Energy and Thermal Considerations in Weld System Development

1965-02-01
650850
This paper provides a means of estimating the energy distribution during a resistance weld between a round wire and a ribbon. It also shows that energy considerations are not adequate to predict the success of a weld system and that a consideration of the thermal nature of the materials involved is required to achieve a satisfactory heat balance. A ratio of physical properties is provided that can be used to predict the compatibility of a wire and ribbon before the extensive process of weld schedule development and qualification is begun.

Increased Reliability Through Spare Parts Optimization

1964-01-01
640556
As part of a NASA study of a manned orbital research laboratory (Contract NAS 1-2974), a computer method was developed to select an inventory of spare parts that provide the greatest protection against mission failure for a given weight. Input data are provided by reliability predictions and failure effects analyses. Four different criteria of mission success are defined as bases for ranking value of spare parts; crew safety, laboratory survival, experimental return, and minimum degradation.
