fraction which is beneficial to reduce soot. However, as the load increases, higher incylinder pressure and temperature make all test fuels burn easily, leading to shorter ignition delays and more diffusion combustion.

Commercial Naphtha Blends for Partially Premixed Combustion

Partially Premixed Combustion has shown the potential of low emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and soot with a simultaneous improvement in fuel efficiency. Several research groups have shown that a load range from idle to full load is possible, when using low-octane-number refinery streams, in the gasoline boiling range. As such refinery streams are not expected to be commercially available on the short term, the use of naphtha blends that are commercially available could provide a practical solution. The three blends used in this investigation have been tested in a single-cylinder engine for their emission and efficiency performance. Besides a presentation of the sensitivity to injection strategies, dilution levels and fuel pressure, emission performance is compared to legislated emission levels. Conventional diesel combustion benchmarks are used for reference to show possible improvements in indicated efficiency.

Comparisons of Computed and Measured Hollow-Cone Sprays in an Engine

A second effort is reported to reproduce the distribution of fuel from a pulsating hollow-cone liquid-only poppet injector measured by the planar exciplex technique within the head cup of a motored ported single-cylinder engine operated at 1600 rpm with high swirl and a squish ratio of 75%. The injector, cup and cylinder were coaxial. The engine flowfield without injection had previously been characterized by LDV and PIV and so had been the injector and its spray in constant pressure environments. In a previous effort, the injector was assume to generate drop and the computed collapse of the spray was found to be too slow. In this work, the injector is assumed to generate liquid sheets that change shape and produce drops from their leading edges and surfaces as they propagate through the gas.

Computational Modeling of Diesel Spray Combustion with Multiple Injections

Multiple injection strategies are commonly used in conventional Diesel engines due to the flexibility for optimizing heat-release timing with a consequent improvement in fuel economy and engine-out emissions. This is also desirable in low-temperature combustion (LTC) engines since it offers the potential to reduce unburned hydrocarbon and CO emissions. To better utilize these benefits and find optimal calibrations of split injection strategies, it is imperative that the fundamental processes of multiple injection combustion are understood and computational fluid dynamics models accurately describe the flow dynamics and combustion characteristics between different injection events. To this end, this work is dedicated to the identification of suitable methodologies to predict the multiple injection combustion process.

Control Oriented Engine Model Development for Model-Based PPC Control

A model-based control approach is proposed to give proper reference for the feed-forward combustion control of Partially Pre-mixed Combustion (PPC) engines. The current study presents a simplified first principal model, which has been developed to provide a base estimation of the ignition properties. This model is used to describe the behavior of a single-cylinder heavy-duty diesel engine fueled with a mix of bio-butanol and n-heptane (80vol% bio-butanol and 20 vol% n-heptane). The model has been validated at 8 bar gross Indicated Mean Effective Pressure (gIMEP) in PPC mode. Inlet temperature and pressure have been varied to test the model capabilities. First the experiments were conducted to generate reference points with BH80 under PPC conditions. And then CFD simulations were conducted to give initial parameter set up, e.g. fuel distribution, zone dividing, for the multi-zone model.
