A Multi-Level Automotive Speed Control

In this paper an automotive speed controller is developed for use in a car following scenario on an automated highway system. The throttle actuator used with the manufacturer's standard cruise control unit is used for throttle angle positioning and a multi-level control algorithm is developed for overall speed control. In addition, models of the throttle actuator, vehicle engine, torque converter, transmission, and longitudinal dynamics are presented.

A Realistic Friction Test for Sheet Forming Operations

A new technique for measuring the friction coefficient between the punch and workpiece during sheet forming operations has been developed at the Ohio State University. Various materials, such as interstitial-free (IF) steel, high strength (HS) steel, an aluminum alloy (2008T4) and 70/30 brass, were tested under dry and oil lubrication conditions at different punch rates and process conditions. The results show that punch friction depends on the angle of wrap, which varies with punch stroke, and on the strain rate, which depends on punch velocity. The O.S.U. Friction Test is described and typical results are presented which verify the usefulness of the new procedure.

Accuracy and Timing of 2013 Ford Flex Event Data Recorders

2013 and 2014 Ford Flex vehicles and airbag control modules with event data recorders (EDRs) were tested to determine the accuracy of speed and other data in the steady state condition, to evaluate time reporting delays under dynamic braking conditions, and to evaluate the accuracy of the stability control system data that the module records. This recorder is from the Autoliv RC6 family and this is the first known external research conducted on post 49CFR Part 563 Ford EDRs. The vehicle was instrumented with a VBox and a CAN data logger to compare external GPS based speeds to CAN data using the same synchronized time base. The vehicle was driven in steady state, hard braking, figure 8 and yaw conditions. The Airbag Control Module (ACM) was mounted onto a moving linear sled. The CAN bus data from driving was replayed as the sled created recordable events and the EDR data was compared to the reference instrumentation.

An Overview of the Evolution of Computer Assisted Motor Vehicle Accident Reconstruction

This paper presents an overview of the evolution of computer simulations in vehicle collision and occupant kinematic reconstructions. The basic principles behind these simulations, the origin of these programs and the evolution of these programs from a basic analytical mathematical model to a sophisticated computer program are discussed. In addition, a brief computer development history is discussed to demonstrate how the evolution of computer assisted vehicle accident reconstruction becomes feasible for a reconstructionist. Possible future research in computer reconstruction is also discussed.

Analysis of Tuning Cables for Reduction of Fluidborne Noise in Automotive Power Steering Hydraulic Lines

A distributed parameter mathematical model of a complete power steering hydraulic transmission circuit has been developed and implemented on a personal computer to analyze the effect of tuning cables on the attenuation of pressure waves generated by the pump. Tuning cables, flexible tubes positioned coaxially inside a length of hose placed at a convenient location in the circuit, reduce fluidborne noise primarily by destructive interference and viscous damping. The model uses a transfer matrix approach that includes two-dimensional viscous flow and three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction. It can be used for sizing and positioning tuning cable devices in power steering as well as other hydraulic systems prior to verification testing of the circuit.

Applications of Co-Continuous Ceramic Composite Materials for Automotive Components

A newly developed process allows the near-net shape fabrication of alumina/aluminum composite bodies via the immersion of a sacrificial oxide preform into a molten aluminum alloy bath. The resulting composite possesses an attractive range of properties for application in several automotive components. These properties include: high strength and stiffness, appreciable thermal and electrical conductivity, high strength at elevated temperatures, coefficient of thermal expansion of 10 X 10-6 C-1 and relative ease of machinability. Low cost fabrication renders this material/process ideal for components such as brake rotors and calipers, cylinder bore liners, piston components.

Biodegradable Hydraulic Fluids: A Review

There is an ongoing interest in biodegradable hydraulic fluids. Biodegradable fluids are often considered to include only vegetable oils, polyol esters and diester base stocks. However, other fluid base stocks including highly refined mineral oils, poly(alpha olefins) and fire-resistant fluids such as water-glycol hydraulic fluids are also biodegradable fluid alternatives. This paper will provide an overview of the international literature on biodegradable fluids, various international testing protocol, fluid base stocks, effect of oxidative stability, material compatibility and pump performance.

Brake Dynamometer Test Variability - Analysis of Root Causes

Modern project management including brake testing includes the exchange of reliable results from different sources and different locations. The ISO TC22/SWG2-Brake Lining Committee established a task force led by Ford Motor Co. to determine and analyze root causes for variability during dynamometer brake performance testing. The overall goal was to provide guidelines on how to reduce variability and how to improve correlation between dynamometer and vehicle test results. This collaborative accuracy study used the ISO 26867 Friction behavior assessment for automotive brake systems. Future efforts of the ISO task force will address NVH and vehicle-level tests. This paper corresponds to the first two phases of the project regarding performance brake dynamometer testing and presents results, findings and conclusions regarding repeatability (within-lab) and reproducibility (between-labs) from different laboratories and different brake dynamometers.

The ISO TC22/SWG2 - Brake Lining Committee established a task force to determine and analyze root causes for variability during dynamometer brake performance testing. SAE paper 2010-01-1697 “Brake Dynamometer Test Variability - Analysis of Root Causes” [1] presents the findings from the phases 1 and 2 of the “Test Variability Project.” The task force was created to address the issue of test variability and to establish possible ways to improve test-to-test and lab-to-lab correlation. This paper presents the findings from phase 3 of this effort-description of factors influencing test variability based on DOE study. This phase concentrated on both qualitative and quantitative description of the factors influencing friction coefficient measurements during dynamometer testing.

The process of producing co-continuous ceramic composite material has been investigated in order to provide a greater understanding of the formation mechanism and hence evaluate the viability of commercial applications for these exciting new materials. The ease of manufacture for components combined with the low production cost hold great promise for the production of brake rotors, brake calipers, piston crowns, cylinder liners, gears and turbine compressors. Practical issues such as bonding to this material, together with the machinability have been addressed, our findings are presented in this paper.

Development of a Dynamic Driveline Model for a Parallel-Series PHEV

This paper describes the development and experimental validation of a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) dynamic simulator that enables development, testing, and calibration of a traction control strategy. EcoCAR 2 is a three-year competition between fifteen North American universities, sponsored by the Department of Energy and General Motors that challenges students to redesign a Chevrolet Malibu to have increased fuel economy and decreased emissions while maintaining safety, performance, and consumer acceptability. The dynamic model is developed specifically for the Ohio State University EcoCAR 2 Team vehicle with a series-parallel PHEV architecture. This architecture features, in the front of the vehicle, an ICE separated from an automated manual transmission with a clutch as well as an electric machine coupled via a belt directly to the input of the transmission. The rear powertrain features another electric machine coupled to a fixed ratio gearbox connected to the wheels.

Effect of Ground Proximity on the Aerodynamic Characteristics of the STOL Aircraft

The aerodynamics of the STOL aircraft can experience significant changes in proximity to the ground. A review of the existing data base and methodologies has been made and the results of that review are presented in this paper. The existing data show that in ground proximity the STOL aircraft will generally experience a reduction in the lift component regardless of the lifting configuration. Those configurations with integrated power and lift systems will have an additional effect of ground induced aerodynamic changes. This paper will discuss the existing data base and the deficiencies of that data base.

Reported tensile and fatigue properties of die cast AZ91D and AM60B magnesium alloys indicate that those values depend on the size and shape of the test samples and their global porosities. This paper reviews the mechanical properties reported in the open literature for these die cast alloys and indicates that section thickness and global porosity are inadequate for predicting the tensile and fatigue properties of die cast AZ91D and AM60B magnesium alloys.

Evaluation of Damping Material at Higher Frequencies with Application to Automotive Systems Including Brakes

Many discrete tonal type noise and vibration problems in automotive systems and other physical structures require passive multi-layer visco-elastic damping treatments in mid to high frequency regimes. To address such issues, experimental modal analysis and dynamic finite element methods are suggested as suitable tools. Results are presented in terms of several test structures (four thin elastic beams, a thick elastic plate and an automotive brake pad) with free-free boundary conditions. Composite modal loss factors are measured and predicted for two different damping insulators consisting of adhesive, steel and coating combinations. Special attention is paid to the elastic deformation modes of test structures and spectral scaling of material properties for the finite element models.

Fatigue Properties of Die Cast Magnesium Alloys

This paper provides a review of the fatigue properties reported in the open literature for die cast magnesium-based alloys. Recently developed fatigue data, in the form of stress versus number of cycles to failure for bending fatigue (R=-1), are presented for die cast AM60B and AZ91D alloy specimens with thicknesses between 1 and 10 mm. The effects of specimen thickness and macrostructural features, such as porosity distributions and surface features (parting line and ejection pin marks), on the fatigue data are discussed.

Modern approaches to durability assurance in ground vehicle design are reviewed in the context of recent developments in computer-based analytical and experimental tools for use by designers and development engineers. Examples, using an automotive wheel assembly, are presented to illustrate the application of fatigue analysis in product development. Major challenges associated with the linking of various design tools into integrated networks appropriately configured for industrial problem solving are discussed along with an assessment of the potential benefits to be gained from such integration.

The efforts of the ISO “Test Variability Task Force” have been aimed at improving the understanding and at reducing brake dynamometer test variability during performance testing. In addition, dynamometer test results have been compared and correlated to vehicle testing. Even though there is already a vast amount of anecdotal evidence confirming the fact that different procedures generate different friction coefficients on the same brake corner, the availability of supporting data to the industry has been elusive up to this point. To overcome this issue, this paper focuses on assessing friction levels, friction coefficient sensitivity, and repeatability under ECE, GB, ISO, JASO, and SAE laboratory friction evaluation tests.

Microstructural Characteristics of Die Cast AZ91D and AM60 Magnesium Alloys

Die cast AZ91D and AM60 magnesium alloy components are finding increasing usage in automotive applications. Both hot and cold chamber die cast components of these alloys generally exhibit several common microstructural features, including “skin”, porosity banding, and porosity distributed about the component centerline. Methods for quantitatively characterizing these microstructural features are described and representative values for skin thicknesses, porosity band dimensions and porosity band locations from selected die castings will be presented. The expected influence of these common microstrucutral features on mechanical properties and acceptability of die cast magnesium components for given applications are discussed.
